Sabrina's Journal
Chapter 35
Let me draw you a picture
Part 2
"Lock the door," I ordered.
"What?" demanded Yuki.
"Lock the door, because I'm going to do something bad," I replied as I went to the computer. Yuki locked the door and I downloaded all the sketches to my Pokétch.
"What's happening?"
"I...I am Jane Doe."
"There had better be a really good explanation for that," growled Yuki.
"There is only one person that I know of that could have seen me in those positions and sketched them: Chief."
"He returned to his home dimension."
"Yes."
"Now he's come back as a human."
"Or was placed in human form and his mind doesn't work right in that new shape," I added.
I deleted the latest scans of Jane Doe/me.
"Why didn't he recognize you?"
"Because he remembers me as that," I replied as I pointed to the sketch.
"Long hair, big nose, naked and sexually submissive," listed Yuki. "I wouldn't recognize you either."
"This is serious," I countered.
"He was going home to find his mate; he had no reason to return. Besides, why did he become human this time but he was a Pokémon last time?"
"I don't know. Maybe because this time he arrived in Cerulean Cave instead of Sinnoh. Maybe Uncle Bob has answers."
"You're going to the cave now?"
I didn't need my psychic powers to tell me what Yuki was feeling. "You feel betrayed; I'm sorry. Yes, part of my heart belongs to Chief and I know that put a wedge between us. Yes this may be wishful thinking on my part that he's come for me. But if he is Chief and the wrong people find out, then he'll be in danger. If he is not a Mewtwo, but I think that he is, then any therapy I give him will be to reprogram his mind into something that he is not."
"I guess I can't act petty if you already called me emotional mature," replied Yuki. "Do you want me to cover for you while you're gone?"
"Yes please," I answered desperately.
"I'll tell them that you went to Cerulean Cave to find the cause of his memory loss, which at least will be true."
"And until I do, John Doe needs to recover on his own. Don't let them put sketches in his room. The first one really made him distracted and frustrated."
Yuki held up the sketch and said, "Yeah, I'm frustrated too."
"I already explained what happened," I whined.
"If all it took to make you submissive was some drawing skills, I'd have taken classes," mocked Yuki. "You'd better take these with you. I'd have a hard time explaining why I had them and why they made me upset."
I stuffed the sketches deep into my pockets, blew Yuki a kiss and rushed out of the hospital. I was halfway to the cave before the itching in my hand reminded me that I left a bracelet in the hospital. Considering who the bracelet was watching I pushed myself to fly faster to the cave.
Cerulean Cave has three levels of security. The human security is a 'Keep Out' sign and security camera. The second layer is the high level Pokémon inside. The third layer is a trio of Alakazam.
"Uncle Bob?" I projected into the cave. "Kaza? Al?" No response. I released my Alakazam from her Poke ball and mentally relayed the situation to her.
She twitched her whiskers in search for anything. After a cleansing breath, we both entered the cave.
I projected a mental image of an Alakazam to the wild Pokémon that we passed, so we were treated as one of the reluctant neighbors. After we climbed down to the second level, I noted to Alakazam, "Shouldn't it be getting warmer?"
She tossed one spoon up the shaft to the first level and the second spoon into the cavern that opened before us. After a brief meditation, she psychically retrieved the spoons and concluded that it was colder down here. Before I got sarcastic, she offered to lead me to the source of the cold.
I nodded, so she led on.
After we had to turn back the second time, due to another blocked passage, I mentioned, "Cold doesn't have a source."
"Then I'm leading you to the drain," grumped Alakazam.
"Magneton?!" We encounter the Pokémon as we turned a corner. It was very agitated and defensive.
"Tell it we're trying to help," I thought to Alakazam.
My Alakazam relayed the message. Magneton grumped back and flew down the cave.
"We're supposed to follow," explained Alakazam. So we did. With a local guide, and a source of light, we quickly made it to something that I wasn't prepared to see. There guarding a dead-end, were the three Guardian Alakazam, a pair of Magnetons and a small crowd of Pokémon observers.
"What's going on?" I asked.
Kaza gave a sideways glance to a bored Teddiursa that was resting on a pile of toys and bento boxes. I went over to the Teddiursa, who was eyeing me curiously. "'Teddi?"
I tried to look into Teddiursa's mind, but it would have been easier looking through the ocean.
"The three guardians won't defer to my grandmother, but they will to you. I have many questions that need answering," I stated.
Teddiursa yawned.
I projected an image of Teddiursa transforming into Mew.
Teddiursa shrugged, transformed into Mew and blew me a raspberry.
"Is that Mewtwo in the hospital? What happened to him?"
Mew yawned and ignored me.
"Kaza? Al? If that is Chief then all of his memories are shattered. He can't walk and he can't remember who he is. This is important." I projected images of John Doe thrashing in his sleep, the scattered memories and piles of sketches.
An image of Mew flying from the dead end was projected into my mind. There was a hole in space and a figure inside. An Alakazam, probably Uncle Bob, reached into the hole and pulled out John Doe. A wall of ice sealed the hole from the other side.
"Okay so that was the event," I concluded. "I know that dimension hopping can change forms, because I've done it myself. I need to know was that Chief?"
Again the Alakazam silently deferred to Mew. Mew picked his nose.
I grabbed the little Pokémon by the scuff of his neck. "I don't give a damn about your attitude or what every Pokémon in the area thinks of you. I love Chief. If that man is Chief, then I need to know so I can help him recover his mind. I don't care if you just sit here and lick yourself. But you will tell me one thing: is he Chief?" My ghost claws gripped the psychic as I held him up to eye level and glared.
Mew squirmed to get free.
I got very angry.
The guardian Pokémon strained to keep their barrier.
Mew made an image of me knocking down a barrier and letting in the ice.
I made an image of me crushing the ice with one hand and squeezing Mew with the other.
Mew smirked and replied with an image of a Mewtwo pushing Mew through a dimension hole and jumping after. A black wave of energy hit. Mew and Mewtwo's forms became unstable. Mew gained control of his form and exited to this dimension. Mewtwo's form became human when Uncle Bob touched him.
"Thank you," I replied as I let Mew go.
As I let the adrenaline pass, I could sense that every Pokémon in the area feared me as much as the breach. I walked over to Uncle Bob, doubled over and braced my hands on my knees. After some extra blood flowed to my head, I asked, "Why did Chief change to a human when he touched you?"
"Because I was once human," thought the Pokémon.
I was too tired to be surprised.
"Did you come through the hole?" I asked.
"No Princess, I was born on this world."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Now isn't the time."
"I'll keep your secret."
"You've become a fine heir to the throne. You even challenged Mew."
"When I get a chance to realize what I did, I think I'll have a crisis," I sighed.
"If Mew could stabilize his own form, maybe he can help Chief," suggested Bob.
"Do you think he'll help a fellow Pokémon, or do I beat it out of him?"
"Be diplomatic Princess, this is the modern age."
I left Bob's side and asked my Alakazam, "Would you ask Mew to help Mewtwo?"
"I already did," thought my Pokémon. "He agreed, if you carry him."
"Fine," I replied.
Mew transformed into a Teddiursa and went limp in my arms.
"I don't feel comfortable using teleport this close to the barrier," thought my Alakazam.
"Lead the way," I replied as I levitated. Alakazam easily calculated the shortest route out of Cerulean Cave and I dug deep into my reserves to fly us to the Cerulean City Pokémon Center as fast as I could. Once there I linked the Poke Ball transfer machine to the warptile network and let Alakazam teleport us to Saffron City.
Mew shuddered as we entered the hospital.
"Deal with it," I grumbled as I hurried down the corridors to John's room.
"Excuse me?" asked a nurse.
"This may be John Doe's Pokémon," I lied. "Hopefully it will help with his memory."
"But..."
I moved past her and entered the room. As I placed Mew on the table near John, who was in a light sleep, I remembered that I left my camera on.
I disconnected the computer camera and recovered my Pokétch.
Mew transformed into his true self and threw himself of John's stomach.
John lurched up and wheezed. He fell back to the bed and looked at the Pokémon on his stomach. With John awake, Mew levitated to the center of the room, transformed into a copy of John and manipulated John's body with psychic power. The restraints were no match for Mew's power.
"What's going on in here?" demanded Dr. Marcus who burst into the room.
"I brought in a Pokémon that I thought would help John Doe," I replied.
Mew played John like a marionette.
"That's no way to treat this man."
Mew ignored him.
"Miss Sabrina, I insisted that you stop this!"
I entered the doctor's mind, pushed on his exhausted button and gave him an extra dose of boredom as I mentally replayed John moving sketches around. I gave a little bit of attention to Mew and hissed, "Would you be serious?"
Mew and John were dancing a jig. They stopped and both blew me a raspberry.
"How is this supposed to help him regain his mind and body?"
Mew moved on to laughing, belching, nose picking and farting.
I put Dr. Marcus into a trance so I could devote my energy to being mad with Mew.
I tried to get into the Pokémon's mind, but it was a maelstrom. I broke contact and tried to shield my mind. Mew punched me in the stomach. I was about to faint, but I was grabbed by John and a flood of images and emotions raced through my head. I tried to shut them out.
I found myself in a quiet cave. Mew was there. He pointed to an exit with sunlight pouring in. Next he pointed in the other direction to a pool of dark water. In the pool was John and Mewtwo thrashing and screaming in pain. I ran into the pool. Thousands of questions grabbed at me for answers.
"Who am I?"
"You are Chief, a Mewtwo."
"Who am I?"
"You are Chief, a Mewtwo."
"Why am I human?"
"You took human form."
"Why do I have human thoughts?"
"Those are thoughts of another."
"Princess, is that you?"
"You are a thought that belongs to another."
"What are you doing here, human?"
"I am repairing your mind."
"Sabrina, is that you?"
"Yes."
"Where are my servants?"
"You are a thought that belongs to another."
"Kitten is that you?"
"I'm sorry but we couldn't find her in my world."
"Where is my Kitten?"
"We looked together, but she wasn't here."
"She's here! She's here! Kitten, my love, I will find you! Sabrina, have you found my Kitten?"
"No, I didn't."
"Sabrina, you are so like my Kitten. Sabrina, how did we fly so fast and high?"
"That was a jet."
"It's so cold Sabrina. I hope that you have those thick wraps."
"That was a ski suit. We call them clothes."
"Clothes, yes you wore clothes because you don't have fur. You just have very fine hairs. Then you didn't wear clothes. Why do you wear clothes for others, but not for me?"
"I...I take off my clothes for you."
"But you get cold."
"I take off my clothes to be like your Kitten; to be natural. So you could make love to me."
"Love? Yes, I love her. I love the feel of her body. I feel her heat as we hold each other close. My heart races as she takes me inside her."
"She didn't do that. We did."
"We made 'love'?"
"Yes Chief."
"But it was her."
"You never had the chance. She disappeared before you could tell her you loved her."
"I betrayed her?"
"Betrayal is a human condition. You are a Pokémon. You are a Mewtwo."
"Sabrina, where are we?"
"We're in your mind."
"I realize that, but where is my body?"
"Saffron Clinic, it's a place of healing."
"Am I injured?"
"You were found to have no memory; humans treat that as an injury."
"Interesting."
There was a pause.
"Okay... I'm still not in complete control of this body, so would you wake up before I drop you?"
I shook myself awake. John Doe was still holding me, and I to him. I helped him stagger back to the bed.
John sat on the bed, sighed and babbled.
"I guess that I'll have to communicate with my mind, since I haven't learned speech," commented Chief. John wiggled and watched his fingers. "Interesting, I've got five fingers. Oh, I've got five toes too. The toes, ugh, are not as dexterous as the fingers."
Without thinking, John stuck a finger in his nose.
"Great, you made him a delinquent," I grumped to the sleeping Teddiursa.
"Like father, like son," commented Mewtwo. "Who's that?"
"That's Dr. Marcus. He is in charge of your care."
"Why is he drooling?"
"Oops, I better let him out of the trance." So I did. The doctor blinked and saw John Doe sitting on the edge of the bed.
"How are you feeling?" asked the doctor as he approached John.
John smiled, sort of, and looked to me.
"He can't talk doctor," I replied. "We managed to relearn some basic motor skills and reconstruct some of his memory, but his speech ability is at a toddler level," I reported. "Babble for the doctor Chief," I thought.
"Oo goo-bel mu too-wa," replied John.
"You said that 'we relearned'," recalled the doctor. "Miss Sabrina, you're burning up." The doctor helped me to a chair and then grabbed the ice pack from John's bedside.
As I held the icepack, Chief asked, "What's wrong?"
I mentally replied, "I had to run my mind faster to keep up with yours. Since your mind is in a human head, it'll do the same thing."
John looked from the icepack on my head to where it was kept.
"Your warning is noted. Can we leave soon?"
"You're under arrest," I replied.
"Again?" thought Mewtwo. "Is memory loss a crime?"
"No, but being in public without clothes and attacking an officer is."
Chief thought back. "I was wearing my robe. I stumbled my way out of the cave. When I reached the outside, a woman and a Growlithe were shouting at me. I was hit with some electric attack and wound up here. So she was a police officer. She didn't wear more clothes than I had."
I saw the image in Chief's mind of Officer Jenny. "That's called a 'miniskirt' and it does cover the genital area, which your robe didn't."
Teddiursa yawned sarcastically.
"He said that humans making not-acting-human a crime just shows how primitive they are," translated Chief.
"I notice that he doesn't have a high opinion of humans."
"On our world the roles of humans and Pokémon are reversed. We're the dominate species, make communities and have technology. Humans are more like myths," explained Mewtwo.
"Um, is something going on?" asked the doctor as his eyes darted from me to John.
"I was trying to explain to John that he was under arrest. He was telling me that it was just a misunderstanding. Given his lack of motor skills and language skills, plus the disorientation of stumbling in a dark cave, I'd say that Officer Jenny overreacted."
"If he doesn't understand speech, then how do you communicate?"
"He thinks visually," I replied as I waved to the stacks of sketches. "Many Pokémon do as well. I've had to learn to think visually so I can communicate telepathically with those Pokémon."
"Does he have at least a name?" asked Dr. Marcus in a suggestive tone.
I nodded.
"Are you going to tell me?"
"Not at this time. We all have our secrets to keep."
"I understand. What now?"
"He needs a lot more rehabilitation and I think that he'd be better served if I take him home under my care."
"What do I tell Dr. Glass, or your friend Misty, if they demand answers?"
"Just that: John Doe is a psychic and can only communicate with another psychic, and I can't afford to spend all my time in the clinic."
Dr. Marcus shrugged acceptance of my idea and turned to leave. "I'll add 'abducted the patient' if need be," he joked as he left the room.
"So did you come back to escape?" I thought.
"Partly," replied Chief. "My world is under assault by ice. Normally there are regions that are perpetually ice covered. These are the domain of powerful ice Pokémon like Articuno, but the hot domains of Moltres and Groudon act as a counter. During my previous visit here something changed the balance of forces. The ice domains have spread and are locking my world in a cold prison. I came here to get help.
"I discovered that I was indeed sent to the correct world, but I may have been in the wrong time. I figure with your help and the local time traveler I could find my Mewtwo."
"Sabrina?" asked Yuki as she knocked on the door.
"Come in," I replied flatly.
"Yuki!" thought Chief.
"So you're right in the head?" thought Yuki.
"As right as I can be in this head. Apparently humans don't have a cooling system to keep their brains from overheating."
"We don't usually overclock our heads," replied Yuki.
"If these ears were bigger that would help," thought Chief as he imagined his John Doe body with long Donphan ears.
"As if you weren't in enough trouble, now you want to draw attention to yourself?" Yuki reached out to Teddiursa and thought, "Hello."
Teddiursa growled.
Yuki backed away. "So ... what's next?"
"I was informing Sabrina that I have new evidence to track my Kitten and I was hoping that you two could help."
Yuki looked at me and flinched. "Well we're all really good friends, and that's what we do for each other," replied Yuki.
"If we have the time, I hope you two can inform me about your clothing protocols," mentioned Chief. He made a mental image of me lying naked on the bed, a mental image of Officer Jenny in that miniskirt, and his robe.
"Well...it's complicated," thought Yuki, "but basically we keep certain regions covered, except in special situations and with certain people."
"So wearing a robe that was open in the front when greeting a police officer is considered inappropriate," concluded Chief.
"Yes."
John Doe examined his current costume and mentally asked, "Is a light robe that opens in the back appropriate?"
"Usually just in a hospital."
"So if I'm to travel back to your home then I should be...dressed in something more?"
"We'll ask for some clothes," I thought as I sent a message for Ivan to bring the van.
After an awkward pause, Yuki asked, "What is the Teddiursa's story?"
"That's complicated and shouldn't be told here," I thought.
"That, and I'm sorry to say, he has no manners at all," added Chief.
Teddiursa growled back.
"These are my friends and they could be instrumental in freeing our world from the ice."
Teddiursa rolled his eyes.
"Let me put it this way: without them you don't have a world to go back to. Instead you'll be stuck in their world and they make the rules."
Teddiursa curled up in a pout.
My Pokétch rang with an incoming call from my mother, "I heard that you were in a hospital! Are you all right? What happened?"
"I'm fine mother and I haven't even been injured. I've been treating a memory loss victim at the clinic and I just asked Ivan to bring the van to transport us home."
"Oh."
"I take it that the message changed after it was retold by Ivan, Jean, probably Dad and then you."
"Just a bit. Do you think your patient would like something to eat?"
"I think that would be wonderful, thank you."
"See you in a bit."
After we had Chief in a clean set of scrubs and his robe, he asked, "Where's my bag?"
Teddiursa yawned a reply.
"We need to go back to the cave," insisted John.
Ivan was waiting at the clinic's entrance with the van. "Cerulean City."
"Yes Milady."
I was focused on my Pokétch navigation software and called out when we were as close as possible to the cave. "Stop here Ivan. Where am I going to find your bag?"
"Since he had it in his safe keeping, I think that he should go and get it," thought Chief as he looked at Teddiursa.
Teddiursa blinked.
Chief mentally demanded, "Just do it."
Teddiursa looked at the distant city lights and replied.
Chief interpreted, "We need to get closer. There is a secret entrance closer to the city."
We drove through Cerulean City and on to the western suburbs until Teddiursa saw a convenience store that he recognized. Ivan stopped the van. Teddiursa transformed into a Flygon and flew off into the dark.
"Was that a Mew?" thought Yuki.
"Yes," thought Chief.
"He's not what I expected. I thought that he was supposed to be a playful free-spirit."
"Is that the same thing as a lazy, self-indulgent hoarder?" asked Chief.
"Maybe…"
"I sense him coming back," I observed as I opened my door.
Mew flew in, dropped the shoulder bag on my lap, and dropped himself on top of it as a Teddiursa.
"Ivan, take us home."
I hoped that Mew behaved himself on the ride home, because I fell asleep as soon as we pulled away.
"Wake up," ordered Yuki. Ivan was pulling up to the private elevator in Saffron Tower.
"Yes ma'am," I mumbled.
Yuki and I helped John out of van and into the elevator.
Yuki called to 'Teddiursa', but he refused to leave the van.
I psychically yanked him out of the van and into the elevator.
"Sabrina, you've never been so rough with a Pokémon before," scolded Yuki.
"That's because I've never encountered such an obstinate Pokémon before."
Chief sighed, "You have only yourself to blame."
"See, Chief agrees with me."
"Sorry Yuki, but Sabrina is right, Mew is being obstinate."
Teddiursa moaned.
"They are more trustworthy and reliable than you are," argued Chief.
Teddiursa growled back.
"Yes, you helped me escape and reprogrammed my mind for this body. But your bedside manner leaves much to be desired."
"So that's where you got it," I teased.
"I seriously doubt that we are related."
"I still can't believe that is Mew."
"Yes, and I expect you to be on your best behavior in Sabrina and Yuki's home," ordered Chief.
We left the elevator and Mew decided to walk on his own, albeit in his Teddiursa form.
"Welcome home!" greeted my mother as soon as we opened the door. "Sabrina, why did you bring your patient here instead of the hospital?"
"This is Chief stuck in a human body, so I couldn't leave him alone," I explained as we sat John at the dining table.
"Chief, as in the Mewtwo from another dimension?"
"I sure wish I knew what she was saying," thought Chief.
"I'll keep you in loop," offered Yuki.
"Apparently he had to escape his home dimension and during the transit, he was changed into a human. But that has to remain a secret."
Mother gave John a warm pat on the shoulder as she set out dinner. "All of your Pokémon have been fed, so I'll let you get on with your plans to save the world. I'll ask you to be safe and not take any unnecessary risks, but...well you are you. Take care sweetie." Mom kissed my cheek. "Yuki, if she tries to do anything dangerous, smack her. Goodbye Chief."
Mom left via the warp tile.
"Are you sure your mother isn't psychic?" asked Yuki.
"Aren't mothers psychic by the fact that they are mothers?"
"You've got a point. So Chief, do you have a story for us?" thought Yuki.
"Before I start, how do I get the food to my mouth?"
Yuki picked up Chief's chopsticks and fed him.
"Why does it taste better than the last time I was here?"
"Because now you have a human's sense of taste and food designed to stimulate it," I thought.
Mew transformed into a copy of John and motioned for me to feed him too.
I pushed my dinner to Mew and thought, "Help yourself."
"So tell us what happened," thought Yuki.
