Summary: Steve and Alexia have an all but relaxing day home from work.

A McGarrett Day Off

2003

After going for a run early that morning, Steve had gone to shower while Alexia was making breakfast. He had a few weeks at home for now, which was great since they had just gotten married a few months ago. Today was going to be perfect because he and Alexia both had the day off. Out of the shower now, he had started to get dressed, pulling his t-shirt over his head to finish.

"AHHHHH!"

"Lex!" Steve called, running down the stairs. Turning the corner into the kitchen, he spotted her standing on top of the counter. "Baby, what's wrong?" She was pointing at the ground near the cabinets under the sink. "What, what?" he asked with a mix of concern and confusion. What was she doing up there?

"There's a mouse," Alexia squeaked out, managing to sound a little like a mouse herself. Steve's head hung for a moment, gathering his thoughts.

"A mouse?" Steve raised his eye brows and she nodded.

"I think it ran under the sink," she pointed again.

"You just made my heart stop over a mouse," Steve pointed out to her with how she was screaming.

"If you want to be dramatic about it, yes," Alexia nodded in agreement, turning every so often to see if it moved.

"I'm being dramatic?" Steve laughed, resting his hands on the counter, looking up at her standing there. "I thought you were dying."

"I might if you don't kill the damn thing," Alexia snapped and he held up his hands, back off.

"C'mon," Steve motioned. "Baby, come down from there."

"I'm not coming down Steve!" Alexia refused. "Not till you get it."

"Sweetheart," Steve tried to keep from laughing at her but it was hard right now. "Lex, come on. It's ok." She sat down on the counter so she was at least eye level with him. "Go get a shower and I'll get the mouse." She didn't move. "It's probably more scared of you than you are of it," he pointed out.

"I find that highly unlikely," Alexia said and he sighed.

"Do you want me to carry you to the stairs?" he offered.

"Would you?" Alexia bit her lip and Steve nodded, obliging her by picking her up princess style off the counter. "Steve, there it is!" she shouted as it ran out from it's hiding place through the middle of the kitchen floor.

"Ok, well here, I'll-" Steve meant to put her down so he could at least try to catch this thing and calm her down.

"No!" she protested, holding onto him tighter. "Don't put me on the floor!" Meanwhile, the mouse was running around the kitchen, trying to find a new place to hide, scared itself by all the noise.

"Well, would you rather I hold you in one arm and it in the other?" Steve asked sarcastically.

"Steve-"

"You're hitting the floor babe," he said, letting go of her legs so her feet landed on the ground. She let go of him immediately and took off for the stairs.

"AHHHHHHH!" she screamed again as she was running even though it wasn't anywhere near her. "EW! EW! EW! EW!" she exclaimed with each step up the stairs. Steve sighed, rubbing his forehead as the mouse was already hiding again. Today had certainly taken an interesting turn. Hearing a knock at the door, he figured it was probably one of the neighbors who had heard her screaming so much. Turned out, the neighbors did one even better.

"Hey Chin," Steve greeted his friend who was on duty currently with HPD.

"Hey," Chin smiled back, figuring nothing was going on; after all, it was Steve and Lex. "We got a call from one of your neighbors about a possible domestic disturbance? Said they heard a lot of screaming."

"Ah," Steve nodded, figuring it had been that. "Yeah." He nodded back at the stairs. "Lex saw a mouse."

"Mmmm," Chin nodded understandingly. "I figured it was something like that." He laughed a little at the memory. "Did I ever tell you guys about the spider nest incident of 2001 over at our place? Malia wouldn't stop screaming."

"Spider nest?" Steve made a face and Chin nodded. "Please, for the love of God, don't ever tell this one about that."

"Is that Chin?!" Alexia called from upstairs.

"It is!" Steve called back.

"Is he here because of the mouse?!"

"He's here because the neighbors think I'm murdering you!" Steve called up to her and Chin laughed.

"Sorry Chin!"

"It's ok!" Chin assured her.

"Did you ask him if he has any mouse traps?!" Alexia called now.

"Why would I-" Steve started back but then realized this was ridiculous that she was hiding upstairs. "Lex, baby, you know mice don't just stay on the first floor, right?" There were immediate foot steps heading for the stairs. "I'm gonna regret that," Steve realized.

"Probably," Chin nodded in agreement, then smiled when he saw Alexia on the stairs behind Steve. "Mouse trouble?"

"Wanna help?" Alexia asked hopefully.

"I gotta get back to work," Chin told her. "I'll check at my parents' though, see if they have any traps."

"Thanks buddy," Steve told him, closing the door as Chin left.

"Oh my God, Steve!" Alexia gasped, leaping off the last step and latching onto his back.

"What is it?" Steve asked patiently, looping his arms under her legs to support her on his back.

"It's over there!" she pointed. "By the couch."

"Yeah?" Steve asked. "It's not moving."

"Maybe it's dead," she said hopefully.

"Maybe your screaming scared it to death," he commented, inching closer, his wife still on top of him. "Baby."

"Yeah?"

"That's a sock."

The rest of the morning was interesting to say the least. Steve found where the mouse must have gotten in, a hole in the wall in the cabinet under the sink that lead to the outside. With the mouse no where to be found, Steve set out to at least fix the hole so nothing else got in. Alexia was content to sit on top of the counter cross-legged and watch, still stubborn about touching the ground.

"We need to find it soon," Alexia commented, Steve's top half disappearing under the sink while he patched up the wall.

"What's this we business?" Steve teased her. "I'm pretty sure you're never getting off the counter." He couldn't see, but she rolled her eyes playfully.

"What if it has babies?" she asked seriously.

"I'm not the doctor," he answered back. "But, I'm pretty sure you need two mice for that. And we just have the one."

"Ok, smart ass," she said in exasperation. "What if it got pregnant outside, then came inside to have it's babies?"

"Then, we'll have to burn the house down," Steve joked and she laughed. "I'm serious. Make it look like an accident and then move some place nicer."

"That's just what I wanted to hear," John commented, having let himself into the house, carrying a plastic bag. "After you two already got a domestic call this morning."

"Hey dad," Steve greeted him, finished now and climbing out from under the sink.

"Hi John," Alexia greeted him as he stood by her at the counter. "What's all that?"

"For your mouse problem," John said, setting the bag on the counter. "Heard from Chin after he explained the call this morning, so I brought over some traps left from the old house."

"Thanks dad," Steve said and Alexia said thanks as well.

"Sure thing," John nodded. "I gotta get back from my lunch. Good luck," he laughed a little, letting himself out.

"Thanks!" Alexia called after him, pulling traps out of the bag and setting them on the counter.

"I think he meant that for me for dealing with you," Steve smirked at her and she made a playful face back.

Alexia went out to get lunch while Steve set the traps out around the first floor of the house. It all seemed silly at first, but now he really just wanted to get this thing out of the house so things could go back to normal. Having set out the traps, he sat and waited, listening to see if any of them had gone off. There was nothing but silence though. Maybe it ran outside again before he patched up the wall. That's when he noticed it going across the living room floor, the tiny piece of cheese in it's mouth from the trap.

"Oh, you gotta be kidding me," Steve said in annoyance. How did that even happen? It ran under the tv stand to hide, and he started crawling on his stomach on the floor to try to find it. This was enough.

"Hey Steve," Alexia said, opening the door as she came home. "What are you doing on the-"

"Shhh," he hushed her, not wanting her to scare it.

"Is it under there?" she asked seriously.

"Just...go in the next room, ok?" he said, taking this super seriously now too. No way he wasn't catching this thing after all of this. He could see it under the tv stand. Reaching for it slowly now...

"Dammit," Steve said as it took off, running towards the kitchen. "Lex, open the door!" he said, hurrying into the next room.

"What are you-AH!" she exclaimed, throwing a take out box at it and missing.

"Just get the door!" Steve instructed and she opened the door. He stepped towards the mouse and it ran in the correct direction out onto the porch, Alexia slamming the door shut.

"Wow, I'm glad that's over," Alexia grinned now, coming back to the counter. "Thanks baby."

"Uh huh," Steve nodded, shaking his head a little at the day's events. He surveyed the take out box on the ground, the contents spilled all over the floor. "That was mine, wasn't it?" Alexia examined the food on the floor from where she was standing.

"Mhmm," she nodded, biting her lip to keep from grinning.

"Come here," he laughed, grabbing her around her waist, making her squeal at first as he tickled her before lifting her onto the counter to kiss her.
