Hey guys!
In this chapter our little kittens finally get middle names, so, Dean can middle-name them when they've been little rascals. Plus, it's not long now till the end of season 1!
Please enjoy :)
Chapter 37.
Episode 20 (Dead Man's Blood).
Alec slurps on his milk as he flicks through one of the newspapers, looking for anything that could be a hunt. Ben bites on his lip and tries to focus out Alec's horrible drinking sounds as he also searches in one of the newspapers for a hunt. They are sat around a table in a café with Sam and Dean, who are also searching for a hunt. Though none of them are having much luck.
Dean sighs and folds up his newspaper, "well dude. Not a decent lead in all of Nebraska. What've you got?"
Sam looks up from his laptop, "well, I've been scanning Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota. Here. A woman in Iowa fell 10,000 feet from an airplane and survived".
"Sounds more like 'That's Incredible' than 'Evil Monster' though" Ben points out.
"Yeah".
Dean smirks, "hey you know we could just keep heading east. New York. Upstate. We could drop by and see Sarah again. Huh? Cool chick man, smoking", he whistles, "you two seemed pretty friendly. What do you say?"
Alec groans and shivers at the memory. A couple of weeks ago they were in New Paltz, New York because a couple had been found dead in their home with all the windows and doors locked. Grandpa had kept some notes in his journal about a few other murders in the same area, years ago, that happened the same way. Turns out there was a crazy murderous little girl in a painting that had killed her family and was now killing anyone who bought said painting.
…Yeah, some of the kids at Manticore could get a little…violent, but not slit a whole bunch of peoples throats violent… Well, unless they were ordered to do it for training or a mission.
Anyway, during the hunt there was a woman, Sarah, whose father owned the auction house that the painting was being sold. She was admittedly kinda cool and badass because she took 'the painting is haunted' talk pretty well and she wanted to help stop the painting.
They kinda of like Sarah a little bit.
The only thing that they didn't like about her was the fact that her and uncle Sam seemed to 'like' each other. Their dad was totally encouraging it the whole time! They even went on a date…sure it was at the start of the hunt to get information, but still!
And they kissed!
On the mouth!
It was horrifying.
Alec swears that he threw up in his mouth.
Their dad was proud of uncle Sam. Proud… For what? Proud for him getting cooties? Nope! They need to find a hunt so they can't visit Sarah and uncle Sam can't get anymore cooties.
"Yeah, I dunno, maybe someday" Sam shrugs, "but in the meantime we got a lot of work to do Dean, and you know that".
Dean rolls his eyes but gives in, "yeah all right. What else you got?"
"Ahh, man in Colorado, local man named Daniel Elkins, was found mauled in his home".
"Elkins? I know that name".
"Doesn't ring a bell".
"No…I remember it from somewhere too" Ben tilts his head trying to remember why it was familiar.
"Elkins...Elkins...Elkins" Dean mutters under his breath.
"Sounds like the police don't know what to think. At first, they said it was some sort of bear attack and now, they've found some signs of robbery" Sam goes on.
"Mm-hmm" Dean hums as he starts flicking through their dad's journal till he stops at a page, "there, check it out".
Dean passes the journal over to Sam and points to the page. The twins lean over, either side of Sam, to look and see Dean pointing to a line that says, 'D Elkins 970-555-0158'.
"You think it's the same Elkins?" Sam asks.
"It's a Colorado area code".
"Plus, it can't be a coincidence because let's face it; when do those ever happen to us" Alec points out.
"Never" Ben shakes his head.
The four Winchesters make their way to Elkins cabin, the twins using their night vision to check the surrounding area to make sure that their alone. As the get to the door, Sam pulls out his lock picking tools, but Alec puts his hand out for them.
"No offence uncle Sam, but you know that I can do it faster" Alec shrugs, "plus I can do it with the need for a flashlight".
Sam sighs and hands Alec the tools. Bending down, Alec swiftly picks the lock in a few seconds and then grins up at Sam and Dean.
"Good job Monkey" Dean ruffles Alec's hair before flicking on his flashlight and pushing open the door. He looks around at the mess, "looks like the maid didn't come today".
"Hey, there's salt over here. Right beside the door" Sam points out.
Dean picks up Elkins journal, "you mean protection against demon salt, or 'oops I spilled the popcorn' salt?"
"It's clearly a ring".
"So, Elkins was a hunter?" Alec asks.
"Definitely" Dean shows Elkins journal.
"That looks like grandpa's journal" Ben tilts his head.
"Yep, except this dates back to the 60's".
"Whoa…how old was this dude" Alec mutters.
The group continues to move around and look at the destruction in the cabin.
"Whatever attacked him, it looks like there was more than one" Sam looks up at the hole in the roof.
"Looks like he put up a hell of a fight too".
"Yeah".
Ben looks around and notices some scratches on the floor, "dad".
"You got something squirt?" Dean looks over at his son.
"There are some scratches on the floor over here" Ben crouches down to get a closer look as Dean comes over to have a look as well.
"Death throes maybe?" Sam wonders.
"Yeah, maybe" Dean mutters, squinting at the marks, "Al, can you grab me some paper and a pencil".
Alec quickly looks around the mess of a room and finds what Dean needs. He tears out a page from a notebook and grabs one of the pencils that are scattered across the desk. Dean places the paper over the marks on the floor and rubs the pencil over it to get the outline.
"Or maybe a message" Dean peels the paper away from the scratches, which now has a lot of blood on the back of it, and hands it over to Sam, "look familiar?"
"Three letters, six digits. The location and combination of a post office box" Sam nods.
"It's a mail drop" Ben realises.
"Just the way Dad does it" Dean stands up and looks at Sam, "Now we know where we need to go next".
Alec twists his mouth into a frown as Sam and Dean walk across the road towards the post office, because he and Ben have been left in the Impala…again. Their dad had said that there was no point in them coming in as they'd only be a few minutes as they grab whatever Elkins has left.
Ben twitches in his seat, tilts his head to the side and looks out the window as he feels the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
"You feel it too, right?" Alec asks as he narrows his eyes as he looks at the window into the trees.
"The feeling of being watched? Yeah" Ben nods.
The twins look at each for a moment before turning and pushing open their doors and jumping out of the Impala.
"Dad is going to be pissed that we did this" Ben sighs as he closes his door.
"Boo hoo" Alec rolls his eyes as his door slams shut, "something is out here".
The twins carefully look to the trees, their enhanced hearing picking up shuffling and then the crackles of small twigs being stepped on. Ben and Alec quickly blur off in that direction and within seconds they crash into what was watching them.
…Well…more like, who was watching them.
"Bloody hell, you two are heavy" John groans from the bottom of the pile.
"Grandpa?" Ben pushes himself off John and on to his knees next to him.
"Paternal forebear!" Alec grins, though doesn't make to move off John.
John rolls his eyes, "Alec".
"Yes?"
"Get off".
Alec pouts but complies. He stands up and helps John to his feet.
"What are you doing here?" Ben asks, standing up and brushing the dirt off his jeans.
"I heard about Daniel. Him and I used to know each other quite well" John frowns, "He taught me a lot".
"Oh…sorry for your loss".
"Unfortunately, that's not uncommon for this business" John sighs.
"Alec! Ben!" they hear Sam and Dean yell.
"Come on you two" John says, "we'd better get to them before your dad freaks out more then he already is, since I'm guessing you were supposed to say in the car".
"…maybe" Alec shrugs and hides his cheeky grin.
John gives Alec a pointed look, causing the boy to sigh and take the hand that John is holding out. Ben grabs Johns other hand and the three of them head back to the Impala.
Sam and Dean exit the post office with matching confused frowns on their faces, carrying the letter that Elkins left, as they walk back towards the Impala.
"So, 'J.W.' You think? John Winchester?" Sam wonders.
"I don't know. Should we open it?" Dean asks before looking at the Impala as they reach it.
Dean pauses in his step as he notices that the back seats look empty. He rushes forward and opens the back door to check that the boys weren't just laying down. A cold wash of dread freezes Dean's blood.
"They're gone" Dean gasps, "Sam! The boys are gone!"
"What!" Sam's eyes widen in shock as he looks into the back of the Impala and sees for himself that the twins aren't there.
"They're gone. Somethings happened to them. A demons taken them…or Manticore…or-".
"Dean take a breath for a second, okay".
"Okay? It's not okay!"
"I'm not saying it's okay Dean!" Sam huffs. He knows that his brother isn't thinking clearly and is panicking, so as much as he wants to panic, he has to stay calm, "we've only been gone five minutes, so they can't be far. There isn't a sulfur smell so demons haven't taken them-".
"Manticore-"
"If Manticore was here then I'm sure the boys would have ran into the post office to us" Sam watches Dean take in a deep breath before he continues, "Alec probably saw something and ran off, you know what Alec's like, and Ben most likely ran after him to try and get him back".
Dean lets out a long breath while nodding. He still feels sick to his stomach and the feel of dread was still firmly running throughout his body, but what Sam is saying makes sense…but, Christ! Having kids was terrifying. The things they make you feel…the overwhelming panic and horror. If hunting doesn't kill him, a heart attack caused by the twins will.
"Alec! Ben!" Dean yells and Sam quickly joins in, "Alec! Ben!"
When he gets his hands on the pair of them, he's going to kill them… Okay no, he's going to hug them and thank God, if he believed in him, that they are alright. Then he's going to kill them and find a way to bright them back to life so that he can ground their sorry little as-butts!
"Alec! Be-"
"Hey dad" Alec's voice calls and Sam and Dean heads snap up to see Alec and Ben walking out from the trees…with John.
"Dad?" Dean blinks.
"Wh…" Sam stands shocked staring at his dad.
"I'm sorry we left the car dad" Ben begins, "it's just we felt someone watching us after you and uncle Sam went inside, so we went to investigate, and it turns out it was just grandpa".
"Who's here because of Elkins" Alec adds.
"Why don't we take this conversation to the car. It'll be a little more private" John suggests.
"Okay, but don't think that I'm going to forgot about the two of you leaving the Impala without my permission, Benjamin Robert and Alec Jonathon Winchester" Dean wags his finger between the twins.
Sam, John, Ben and Alec all look at Dean with varying degrees of 'what-the-fuck' faces.
"What? I have been saying that they needed middle names so that I can middle name them when they don't listen" Dean defends himself.
"So…Robert and Jonathon" Sam tries to hide his amused grin.
"Shut up".
"After grandpa and Bobby, right?" Ben's smile is huge, and his delight is shining in his eyes.
"…maybe".
"I'm honoured and I'm sure Bobby will be as well" John twitches a smile, "but we should still take this to the car".
The five Winchester quickly climb into the Impala, with John sat in between Ben and Alec in the back, and Sam and Dean turned around in there's so that they can see John.
"Dad, what are you doing here? Are you all right?" Sam asks.
"Yeah, I'm ok. I read the news about Daniel, I got here as fast as I could. I saw you four at his place".
"Why didn't you come in Dad?"
"You know why. Because I had to make sure you weren't followed…by anyone or anything. Nice job of covering your tracks by the way.
Dean tries to hide how proud that makes him feel, "yeah, well, we learned from the best".
"Wait, you came all the way out here for this Elkins guy?" Sam questions.
"Yeah. He was…he was a good man. He taught me a hell of a lot about hunting" John says.
"Well you never mentioned him to us".
"We had a…we had kind of a falling out. I hadn't seen him in years".
"Kinda like with Bobby?" Ben tilts his head.
"Yeah…only he never pulled a shotgun on me" John looks at the letter in Dean's hand, "I should look at that", Dean passes the letter over and John opens it and starts to read it out loud, "'If you're reading this, I'm already dead'…" John continues reading but not out loud until he gets to the end, "that son of a bitch".
"Language…and what is it?" Dean asks and Sam whips his head to look at him. He can't believe he just said language to his dad.
John shakes his head, "he had it the whole time".
"Dad, what?" Sam turns back to John.
"When you searched the place, did you, did you see a gun? An antique, a Clot revolver, did you see it?"
"Ah, there was…there was an old case, but it was empty" Dean shakes his head.
"They have it".
"You mean whatever killed Elkins?" Alec asks.
"We gotta pick up the trail".
"We?" both Ben and Alec grin. There was no way in hell that they were going to miss out on this hunt. Not on a hunt with John. Dean can try and stop them, but they are going to help. It'll be like a family outing or something. All of them together, working a case.
"Wait. You want us to come with you?" Sam clarifies.
"If Elkins was telling the truth, we gotta find this gun".
"The gun…why?"
"Because it's important, that's why".
"That doesn't really explain much" Alec rolls his eyes and ignores John's glare.
"Dad, we don't even know what these things are yet" Sam shakes his head.
"They were what Daniel Elkins killed best: Vampires" John reveals.
"Vampires? Like with the fangs", Alec raises his hands to his face and uses his fingers to mimic vampire fangs, "and the blood sucking?"
"Yes, with the fangs and the blood sucking".
"Vampires? I thought there was no such thing" Dean interrupts.
"You never even mentioned them, Dad" Sam frowns.
"I thought they were extinct. I thought Elkins and other hunters had wiped them out. I was wrong".
"So, if you thought that they were extinct, do you know anything about them?" Ben asks.
"Yeah, most vampire lore that you'll find is crap. A cross won't repel them, sunlight won't kill them, and neither will a stake to the heart. But the bloodlust, that part's true. They need fresh human blood to survive" John explains, "they were once people, so you won't know it's a vampire until it's too late".
"Well, that's just swell" Alec sighs and slumps in his seat.
John leans back in the chair as he listens to the radio, waiting for any kind of news that could be a sign of vampires. He looks over at the beds, and a small, relax smile finds its way on to his lips at the sight of the boys all fast asleep. Especially at the sight of Dean being buried by the twins in the bed.
Ben is curled up on Dean's right, his head snuggled into Dean's neck and his arm draped over his upper chest. Alec on the other hand is practically lay on top of Dean, with one of his legs sticking out of the bed. John shakes his head in amusement, he has no idea how that boy is comfortable...or how Dean is comfortable under the boys.
"Unit 22 let me confirm. Mile marker 41, abandoned car. You need a workup?" A dispatcher's voice crackles from the radio.
"Copy that. Possible 207. Better get forensics out here" another voice answers.
And the nice, peaceful family moment is over. John jumps to his feet and grabs his jacket, the sudden rush off movement and sound disrupt Ben and Alec from their sleep.
"Grandpa?" Ben pushes himself up in the bed and Alec rolls off Dean.
"The vampires have attack, we gotta go check it out" John slaps Sam and Dean's feet as he call's their names, "Sam, Dean. Let's go".
Dean immediately responds, though he's still half asleep as he rubs his eyes, "Mm-hmm".
Sam half sits up, "dad?"
"I picked up a police call" John throws on his jacket on.
"What happened?" Sam asks.
"A couple called 911, found a body in the street. Cops got there everyone was missing. It's the vampires".
Sam stands up from the bed, "how do you know?"
"Just follow me, ok?" John says as he leaves the room.
Ben and Alec frown as the shove their boots on. It would have been nice for John to explain a little more before swanning off out the door. They like to be a bit more briefed on what's going on. It helps to stop things going wrong on a hunt...or more wrong anyway, and with the luck this family has, they need all the help they can get.
Sam shrugs his jacket on and holds out the twin's coats for them.
"Huh, vampires. Gets funnier every time I hear it" Dean mutters.
Ben and Alec, for once, aren't as mad that they are sat in the Impala. Mostly because Sam and Dean as also sat in the Impala waiting for John to finish talking to the cop. So…Alec may, or may not, be sat with a satisfied smirk on his face. The leavers have become the lefties. Or something like that. It was a taste of their own medicine.
"I don't see why we couldn't have gone over with him" Sam tries to hide the fact that he's sulking, but the tone of his voice gives him away.
"Oh, don't tell me it's already starting" Dean groans as he opens his door and gets out to meet John as he makes his way over.
"What's starting?" Sam huffs as he climbs out too.
While they've never been directly told about the whole 'Sam and John' thing, the twins know quite a bit about it from all the little bits of information they've gathered over the year. The main bit of information being that Sam and John butt heads…a lot, like more then they do with each other.
And if the head butting is starting already, in less than 24 hours, then this could be a long and difficult hunt. Ben was sending a small prayer to the Blue Lady that they can hopefully get along and solve this hunt, with minimal fights.
"What have you got?" Dean asks John.
Ben and Alec quickly lean out of the window so that they can be a part of the conversation.
"It was them all right. Looks like they're heading west. We'll have to double back to get around that detour".
"How can you be so sure?" Sam questions.
"Sam…" Dean warns.
"I just wanna know we're going in the right direction" Sam says sharply to Dean.
"We are".
Yes please…don't give any more information. Alec huffs, okay…yeah, he can see how Sam finds this annoying. Not being told everything.
"How do you know?" Sam continues.
John hands something over to Dean, "I found this".
"It's a…a vampire fang" Dean holds up the fang to look at it clearly.
"Not fangs, teeth. The second set descends when they attack" John informs them, then turns to look at Sam, "any more questions?"
Sam looks away and doesn't answer, but the twins can clearly see his pissed off bitch face.
"All right, let's get out of here, we're losing daylight", John heads back over to his truck, "hey Dean, why don't you touch up your car before you get rust? I wouldn't have given you the damn thing if I thought you were going to ruin it".
Dean looks down at Baby and Sam gives Dean his 'told-you-so' face.
Sam, for a change, is driving the Impala as they follow behind John. Dean hopes that if Sam is focusing on driving, he won't have time to bitch about dad.
"Vampires nest in groups of eight to ten" Ben reads out loud,"Smaller packs are sent to hunt for food. Victims are taken to the nest where the pack keeps them alive, bleeding them for days or weeks".
"I wonder if that's what happened to that 911 couple" Alec says.
"That's probably what Dad's thinking. Course it would be nice if he just told us what he thinks" Sam huffs.
"So, it is starting" Dean rolls his eyes in annoyance.
"What?"
"Sam, we've been looking for Dad all year. Now, we're with him for more than a couple of hours and there's static already?"
"No. Look, I'm happy he's ok, all right? And I'm happy that we're all working together again".
"Well good" Dean hopes that's going to be that. He knows it's not, because he knows his brother, but he can hope.
Both Ben and Alec can tell that Sam isn't going to be able to keep his mouth shut, because he's Sam.
"It's just the way he treats us, like we're children" Sam's hands tighten on the steering wheel.
"Oh God" Dean groans.
Ben and Alec share a look. As much as they want to point out the they both treat them like children…it probably wouldn't help them…since they are technically children.
"He barks orders at us Dean, he expects us to follow them without question. He keeps us on some crap need-to-know deal" Sam snaps.
"To be fair" Alec knows he should keep his mouth shut…but he's Alec. When does he ever keep his mouth shut, "it's annoying that he doesn't explain everything. I mean, for hunters, isn't everything technically need to know?"
Dean turns in his seat, "you, do not get involved in this", he turns back to Sam, "he does what he does for a reason".
"What reason?"
"Our job! There's no time to argue, there's no margin for error, all right? That's just the way the old man runs things" Dean glares at Sam.
"Plus, he does what he does to protect us" Ben points out.
"We aren't kids anymore, we don't need protecting and yeah, maybe that worked when we were kids but not anymore, all right. Not after everything you and I have been through, Dean. I mean, are you telling me you're cool with just falling into line, and letting him run the whole show?" Sam challenges Dean.
"…if that's what it takes" Dean says weakly.
"I know you can lie better than that dad" Alec give him a pointed look.
Here is the first chapter. I'm thinking that this'll probably be a 3 chapter episode. As you may have been able to see in this chapter, Alec is siding a little more with Sam, while Ben is hoping for peace but is kinda understanding why John does what he does. Though, he doesn't enjoy being left in the dark and only told bits of information. Poor Benny just wants everyone to get along.
I hope you guys like this chapter and John's return. I like having grandpa John around and I feel sad that I'm going to have to kill him soon.
Anyway, please favourite, follow and review. You guys know how much I love your comments!
Thanks for reading :)
