Now, Kevin didn't know much about relationships. He had never, up until Edd, been involved in, close to or wanted a boyfriend or girlfriend. He really didn't. He knew of them, but he truly didn't understand most of the parts involved in such an affair. He didn't care much anyway- why should he? In all honesty, he never even thought he would be involved in one for some time, and he certainly didn't expect to be a part of one.
It was all very new to him, to say the least. Not that he was complaining of course, he was very happy to call himself Edd's boyfriend. He didn't know much about relationships, but neither did Edd. He figured if they were going to figure it out, they might as well figure it out together. Sometimes it was hard, a lot of times it was awkward, and even a few times Kevin wondered what on earth he was doing, but they did just fine.
Kevin had to learn to not lose his temper so easily, and his boyfriend had to learn to communicate. The swimmer was absolutely terrible at conveying his feelings, and for some time it created a bit of a problem. While Kevin quickly learned to read Edd's small facial expressions, he was still figuring out how the boy reacted to certain things. He had no idea that he hated Christmas music, and he never would have guessed that he loved scented candles.
So, when Edd suggested that they go hiking, Kevin was more than a little confused. The boy rarely suggested dates, mostly leaving the ginger to the task, and Kevin guessed it was because the dark haired boy was bashful in such matters. And while going to the new Marvel movie had sounded fun, Kevin was thrilled that his boyfriend had given his input and he readily agreed.
That next Saturday morning they packed two back packs with the necessary materials and headed out, walking about a mile or so to the trail head. It was a popular hiking spot for the college town, though on this particular morning they had gone early enough most students were not even awake yet, giving them a quiet, peaceful walk up the mountain. They only encountered two other beings- a man and his dog as they ran down the trail.
Kevin, outfitted in a loose t-shirt and cargo pants, had a good time weaving in and out of the trees, grabbing leaves from trees and throwing them at Edd, who had been all but silent that morning.
"-and it was like, bam, there ya go! It took three seconds, tops. The professor even looked shocked, which was pretty freaking funny. You think after twenty years of teaching digital electronics he'd know that, y'know? Guess he's not a know-it-all, like you are," Kevin said, finishing a story and grinning over his shoulder at said know-it-all, pausing when he noticed that Edd was a few steps behind him.
"Hey, you alright? You wanna stop or something?" he asked, cocking his head slightly. He knew the swimmer couldn't be out of breath, because he wasn't and Edd was a lot more physically active than him. Yet the boy had stopped, his hands grasping the shoulder straps of his pack tightly as he looked through the foliage. After a moment, recognition dawned on him and he gave the nerd in front of him a weak smile.
He took Kevin's hand and pulled him off the path, pushing a few branches out of the way as he did. The smaller boy followed, utterly confused but willing to find out what on earth his boyfriend was up to. After a minute or two, the trees began to thin out, and Edd pulled him until they reached a clearing.
A clearing that doubled as a cliff, with a sixty foot drop and a view of the entire city and the cities surrounding. As the nerd inched towards the edge his jaw dropped. He could see everything. He let go of the leaf in his hand, letting the soft breeze pick it up and take it away. He ginned, holding tightly Edd's hand as he leaned over, looking over the edge carefully. As he straightened, Edd came up behind him, pointing out to the mountains on the horizon.
"The sun is rising," he stated simply, bumping shoulders with the shorter boy. The sky was bright, and the area around the mountains was a bright pink, ushering in the bright sun. Kevin watched with rapt attention as the sky changed color, the pink and orange bleeding over the rest of the sky, bright white light peeking just over the mountain peak.
"Wow," Kevin breathed, grinning. He put an arm around his boyfriend's waste, leaning against him comfortably. Edd responded, his long arms going around the smaller boy, his chin resting atop the smaller boy's head. After a moment he shifted, moving so that his cheek was pressed to the boy's forehead, and Kevin noticed the hands pressed to his sides were shaking.
"Edd, you okay? You're shaki-"
He was cut off as lips pressed to his own firmly. He was surprised, but grinned slightly, gripping the cloth on his boyfriend's shirt and pulling him closer. Edd reached up and grabbed at the smaller hands, one of his hands entwining the boy's fingers, the other reaching into his pocket a moment before meeting Kevin's second hand, a cold metallic something suddenly pressing against the nerd's nimble fingers.
Not breaking their kiss, Edd maneuvered the object into its rightful place, afterwards letting his hands move up the smaller boy's arms and to his neck and hair, pulling the boy that much closer and deepening the kiss that much more. Kevin, confusion tugging at his euphoric mind, ran his thumb over the cold thing pressed to his hand.
It was a ring.
He opened his eyes, leaning back slightly and raising his hand to inspect the object, his face covered in shock. A small, silver band was on the ring finger of his left hand, the new found sunlight making the light catch and bounce off the shiny metal. Before he could even gather the thought to speak, Edd stepped back, taking his small hands into his bigger ones, a shaky breath coming from the swimmer's lips before he dropped down on one knee, his face flushed and his smile nervous.
"Ohmygod," Kevin breathed, realization dawning on him.
"Kevin Thomas Barr," Edd said quietly, his voice making Kevin's heat beat out of his chest, the swimmer's famous gap on display as he grinned, "would you me the honor... of marrying me?"
Kevin let out a half sob, half laugh as he knelt down and launched himself into the swimmer's arms, winding his thin arms around the taller boy's neck and clinging to him almost desperately. He laughed again, tears pricking at his eyes. "Yes, of course, I would love to marry you," was all he could manage as he buried his face in his fiance's neck, relief and excitement almost too much for him to take.
Edd held him back tightly, letting out a sigh of relief as he rubbed his fiance's back, smiling widely. When Kevin had gotten over the shock, Edd pulled away from him enough to capture the smaller boy's lips with his own, letting out the emotions that had overwhelmed him that morning. Kevin reached up, cupping the back of Edd's neck, the ring cold against the taller boy's skin, making him smirk slightly.
Kevin jumped when Edd's hands roamed down to his waist, the swimmer's thumbs sneaking under the nerd's shirt and brushing against his bare skin. His gasp was sharp as the taller boy lightly scratched him, the sound like music to Edd's ears. Using all the control he could muster, Edd pulled back, grinning. Kevin kept his hands on his shoulders as he caught his breath, his cheeks red and his green eyes bright. He blinked, dumbfounded.
"How long have you been planning this?" he asked. He'd often made jokes about them getting eloped, since everyone seemed at school seemed to think they already had. It was all a joke to him, as he figured his boyfriend was far from being ready for something like that.
"A month," Edd admitted. Kevin grinned. Edd stood, holding out a hand and pulling the smaller boy to his feet. He dusted both of their knees off, smiling and taking Kevin by the hand and leading him back to the trail. They walked back together, Kevin animatedly making plans about the wedding, something he never thought he'd be so excited about. When it came to these things, Edd usually had a couple requests, but let Kevin decide the bulk of what happened. Every time he got annoyed or didn't agree with something, Kevin's innocent smile stopped him from saying anything. It was far too adorable for Edd to be mad at, and he sometimes found himself being half dragged around the city because of it.
As soon as they got back, Kevin phoned his father's house, pacing around the room with barely contained excitement. He put it on speaker phone, letting Edd hear as they waited for someone to pick up.
"Salutations!" came the answer. The nerd had been expecting this. His father was horrible about answering anything, and only with the doctor's help had Kevin been able to keep in touch with his father.
"Doc, hey! Is my dad there?"
"He is. Would you like me to get him?"
"If you can, would yo"u just put the phone on speaker? There's something I-well, we need to tell both of you."
There was a rustling, and Kevin could hear the Doc's soft voice as he explained what he was doing. After a moment, the Doc's distant voice could be heard.
"Alright. He can hear you."
"This better be good," came the man's teasing, his voice sounding thick with sleep. Kevin laughed silently, giddy as he looked from the phone to his fiance for reassurance. Edd nodded.
"Dad, we...uh...well," Kevin stammered, his nerves getting to him. His fiance squeezed his hand and he found courage in it, shutting his eyes tightly and speaking clearly.
"We're engaged, dad!" he said, listening hard as he heard the Doc gasp. His father, however, only spoke quietly.
"I swear, Junior, if you're messing with me-"
"It's not a joke, dad. I swear," Kevin said, laughing. "We're getting married, dad."
"Can Edd hear me right now?" Kevin's father asked. The boys shared a look, concerned.
"Yeah, he can," Kevin admitted, waiting.
"I'm going to assume this was your doing?" Kevin's father asked.
"Yes, it was," Edd said honestly, looking confident, the defiant look in his eye one that Kevin hadn't seen in a long time.
"Well. It's about damn fucking time."
The taller boy's face shifted from cautious anger to a wicked grin, looking straight at Kevin.
"Yes sir, it is."
Kevin could hear the Doc laugh, his voice light and full of relief. "Oh, this is so exciting! Have you picked a day?"
The smaller boy looked up at his fiance, who shrugged. "Uh, don't think so. After we graduate, I guess."
"Junior."
"Yeah dad?"
"We're coming up tomorrow. Looks like we've got a wedding to plan, and I ain't doin' it over the phone."
Kevin laughed. "Sure thing, dad."

Now, Kevin's father had never planned, attended or knew much about hosting a wedding. He really didn't. He knew of them, but he truly didn't understand most of the parts involved in such an affair. He didn't care much anyway- why should he? In all honesty, he never even thought he would be involved in one for some time, and he certainly didn't expect to be a part of one.
The task was a bit daunting to him at first, but he was determined to give his only child a proper wedding. That, and Dee was so damn excited about it he couldn't very easily slack off. They were the ones to break the news to the rest of the family, who were a little shocked but supportive for the most part. They were a religious family, and many had no idea his son was even dating anyone, let alone a boy. He informed them that while they were welcomed to disagree with the match, if they had a serious problem with it, they were not to attend the ceremony. It went over better than he thought it would, with many of them smiling and agreeing to attending.
Dee helped make the invitations, pick out the venue and even put together the photography. Kevin's father thought they boys would get sick of him interfering, but they seemed happy to have him involved. Edd especially, which surprised the man. Then again, he knew that Dee and the younger man had a sort of connection, and they had spent many long nights quietly talking with one another about who knows what. While the younger man certainly had a temper. Around Kevin, the anger turned to mischief, and around Kevin's father, it seemed to become a mix between respect and seriousness. With the doctor, however, he seemed to lose that side of him completely.
The two had teamed up to organize it all, taking into account all the aspects of a traditional wedding and how to re-create it for their purposes, as well as Kevin and his father's wishes so that it was as good a wedding as anyone could ask for. Kevin and Edd had decided to have a very simple wedding, set on a hillside. There were no more than a hundred people in attendance.
Most of Kevin' family was there, his small cousins staring in wonder at the pair. His uncles beamed with pride, and his aunts wiped happy tears from their cheeks. Edd hadn't even contacted his parents, as he knew they wouldn't have shown up. Kevin was fearful that in doing so, Edd would become very depressed that he had no one to support him on such an important day. And truthfully, he had been, the painful memories of his absent parents creeping into his mind and making it hard to stay positive as the day approached. However, about a week before the wedding, the Doc had approached him about it.
He had been sitting on the couch, leaning back and staring at the ceiling. The Doc had come in the house to find Kevin and remind him of something, but stopped when he noticed the posture the younger man was taking. He slowly entered the room, sitting beside the boy and softly putting a hand on his knee.
"What ails you?" he had asked softly, knowing the boy would tell him if he could find the words to do so. The boy had sighed, leaning forward and putting his elbows on his knees.
"I don't even know where they are right now. They could be dead," he had admitted quietly. Dee, knowing to whom the boy was referring, put a hand on the younger boy's shoulder in reassurance.
"May I confess something?" the doctor had asked, getting a small nod from the man next to him.
"I don't think it matters," he said, getting a puzzled look from Edd. "I know, I know. That isn't exactly a kind sentiment. But I mean it. If they had no interest in your injuries, your engagement or your graduation, I dare say they have no place at your wedding."
Edd put his face in his hands, knowing the doctor had a point, though the burning in his chest still bothered him. He was well aware that having them there wouldn't fix anything, and truly, it would probably make things worse.
Still.
"I know that their absence bothers you. And I am sorry. But perhaps, if you will allow it, we can remedy it."
Now Dee stood proudly next to Edd, replacing the boy's absent parents, his bright eyes shining with unshed tears. He moved a lock of hair out of his face, his small ponytail unable to hold the entirety of his kinky black hair. Edd, however, didn't move, though his hair was tickling his ears. He had ditched his beanie for this special occasion, his hair in loose, large waves around his shoulders. He clasped his hands tightly in front of himself, resisting the urge to find Kevin and run for it.
While it wasn't a traditional wedding, and Kevin was in no way a bride, they had decided to let him walk down the aisle in his white suit, his glasses gone and his his hair slicked back, his awkward bangs falling partly on his forehead. His white suit was stunning, contrasting greatly with Edd's black suit. Around the smaller boy's neck was a dog tag.
The night before the wedding the two boys had spent the night talking, both too nervous and excited to sleep. At one point Edd had reached around his neck and taken off the dog tags, putting the beloved chain around his fiance's neck, giving him an endearing smile.
"For luck," he claimed. Now, however, Edd noticed that instead of the regular two shiny metals, there was only one. Kevin had taken the M and F pieces off, safely tucking them in the box Edd's ring had come in, replacing them with a new tag that had a K on it.
He had two small flower girls, who held his hands, helping him walk down the aisle slowly. When Edd caught sight of him his smile dropped, and he stared openly at the boy who was soon going to be his husband. He bit back tears, smiling brokenly at the ginger before him.
He was the most beautiful person Eddward had ever seen.
The freckles on Kevin's cheeks, the brightness of his eyes, the bangs that never seemed to fall correctly, the tattoo hidden underneath his shirt, his knobby knees, they were all what made Kevin...Kevin. It was simultaneously heart breaking and hopeful, both endearing and terrifying. It was both a promise and lie, hot and cold, painful and pleasurable. Edd couldn't get enough of the feeling.
If this wasn't love he didn't know what was.
When Kevin finally came to the front and took his hands, Edd was on top of the world. He felt the boy shift, taking off the necklace and giving it back to him, his hands slowly moving back down to grasp Edd's in his.
"Can I be your family?" Kevin whispered, his eyes shut and his forehead pressed to Edd's. When the pastor asked Edd if he would take Kevin as his own, the boy opened his eyes, answering both the man and the ginger in front of him, his dark eyes bright with something Kevin had rarely seen in him before.
It was hope.
"I do."
When he pressed his lips to Edd's, Kevin could hear his father laugh, accompanied by Nat's cheer.
It was undoubtedly the best day of his life.
