Chapter Thirty-Seven: Red Oak, Phoenix, and Dragon
"Nice to meet you. You must be Mr. Ollivander?"
The tall man nodded, "That I would be, Miss Potter. Now I'll need to take your measurements. Which arm is your wand arm?"
"My right of course," I held out my right arm so that he could measure it, although I wasn't expecting a magical measuring tape to do so while the wand maker went in the back for a moment. Then again, I have heard that he was insane.
When Mr. Ollivander returned, he called his tape measure and carefully placed the wand into my awaiting hands. "Ten inches, oak, with a unicorn hair core. A bit similar to you mother's wand. Go ahead and give it a wave."
I waved my hand in one swift motion and then the old wand maker's desk caught on fire. My father put it out quickly.
He plucked it right out of my hand and gave me another, "Defiantly not that one. Here is another wand. Thirteen inches, mahogany, with a dragon heart string as the core. A little like your father maybe?"
Once again I waved the wand, but only this time his books flew off of the shelf.
"Hmm, your different than I thought you would be. Nothing like your family, I see. Now, I'll be right back." Ollivander muttered as he took the wand away from me and walked into the back room for a minute. When he returned he had another wand with him. "Try this one. Twelve and three fifths, oak, with a dragon heart string core."
I took the wand with caution. After the other wands I had tryed, I had no idea what else it would do. Although, before I waved it Ollivander took it away from me.
"Nope. Not the one for you. You're rather difficult, Miss Potter. Let me see..." the silver eyed man muttered to himself as he walked away to once again retrieve another wand.
It felt like I was spending hours inside that shop. Wand of all lengths, every core under the sea, and woods of all kind. I never knew it would be this dificult to buy a wand.
Ollivander returned from the shelves full of wands with a small smile on his face. The wand in his hand was one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. The wood was a dark red and the handle was an even darker color. "Eleven and a half inches, red oak, and a duel phoenix feather and dragon heartstring core. Odd wand for me to make. Especially with combined cores."
When I picked up the wand, I felt a warmth go through my hand. I waved the stick and saw silver and gold sparks fall from the tip. This was the wand for me.
"Hmm, interesting..." the wand maker mumbled quietly.
My brow furrowed and I looked at him with confusion. "How is this interesting if you don't mind me asking?"
"You see, Miss Potter, I haven't sold many red oak wands in my career, especially with a phoenix feather and dragon heartstring core. Usually the characteristics for this particular type of oak wand is meant for people that are extremely fantastic duelers with unnaturally quick reflexes and a light touch. This type of wood for a wand, like English oak, is very loyal, but unlike it's cousin the red oak is more acquainted with the darker types of magic and not the more light and nature type spells. The phoenix feather and dragon heartstring core combination cause the wand to be one of the most powerful I have ever seen and have ever made. This wand, Miss Potter, is one of the most lethal that I have ever sold and for some reason it chose you. Use it carefully, for this wand is by far one not to misplace." Ollivander told me in a bit of an eerie voice, although I could here the seriousness in it.
"Are you sure? Why would a wand like that pick me of all people? I'm no one special..." I trailed off slowly.
He looked at me curiously, "There must be something about you that the wand had liked. This wand has rejected a lot of people in the past, but it was you it wanted Miss Potter. The reason why is for you to decide."
I called my father and the rest of my family, who had arrived a while after we'd been here, over to pay for the wand and then to leave. After we apparated home I went straight to my room to dwell over what exactly happened today.
"Sophie, are you okay?" I heard a voice from my left ask with worry. When I turned to see who it belonged to I smiled.
"Hello Narcissa. I'm fine. I had just awoke from a dream and it had left me thinking," It must had been an odd site. Walking in on my staring so intensely at my wand.
She smiled at me, "I had just came to bring you your homework for the week and I also brought you some books to read when you finish all that work. I bet you're glad to have something to do in this boring place."
I laughed as I took the stack of books and papers from her, "Thank you so much Narcissa. I'd rather do my Transfiguration homework that be stuck in this place. I think that I might go blind from all of the white."
"Anything you need, darling, just ask. Regulus said that he will stop in to see you when he gets the chance. Now, I have to get back to class. Get better soon. I can't stand just being in a dorm with all those ninnies," the woman said as she stood to leave.
"I'll be sure to do so," I replied as Narcissa left.
AN- And that is the story of how Sophie got her wand, which will be more important in a few more chapters.
