No Win-Win

Janice knelt by Mem as Hyun disappeared. "I don't know if you're the bravest girl or the craziest girl I've met," she said softly.

Off to the side, Ben stirred and woke up. He sat up, looking at the card that had been placed on his chest. But then he saw Janice.

"Mom, is that really you?"

Janice turned to face her son. "Yes Ben, I'm really here. How do you feel?"

Ben shrugged then saw Mem off to Janice's side. "Mem!" He moved as quickly as he could to see her.

"Ben, don't get too close to her. She is getting changed and transformed into a cursed person. Until she regains consciousness, you can't come very close to her without getting harmed yourself."

Ben looked at his mother in annoyance. "She's in pain and you want me to stand back? And where have you been?"

Janice stood up. "I was on my way back from the war. It wasn't because I was injured like the letter said. Each Tai Chi is represented by a person. That person responds to the calls of users. I took the place of Xin, the heart character. It can also be seen as heal. Because of that, I could not fight as it would go against my training and representatives are forbidden from fighting in wars. On my way back, I ran into Mem. I was injured and while I was with her, I healed and she pretended to be someone trustworthy."

Janice shuddered. She still remembered the battle and would have killed her if she had not been a Tai Chi. "One day, Mem attacked me. I almost won the battle. I was winning but then I stopped paying attention to her as I thought I had won. Mem was unconscious, I think, and suddenly she wasn't. She sent a Tai Chi influenced rock attack straight at my head. With all the damage that it did, it should have killed me. The only reason it did not was that Tai Chi are immortal. We are not invincible but we can not be killed either."

Ben sighed. "So why didn't you come back after that?"

Janice shook her head. "The Tai Chi each have a symbol that represents their power. Mine is my wedding ring. It symbolizes that I care about my family more than anything else. The former representative of Xin came to me during the war. He knew that I wanted to return to my family. He offered me the choice to take his place which would allow me to return to you and your Dad. It was perfect, until my ring was stolen."

Janice held up her left hand to show the absence of her ring. Ben had seen it several times in the past but to now see his mom not have her ring, it made her a different person.

"If our symbol of power is stolen, we loose our ability to go between Earth and Suhn as we please among other things until we get it back. The only exception to us moving in between the two worlds is when someone calls us."

Ben shook his head. "That's not fair! Why does your ability to move between worlds depend on your symbol?"

"I don't know," Janice said in a strained voice. "I'm not the one who makes all the rules. I think, though, that it is a safety regulation. Even if we do have our symbols of power, we only spend so much time on Earth at once. If I wanted to be with you and your Dad all the time or as close to all the time as I could get, you two would have to move to Suhn. You and your Dad are mixed species which makes it unsafe for you here because of the rules made. There isn't a win-win solution to this. I wish there were but it can't be that way."

Ben sighed. Unexpectedly another sigh caught his attention. Mem opened her eyes and sat up.

"Mem!"

(So yah, this was supposed to be one of the endings but this little section would have been the same for both. I wasn't interested in copying this and making you guys read it twice.

Plasma57, Mem and Mishka are siblings. Hyun isn't related to them at all. And just for the record, Mem is a girl.

Cyborg, you kind of lost me with the part of your review that mentioned Rai. But on the note of your review... What Hyun was referring to was when Luva used Xin to free Ave from the influence of Hyun in episode...20? Janice represents Xin so of course Hyun, being the evil brat that he is, would blame her for losing him his control over someone.)
