Dragon's Egg

"Father... I think I'm in love Lucy."

Igneel coughed out fire, tons of it. He wasn't even eating or drinking and yet he felt himself choking, hard. Natsu sat patiently, waiting for his Father's coughing spell to come to an end. When it finally did Igneel lifted his head to the heavens and inhaled a deep breath. He looked around to find his daughter, seeing her away from their clearing kneeling over a bunch of flowers.

"Did you hear me Father?" Natsu asked when he noticed his attention wasn't on him.

"Yes, don't say that again though if you don't want me to have a heart attack."

Natsu tilted his head, "heart attack?"

"Never mind that boy, how did you ever come to that conclusion?!"

He shrugged, "I don't know."

Igneel's patience wore thin with this one. He glared down at his son and poked his stomach.

"If you don't know, then how do you know you're in love with her, or did you mean to just say love instead? If that's the case then don't give me heart attacks like that." Igneel sighed.

"No, I meant in love."

Igneel started coughing out fire again and Natsu found it funny this time.

"You're trying to kill me son."

"No I'm not, I just thought you should know since you're our father and junk."

"Do you have any idea what that even means son?"

"Nope, not one clue."

"And yet you're in love with her?"

"Yup, completely."

Igneel wanted to drown his son. Natsu grinning brightly at him and stood up, dusting his pants off.

"Good talk Father, let's train now."

"Oh no, no, no. You sit, I'm going to be your teacher today and teach you what it means for a girl and a boy to love each other."

Natsu sat, curious on what his Father had to teach him, and sat through the lesson. Near the end Igneel thought his son would see reason, he saw anything but reason though.

"Yup, that pretty much described what I feel towards Lucy. I guess I have to marry her now, where is she?"

"No!" Igneel growled trapping his son under his claws.

"But you said-"

"You're only 8!"

"Oh, so there's an age limit or something? But what if someone steals Lucy from me? She's my teacher! My friend! My lover! I don't want her to belong to someone else!"

"So you're only in love with Lucy because you want her to stay yours?"

"No, she's funny too. She doesn't hate me a lot, she likes dragons, she's actually really strong too and entertaining. Isn't this why you brought her to me Father?"

"To be your friend Natsu, your friend, not your lover."

"So you never thought Lucy and I would end up together?"

Igneel became tongue tied, "well, I- not never- but- I."

"Father, I've always listened to you. Tell me what to do, I don't want to lose Lucy though."

His son was finally at the age to ask him advice about girls. Igneel's never felt so old.

"First off, don't marry the girl while you're both kids."

"Got it."

"Secondly... just wait Natsu. You two are only kids, you have yet to see the world. Aren't you two planning on exploring the world together?" He asked.

"Well, yeah."

"Then explore the world together, go on adventures and grow up. When you come back home I'll have the answers you seek."

"Alright, if you say so, but Lucy won't belong to anyone else right? What if someone tries to take her from me?"

"What have I been training you how to do for your whole life? If that happens beat the hell out of them."

Natsu grinned widely, "will do Father."

"Good, now go play with Lucy or something. And don't! Tell her you love her!"

"Don't you mean in love with her?"

"Just go!"

Natsu laughed as he ran to where Lucy was, tackling her on the ground and rolling around as they tried to get the one up on each other. Igneel moaned loudly and rubbed his head, his brain hurting.

"This is ridiculous, I wanted this but now that it's happened I don't want it. How could this have happened?" He mumbled.

Of course he wanted his two children to be together, but only when they were older and when they knew what together meant. They were only children right now, Natsu was only a child! How could he be sure what being in love was?

"That's it, he just doesn't know. He isn't sure and this is all really nothing so there's nothing I should be worrying about."

Igneel couldn't stop the image coming to his mind, of little Natsu's and Lucy's running around. He caught himself grinning and shook his head, growling loudly as he called out Natsu's name.

"Yes Father?" Natsu asked running back.

"Why are you suddenly in love with the girl?" He growled.

"I thought we were over this Father?"

"Natsu, just answer me."

"Fine," Natsu sighed, "well one day Lucy stopped bothering me and then she looked pretty for a while and then I found out we were tied together by a string and then I kissed her and then-"

"YOU WHAT?!" Igneel roared.

"Is everything alright Papa?!" Lucy asked.

"YOU'RE GROUNDED!" Igneel yelled at her.

Lucy's eyes widened, "what?!"

"I MEAN! I mean, just stay over there Lucy!" Igneel quickly covered then glared at his son.

"You kissed your teacher?"

"On accident. It was our birthday and she kissed my cheek so I tried to kiss hers back and she moved her face and then smack. Kiss. It felt weird, tingly. After that I remembered you once trying to explain girls to me before Lucy came and how I had to take responsibility and all now that we're getting an egg."

Igneel blinked, "I'm sorry son, a what?"

"An egg. A dragon egg of our own. You did tell me, from what I remember, that when I'd find a girl I loved and kiss her we would get a dragon egg and raise it as our own child."

Igneel wanted to kick his past's self ass so badly.

"Natsu, you don't get an egg from kissing."

"Really? But you said-"

"I was lying, you don't get eggs. Humans don't lay eggs."

"Why would a human lay an egg? I'm not stupid Father. A stork comes with our dragon egg and delivers it to us and-"

"Natsu, forget all of that. All of it. You and Lucy are not having an egg and will not get one from kissing, just remember that."

"Oh well... okay then. No egg for Lucy and me, doesn't change that I love her though Father."

"I didn't expect it too," though he was hoping it would.

"I don't think Lucy would be a good mother anyway, all she would do is teach the dragon things."

Igneel rolled his eyes and swallowed down his chuckles.

"Let's just never talk about this again Natsu until you return from your journey with Lucy, okay?"

"Alright Father, so for now I do nothing about the love?"

"Exactly."

"What if Lucy suddenly tells me she's in love with me? Do I still do nothing?"

"Well I wouldn't say nothing-"

"Do I lie and say I don't love her back?"

"Now lying is going a bit ove-"

"Do I tell her we can't have dragon eggs by kissing? Do I let her know nothing can happen? Do I tell her that when we see you again I can return her feelings? Do I-"

"ENOUGH! I DON'T KNOW! I DON'T KNOW! DO WHATEVER YOU WANT NATSU!" Igneel roared.

"Cool. I'm going to go play with Lucy then." Natsu said walking off towards her once again.

Igneel... had been beaten. He had met his match with Natsu's stupidity today. He didn't know what he was going to do, what he could do. He shouldn't even worry about it, that's what he told himself.

This was a big problem though.

"A big problem for my future self. Gee I hope future me doesn't discover a way to go back in time and kick my ass." Igneel sighed resting on the ground.

He waited for a minute to see if another one of him would come; when none did he sighed out in relief.

"Natsu and Lucy Dragneel. She can never leave us now, he won't be able to handle it if we both suddenly left his lives." Igneel mumbled staring up at the sky.

He feared for what the future held for his only son.
