Regret
Hayato looked down at the little girl watching television. Takeshi nudged him from behind. Sighing, the silver-headed man knelt beside his daughter.
"Takara," he began. "What do you want for your birthday?"
The soon-to-be five year-old turned to her dads and jumped up suddenly. "Can I have a doggie?"
Takeshi sighed, "Sweetie, we already told you no."
Standing beside his husband, Hayato noticed the devilish gleam in his daughter's eyes as she asked sweetly, "May I have a fish?"
Shaking his head, the taller man, spoke sadly, "No, sweetie, Kojirou would eat it."
"May I have a hamster?"
Hayato spoke up, "Sweetling, Uri would eat it."
Eyes twinkling, she persisted, "May I have a cat?"
Kneeling before his daughter, Takeshi's voice was full of regret, "Jirou would eat it."
Hands clasped delicately, she looked into he father's eyes and fluttered he eyelashes, "Daddy, I really, really want a pet like you and daddy." Leaning forward, she hugged Takeshi and sniffled, "Is there a pet that won't get eaten by Kojirou, Jirou, and Uri?"
Defeated, Takeshi looked towards his husband. Resigned, Hayato spoke reluctantly, "Your dad and I will talk about it."
Takara jumped up and grinned widely at her dads. "YAY!"
