The Rose and the Cat

Dawn groaned as the annoying sound of alarm rung close to her. She tried her best not to shriek but it just didn't stop ringing.

"Ugh! Whose alarm is that?" she finally sat up on her bed and the alarm was off. She groaned in more frustration.

"Sorry, my call. Hello?" Zoey said in apologizing voice and started to talk to the one over the phone line.

"Who is it?" Dawn asked. May soon woke up cursing about alarm clock not going off.

"Yeah, okay. I got it, don't worry ma'am, you know that I got the hang of it. Yeah yeah, did I ever disappointed you before? Okay, sorry about that. Yeah, I got it! Bye." She hung up grumbling.

"Who is it?" This time May asked.

"Adelheit. It has been long time since she called me. Well I need to write another duet." Zoey said slightly annoyed.

"Duet? Let's see, Marina and Jimmy did theirs, Leaf and Gary did theirs and Misty and Ash, then who?" Dawn said, counting with her fingers.

"May and Drew." That made the rest of the girls sit straight up.

"They are what?" Misty shrieked.

"I thought they were asleep." May said but got ignored.

"Finally they are getting their song! I just wish that you are going to enjoy. Oh I really wish you two can get along fine now." Marina said dreamly.

"You know that I just don't want to be awkward between him and I. I mean seriously, he rejected me back then, remember? I don't want that to happen again this time. I can make mistakes and I am so good at that."

"This is similar to back when Gary and I sung Magnet." Leaf said with a smile.

"What do you mean?" Misty asked.

"Well one-sided plus rejected love. I rejected Gary but he kept on loving me, didn't gave up at all and now look what he has. You got rejected once but if you keep loving him I'm sure you will get what you want." Leaf explained while looking at Leaf with 'big-sister' smile on her face.

"Well that's because Gary's good at attracting girls. I'm not that good."

"Um, have you noticed? You are like loved by everyone when you are on stage. Dawn, yeah she's the leader but May you are loved the most. Well I guess you and Dawn are similar though." Marina said scratching the back of her neck.

"Oh yeah, I forgot to ask. How did you celebrate the one-year anniversary?" Dawn asked Marina.

The other girls squealed and sparkled their eyes toward Marina, demanding an explanation.

"Is that necessary here?" The girls nodded at the question.

"Well he called me and told me to come to the dorm roof after school so I did and he had a small party just for him and I planned. That's pretty much all I did." Marina said doing a sleepy yawning after the sentence.

"That's so romantic! You are so lucky Marina." Misty cooed, thinking of her own boyfriend who was too oblivious to do anything for her.

"I'm sure Ash will do it when Gary thinks Ash is too oblivious." Leaf said standing up and heading to the bathroom then closing the door.

"Oh I heard that Gary gave Paul some love advice for confessing to you, Dawn." Zoey said as she climbed down from the bunk.

"I don't even want to think about it." Dawn said, waving her legs that didn't touch the floor.

"Why not? Hearing Gary's description it wasn't that bad at all." Misty said.

"Do you still have feelings against him?" Marina asked.

"No I don't. Not 'I freakin' hate you' way. I just don't like him as, like a boyfriend and girlfriend way. You know what I mean?" her friends nodded their head slightly and some shrugged.

"I don't want any romantic relationship anyway. Let's move on to someone else, such as…." Dawn turned her gaze toward May and everyone except for the brunette followed the gaze as well. Leaf came out from the bathroom wiping her face with lime green towel, saw that everyone was looking at May and grinned.

"Well then, let's hear Ms. Maple's love story, now shall we?" Leaf said as she sat down on the sofa.

"I don't have anything to talk about." May said looking confused.

"Just tell us anything that happened between you and Drew." Dawn said. May looked at the blunette who didn't seem to mind about hearing about her ex-boyfriend.

"Just you know talking before and after classes and joking around. Oh, he did gave me some chocolate." She said licking her lips.

"Chocolate? Isn't that like a food of love?" Marina shrieked.

"Marina, you are overreacting." Misty said to her cousin.

"Oops, sorry." Marina said while scratching the back of her head.

"Well May, keep going and he will eventually fall for you." Leaf said.

"I hope he will." May said, putting her elbow on her knee, and putting her head on the palm, looking up.

"Well," Zoey said giving a stretch while standing up.

"I need to go thinking about the duet. May which is your favorite animal?" May blinked.

"Cat or Chick. They are so adorable!" May said with a small squeal.

"Alright, I got it." Zoey said with a smile and muttered, 'this is gonna be hard.'

Dawn heard this and giggled. She was already wondering what kind of song Zoey was planning for May and Drew.

So for pretty much the whole week Zoey didn't pay attention to any of the class and kept on writing the song. Sometimes the teachers told her to pay attention to the class but was ignored by the producer. Zoey was able to finish the song at the end of the week and Adelheit was already ready to make the music video.

"So, you asked me which animal I like because this song is with animals." May said and Zoey nodded proudly.

"I'm a cat?" Drew asked.

"A stray cat to be exact." Zoey pointed out.

"Hey! I'm Drew Hayden, I can't be a stray cat!" He said.

"Well this or no song for you. I spent the whole week getting scolded by teachers to write this song. If you don't approve it then I can just give it to Paul and Dawn." Dawn and Paul flinched together.

"Zoey, thanks but no thanks. That's not my type of the song." Dawn said.

"Me neither. Just sing, seriously." Paul grumbled.

"I can't be a stray!" Drew said, acting like a total drama queen I mean king.

"Does that matter that much?" May and Zoey asked. Drew looked at them, stared to be correct, for a fairly long amount of time and sat down.

"Fine!"

The others cheered, except for Paul of course.

"You know your fan girls will like your new image. A royal Hayden from a stray-bad boy Hayden." Leaf said.

"Whatever." Drew said, constantly grumbling.

"When do we sing?" May asked.

"Here's the song, and we are recording it next week. You two better practice together, although there's no singing-together part."

May and Drew tilted their head.

"Are you sure it's a duet?" May asked.

"Yes, this song is pretty much talking to each other, that's why." Zoey said while having them sit beside her. Zoey started to explain the song to them while the rest exited the door, leaving them all alone.

They closed the door behind them and they soon separated away. Marina grabbed Jimmy's hand and they together went somewhere. Gary pulled Leaf out of the crowd. Ash and Misty waved and they left the dorm. Dawn realized that she was only left with Paul. She wondered why Kenny wasn't here but she already knew the answer; he was in the room studying his ass off.

"Zoey has some imagination." Dawn's head perked up at Paul's voice.

"Huh?"

"She writes songs that weren't written by most of the producers. She has a unique story line in her songs." Paul said.

Dawn blinked and stared at the teen for a while, wondering why he was saying that.

"And what you are trying to say is…?" She asked. Paul shrugged.

"Don't know what Adelheit is planning on doing but I'm sure it is something that wasn't needed in the first place. Although I quiet thank her this time." With that Paul walked away. Dawn was questioned but didn't bother following him. She walked downstairs to the convenience store and sat down on the table.

"Phew." She sighed as she leaned against the back of the chair and she looked up at the sky. So clear and blue. It was warm April morning. Time flied faster than ever. Her best friends, except for the ones from the orphanage, are now dating their 'perfect' one. Dawn wondered to herself, "When will my perfect one come?"

Meanwhile, when Dawn was staring at the sky wondering whether she will actually meet the boy that would lover her, May and Drew were listening to Zoey's explanation about the schedule and the song plot and other things that seemed pretty useless.

"This is weird since most of the time I was the wild one and Drew was calm one. At least, calmer than I am." May said with a small laugh.

"This time you two will be opposites. Plus this cat isn't as wild as you." Zoey said and the three laughed.

"Very funny Zoey. Well I always wanted to be royal." May said as she touched her bottom lip with her index finger. Drew blinked and paid attention to the sheet of paper. He read it over and over again and sighed.

"Can we start as soon as possible? I want to finish this soon. I am tired these days." Drew said without thinking but it hurted May slightly.

"Yeah I guess we should do it quickly. I need to work on something with Kenny."

"Ooh! Finally having a date?" May asked as she leaned close to the red haired girl.

"What? No! This is my job, remember?" Zoey protested but she was red without doubt.

"Very convincing Zoey. Well, I need to go now. I have to prepare for the pop quiz." Drew said as he stood up and headed to the door. He waved goodbye and he was out of May's sight. May lied down on the couch, facing the ceiling and stared at it. Zoey turned her laptop on and started to type something in. They were silent for a while until May opened her mouth.

"You know, maybe I have a chance." May said and Zoey looked up from the screen and blinked.

"Of course you do. He is falling for you, I guess. Slowly and slowly. By the time we finish this thing he is going to ask you out." Zoey said as she turned her attention back to the screen.

"I just wish that you are right."

"Yeah, pray for this project to go well then." Zoey said.

"What project?" May sat up. Zoey, after realizing what she said, covered her mouth.

"Um, er, um." She closed her laptop and ran out the door.

"Zoey Noy! Explain to me!" May chased after Zoey. Zoey was fast but May was faster. And what's more Misty was coming so Zoey crashed into the carrot-top. They both fell down.

"Ouch! What was that?" Misty asked as May stopped in front of them.

"Ms. Noy here has something that she is hiding from us." May said as she helped Misty up.

"What secret? I- I don't have a secret!" Zoey said while waving her hands very quickly. But it would be stupid for Misty and May if they actually bought that.

"Tell us." Misty said, her hands on her hips now.

Zoey dusted herself as she stood up from the ground.

"I can't tell you now. I promise to tell you later."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

"Swear on your laptop?"

Zoey sighed, "Swear on my laptop." May and Misty grinned.

…

"Here you go." One of the staffs handed Drew a hairband with brown cat ears on it. The band was in the same shade of green as Drew's hair color.

"Thank you." Drew said as he put it on. Then a hair stylist came and hid the band almost perfectly. He looked at himself in the mirror and he actually looked almost like he was born with cat ears. The ears were pretty realistic that he was afraid if this was made of the real cat.

He thanked the stylist and turned to May who was wearing the similar hairband except the ears were snowy white and the band was in the chestnut color. She was smiling, wearing a dress designed for her and the music video.

He walked up to her and sat down right beside her. May was looking at herself in the mirror, adjusting her hair.

"You know I wish we can finish filming today. I can't dress up like this for few days." Drew started talking.

"I like my outfit. It makes me look elegant. Something that I never tried in my life." May said still looking at the mirror. She did look elegant. Unlike the day they recorded the song she looked really pretty. That day she just wore simple white sweatshirt and black jeans along with her signature bandanna but black.

"How do I look?" She asked.

Drew examined her and smiled, "You look better without your bandanna."

May's eyes danced for a moment with a small smile formed on her lips. "Thanks. But I prefer my bandanna, it feels weird without it." She said as she touched the point of the ear.

"I see…" Drew said and stared down at the floor. Still thinking that she looks better without that piece of fabric.

"Guys, are you ready?" Zoey called and the two both stood up.

"Coming! Let's give all we got, okay?" May asked and Drew nodded.

May, Leaf and Dawn sat down on the couch as they turned Zoey's laptop on. Zoey was out to meet Kenny, Marina was with Jimmy having a date on Veilstone City and Misty promised to take Ash out on a dinner date so she was gone.

"It used to be really crowded." Dawn said.

"I miss those old days but this is fine by me." May said and they went to YouTube.

"I hope I don't look like a fool." May said looking very nervous.

"I know you did right. It will be fine, really." Leaf said in big sister way as she clicked the video.

"Here it goes!" May squealed.

A loud cheerful music cranked up with the title, 'Ah, What a Wonderful Cat Life' in a cute font and small black cat paws around it.

Drew: "There's and adorable lady over there. With the purest white fur who has caught my stare,

Tonight the moon is especially bright so why don't you and I play together outside?"

On the rooftop, Drew was sitting with green T-shirt, brown vest, brown short pants and round brown shoes. He had brown pointy cat ears and brown tail as well. He was looking inside the window, to the female cat with white ears and white tail with red ribbon on the end. She had white blouse, brown button-up vest with golden buttons, long red skirt that covered her knees and a scarlet collar with a golden bell.

"Cats only live once and that's no lie.

So c'mon, let loose, don't waste your life inside."

Drew explained to May, who was listening with the expression of 'I'm bored to hell.'

"Silly collars just keep you from being free. I can bite it off, sit still dear, allow me"

Drew asked with seductive smile as he slowly reached her collar but May quickly slapped his hand away. He rubbed his hand with cute frown.

"Strays have the most fun nyan nyan nyan

Stealing fish to eat"

The scene showed Drew's flashback about snatching a fish from a store and running away and the shop owner, Zoey chasing him

"And chasing all the birds"

Another flashback of Drew chasing the pigeons

"Humans have to work while I can just nap without a single care in the world."

Another flashback showed Drew looking down at the people working on the roof top and then closing his eyes.

"You could be free to nyan nyan nyan "

The scene shifted back to the rooftop of May's as Drew was facing May.

"You can meet all my friends and dance the night away."

Drew said pointing at other 'cats', Gary and Jimmy, who didn't look so glad to be there, waiting for Drew to finish flirting. May rolled her eyes.

"Alright, take my hand, jump out that window and follow my lead!"

Drew said, trying to draw May out of the room but May stepped back a little.

May: "There's an obnoxious stray cat over there!"

May sang with a smirk as she looked up at the window at Drew.

"With glowing wide eyes that have caught me unaware.

You talk with pride and talk real sweet."

May said pointing at the sparkling eyes of Drew, walked up to him and slightly pushed Drew's lips with her fingertip.

"But even though I'm young I'm not that naïve."

She crossed her arms and tilted her head cutely.

"Cats only live once and that's no lie that's why I spend my days safely inside."

May said as matter of factly.

"This collar means the world and more to me, if you broke it you could never pay the fee."

She asked, her hand pointing at the collar and Drew shrugged. She humphed, looked at him mockingly.

"I am royalty nyan nyan nyan

I am fed and loved,"

She said, having a flashback of getting a salmon for her meal

"and made the best that I can be."

May threw her hair, showing off how carefully it had been brushed.

"And even though I'm scared, in my routine I'm daily give baths to keep me looking clean."

May said having a flashback of hot watertub.

"And unlike me, nyan nyan nyan

You have no one watching you to keep you safe from where you go."

May asked tapping Drew's chest then slammed the window, closing it. Drew chuckled.

"Tomorrow you could be run over by a car, and who would even know?"

May said, thinking of Drew standing in front of the car, running toward him. Drew shook his hands to make the thinking cloud disappear.

Drew: "This stubbornness of yours I find it quiet lovely too. In fact I think you'll find, I'm only more in love with you."

Drew said with a smirk as he put his head on his palm. The window was transparent so they could see each other.

May: "Ara such a blunt honesty, even though that's a start clumsy ways like that won't win my heart."

May sang as Drew pouted and sighed, disappointed, making May look like she was almost sorry for the stray 'cat'.

Drew: "I will tell you my dream nyan nyan nyan

To leave this place and see a different scene."

Drew said as his thinking cloud showed himself heading to Alaska

"To run far north, away from the city skies I wanna see the aurora through these eyes."

Drew was standing in Alaskan forest with warm coat, looking up at the amazing view of Northern lights.

"If you were to be with me nyan nyan nyan

We would run away, you would finally be free."

Drew looked at sideways and showed May with warm coat looking up at the aurora, happy and amazed.

"But I feel that one wish will not come true."

Scene shifted back to the rooftop, Drew looking down sadly.

May: "My lifestyle you see nyan nyan nyan

Is not one that is changed so easily."

May started, showing her room filled with expensive objects and toys.

"My owner loves me more than the world, how could I break the heart of a fragile little girl?"

May said as her thinking cloud showed the blue haired girl, Dawn smiling brightly. May made a sad expression as if only thinking about it made her guilty and sad.

"Wait, you're gonna leave me, nyan nyan nyan

We were just having fun, laughing about nothing."

Drew was about to turn around and wave at the brunette.

"Wait!"

May said, as she opened the window and Drew turned around, his expression curious.

"um maybe you'd come back again?"

She said with bit of hesitation and her face had pleading expression.

"I will be waiting."

Drew smirked and May smiled. Drew ran and jumped to the another rooftop, leaving May smiling. The song ended as May closed the curtain while blushing.

Dawn squealed, "This is so adorable! Finally Zoey is writing something that isn't horrible." May said.

"Um, Hello? Forgot about our songs? Most of them are written by her." Dawn laughed and scratched back of her neck at Leaf's words.

"You know, if my partner for duet was Drew that means that you are automatically going to sing with Paul."

Dawn's smile faded away. Leaf nudged May with her elbow. "Ow." May complained

"Can we please not talk about him?"

"Do you seriously still hate him?" Leaf asked. Dawn shook her head.

"I just don't want to have him and I singing a love duet as a topic of the conversation I'm involved." Dawn said.

"He's a nice guy except for being the King of Grumpiness. He cares about you a lot." May said.

"Yeah, whatever I don't care." Dawn buried her head into her face, currently in her thinking mode.

Leaf tapped her chin, "What's your real problem with him?"

"That he likes me."

"I know you are lying." Dawn looked up and looked at Leaf.

"How do you know if I'm lying? I don't even know if I'm saying the truth or not."

Leaf shrugged.

"I have a feeling that you are not telling us the truth."

"You sound like Zoey." Dawn complained. Leaf laughed and May giggled.

"Zoey was the most mature one of us. In every ways she was our older sister." May said, bringing the memory back. Not so good, not so bad, something that most memories are.

"Where is she anyway?" Leaf asked.

"Hanging out with her future husband." May snickered.

"He's not my future husband!" Said Zoey who just entered the room.

"Ooh, nice timing." Dawn said.

"Then why else would you hang out with Kenny?" May asked and Zoey threw a cushion at her.

"Ouch." May said with sarcasm after it hit her on the face.

"Serves ya right." Zoey growled.

"Let's change the subject, how's it with you and Drew?" Leaf said, immediately making May's face horrified and Zoey's face bright.

"Just the usual." May said.

"What's the usual?" Dawn asked.

"Do you seriously want to talk about your ex-boyfriend on a subject like this?" May asked.

"I don't mind. He's not mine anymore anyway. Why should it matter?" Dawn asked and May sighed, giving up.

"I can't do anything right now."

"Yes you can, you can lure him." Leaf said.

"That's not like me."

"That will give him a shock and will make him find himself falling for you." Dawn said.

"You guys are not helping me with anything, do you know that?" May asked.

"At least try." Zoey said.

May looked up and sighed. The ceiling won't tell her the solution but it did help her calm her down.

Phew, over now! And Divine Diva is almost facing the end!

It will be over by August and after 3 weeks I will start my new fanfic, either Yoru Hana or Fate's Play
