Chapter 37 – Yes

Matt smiled as he looked down at the ring in his hand. Gabby was in the shower getting ready for their anniversary date, to which he hadn't actually told her where they were going, only to wear jeans and something comfortable. She had agreed me still not liking not knowing where they were going, kissing him passionately before moving towards the bathroom, hoping he would follow but he had promised her that tonight was going to be worth it. She groaned, having worked herself up as she slammed the door to the bathroom.

He had thought about where the three of them could do, somewhere that would be fun and exciting, he didn't want to go to a restaurant, he noted something different and that was when he had come across the flyer at the firehouse. They were turning navy pier into a make shift Disney land, they were celebrating something and had chosen navy pier as the setting. It was perfect, gabby and James would love to be there, the rides would be lit up, there was fire works and performers along the pier itself, Disney characters and stalls.

It was going to be perfect; the night was going to be warm enough that they could enjoy it and he knew that gabby was going to enjoy it either way, he had never met an adult who loved Disney as much as she did but he found it adorable, how she lost herself in a kids movie, the innocence of it all washing over her, the smile that graced her face when she heard a song or saw a picture, it made her more free, like a child, he loved seeing her that happy.

Hearing the shower turn off, Matt quickly pocketed the ring, forgoing the all together because he wasn't bringing a jacket and didn't want to have to worry about her feeling or seeing the box in his pocket. Stepping away from the dresser, Matt quickly sat on the side of the bed, pulling his already shoed foot to his lap, making it look like he was tying his laces when she opened the door, steam billowing from the bathroom, her hair up and a towel wrapped tightly around her body.

Blinking up at her, Matt smiled up at her, "Wow, you know, I could take you out looking like that I would…no need for clothes…" He stood and came to her but she pushed him away, laughing.

"Oh please Matt," she rolled her eyes and leaned over, reaching for the clothes she had already placed on the bed for her. It was almost 4pm, most of the evening activities started at 5 so Matt wanted to head down in time, he also had too meet up with someone while he was there, having realised that he knew the man who had organised the event, he had called in a favour. "Can you go and see if James is ready? I shouldn't be too long…" She glanced over her shoulder at him, shaking her head when she noticed him staring at her, his eyes darkening when she leaned over, the towel riding up.

"Casey!" She called to him, getting his attention enough for him to huff before moving from the room. He was so nervous about tonight, his hands were shaking, his stomach flipping, he had been like that all day, he just hoped that by the time the moment came around he would be able to keep his nerves in check.

"Hey kid, you ready to go?" Matt pushed open James bedroom door, smiling when he found him laying on the bed, his DS in his hands. He watched him for a few moments, taking in how great the kid was. "James, mum will be ready soon, you wanna get your shoes on?" Matt moved back towards his own bedroom, shocked to find Gabby already dressed and pulling on her shoes, how she dressed do quickly it would always amazing him, but he was glad, he loved that she wasn't one of those girls that took forever to get ready.

"Hey, I just need to grab my phone and wallet and we can go." She was pulling her hair up into a messy bun, strands falling around her face. As she moved past him, she leaned up and placed a kiss on his lips, "I love you baby…" he smiled down at her, pulling her back to him, his arms wrapping around her waist, his lips attaching to hers once more, the kiss heating up instantly.

Moments passed, their lips and tongues battling each other, it wasn't until they heard a groan and a 'Oh come on!' from the hallway did they pull away, blushing brightly as they turned towards James, shaking his head at them. "Do you have to do that?" But he was smirked, he actually loved seeing them kiss like that, his mother was happy, that's what he cared about.

Rolling his eyes, Matt made a break for James, reaching him instantly, his arms wrapping around his waist, carrying him from the house, "Get in the car you crazy kid!" They laughed loudly as Matt carried James to the car as Gabby locked the door to the house, smiling as she watched them joking and playing.

The minute they stepped into Navy Pier, Matt watched Gabby change, her eyes lit up like light bulbs, her smile growing wider with each step she took. "Look mama!" James pointed towards the couple dressed as Aladdin and Jasmine, he was old enough to know that it wasn't really them but it still didn't take away from how excited he was.

Watching him run straight over to the group of people who were waiting to take photos, Gabby smiled and turned to Matt. "Thank you for this baby, probably the best idea for an anniversary. I love you so much…" she reached up and placed her hand on the back of his neck, bringing him down for a kiss only pulling away when she heard James call to her, wanting her to take the photo with him.

Hours passed of fun and laughter, rides and activities, James and Matt spending most of their time on the rollercoaster that had been set up, Gabby refusing to go on it as she didn't like heights, something that she was relentlessly teased about by her son and boyfriend. She smiled as she watched them standing in waiting to get on the ride once again, James was talking wildly, hand moving back and forward as he did, Matt's head tipped back in laugher, the brightness in his eyes shining for all to see.

Tonight was one of the best nights she had had in a very long time, she didn't need a fancy restaurant or getting dressed up, seeing Matt with James was enough to make her heart swell. This was all she could ask for when out of her relationship, Matts love for her and her son.

Once 8pm rolled around, the three of them came to sit on the set up chairs, they were waiting for the fireworks, waiting for what was going to cap of their amazing night of games, rides, photos with characters and laughter. As they sat, Matt slipped his arm around Gabby's shoulder bringing her closer to him and placing a kiss on her temple, "I love you baby…" he whispered softly, her face blushing deeply as she smiled up at him. But before she could reply they felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, he slipped it out and smiled down at it, "Hey baby I'll be back. Gotta go and do something." With one more kiss he slipped away.

Smiling down at his phone, Matt found himself standing by the side of the pier waiting for the person who had texted him. "Matt!" He turned around to come face to face with the man he had been waiting for. "How are you!" The man shook his hand, clasping it just as tight as he had the first day they had met.

Matt smiled widely at the man; he hadn't changed at all in the last few years. "Hi Jeremy! Thanks for letting me know you were here tonight." Matt shook his hand tightly.

"No problems Matt, it's so good to see you. I was surprised when I heard form you; it's been too long anyway. How are you? What are you doing here?" He looked around; Matt was on his own so why would he be at this type of event?

"I know, I have always wanted to call you and see how things are but live has gotten in the way the last few years. Is Annabelle here?" Honestly Matt really did hope that she was there, it had been about too long since he had seen her and he wanted to again.

"Yeah she is up on the balcony, come up, you can watch the fireworks with us." Jeremy went to turn away from Matt but Matt stopped him.

"I'm actually here with my girlfriend and our son so-" yes he actually said their son, not hers, that made him smile, it had been the first time he had said it to someone who wasn't part of the firehouse or someone who already knew about their situation.

Jeremy just shook his head, "Go and get them! Bring them up. It's the best way to watch the fireworks." He all but pushed Matt back towards the chairs to where Gabby and James were waiting for him to return.

Jogging over to them, Matt smiled to himself, he had been so unsure about asking her to marry him here, there were too many people and he couldn't thinking of a place or point of time that it would be romantic but on that balcony, with just Jeremy and Annabelle? It would be perfect. "Gabby, James!" He called out to them, getting their attention instantly, "Hey I got a surprise for you both, come with me…" He watched as they made his way back towards him, a confused look coming to Gabby's face.

"What's gong on?" She cocked her head to the side but Matt just smiled, taking her hand in his and moving them back towards the side of the Pier, meeting up with Jeremy. "James don't go to far!" She called when they slowly down, noticing that James had taken off towards the railing, wanting to look down over the water.

"Gabby, I want you to meet Jeremy. I met him a few yeas ago during a call at his house. He organised this event today…" But before Gabby could say anything Jeremy cut in.

"Oh come on Matt…" Jeremy stepped forward, his hand extended to greet Gabby, "…Matt went back into the house when the Chief wouldn't let him, he saved my daughter's life. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have my little girl." Gabby turned and smiled widely at Matt, she was so proud of him, saving the little girls life. "Come on, the fireworks are going to start soon, we should get up to the balcony." He turned from them walking towards the double doors.

"James, come on buddy!" Matt turned around and called out to him, James rushing quickly to their side, excited to be going up to the balcony. "Jeremy this is our son James…" Matt motioned down to James, noting the small shock on Jeremy's face when he realised that James was older than he thought. "He is Gabby's 11 year old son, but he calls me dad and I love him to bits." He whispered as they walked together, a smile coming to Jeremy's face.

"That's great Matt, you always did talk about wanting kids." Jeremy pushed open the set of doors once they made their way up the stairs, coming to stand on the balcony, champagne and balloons set up. "Hey An, guys who is here!"

Gabby watched as the young girl turned from facing the railing, she was no more than 15 years old but what caught her attention was the angry burn scaring down her neck, going under her shirt and then continued down her arm. James seemed to not notice, more interested in the view from the railing. The girl's face lit up when she saw Matt, "Matt!" She ran towards him, her arms wrapping around him, their hug loving and longing. "I can't believe you're here! I've missed you!"

Matt pulled away slowly and smiled down at her, "Wow Belle, I can't believe you have grown up so much!" His eyes searched her face, taking in how much she had grown, "Really can't believe it!" He pulled her closer again, his smile never leaving his face.

Matt and Annabelle pulled apart once again, turning to Gabby who smiled, "Hi I'm Gabby and this is my…our son… James…" Matt smiled widely now, hearing her say it meant so much more to him, putting the exclamation point on his want to marry her, his want to ask her tonight.

Annabelle smiled, "Wow, Matt! She is so beautiful!" Annabelle hugged Gabby, she loved seeing Matt so happy, he had saved her life after all.

Beside them James stood, unsure about what to say or do as he looked at the girl in front of him his eyes focussing on the burn marks. "James…" Gabby hissed at her son, knowing that he was staring, she didn't want to embarrass the girl. James dropped his head instantly, his eyes focussing on the ground.

"No it's alright, I don't mind. I'm happy to have these scares. If I didn't have these scares, I wouldn't be alive today. I still remember being in Matt's arms when he pulled me out of that fire. I don't think I let you go until I was put in that hospital room." She smiled and looked towards Matt who was blushing slightly, hearing her talk about him saving her life always affected her. "You're Chief yelled at you outside my hospital room didn't he?" She turned to him again, watching as he nodded. "It's ok James, you can look at them. They give me strength."

The girl was older than her years, she could put that down to having to deal with the torture of early teenager years with the scaring, a meeting with Matt the year after the accident changing her life once again. He had become her rock; he helped her through so much more than just getting out of that fire.

They continued to talk among themselves for minutes longer before they turned towards the railing, knowing that the show was going to start soon. Matt stood against Gabby's back, one arm across her chest and the other around James, if they'd had a camera, it would have been the perfect family moment. Out of the corner of his eyes, Matt watched as Jeremy moved towards the champagne bottle, pouring glasses for himself, Matt and Gabby.

Taking a step back, Matt came to stand next to Jeremy, smiling as he watched Gabby stand next to James and Annabelle. They were talking and laughing, watching the lights on the Ferris wheel and the pier light up before the fireworks started. His smile grew when his hand touched his pocket, pulling the ring out slowly, playing with it in his hands. "Hey..." He turned to Jeremy, raising his hand with the run in it, "...you min if I make this night even better?" Jeremy laughed, nodding widely; happy knowing that he could help the man who saved his life. That champagne was really going to come in handy very soon.

Slipping the ring back into his pocket, he touched Gabby's shoulders, pulling her back towards him, standing in the middle of the balcony, Annabelle moved closer to James, both of them getting along well enough. Jeremy moved to stand next to his daughter, leaving Matt and Gabby on their own. Matt pulled Gabby to his chest, her back resting gently there, his arms around her waist and hers resting against his.

Slowly Matt put his chin on her shoulder, sighing deeply, "You have no idea how much I love you baby. You are so amazing and I know that there is nowhere I would rather be than with you every day of my life."

Gabby tightened her grip on his arms, dropped her head against his shoulder, "I love you too baby..." Her voice was just over a whisper, happy to be near him. "We are so happy and it's all because of you..." Her raised her left hand over her shoulder, resting it against the back of his head, his lips touching her neck in a gently kiss. She leaned her back further into his chest.

Taking a deep breath, Matt swallowed, stepping away to her right, turning her so she was standing in front of her. In the background he could see the fireworks start but the look in his eyes caught her attention more than the display ever could. Slowly, silently, Matt knelt down in front of her, one knee to the ground, instantly her hands jumped to her mouth, recognition coming to her instantly when she watched him kneel, her breath catching in her throat as she watched him.

"Gabby...you are the strongest, most amazing person I have ever met. I fall even more in love with every time I see you with James and I want you; want you both in my life forever. Gabby will you marry me?" He as holding the ring up for her to see, her eyes watering as he spoke, her hands shaking as they rested over her mouth.

At the sound of his name, James had turned around; gasping when he noticed that Matt was resting in his knee, holding the ring that they had bought a few before hand. His gasp caught the attention of both Jeremy and Annabelle, who both turned around, Annabelle squealing excitedly when she noticed the man who saved her life was proposing, she was 15 after all, marriages excited her.

Matt waited nervously for Gabby to answer, the tears falling from her eyes and the smile on her face telling him that she wanted to say yes but she had yet to say it, her eyes trained intently on the ring. "Gabby? Baby?" Even though he could see her reaction, he was nervous, his stomach dropping further with each second she didn't reply.

He swallowed deeply, his voice snapping her from her blank mind, "Yes god yes!" She cried, sending Matt to his feet suddenly, slipping the ring on her finger before pulling her to him, kissing him heavily, as he lifted her from the ground, their arms wrapped around each other tightly, not wanting to let go.

Cheering and clapping came from the other three on the balcony as matt set gabby on the ground, kissing her over and over again, smiling against her crying face, "God I love you matt..." Was all she was able to choke out before he pulled her back to him for a hug, his hand reaching out for James as well, bringing them both into a tight hug, this was his family.

Pulling up outside Antonio and Laura's home, James jumped out instantly, his bag wrapped over his shoulder, he was too excited to wait for Matt or Gabby, he wanted to tell them that they were getting married. He barely let Laura open the door before he burst through, yelling at the top of his lungs that they were getting married. Gabby blushed as she made her way into the house, smiling widely as she was hugged tightly by Laura and the Antonio, falling into conversation easily, Eva and Laura wanting to know how he did it, Antonio ribbing Matt as to why he didn't ask him first, which caused Gabby to slap him, Laura following instantly.

"Hey kid, be good for Tio and Tia ok?" Gabby bent down and hugs James goodbye, thankful that he was old enough to not know why they wanted him out of the house tonight. Silently they moved from the house, to the car and the short drive to their home. Their hands stayed clasped together tightly, neither of them wanting to speak because they were just enjoying the silence.

Gabby sighed as she made her way into the bedroom; the smile had never left her face as she looked down at her hand, the ring sitting perfectly on her finger. She couldn't have been happier. She had agreed to marry Matt, they were going to be a family and tonight, she was going to show him exactly how much she loved him.

She could vaguely hear Matt moving around the living room of the house, no doubt locking up, flicking off the lights she had turned on when she had entered the house. She smiled when she heard music coming from the living room; he had turned on the stereo, the music filtering through the rooms of the house. Closing her eyes, Gabby let the music move over her, her hips swaying gently.

And that's how Matt found her, standing in front of the dresser, her reflection staring back at him. Her eyes were closed, a soft smile playing against her lips, her hips moving to the music, her hands resting clenched against her chest, her ring sparkling in the light. Moving slowly to her, matt wrapped his arms around her waist, his chin resting against her shoulder, his chest against her back, she leaned back into him. "Mmm, did you know this crazy guy asked me to marry him tonight?"

Her eyes were still closed, a smile tugging at the side of her lips. Matt laughed, moving her hair from her neck; he placed a kiss against her neck, laughing gently. "Really? Well I hope you gave it some thought before answering..." He smirked against her when she shivered, her body's movements affecting him instantly. His lips attacking her again, hot open mouth kisses that caused her to moan, her head tipping back, her arm coming up behind her, tangling in his hair as her body pressed back against him.

After minutes of Matt assaulting her neck, Gabby slowly turned around in his arms, her arms resting around his neck. "You have no idea how much I love you do you?" Her eyes searched his face, her smiled fading when he just stared at her, becoming more and ore self conscious with each second that he was silent. "Matt?" She pushed trying to get something from him.

Instead of speaking, Matt slowly leaned down, his lips brushing against hers gently, his arms pulling her closer to him. "You are incredible, you know that, right?" She just blushed, dropping her head a little so her eyes feel from his. "Gabby..." He whispered, raising her head so he could kiss her again, her back pressing against the dresser. At their tongues met, Matt leaned down and raised her leg, wrapping it around his waist, his hand slipping down to rest against the back of her thigh.

Moaning into his mouth Gabby groped at him, her fingers tugging his short hair, pulling him closer to him, her want for him growing instantly, needing him, yearning for him. Groping for the shirt that was on his back, Gabby tugged it roughly, not stopping until it was being pulled over his head, throwing it aside, not even caring that it crashed against the free standing light in the corner of the room.

His shirt was quickly followed by hers Matt gasping when he looked down at her bra-covered chest, it was new, it was blue and it was hot. It was a simple deep blue with black lining but it set him alight, dropping his head to her chest, Matt placed kisses all over her, savouring each sound that she made, his hips pushing further into hers, causing her to his lustfully at the feeling of his excitement pressing into her.

Dragging his head back up to meet hers, Gabby gripped his bottom lip between her teeth, causing him to grunt into her, pushing her further into the dresser. He lifted her easily, her legs wrapping around his waist, his need for her grinding into her hot core, their want for each other clear as day.

Guiding her down to lay on the bed, Matt dropped them both onto the bed, he pulled away and looked at her face, she had the sweetest smile on her face, the tiny bite of the bottom lip he saw in front of him was enough to undo him. Not being able to hold back from kissing her, matt leaned down crushing his lips to hers in an almost bruising movement. Gabby gasped into his mouth, her breath rushing from her lungs, her stomach fluttering as she wrapped her arms around his neck once more, pulling him closer to her.

Gabby had to pull herself away from him, almost forcing him away so she could look at him, her smile coming back to her face when she saw his confused look, wondering what was going on, why she had pulled him away. Quickly she rolled them both over, wanting to be able to look down at him, her smirk growing wider when he looked up at her shocked. "Have I ever told you how sexy you are on top?"

Without a word, Gabby reached behind her, unhooking her bra easily, she let it fall away, revealing herself to his very dark eyes. "You have said that, does this make it better?" Oh god that raised eyebrow…what was she trying to do to him? Kill him? He sat up instantly, his lips attaching to her chest, her head dropping back, a moan echoing through the room.

The room was filled with gasps and moans; everything Matt was doing was sending her nerves into overdrive, until she trembled over him, her orgasm ripping through her before he had even really touched her. As Matt pulled away from her, he raised his eyebrow at her, smirking, proud of himself that he had made her come with just his lips to her chest. Instantly he had her on her back, his hands roughly, greedily tugging at her jeans, pulling them and her panties down in one hit, dropping them to the ground, his following seconds later.

He had barely come to rest over her when she had her legs wrapped around his waist, pulling him towards her, but he stopped her, smiled when she groaned, "Patients baby…" he slowly leaned down and kissed her, his hands reaching for hers, tightening around her wrists, holding her to the bed, wanting to tease her, but when she bucked her hips forward he couldn't deny her. They knew each other better than anyone, they knew when they needed time and when time wasn't needed and right now, the knowledge that they were engaged and in love, Gabby needed no time, she was ready for him, wanting him, her first orgasm setting her up for the fall once again.

Resting against her entrance, Matt found feel how much she wanted him, he was able to instantly enter her, moaning as he came to the hilt easily, Gabby gasping, pulling him down so his lips touched her, a heated, searing kiss shared between them. Matt began to move, his movements skipped slow and loving going straight to want and desire, this was the pace she had set when she reached for him originally, telling him that she didn't want soft and loving, she wanted heat and passion.

Letting go of one of her hands, Matt held his against the headboard, gripping it tightly as he moved inside of her, hard, deeper, faster. Her pants and moans, gasps and words urging him on, "Please Matt, more…" was all she had to say for him to move how she wanted. It was all about her tonight and he should have known she was going to make it that way.

Gabby dropped one of her legs from around his waist to the bed, using it a leverage to roll them over, straddling him without breaking the contact, her hips moving instantly, not caring to stop, she was going to take him for all he was worth, taking what she wanted from him, what he was clearly willing to give. His hands rested against her hips, his fingers digging in as she moved up and down, her speed quickening as she felt her coil begin to tighten, she was going to come crashing against him very soon and she was going to bring him with her.

He was already feel her tighten around him, sending his heart rate soaring, his body reacting to hers, his own need for release come over him faster as she moved. He watched her move above him, her hands resting against his chest, holding herself up as she slid up and down, grinding herself against him on the way down, a sharp intake of breath coming from him as she did so. With his eyes closed, Matt moved his hips against hers, matching her for speed until she cried out his name, breaking around him as she pulled him with her, the wave hitting them both at the same time, Gabby's name tumbling from his over and over, declarations of pure love filling the room.

Their sex had always been amazing, but tonight, knowing that they were engaged, coming at the same time, was pure bliss. Gabby slackened above Matt, but he continued to move, riding out their orgasms until he slowed, his body not even able to move anymore. Chests heaving, arms shaking, eye lips heavy, their stared at each other, their love for each other filling the room. "That only gets better baby…god I love you…" Gabby whispered as she leaned down, he slipped out of her with a groan but they stayed like that, her on top of him, their sated, sweaty bodies holding each other tightly.

As their breathing slowed, Matt pulled the doona over their bodies, feeling her shiver slightly against him. They lay in silence together until she spoke. "Tell me the story…" It was all she needed to say for him to understand, having said that same line many times in the past 12 months.

Matt smiled lazily, bringing her left hand up to his mouth; he placed a kiss on her fingers and the ring. "Well we looked at a few different ones, some huge and some showy, James pointed out one that would have sent us homeless, but none of them were you. None of them held your beauty or your sparkle, until I saw this one. It wasn't huge, it wasn't showy or crazy expensive but it was you. It sparkled like your eyes do when you are being cheeky or you get a crazy idea that turns you into a kid. It lit up in the light like you do when you smile. It was all you baby."

He then brushed his finger over the diamonds, "You…" he touched the larger middle diamond, "…James…" he touched the smaller one to the side, "…and me…" he touched the other one on the other side of the middle stone. "It's us, together, forever, exactly how I want it to be."

He looked down at her, she had tears in her eyes, she did always love to hear the stories behind the gifts, the reasons why they made him think of her and this one topped them all. "Ask me again…"

His brow furrowed for a moment, trying to work out what she was asking but when her bottom lip was pulled between her teeth he knew. "Gabriella Dawson…could you put up with me for the rest of your life? Will you marry me?" She wanted to hear him ask her to marry him again, she just loved hearing him ask, hearing him say those words set her on fire.

She didn't answer this time, her lips crushing against his was the answer she was going to give, but this time, the spent time together slow and loving, Matt flipping them over, spending what felt like hours calling for each other, hands and legs and moans and gasps and shudders filling the room. They couldn't get enough of each other, and they weren't going to let up now.

They had all night for themselves, Gabby no doubt waking up the neighbours but she didn't care, she had Matt to herself and she was going to scream it to the world. Which she did, Matt chanting her name like a mantra keeping him a live. All night they did this dance…a tale as old as time.

Love? Even a little?
