Hello! I am really pleased with this chapter! I really hope you like it!
37. My Dad
Darren was sat crossed legged on the carpet in his year 1 classroom. He was listening to the teacher as best as he could, but he couldn't help but let his mind wonder to what he was going to do after school; Rose had promised him that they would go to the park.
Darren re-focused his attention on his teacher.
"So, today – we're going to write all about a family member. It can be whoever you like," Mrs Holland, the class teacher informed the children sat before her. "What sort of things do you think I will be looking for in your writing?" She asked the class. A few hands went up into the air. "Sophie."
"Full stops," Sophie suggested.
"That's right, good girl. What else? Steven?"
"Capital letters,"
This went on for a few minutes until Mrs Holland dismissed them to their tables.
Darren sat down at his usual seat and grabbed a pencil from the middle of the table. There was a lot of chatter among the class until Mrs Holland called for silence. Once of the children on Darren's table began handing out their books as Mrs Holland and the teaching assistant stood talking at the front of the class; looking subtly at Darren. Mrs Holland made her way over to the boy. She crouched down to his height.
"Hey Darren," She said sweetly.
"Hello," Darren said polity as he opened his book and began writing the date at the top of his page.
"Do you know who you're going to write about?" Mrs Holland asked cautiously. They all knew at the school that Darren had not been adopted that long ago by the Smith family.
"I don't know," Darren said thoughtfully.
"What about John?" She asked softly.
"Daddy?" Darren asked, turning to look at his teacher.
"Yeah," Mrs Holland smiled, feeling less guilty now she knew that the boy actually called his adopted parents mum and dad.
"Okay," Darren smiled as he turned back to his book. Mrs Holland had been unsure how Darren was going to take to this task, due to the fact that he had been adopted. But she stood up and gently placed her hand on Darren's head before walking around the class, helping those who felt they needed help.
Darren put his pencil to the paper and wrote:
My Daddy loves me very, very much. He is called John. I know this because that's what Mummy and all the other grownups call him. I think John is a funny name.
Daddy has brown sticky up hair and brown eyes. He wears a funny brown suit with white lines all the way down to his feet. Sometimes though he wears a blue suit with no lines at all. He wears a lot of dark blue ties and asks Mummy to help him do them up in the morning for him. Mummy told me once that Daddy doesn't need any help doing this, he just likes Mummy doing them up for him. I like my Daddy's red trainers! I have the same trainers as him but mine are little because Daddy has really big feet.
Daddy is very, very clever and works in a big tower. He works at Torchwood and Daddy once told me he was the boss. Mummy works there too with him. I have only been once and it was very fun. I don't really know what Daddy and Mummy do at the big tower called Torchwood. I want to know but Daddy says he will tell me when I am older like Tony. I asked Tony what Daddy does at Torchwood but Tony doesn't know either.
My Daddy tells me loads of stories. He doesn't read me stories from books; he tells me stories from his mind. Daddy tells me about all of his adventures that he used to have. He tells me about the Doctor and the TARDIS and loads and loads of aliens. I think the Daleks are scary, and Daddy told me that he would protect me from them if they ever tried to exterminate him. Daddy also tells me about going back in time and meeting Shakespeare and kissing Queen Elizabeth the first. Daddy tells the best stories and I make him tell me stories all the time.
Daddy tells me lots of secrets too. He told me that he was the one who ate Mummy's last yoghurt. Daddy told me that we are going to go on Holiday soon, to celebrate his and Mummy's first wedding anniversary. But he told me that I wasn't allowed to tell anyone as it was a really, really big secret. So please don't tell anyone. Not even Mummy – Mummy cannot know! It's a surprise.
Daddy loves Mummy a lot. They are always hugging and kissing. I think it's disgusting. But when I told Daddy this he just laughed and hugged me. Daddy is always buying Mummy red flowers called roses because they are Mummy's favourite flowers because Mummy's name is Rose. Mummy told me she thinks that it's cute.
Daddy doesn't like being woken up, but I always wake him up. I run into Mummy's and Daddy's room in the morning and jump on the bed and they always tell me that I should do that but then they laugh and get up. Daddy also doesn't like when I lie to him, and he makes me sit on the naughty step if he finds out I am lying. But I don't lie on purpose, I promise!
Daddy likes building things and he is building me a tree house with the help of Uncle Jack at the moment. Mummy's going to help him paint it and Daddy said that he's going to put some curtains in the window and put a small table in the middle. I can't wait.
My Daddy is the bestest Daddy in the whole wide world and I love him very, very, very, very, very, very much. My Daddy is my hero!
Later that day, after the children had gone home, Mrs Holland was sat marking the day's work when she happened upon Darren's work. She was most interested in seeing what Darren had written. She turned to the page he had written on and sat back in her seat to read it. There were obvious spelling mistakes and obvious punctuation mishaps, but Mrs Holland could still understand what was written.
When she finished reading it she sat forward, shocked… for a boy who only just recently got a family, he had sure written beyond what she had been expecting – from anyone. She smiled down at the work, certainly pleased with it. She made a note to call home and notify Darren's adopted parents of the great work he had done. She marked a few of the spelling mistakes correct and put a full stop where one was needed here and there before reading the last line of Darren's work again, making her heart warm.
My Daddy is my hero!
So there we have it, not as long as normal, but I am very, very pleased with this! Now I know that, Darren being Year 1, would not be able to write as well as I have portrayed him in this chapter... but what I've done is written it, so we (as readers) can understand it. If it was actually written, it would have a lot of mistakes in it.
But let me know what you think ;)
