Rory felt only damp soil when he jumped around in the empty grave. Nothing too out of place. Maybe The Doctor isn't always right, he thought.
"Do you want sugar?" Elliot asked, seeming to have appeared out of nowhere. "Sorry?" Rory said, startled. "In your tea. Mum's asking," Elliot clarified. "No, just white, thanks," Rory ordered. Elliot didn't leave, though. "There's only one explanation, as far as I can see," he said. "And what's that, then?" Rory asked awkwardly.
"The graves eat people. Devour them whole, leaving no trace," Elliot explained. "Not sure about that," Rory tried to say without hurting his feelings. "It didn't steal the body from above it couldn't have got it from the sides. Only other thing is, to get in from underneath," Elliot reasoned. "Not very likely, though," Rory denied.
" 'When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.' " Responding to Rory's confusion, Elliot said, "Sherlock Holmes. I got the audiobook.
"The graves 'round you eat people," Elliot finished, and after a long pause, he walked away. Rory shuddered.
"Is that what happened to Mo? Are they dead?" Mac asked The Doctor. "It's not quicksand," The Doctor mused. "It didn't just sink! Something pulled her in, it wanted her."
Nasreen thought this man was nuts. "The ground wanted her?" she asked, aghast. The Doctor continued while pacing around the room. "You said the ground was dormant, just a patch of Earth when you saw it this morning. And the drill had been stopped!" He wheeled around to face Mac. "That's right," the old man said gruffly.
"But when you restarted the drill, the ground fought back," the Doctor said, glancing in concern over at Rose, who was still on the floor, groaning.
"So, what, the ground wants to stop us drilling? Doctor, that is ridiculous," Nasreen stated resolutely. The Doctor began scanning the ground with his sonic, and the dirt gave out a long, low rumble. "I'm not saying it's not ridiculous, I just don't think it's right... Ohhhh, of course! Bioprogramming!"
Rose sat up. "Bioprogramming? What about it?"
"Don't steal my thunder, Wolf! Now, we can stop the drill, get Amy back, the only thing is, the drill is bio programmed to attack! Have I gone mad?"
"That's not a new thing," Rose quipped, but the Doctor completely ignored her. "Shh! Shh! Silence! Absolute silence!
"You stopped the drill, right?" the Doctor asked. "Yes," Nasreen answered. "And you've only got the one drill?"
"Don't ask stupid questions, of course they do!" Rose said as she stalked over to the computer, remembering all of his passive lying. "But it hasn't stopped, has it? I could still hear the rumbling when I woke up just now."
Rose swept her sonic pen over the computer, but nobody said anything. They saw how irritated she was.
"Alright, let's see... 21.009 kilometers! Nice work!" Rose said, looking at Nasreen.
"Thank you, it's taken us a long time," she replied, a glint in her eyes.
"Why did you drill here, though? Why on this site?" the Doctor asked.
"Well, we found patches of grass containing trace minerals unseen in this country for 20 million years!" Nasreen answered, looking to Mac for support.
"The blue grass? Oh, Nasreen..." The Doctor clapped his hand on her shoulder like a parent reprimanding a child. "Those trace minerals weren't X marking the spot, saying dig here; they were a warning, 'stay away'! 'Cause while you've been drilling down..."
"They've been drilling up!" said Rose, wide-eyed.
The Doctor looked back to the computer. He widened the scanning area. "Oh... Beautiful. Network of tunnels all the way down."
"No, no, we've surveyed that area," Mac said, pointing to the screens.
"You only saw what you went looking for," The Doctor corrected.
"I only wish everyone could be that ignorant," Rose said, partially to herself.
"Wait, what are they?" Nasreen asked, pointing to three blinking red dots in a vertical line. "Heat signals, wait... Dual readings, hot and cold..."
Rose edged forward again and read the records on her sonic. "Grab this equipment, because the signals are moving fast! We have about 12 minutes before God-knows-what comes up, so no time to argue- and no crap from you, The Doctor," Rose rattled off as she carried one of the computers out the door.
"Someone has Molly O'Sullivan syndrome," The Doctor sulked as he followed her.
