Chapter Six
After the mess was cleaned up, and the Sheriff was nice enough to agree to faking the death of the Winchesters, Sam and Dean turned to head for the door.
"I meant to ask." The sheriff called to their retreating backs.
They paused and turned back, as he stepped forward speaking in a low voice, as if it was a secret.
"Who was the woman?"
Sam and Dean looked at one another in confusion.
"Sorry? What woman?" Dean asked.
"The short one, with the long blond hair, the one who brought the borax? I couldn't find any in the closet, and she just sort of showed up with it."
Again, the brothers glanced at each other. "We don't know what you're talking about." Sam responded. "We didn't bring a woman with us, whoever she was, must have been someone from here."
The sheriff looked a bit baffled this time. "Huh. Yeah, I guess maybe." He raised a hand to his head, and rubbed his face. He was sure he didn't know her, and fairly certain she hadn't been a dream. "Well either way, thanks for your help." He mumbled, as he wandered off.
"Weird." Dean said as they walked to the car. Sam didn't respond. "Don't you think?"
Sam climbed into the passenger seat of the car they were still stuck with, as Dean threw a duffel bag, with the leviathan's heads inside, into the trunk.
Dean climbed in and looked at his brother, "Sam?"
"What Dean? Yeah, it's weird, so what about it?"
"Geez Sam, what's the deal?"
Sam looked down at his shoes, "nothing, let's go."
Dean started the car without protest, and drove for a while. Silence, and tension. Two of the things Dean liked least, because it meant Sam was angry about something.
Dean pulled off the side of the road a little bit later, he found a park that had a bridge. Good enough place as any to get rid of the extra cargo they were holding in their trunk.
He tried to make light of the situation, bring Sam out of his funk, but when it didn't work he realized Sam was angrier than he thought.
When he finally persisted enough, he was shocked, and dismayed as Sam made it clear he knew what had really happened to Amy.
Shit, he thought to himself. Fake Dean must have told Sam everything. Or maybe just enough to rock the boat till it finally capsized.
Had Dean killed Amy? Yes, he had. Because it was his job to kill things that were dangerous, whether they were friends with Sam or not. He was just going to have to understand.
Unfortunately, Sam disagreed. Dean stood in place, and watched his brother walk away, with his bags hanging from his shoulder. He stood there long after Sam turned the corner in the distance, heading, who knew where.
"Perfect Dean, just freaking perfect." Dean muttered to himself under his breath. Now was not a good time for either one of them to be hunting alone. Hopefully after some time to himself, Sam would feel the same way, angry or not.
He headed back to the trunk, zipped the duffel bag, and lifted it out. He walked back a bit, to a nearby gravel road, and bent to scoop some rocks into the bag to weigh it down.
He put in two or three handfuls, and heard a noise on his right, that sounded like people arguing. He stopped what he was doing and looked into the trees.
A beautiful girl caught his eye, as she wandered out of the trees looking over her shoulder and speaking to someone behind her. She stopped abruptly at the tree line, and seemed startled to see him. She smiled, and reached behind her, pulling the arm of a man who had just stumbled over a fallen tree.
"Beautiful day for a jog, right?" She stuttered loudly, as she began running past him, dragging the guy behind her along, as they headed down a path on Dean's left.
The guy just sort of waved, and Dean just watched them till they were out of sight around the bend in the trees toward the lake. He quickly put two more handfuls of gravel into the bag, and zipped it. He rushed to the bridge and threw it as hard as he could over the side, and into the water.
He climbed back into the car, and started the engine. As he drove off, he looked into his rear view mirror, at the spot the pair had come out of the trees. He didn't know what they were really doing back there, but he was pretty sure it wasn't jogging. The guy was wearing a suit, and seriously, who jogs in a bow tie?
The Doctor's legs were feeling heavier, and heavier, and he finally stopped and put his head between his knees. Panting, trying to catch his breath.
"Jogging Alice? Really?" He shouted at her retreating form.
She stopped, sighed, and turned back to where he had put a stop to their run. "I'm sorry! I panicked!"
The Doctor sat on the ground, and then laid on his back one arm thrown over his eyes. "Well I told you I wasn't sure exactly where he was, you should have been more careful! And we've run at least a mile, I'm sure he isn't following us."
Alice plopped down next to him and patted him on the stomach, "first of all, it wasn't a mile. You're getting soft. Secondly, I should have been more careful? You were the one arguing with me about nothing!"
He sat up abruptly. "Oh I'm sorry! The survival of the human race is "nothing" now is it?!"
"Oh my gosh! It was a bee, I killed ONE bee, let it go!"
"Fine! But we are revisiting this subject on a future date." He replied, pointing a finger in her direction. "So now what?"
He got to his feet, and pulled her up next to him. She shrugged, "we follow him, where do you think he went? And where was Sam?"
"Oh I'm sure they're off to find something else to kill." He muttered as he dusted the dirt off his suit.
"Oh stop."
"What? It's what they do Alice, they hunt and kill."
Alice folded her arms and looked at him defiantly. "They don't always kill. And most of the time, they SAVE. If anyone can have respect for that, it should be you. Besides, you had fun helping them, admit it." She nudged him with her shoulder.
He looked down at her big blue eyes and her wicked smile, "true enough, I suppose. Alright, back to the Tardis, let's see where they're headed."
They were climbing up a steep staircase from the alley where the Tardis was parked, to the street of a small town that could have been anywhere, but turned out to be in Louisiana.
The streets were bustling with people, and traffic was quite heavy. They stood on the sidewalk taking in their surroundings as the sun was just starting to set.
"So Sam's not here, but Dean is?" Alice asked again, she was confused as to why they had separated.
"Yes Alice, I told you that twice already. I chose to follow THIS Winchester, do you have an issue with that? Because I can find Sam."
"No, I was more thinking out loud than anything."
The Doctor wandered around, with Alice in tow, both of them searching for any sign of Dean, or danger that might be lurking in the area.
As an hour passed, it got dark and Alice noticed something strange.
"Where is everybody?"
"Yes, I was wondering that myself."
Alice stopped and looked around herself, in the small time they had been here, the streets had completely emptied and it was eerily quiet.
And then she saw it. "There." Alice pointed at something in the distance.
They were still two blocks from where the impala was parked. According to the Doctor it was just a few days since they had last saw him, but Dean seemed to have re-acquired his baby.
They took a few steps forward when they heard voices. A group of people came out of a side street in front of them, and stopped on the sidewalk between Alice, and the Doctor, and the impala.
"Oh dear." The Doctor muttered, as the group stopped talking and just watched them with strange smiles on their faces.
"Alice, we need to run." He said softly, as he grabbed for her hand.
"Okay." She didn't argue, she knew better.
They turned and took off back the direction they had come from, and Alice felt the terror rising, as the group of strangers started to pursue them.
"What are they?" She shouted as the Doctor dragged her up one street and down another, trying to lose them.
He pulled her around a corner, and into a dark alleyway. The Tardis was still blocks away, and Alice hoped the Doctor knew where he was going, because she felt completely lost.
"Doctor?" She shouted again.
"Just run Alice, we can talk later."
The alley was dark, and full of obstacles. Alice did her best to navigate behind him as he led the way with the glow of his screwdriver. But it turned out not to be enough. She grunted in pain as she tripped over something and fell to her knees.
"Alice!" The Doctor stopped and turned to help her to her feet.
"It's fine. I'm fine." She grunted, as she got up. Then she quickly realized she was wrong, when she tried to take a step.
She winced in pain as she put pressure on her ankle, and couldn't help the small cry that escaped her lips. She could hear the group of people now, it was only a matter of time before they were found.
The Doctor lifted Alice and carried her to a dark doorway, he used the screwdriver and opened the door to a back room, of what looked like a restaurant.
He placed her on her feet, and lifted her chin to look into her eyes.
"Listen closely. The Tardis is a few blocks from where we are. I want you to go back the way we came, go right two streets, and then left. You should see the alley stairs from there, you have your key right?"
Alice lifted the chain from around her neck, showing him the key. "Yes, but what about you?"
He smiled, "I'm going to lead our new friends on a little chase."
He opened the door, and took a step outside. "I'll meet you at the Tardis in just a few minutes."
Alice heard someone yell, "He's here!" And then she heard the group's shouts.
"What are they?!" She shouted one last time as he went to close the door behind himself and prepared to run.
"Just your run of the mill vampires Alice. Nothing to worry about." He smiled and took off in the direction they had been traveling when Alice fell.
Alice swallowed, vampires? Awesome. She hobbled to the door and listened as the people chasing them followed the Doctor down the alley and out the other side. She opened the door slowly, looking around for any danger.
They alley was clear, and she could hear the shouting off to her left. She went right, and walked as quickly as she could on her hurt ankle using the directions the Doctor gave her. She could only be grateful that it seemed the ankle wasn't broken, just twisted.
She was getting closer, and starting recognizing the landmarks of where they started their search for Dean. She crossed the now empty street, and was almost to the stairs when she heard it. Someone was following her, she looked behind her, but saw nothing. The fear rose again, as she rushed forward trying to get to the safety of the Tardis. The steps were moving faster, and getting closer.
She panicked and started running. Her fatal mistake. She lost her footing about halfway down the stairs, and screamed in fear as she realized she was moving too fast to stop herself. She fell hard, and was completely disoriented as she rolled to the bottom of the staircase.
She heard the footsteps coming toward her, but found she couldn't do or say anything as she passed out and blackness over took her.
