Chapter 36:
Liam Dunbar
Audrey was all he could think about. He couldn't focus during anything; his classes, at home, with his friends, around Mason... nowhere. Even as he is eating lunch, well not really, he just blanks out into space.
"Hey, can I borrow your notes for English?" He heard Mason ask.
"Huh?" Liam muttered.
"The notes... We have a test coming up next!" Mason said.
"Oh, uh, yeah! Sure," Liam then pulled out his notebook and opened it up, "Here."
Before handing the notebook, he glossed over the pages and froze. He read it over, but couldn't read anything but one word. Audrey. It was scribbled all over the page. He then flipped it over and began panicking.
"Hey, are you okay?" Mason asked.
"What? Uh– "
"Eh, forget it. I'll just bs this test." Mason chewed on his food and shrugged, "Wanna work out at the gym later to prepare for the game?"
Liam took deep breaths to slow his fast heart rate. Finally, he nodded.
Derek Hale
Derek opened the door and entered as gracefully as he could, even though Audrey was still in a coma. He sat down on the chair beside her and knotted his hands together, sighing before he began to speak.
"Hey, Audrey... It's Derek." He began. Silence replied to him. Thus, he continued to talk, "Liam's lacrosse game is coming soon, and also I can't go home because Scott planned a date with Kira in my loft. Crazy kids. They remind me of us."
There was still nothing, so Derek added on, "I miss you, Audrey. I miss the old you and the you now. Anyways, moving on, Stiles and Malia made up– "
"What?"
Derek froze and turned his head at Audrey. Did she just talk? He asked himself in his head. "Audrey?" He called out softly.
"Derek?" Audrey asked croakily, fluttering her eyes open. She clenched her fists to feel some movement and got up slowly. Soon enough, Derek could tell that she ached as she fell back down onto the bed.
"Stay here, I'm calling a nurse!" Derek said before running out to find the nearest nurse he could find. Soon enough, the doctor and nurses surrounded Audrey and did some tests on her to make sure she was okay, and she was. Later on, a nurse asked Derek to wheel her around for some fresh air and he immediately obliged to it. He wheeled her to the cafeteria.
After settling on what was on the menu, Derek watched Audrey closely, making sure she ate. But instead, she just played around with her food.
"For someone who just came out of a coma, you're not that hungry." Derek commented.
Audrey shrugged, "I'm not hungry."
Derek nodded and thought of an idea in his head. He concluded, "Okay. Well then, I'm going to take you somewhere else."
"Where?" Audrey asked.
"You'll see," Derek said as he began packing the food in to-go containers, "Take your fruit at least."
Audrey rolled her eyes and chuckled, "Yes, Dad."
Derek strolled Audrey outside of the cafeteria to some place far more beautiful than around the inside of the hospital– the gardens. Luckily, there were ducks in the small pond, swimming. Derek and Audrey snacked on the fruit as they watched them do their thing.
"So, what was it like being in a coma?" Derek asked, hoping to make the mood light.
Audrey began to smile to the distance. She hid it with a grin and looked down, "For me, time actually didn't stop. It just kept going."
"Elaborate?"
Audrey sighed and began, "While I was in that coma, I discovered something, I discovered someone. Me. Derek, I found out about my past. How my dad was really my dad, not Chris, but also who Amber was in the past, and Jance! They were all different people from different strands of time. I also found out who you were, and who you were to me."
Derek gulped and paused for a minute, processing everything to his mind. So she knows everything? He didn't need to hide anymore.
"Derek, you know we still can't go back together." She said.
He nodded, disappointed but not surprised. This, apparently, had been his fate with her.
"Maybe someday, though," she added for reassurance, "only if you can wait for me."
Derek grinned a sad grin, but managed to accept the offer. He would wait for her, and he will. But, now it's settled. Once this is all over, he will need to move on and give her space. Let her live. Let himself live. He still needed to give Braeden a chance. "Would you ever want to be audrey Lancaster again? Continued your legacy?" He asked.
Audrey thought about it for a moment but then shook her head. She said, "I want to stay as Audrey Mendler and finish this legacy for Audrey Lancaster. They're both me anyways! But, I still want to find out who created me."
Derek nodded once more, "Me too."
