A/N: Geez, this was a hard chapter to write and that surprised me! I was trying to be original in my idea on how to alert Madame Bones to the trouble with Sirius and kept coming up blank! I hope that what I did end up with, everyone will still like. In other words, read and review please!
Needless to say that the goblins were eager to help with freeing Sirius from Azkaban; not only was the Head of House Black one of their richest customers, the creatures absolutely loved having any opportunity to throw the wizarding world and Ministry for a loop. They were still waiting to help with vengeance against Albus for his stealing and an incident of 'wrongful imprisonment' would prove to be a nice interlude for them.
Despite his pledge of help to free a favored client like Sirius, Black Scar still saw two problems: Peter Pettigrew's continued freedom and current placement in Hogwarts. It would be best to locate him before the actual trial, to further prove that Sirius didn't kill him. Not to mention that it would mean another Death Eater getting what he truly deserved, especially when said DE was involved in James and Lily's murder.
At first, the Wildwinds were very reluctant to delay, understandably so. But then Sabrina suddenly froze as something tickled at the back of her mind, a recent memory that was tied to something important. A familiar scent maybe...? Quickly, she asked for silence, closed her eyes and thought back carefully.
Memory
While the Veelas had been eating lunch with the students in the Great Hall, there had come a slight commotion over at the Gryffindor table. Ron was yelling at his twin brothers, "Give Scabbers back, guys!" One of the twins was holding a rat and chuckling while the other said, "No worries, Ronniekins, we just want to retest that color spell on him. I'm sure you just said it wrong on the train! After all, you've never been good with remembering things."
Enraged by the teasing, Ron had jumped to his feet and run after his brothers, causing many students at all tables to laugh and point fingers. To the amusement of the Slytherin table, the twins rushed over and handed the rat to Magnus discreetly before running off again. The chieftain had grimaced in disgust but kept a good grip on the rat, even as it continued to move around in earnest, squeaking constantly in distress. Sabrina had subconsciously noticed the strange fact that the little beast seemed to be missing a whole toe from one of its front feet and thought that it had tangled with a cat at some point.
McGonagall had soon called a halt to the chaos and Magnus had gladly returned the creature to Ron, who had looked very relieved as he returned to his table with his still-shaking pet. The twins had been given detention with their Head of House but weren't repentant in the least, having made the whole Hall laugh with their antics.
End Memory
Now Sabrina went white with shock and practically shook with terror as she remembered the newspaper regarding Sirius' imprisonment and Pettigrew's 'murder'... all that had been found of the true traitor had been a bloody finger! And the traitor was in Hogwarts near children... near her son! "Oh sweet Merlin!"
Her family immediately gathered close in concern and she looked at them with haunted eyes. "The monster's at Hogwarts! The youngest Weasley male's rat! It's missing a toe on a front paw and Peter was a rat animagus!"
Catrina collapsed into her husband's arms with a shriek, nearly having a heart attack at the thought of a murderer moving around so many children freely. Marcus literally froze, eyes bleeding black with horror and rage. William hissed angrily while Jackson growled, "That stinking rodent, I'll-" Magnus, however, immediately yelled, "EVERYONE, CALM DOWN RIGHT NOW!"
Once everyone had settled down, Magnus turned to his old friend and said, "Black Scar, is it possible to see Sirius' will? Or the Potters' will? I will need additional proof of Pettigrew's deceit to convince Madame Bones." Black Scar's eyes hardened and he replied, "The Potters' will was sealed until Harry came of age, probably to keep him under Dumbledore's control with ignoring his parents' wishes. I distinctly remember that the boy was not to go to his maternal aunt. If Remus Lupin and Lord Black were unavailable, he was to be given into your family's care, particularly to Miss Sabrina. As for Sirius' will, I have an unofficial copy that he insisted be kept for 'emergency use involving Harry'. I would say that this instance counts in that category."
Magnus sighed. "Then the will, Sabrina's memories and my word will have to be enough to convince Madam Bones to investigate. I just hope it will be enough to make her think and take action. The sooner Sirius is out of that place, the better we will all feel."
- Ministry of Magic, Auror's Department, two hours later -
Many of the Ministry staff stopped to stare at the unfamiliar tall male figure that was currently walking toward Madame Bones' office. His silver-streaked raven hair was long and tied back loosely with a leather thong, his robes were clearly of high-quality. The Aurors on duty were trying to put a name to his face and failing. All they could guess from his other-worldly aura was that there was creature blood in there somewhere.
The unknown male walked up to the secretary's desk and asked, "Is Madame Bones in at the moment?" The young woman nearly swooned but managed to reply, "She is meeting with Auror Shacklebolt at the moment but I can find out how much longer it will take. What name shall I give her?" The reply was, "Thank you and the name is Lord Magnus Wildwind." The older Aurors looking out of their offices gasped in recognition of the name while the younger staff members started murmuring about an unknown lord wanting to see Madame Bones.
- Madame Bones' office –
When her secretary knocked and entered, Amelia nearly rolled her eyes. "Yes, what is it? Who wants to see me now?" The younger witch blushed and replied, "Pardon, ma'am but his name is Lord Magnus Wildwind. He says that he will wait until you are done with Auror Shacklebolt."
Amelia and Kingsley looked at each other in shock. The former Veela Ambassador to the Fae court had been in seclusion ever since the end of the war and now he was in their department?! Whatever he wanted should be important! "Send him in at once!" Amelia snapped, making the secretary yelp and dart outside. "A-ah, sir, she will see you right away!"
Both Aurors stood up as the Veela Chieftain entered the room. "I thank you for seeing me, Madame Bones. I know that my presence is unexpected." Amelia inclined her head in respect. "Yes but nonetheless an honor. How may my department help you, Lord Wildwind?"
Magnus looked over at Kingsley and then said, "Unless you trust this man utterly, I would speak to you alone and under privacy wards." Kingsley stood up straight and Amelia immediately vouched for him and for the security of her office. Magnus took a seat with them and began to talk.
"I have recently found out some things from my friends in Gringotts that, if known by the public, would paint the Ministry red with scandal. A former member of your force has been wrongfully imprisoned while the person who framed him has roamed free for the past eleven years and as the former Auror is linked to my family through friendship, I wish to see this wrong righted with all haste."
Amelia blinked in shock. "I was not aware of anything regarding such an instance. Who would this man be?" Magnus shot her a glare and replied, "Sirius Black, godfather to my grand-nephew Harry."
Kingsley shot out of his seat at once. "That is impossible! Black betrayed the Potters to their deaths and killed twelve Muggles as well as Peter Pettigrew before we apprehended him! He is where he belongs!"
Magnus raised an eyebrow. "And did he put up a fight at all, if he was indeed a murderer and supposed Death Eater? From what I've heard, the Ministry under Bagnold and Crouch took the boy's grief-stricken wailings as full-out confession and threw him into his cell without going through the proper legal channels, just to see someone blamed. If you have documents saying otherwise, that he had a trial and was given Veritaserum before being sentenced to Azkaban, then I would gladly apologize and leave. May I see the trial transcript, Madame Bones?"
Amelia felt like her head was spinning; this was the last thing she had expected. She caused her patronus, a barn owl, to appear and said, "Auror Archives, Head Archivist. This is Amelia Bones. Bring me all documents relating to the trial of Sirius Black. It is urgent." The patronus flew off and then the older woman turned back to her guest.
"If I may ask, Lord Wildwind, what brought on your interest in Black?" Magnus had been expecting this question and was grateful now that he had proof to back it up. "My family always questioned Black's imprisonment as he was very close to my nephew Marcus and his immediate family after graduating from Hogwarts."
He brought out Sirius' unofficial will and the journal in which Sabrina had written of the Potters' decision to pretend that Sirius was the Secret-Keeper and handed both to Madame Bones. "You will find the first proof written here."
With a deep troubled look, Amelia took the journal while Kingsley began to read the will. There was silence for perhaps ten minutes as both slowly lost color in their faces, though with Kingsley it was harder to tell. As the pieces of evidence were set aside, there came a knock at the door. "Enter!" Amelia snapped and a bespectacled man opened the door, looking extremely shaken and a little sick. "Madame Bones, the information you required... does not exist. Sirius Black never had a trial nor was he questioned with Veritaserum. There's not even a notice that he was placed in the holding cells."
Magnus had to refrain from smirking as Amelia's eyes hardened and Shacklebolt looked well on his way to becoming enraged. Yes, things were moving along very nicely, even better than he had hoped. It was one step closer to freedom for Sirius!
