A/N: Hello everyone! It has been a long time! I actually started this chapter back in May, meaning to finish this story before I went home for the summer. As luck would have it, I was busy all summer so this story got put on the back burner. I just haven't had the motivation to write, but my creative muse is screaming at me to do something so here I am. This is the second to last chapter of Just a Dream. It will be a short chapter because we are getting to the end. I'm going to let you read this chapter and then there will be another long author's note at the end. Enjoy this chapter! Sorry for taking so long!
Clark brought Kaitlyn into the house with his super speed and gently placed her on the floor. Rosie stood from the couch where she had been sitting with Deb and ran to hug Kaitlyn.
"When Clark came to get me, I couldn't believe my eyes. I know you said people from this town had strange abilities but I never really thought about what you meant. I'm so glad he was able to get you out. I was worried that once Lex discovered me missing, he would take you away forever."
Kaitlyn returned Rosie's embrace and sighed in relief. They were both out of Lex's hands and relatively safe. Kaitlyn turned at the sound of little feet running towards her.
"Mommy! You're back!" Joshua shouted as he leapt into Kaitlyn's waiting arms.
"That's right sweetie, and I'm never going to leave you again," Kaitlyn replied, holding her son close to her.
Clark looked concerned and relieved at the same time. Kaitlyn turned to her friend, smiling gratefully.
"Thank you Clark for reuniting my family."
She placed Joshua on the floor and wrapped her arms around Clark's midsection. He returned the embrace and placed his chin on her head.
"I'm glad to know that you are alive after these past few years. I've missed having you around."
Clark pulled away and looked down into Kaitlyn's face. She smiled sadly up at him. He could see in her eyes that she was grieving, but she was putting on a strong front.
"I don't think you can stay here though. Lex will come find you. If he was willing to go to another country to retrieve you, a trip down the road won't faze him. Do you want me to stay here tonight so he can't try anything?"
Kaitlyn looked at what was left of her family standing around her and felt that she needed to do whatever she needed to protect them. She nodded in response to Clark's question.
"That would be great Clark. Thank you."
Later that night, Kaitlyn lay awake on her bed. Joshua slept soundly next to her, his small form snuggled up to her. She couldn't bring herself to fall asleep. She worried that if she fell asleep, she would be haunted by the sight of Matt laying on the floor dying. Silent tears fell down her face as she thought of the nightmare she had been through the past week.
A knock at her door startled her. Rosie opened the door and slipped into her room. Kaitlyn sat up and slid off the end of her bed, careful not to wake Joshua.
"You can't sleep either?" she asked her sister-in-law.
Rosie shook her head and sat on the desk chair.
"I can't stop thinking about it. One minute he was there and the next he was gone. It's like losing Chloe all over again. When Clark and Chloe showed up saying Lex took you, I was afraid I was going to lose you too."
Kaitlyn reached out and took Rosie's hand, more tears brimming in her eyes.
"I already miss him. I don't know what I'm going to do without him…"
Kaitlyn's train of thought was interrupted by the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. She stood up and looked out her window. She saw Lex's car in the driveway.
"Rosie, stay here with Joshua," she said as she quickly left her bedroom.
She walked over to the cabinet at the top of the stairs and grabbed her father's gun that they kept for protection. She made her way down the stairs as the front door opened. As soon as Lex came into view, she pointed it at him.
"Don't take another step," she said coldly.
Lex looked up at her and shock covered his face.
"Kaitlyn…"
"No! Don't say a word!"
Lex raised his hands in a form of surrender. Kaitlyn heard a door behind her open and Clark was behind her.
"Kaitlyn, put the gun down," Clark said quietly as he approached her.
Kaitlyn kept the gun aimed at Lex's face, her eyes glowing with hate.
"You took him from me! Because of you, my husband is dead!" she shouted at him.
Lex's face expressed no fear, only concern.
"Kaitlyn…" he started again.
"No! You have no right to come and destroy my family!"
"At one time, I was part of your family," he responded.
"Not any longer! Get out of my life Alexander! If I never see you again, that's fine with me!"
Kaitlyn moved closer to Lex and he suddenly realized that she fully intended to kill him if he didn't leave. Lex's face transformed into one of sadness and regret.
"I never wanted this. I only wanted you back. If you want me to leave and never come back, I will do as you wish. I love you…"
"No. You don't. If you really loved me, you wouldn't have done this to me!" Kaitlyn shouted again, her hand starting to shake.
Lex started to back towards the door.
"You're right. I regret what I've done. I'm sorry for the pain I've caused you."
Lex turned around and walked out the door, closing it behind him. Kaitlyn's strength suddenly failed her and she felt her knees weaken. As she fell towards the floor, Clark caught her, taking the gun from her hands. He placed it on the floor behind him and held Kaitlyn is his arms, trying to comfort her.
"Shhh. It's over. He's gone."
Kaitlyn sobbed into Clark's chest and he continued to hold her until she exhausted herself. When she finally lost consciousness, he carried her to the couch and laid her down, covering her with a blanket. He sat on the chair next to the couch, deciding to stay and watch over her until morning.
A/N: All right long author's note incoming. I still plan on writing the two sequels to this story. I have no idea when I will start them. I still have one more chapter of this story to write. That being said, I was thinking of starting a new story section of one-shots based on this story. They will be little chapters of things that were left out of the story. They will be in between moments of the lengthy gaps in the story. If there is anything in particular that you would like me to write, let me know in the review section! If I can think of the right details, I will try to write anything you request! I want to do this to familiarize myself with my story again before I start on the sequels. I want to get my motivation up as well. I am open to writing AU one-shots with the characters from this story. I want to dabble in other things, so let me know what you want to see! When I finally decide to start up again on the main story, I will let you guys know! Please let me know what you think!
