Chapter 37
What Went Wrong?
(Sky's POV)
I was still bleeding when we teleported. My legs were numb from being in the river and almost fell over but something had stopped me. Whatever it was, it didn't last. I could hear the dings of the countdown. The suddenness of this so called 'death match' was making my head spin. The blood was gushing out of my body and the invisible force was the only thing keeping me from keeling over. My vision was blurring out and a monotone beep was starting to drone everything out. Then I fell flat on my stomach.
The ground was vibrating. I could feel the tremors, that's it. Was someone jumping? Running? I didn't want to get up and my eyes we're getting tired. I wanted to sleep. Was this dying? No, it can't be. This is just a game.
I heard muffled screaming. Who would scream? It's just a game, right? Games are fun. Why am I not having fun?
The thought distressed me, but I couldn't figure out why? My mind was cloudy and thoughts were jumbled. Another scream made my eyes snap open. I didn't even notice they closed. The scream though, sounded a lot closer. I tried picking up my head, but I just didn't have any strength left. The drone in my ear went quiet and I could start to hear voices. I think there was two voices but I couldn't be sure. One was really loud, but there seemed to be someone muttering.
I breathed a chuckle. Enderlox should really speak up.
"I'll kill him!"
I realized what was going on. The cloud in my mind had left and pain had replaced it. My hair was being pulled back, exposing my neck. A sword was to my neck in a flash. Scratch that, I had no idea what was going on.
My vision began to focus, and I really didn't like what I saw. It was Enderlox. Not whatever alter ego he had. It was the one who cried a lot and loved mushroom stew, whose curiosity never ceased and frightened by new things. The one with a soft voice and didn't want to hurt anybody anymore. So why were a couple of people behind him, one was on their stomach while the other was on their back. Were they dead? I mean the bodies haven't disappeared, right? No, he couldn't have, could he? He did once, but he doesn't even know that guy died, and it was from blood loss. I was too far to tell and I had other things to worry about.
"Stay back! Don't move!"
The person holding my head back pressed the sword harder against my neck. I wanted to understand the situation I was in, but I had feeling that I didn't have a say. Enderlox went to take a step closer but my hair was pulled tighter and the sword made a slight cut on my neck. I hissed at the new sensation of pain.
"I said stay back! I don't know what you want with this guy, but one more step and I'll kill him!"
Enderlox froze. He looked angry. I've never seen him angry, not like this. When he got like this, there wasn't really anything to stop him, except me. Now again, he still couldn't do a thing because of me. He was looking at me; he was furious at me for being the thorn in his plans. No, this wasn't the monster that had made the plans to kill me. This was my friend, so why? Why does it look like that he was going to rip my throat out?
"Put your weapon down! On the ground!"
Enderlox slowly complied. He bent down slowly and placed the sword gently on the ground. He kept eye contact with the guy that had my life in his hands. A cloud was overpassing the sun. It got dark and a harsh breeze passed. The air smelled of metal. Green eyes glowed.
The cloud had passed, the wind died down, and Enderlox was choking the guy. I couldn't fathom how quickly he ran here. His legs were in front of me and his hands around the neck of the man in a blink. His hand let go of my hair and the sword lowered. My head rushed down and I gasped for air, not realizing I had been holding my breath for a while. I would have collapsed back on the ground if blood didn't start pouring on my lap. I looked back up and saw a sword a third of its way inside Enderlox's stomach. He didn't let go of his throat though.
"You're lucky it's a game," Enderlox murmured in the guy's ear with a smirk. His eyes dropped to me for a second but quickly rose up back to the guy.
The guy passed out and dropped against my back. I could feel my eyes wide open.
Enderlox threw the guy back and he fell with a thud behind me. Things were going too fast; I couldn't keep up. Canons started going off. I jumped. Did the guy die? I turned my head around slowly and saw that his chest was still moving? Why did they go off then? I realized then, the other people that were behind Enderlox had bled out. What a slow and painful way to go.
I heard a grunt and flesh ripping away. I snapped back to what was happening. Enderlox had taken a few steps back and pulled the sword out of his abdomen, more blood spilling out of him. It wasn't red, but it wasn't exactly the color of black when we first met. He coughed and winced, a hand pressing on the cut, the other holding onto the sword.
"Injuries that your weapons give me aren't very effective it seems," he whispered with a smile. He looked me in the eye and I had no idea who this was anymore. There was guilt and horror in his eyes. He looked like he was going to throw up. This was what I expected from the Enderlox when we first met. But his stance, the way he held himself up proud and straight, despite the cut that could make him pass out from blood loss, that wasn't him.
He started to walk back towards me. I stiffened. He strolled right past though, right to the guy who thought he could threaten someone like Enderlox. I felt something as he went by, some sort of aura, I guess? It was frightening, something like power radiated off of him. He pushed the man over onto his stomach and pressed the sword against the back of his knees. With two quick swipes, he cut both legs, which started to bleed profusely.
"He'll die in maybe five minutes." He spoke with a quiet voice, another characteristic of what was my once friend. No, he still is, I just have to find him again.
I didn't say anything. What now? This is what he wanted, no? To kill me? I could hear him walking back and I looked to the ground, trying to avoid his glance. His feet were once again right in front of me, but I hadn't expected a hand to be offered as well. It was painted with his blood. I looked up at him, his green eyes were vibrant and sad. I took it and he pulled me up. His eyes began to shine; tears were welling up. He started to shrink down once I was able to stand up properly. He looked down at his feet, seeming ashamed and I knew he was. It was like a child finally realized he had done wrong. He finally seemed to go back to his old self and hadn't changed despite all this. It was whatever that thing is inside him that had pushed him over the edge.
"I'm sorry," he whimpered.
I didn't know what to do. He had done a complete 180 since we last talked and that wasn't really him either.
"What happened?" I finally asked. My voice had cracked and my throat felt sore.
He didn't say anything, his fist just clenched.
"What went wrong?" I pursued, "I thought you said nothing was wrong! You should have said something sooner! Complain some more! You know I'm here for you!" I yelled. I've never done that to him. Nothing like this. I was annoyed and frustrated. He shrunk down more and more as my voice grew louder. He began to tremor ever so slightly.
"I'm sorry," he repeated, this time his voice nothing more than a squeak.
"Stop saying that! If you were sorry, you wouldn't have done all of this! I know it was you you that was fighting everyone here! I know you couldn't stop before, but you could have here! Why didn't yo-"
"Kill me."
I stopped. He looked up at me, tears streaming down his face. He took the sword and shoved the hilt to my chest.
"What?"
A cannon went off.
I was going to put more, but eh, I like cliffhangers if you guys hadn't notice yet. :3
Welp, see you soon (Not too soon)!
