Chapter 36: This is my Stop
"And is that where the monsters go?"
-The Doctor
"Okay." Rose nodded, "Now we just need a way out. Zach, Mr Jefferson, you start working on that." She walked over to the man still looking around with wide eyes, "Toby, what about you?"
Toby slowly got to his feet, "I'm not a solider. I can't do anything."
"No, you're the archaeologist. What do you know about the pit?"
Toby shook his head, "Well, n-n-n-nothing. We can't even translate the language."
Rose turned away, "Right."
"H-hold on." Toby paused, "Maybe"
Amy came up closer, "Toby?"
Toby twitched, "Since that things was inside my head, it's like the letters made more sense."
"Must've left something behind." Amy noted with a hidden humor.
Rose looked at him, "Well...get to work. Anything you can translate, just...anything. Amy just...stay with him for now."
Amy raised an eyebrow at the command, "Sure."
Rose nodded and then turned to Danny, "As for you, Danny-boy - you're in charge of the Ood - any way of stopping them?"
"Well...I don't know." He didn't sound particularly thrilled about the idea.
Rose yanked him to the computer, "Then find out. The sooner we get control of the babe, the sooner we can get the Doctor out. Shift." She smacked his playfully, then turned to the pit.
Toby looked at the writing which they could read easily, pretending to work.
"We have a problem."Toby whispered.
Amy nodded, "I noticed."
"The Doctor has decided to descend into the pit.."
Amy faltered, "Alright, not exactly what I was talking about."
He grinned at her, bringing up a hand to brush her face tenderly.
She chuckled, "Bit narcissistic aren't we?"
He laughed outright at that, looking down, "Only the Doctor is going down. Ida will die when her air runs out. But the Doctor..."
"The oxygen cushion." Amy sighed.
Toby nodded, "One of us will need to go down there and deal with him."
Amy faltered, "I will." Toby looked ready to argue but she shook her head, "Your body is stronger than this one. I won't be able to take in the entire conscious. This body will die in the pit along with the Doctor."
Jefferson worked quickly at the computer, "Open junctions five...six...seven..." A bang echoed on the door, "...reroute filters sixteen to twenty-four. Go."
"There's all sorts of viruses that could stop the Ood. Trouble is, we haven't got them on board." Danny frowned.
Rose leaned up against the computer net to him, arms crossed, "Well, that's handy, listing all the things we haven't got. We haven't got a swimming pool either. Or a Tescos."
The computer beeped and Rose looked down to see the word 'Affirmative' flash.
Danny perked up, "Oh my God. It says yes! I can do it! Hypothetically, if you flip the monitor, broadcast a flare...it can disrupt the telepathy Brainstorm!"
Rose felt nervous, "What happens to the Ood?"
"It'll tank them, spark out!"
Rose grinned, "There we are, then! Do it!"
Danny continued to read and his face fell, "No but..." He shook his head, "I'd have transmit from the central monitor. We need to go to Ood Habitation."
The door bang and sparks flew.
"We don't have that kind of time." Amy hissed from her spot on the floor with Toby.
Rose sighed, "Well it'll have to do." She grumbled, "Mr. Jefferson, sir! Any way out?"
"Just about...there's a network of maintenance tunnels running underneath the base. We should be able to gain access from here."
"Ventilation shafts." Rose grinned, not noticing the grim look Amy was sending.
"Yeah, I appreciate the reference." Jefferson muttered, "But there's no ventilation. No air, in fact - at all. They were designed for machines, not life forms."
Another bang at the door.
"But - I can manipulate the oxygen field from here. Create discrete pockets of atmosphere...if I control it manually...I can follow you through the network."
"Right." Rose continued, 'So we go down, and you make the air follow us. By hand."
"You wanted me pressing buttons."
Rose smiled, "Yeah - I asked for it - okay, we need to get to Ood Habitation, work out a route."
Another bang at the door made Rose nervous.
"They're getting through." Amy said, sounding far to calm for Rose's liking.
"Danny!" Roe shouted.
"Hold on!" He yelled, "Just conforming..."
"Dan, you gotta go now!" Jefferson tried to stay calm, "Come on!"
The computer beep and Danny cheered, reaching down to grab an orange computer chip and showed it to them triumphantly. He ran over to the entrance to the tunnels, "Put that in the monitor...and it's a bad time to be an Ood!"
"We're coming back." Rose said sternly, "Have you got that? We're coming back to this room and we're getting the Doctor out."
Everybody nodded but Rose could tell they were just humoring her. But there was no way he was staying here. He would hate dying down there in that pit, unable to see the stars.
"Okay," Jefferson nodded, "Danny, you go first, then you Miss Tyler-"
"No." Rose shook her head, "I'll go last. Amy's gonna need help."
"I can help her." Toby insisted.
Rose shook her head, "No, she's my friend. I'll help her."
She didn't want to say it out loud, but she wanted to keep an eye on Amy. Something was incredibly wrong about her, and after seeing what had happened to Toby...
Jefferson looked nervous, but nodded, "Alright. Then Toby, then me. Miss Tyler, you follow, and Mrs Williams can take up the rear."
They all popped into the tunnels in that order. Rose dropped in, and helped Amy down until they were settled.
"Nasty." Amy grumbled.
Rose wrinkled her nose, "I noticed."
"Yeah, I'm laughing." Danny snorted.
"Just go straight ahead. Keep going 'til I say so." Zach ordered.
Above them the door slammed open and the Ood got through. Rose reached up and slammed the door shut.
They crawled as quickly as they could down the shafts. Rose looked down at her knees and winced, knowing that were going to be bruised to all hell later. Amy was crawling behind her, keeping up. Her breaths were normal and even, unlike the shallow panting of everyone else.
"Straight along until you find junction 7.1. Keep breathing. I'm feeding you air. I've got you."
They stopped crawling once they'd reached the hatch. Jefferson raised his wrist, "We're at 7.1, sir."
"Okay I've got you...I'm just aerating the next section."
"Getting kinda cramped, sir...can't you hurry up?" Danny grumbled.
"I'm working on half power, here."
"Stop complaining."Jefferson snapped.
Toby raised his own wrist device, "But the air's getting a bit thin..."
"I'm just moving the air. I've got the oxygenate the next section. Now keep calm...or it's gonna feel worse."
A loud bang echoed through the tunnel and Amy twisted her entire body, "Er- I hate to rush you..."
"Captain...what was that?"
"The junction in Habitation Five's been opened - it must be the Ood."
Amy turned, "I can hear them."
"They're in the tunnels!"
"We can hear that!" Jefferson warned, "Mrs. Williams!"
Rose ducked as Jefferson tossed Amy a weapon. Amy grabbed it and twisted around, aiming the gun towards the Oods.
"Open the gate!" Amy shouted.
"I've gotta get the air in!"
"Just open it!" Danny shouted, then faltered, "...Sir."
"Where are they?" Rose turned, asking Amy. "Are they close?"
"I can't see them yet." Amy answered, "The sound, it's echoing I can't tell how far away they are."
"Me neither." Zach answered, "The computer doesn't register Ood as proper life forms."
"Well you should complain about that when you get home." Amy hissed.
"Open the gate!" Danny roared into the wrist, panicking."
In front of him the gate opened and they lunged threw it into the other side. Amy twisted, throwing the gun on her back as she crawled.
"Danny, turn left. Immediate left."
Amy was all but crawling backwards, gun pointed towards the direction the Ood were coming from.
"Cut them off!" Amy shouted.
Jefferson raised his wrist device, "Sir, can you trap the Ood? Cut off the air?"
"Not without cutting off yours. Danny, turn right. Go right! Go fast, Dan - they're gonna catch up!"
"Mrs. Williams." Jefferson said calmly. "Give me the gun, I'll maintain defence of position."
Rose looked at him in horror, "You can't stop."
He crawled around Rose and took the gun from Amy, moving around her, "Miss Tyler - that's my job. You've got your task - now see to it."
"Rose, go!" Amy yelled. Toby grabbed Rose and pulled her forward, leaving Jefferson behind.
They continued on their way and Rose flinched when she heard the sound of gunfire behind them.
Finally they reached the door, "8.2, Open 8.2. Zach!" Danny shouted in his wrist device.
"I've gotta aerate it!"
"OPEN IT NOW!"
"I'M TRYING!"
Danny kicked and thumped at the door furiously.
"Danny stop it!" Rose cried, "That's not helping.
Toby sucked in a breath, "Zach, get it open!"
But Zach ignored them, "Jefferson...I've gotta open 8.2 by closing 8.1. You've GOT to get past the junction, now MOVE. That's an order, now MOVE!"
There was no answer from the man, just the sound of bullet's echoing through the tunnels.
"I'm gonna lose oxygen, Jefferson, I can' stop for your dramatics!"
In front of them the door to 8.2 opened and they hurriedly crawled through to the other side.
"Come on!" Danny cried.
Rose turned to look down the corridor, trying to see if Jefferson was coming, but Amy pushed her through, that strange protectiveness for the girl rearing its ugly head.
"Danny, turn left and head for 9.2. That's the last one. Jefferson-"
Amy paused, looking up. This was her stop.
Amy stopped right below a grate that lead upwards.
"Amy." Rose turned as the others ran, "Come on."
"Sorry Rose." Amy smirked as the grate above her swung open by itself, "This is my stop."
Then with one powerful jump she leapt out of the tunnel and back into the base.
"AMY!"
Finally Amy let out a shuddering breath and watched as the inky blackness leapt to her skin, forming the dark language. Cracking her neck her eyes flashed red.
Rose sat underneath the open grate and looked up at her in horror.
"Amy..." She whispered, her eyes welling up with tears.
Amy leaned down, looking down at the Blond girl, "Sorry Rose, I'd love to help but I've got a much bigger fish to fry."
And she waved her hand slamming the opening down on Rose's face.
Rose grabbed at the opening, trying to throw it open. Her eyes welled up with tears, "No! Amy!"
Toby ran over and grabbed her, "We have to go!"
"No!" Rose snapped, "I can't leave her!"
"She's already gone." Toby told her quietly before pushing her down the hall, "And we'll die if we don't leave."
"What's happening?!" Zach's voice came through the speaker.
Danny looked at Rose's tear soaked face and lifted the device, "It's Amy, sir. She's been...compromised"
"Leave her! You need to get out of there, NOW."
Being half pulled along by Toby, Rose stumbled along the tunnel.
"Mr. Jefferson come on!" Rose called back, her voice thick.
Toby pushed her forward, "KEEP GOING!"
They crawled further down the tunnels.
"Regret to inform, sir...I was a bit slow. Not so fast, these days."
Rose felt her heart skip a beat as she recognized Jefferson's voice coming though the device. They didn't stop, still crawling through the tunnels.
"There's nothing I can do, John. I'm sorry..."
"You've done enough, sir. Made a very good captain under the circumstances."
Rose let out a strangled sob. This whole trip had been a disaster from the start. So many deaths, losing the Doctor and Amy... she didn't even want to think about what would happen to her if she ever got off this god forsaken planet.
"I ask, if you can't ass oxygen to this section...can you speed up the process of its removal."
"I don't understand. What do you mean?"
"Well...if I might choose the manner of my departure, sir...lack of air seems more natural than...well...let's say...death by Ood. I'd appreciate it, sir."
"God speed, Mr. Jefferson."
"Thank you, sir."
After a few minutes of agonizing silence Zach's shaky voice came through the wrist device.
"Report...Officer John Maynard Jefferson PKD...deceased...with honors...43K2.1"
A/N: Wow Another update so soon! I know I figured you guys deserved it for putting up with my longer update times. This chapter is pretty short, so I could get it up faster.
HAPPY 500 REVIEWS EVERYONE. I think it's time for a party! Shout out to Opalalchemy for being my 500th reviewer! Partytime.
I did promise you guys a sneak peak! But I'm definitely not saying which episode it's from.
Here we go!
"Amelia!" He growled, "Let's not be difficult!"
"I thought you said you'd heard a lot about me!" She shouted back as she ran. But it was getting harder and harder. The air was thin, and getting thinner. She gasped for breath and was already starting to feel light-headed. "I'm always difficult."
"I'll put that in my notes." She heard him grumble and she actually felt a grin spread over her face.
She rushed even higher, until she ran out of stairs, pushing out until she found herself on the roof.
"Great." She grumbled, turning around.
He stood at the door, pointing the stunner at her, "Didn't think that one out, did you?"
"Yeah..."Amy tried to buy some time, "So quick to shoot, don't you wanna buy me dinner first?" She said with raised eyebrow.
He rolled his eyes, "Look, you're running out of time. The air is low, so you can either come with me now, or I can wait until you fall unconscious and take you then?"
"Kinky." Amy smirked.
Mwhahahah. There's your special sneak peak! Thank you guys so much for the reviews! I can't believe we hit 500 I never even imagined that when I started writing this series. You are all so incredibly wonderful.
So keep up the good work and review with any comments, questions or concerns!
