Chapter 37 – I still love her

It had been almost a month since Connie had ruined the lives of Max and Zoe. Since, Max had only shown up to work a handful of times because most of the time he was too drunk to get there. Zoe had had a scan and found out that her baby was healthy and doing absolutely fine. She had the support of Dylan, Tess and Rita with anything that she needed. Everything was hell but there was nothing either of them could do about it now.

Max had just got into work at 10 o'clock and had gone straight to his office to find Connie waiting outside it. "What do you want?" He glared at her while moving her out of the away so he could get through the door. "I was checking you were alive, seeing the amount you are drinking at the moment." "Screw yourself Connie, like you care about anyone but yourself. You made it like this so don't start bitching about it now." She turned to walk away and Max threw a glass against the wall. Just then Robyn walked into the office. "Max! What's going on with you?" He sat down and began to cry, so Robyn walked in and shut the door. "Max? You ended it with her didn't you?" He looked up at her "Well done brainiac. Just leave me alone Robyn, I don't need anyone." He got up and left the room going downstairs to start his shift, but the first person he saw was Zoe. He took a deep breath before carrying on with work.

Zoe was managing to hold it all together, but she didn't know how long she could do it for. The shift was flying by and soon it was time for Zoe to get home. Before she had a chance to see anyone again she left and went straight home. Max on the other hand went to the pub again. "Lofty, please go after him. I can't let him get hurt anymore than he is. Try and get him to talk because this clearly isn't right" Robyn was desperate to see her brother happy again. "Oh give it a rest Robyn. People have relationships, people end them. He did the right thing ending it and letting Zoe focus on her career again." Rita was stood behind Connie while she was saying this and after she walked into her office Rita marched after her. She opened the door and slammed it shut behind her. "Just because you are a heartless cow does not mean everyone else here is too. We care about seeing our friends and loved ones hurt, unlike you. As for Zoe being focused on her career again, she's not because she's too worried about caring for her unborn child which now has a drunk for a father!" Connie was staring at Rita "I realise she's pregnant, maybe now she'll realise how hard it is being a mother stuck on her own!" Rita was eyeing Connie realising something was going on "If I find out this had anything to do with you, then you will wish you had never done it. Believe me on that." Rita stormed out of the office and realised that nobody had been stood listening which made her feel better.

Lofty had caught up with Max and gone for a drink with him. Max was already pretty gone while Lofty was still drinking his first drink. "Max, you were going to propose to Zoe a few weeks ago. Mate what changed, because someone who doesn't love someone doesn't get drunk everyday to fight their feelings." Max looked into his drink before answering him "We were happy weren't we. A house, an amazing woman, even trying to have a baby together… I guess the Ice Queen wins again." He carried on drinking "Ice Queen?" Lofty sat thinking for a few minutes remembering who he was on about. "What's Connie got to do with any of this?" Max looked at Lofty "What hasn't she? It's always her isn't it? Can't stand others happiness… If I hadn't told Zoe it was done, she was going to tell Zoe she had to leave the hospital, job… no more… all… gone." Max wasn't making a lot of sense but Lofty understood exactly what he was saying and he couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Come on man, you're going home now to sober up and this is being sorted tomorrow." Max was crying and let Lofty help him up. "I love her Lofty… I love her" "I know you do, I know."
