Recognition for this prompt goes to jaelyn2001: "This was cute. Lol. Love them kissing. Also for Platt to be the one to find them. Prompt: Erin gets a job offer; she tells Jay that she might take it hoping he would tell her not to go."
**Kiss You**
Erin and Jay sat quietly in her parked car. Currently, they were tailing a suspect and he just arrived to his mother's residence. She knew he would be inside for a while, and in turn this brought her sometime in talking to Jay about the job offer she mentioned to him earlier. Circling her hands around the locked stirring wheel, she turned to face him, "So, what do you think?"
"About?" He pulled his eyes away from the suspect's front door. Halstead's eyes fell upon the avoiding ones of his partner.
"The offer," Erin reminded, unbuckling her seatbelt, "Should I go…or should I stay?"
A silence filled the small car space. She was consulting with him about such a life-changing decision. He didn't have the power to decide. It wasn't his decision to make, yet she was practically asking him to make it. His body relaxed against the cushion of the seat, "Do you want to go?" It was the best approach to make. Jay didn't want to tell her to do something that she had no intention of doing.
"I don't know," she shrugged.
Her eyes averted from her partner and out towards the suspect's home. A part of her regretted asking him, while another part wanted to press the issue. She was curious to see where he stood in his opinion. And even though she wouldn't admit it to him, she wanted him to ask her to stay.
"I'll support whatever you decide," He was being polite. He wanted her to stay, but he didn't want to be selfish about it. Voight wouldn't be happy in hearing that the only reason she stayed in Intelligence was because he was being a little kid about her leaving.
His support either way wasn't the response she was looking for. With a shrug of her shoulders, she responded, "That does not help my decision making process."
"I think you've already made up your mind," he gave her a small smile, "otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation." Halstead already knew her decision had been made. She wasn't fooling anyone, especially him. Erin had already decided on her choice, but she wanted to make sure she didn't make the wrong decision in staying or leaving.
"But we are," she whispered, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Why?"
Halstead forced his eyes back onto the red door of their suspect. Even though they were having a personal conversation, it didn't stop them from doing their jobs. Voight would hand them their asses if they allowed for their suspect to disappear from right in front of them. Erin, on the other hand, honestly didn't care. She could handle Voight. All she wanted was for Jay to be honest with himself and her. She could tell he had more to say, and her silence was going to force it out of him. His hand pressed against his forehead. Erin was being stubborn. He posed a question and she wasn't answering it. Jay adjusted himself in the passenger seat, and turned to face her completely, "Do you want me to give you a reason not to go?" She slowly turned to face him, as a result, he leaned forward, cupped her face in his hands and pressed his lips against hers, "That's a reason for you not to go," He pulled away.
Her eyebrows furrowed, "Because you kissed me?"
"Because I kissed you," he nods, answering her question, "And I would kiss you again."
"Technically that's a reason why I should go."
Halstead sighed and relaxed into his seat. His eye brows creased together as he stared at her in confusion. She was being extremely difficult, and it is at this point that he realizes fully just how perplexing women really are. Before this moment, he's never really given it much thought, because he didn't want to, but with Erin, he wanted…needed to understand her.
"Oh sorry," she shakes her head, "Continue…I'm," she hesitates over her choice of words, "I actually like where this conversation is going."
He reaches out for her hand, "Truth?"
"Please," she sighs.
"I don't want you to go."
Without realizing it, her head slowly nods. She was speechless. Erin wanted Jay to tell her the truth in his feelings, but she didn't know how she was going to react. Lindsey felt well-prepared for whatever his response was going to be, but actually hearing the words come out was different. Her breath caught in her throat as he continued, "I don't want a different partner. And if it's selfish, I don't care because I prefer my best friend over any and everyone else."
"I don't think it's selfish," she reaches over the armrest and takes his hand in hers.
"Good," he nodded, more to assure himself than her, "because I held my tongue back when you first told me because I didn't want to hold you back." His fingers casually brush over her knuckles, "Obviously, you're destined for greatness, but I prefer to be by your side and have your back when you reach your true potential." The partners stared forward at the red door and relaxed at the sight of nothing happening.
Jay felt his shoulders stiffen when her hand slides out of his hold. At the loss of contact, he felt wrong. He knew he shouldn't have said anything. He should have just kept his mouth closed like he was doing, but before he could completely drop the subject, he needed to know where she stood, "What are you thinking?"
"I want to take it," she nods her head positively.
Halstead looked defeated. His lips pursed in bewilderment. She wanted to take the job. She wanted to leave the Intelligence Unit and work in the task force. He wasn't going to see her every day. They weren't going to spend every hour together. Everything he's said was for nothing. She was still leaving.
"I still might take the job." She elaborated and annunciated the 'take.' The best friend and partner in him wanted to congratulate her. He wanted to give her a pat on the back, help her pack her desk, and give her a key to his place so she could stop pass anytime she wanted to gossip about her new co-workers. He didn't want her to feel guilty for wanting what's best for her. If anyone deserved this opportunity, it was Lindsey. She licked her lips, before finishing her thought, "But at the same time, I want to stay. I don't want to start all over and get to know everyone. I don't want a new boss, a new wardrobe and a new workplace." She brushes strands of hair behind her ear, and gives him a small smile, "And I especially do not want another partner."
"Then stay!" He exclaimed, setting his hand against her thigh, "…at Intelligence," he could tell she was forcing eye contact on the suspect's red front door, "with me." His voice grew low at the admittance.
"Halstead, I care about you…A LOT." She confessed, lifting his weighted hand up into her own.
He gives her a weak grin, "The feeling is mutual."
"And even if I take the job, it doesn't mean we won't see each other as often or it'll make you less of my partner and best friend!"
It was his turn to pull his hand out of hers, "Erin, that's exactly what it means." Her words sounded convincing, but she spoke them as if she was struggling to convince herself…not him.
"We won't allow it." She asserted, confidently, refusing for him to reject it, "I won't allow it."
Jay took this opportunity to give her a once over. He could read Erin like an opened book. Her hands were fidgeting in her lap, her eyes were averting around the car and she kept clearing her throat. Halstead knew exactly what that meant. He swallowed his doubts, and spoke up, "Are you going to take the job?"
"I think I am," she backs it up with the shake of her head.
"You see," a genuine smile appears on his face, "I know you better than you know yourself. I knew you already had your mind made up."
Something tugs at her lips, and forces a smile upon her face. He was right. He knew from the beginning of their conversation. Everything he's said, and done was said and done because he knew her. It never failed to amaze her just how much her partner knew her. From her childhood with Voight, Camille and Bunny to her life after Charlie and joining the police force, he knew about it and he never looked at her any differently.
Without giving it much thought, Erin and Jay took another hold of each other's hands. Neither one had any thought of letting go. He was happy for her and she knew it. They wouldn't allow this new job to get in between of whatever relationship they may or may not pursue.
"They're lucky to have you," he gives her a side wink, "and if they give you any trouble, I'm pretty sure you don't need me to put them in their place, but if you do however want my services, you know where to find me."
His kind words touched her. He was such a good friend and partner. The task force was lucky to have her? No. Whoever became his partner after her was the lucky one. They had the luxury of seeing Jay every day. They were going to have the pleasure of riding around with him and watching his back…and if his new partner failed in any of that, they were going to have to answer to her.
She wraps both of her hands around his large one, "Why are you such a great person?"
"Because you bring it out of me…" he nudges her shoulder gently, "and despite everything I said earlier just know that I am truly proud of you and you deserve the best. The task force just does not know how lucky they are to get Detective Lindsey."
She takes his words in, and appreciates everything he's just said. His eyes watch her as she admires their intertwined hands, "Jay," she presses a kiss to his knuckle before turning to face him, "Promise me this job change won't ruin our relationship."
"I promise," he assures.
Erin finds comfort in that. He would never break his promise. Her shoulders relaxed and the worries in her head disappeared. In her peripheral, she could still see him staring at her in passion and intrigue, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
He uses his other hand to turn her to face him, "Do you realize how much I want to kiss you right now."
"…then kiss me."
