"What do you want?! Whatever it is, I can get it!" Jane practically yelled into the receiver. She wasn't a detective right now; right now she was a person frantically pleading for the life of her partner.
"Now now, what fun would that be?" The mysterious voice on the other side answered her.
Jane could hear the sneer in his voice; it made her insides boil. She tried to keep her voice steady, even though her heart was about to pound out of her chest. "Listen to me, you son of a bitch. I don't know who you are, or what you want, but I can tell you one thing: you're not going to get away with this, do you hear me? I don't care if I have to look for you under a grain of sand, I WILL find you and I WILL make you pay for doing what you've done. If you even think about laying a finger on Maura, I swear to God, you will not live to see another da-."
"JANE! Anesthesi-"
Jane heard a hard hit being delivered and Maura yelling out in pain before the line went dead.
"Maura?! Maura! Can you hear me?! MAURA!"
She turned to look at her partner with frantic eyes before turning and running back towards the building.
"Jane! Hold on! What's going on?" Frost ran beside her as they entered the hospital once more and headed to the emergency room.
"It was her, I heard her. Maura was trying to tell me something right before the line went dead. He hit her, Frost!"
Frost didn't bother with a comment knowing full well that it would be in vain. "What was she trying to tell you?" he inquired.
"She started saying "anesthe" before the line cut off."
"Anesthe as in anesthesia?" Frost questioned.
"I'm thinking it was as in "anesthesiologist", Jane replied as they finally reached the nurses station.
"Excuse me," Jane said as she showed her badge once more. "Boston PD, we were here earlier about the two doctors being who were attacked. I need to see your anesthesiologists."
"My apologies, detective. The anesthesiologists we have on the clock right now are in surgery."
"Do you know if there have been any recent changes in that department?" Jane questioned.
"Yes, I believe there's been a change." The nurse turned to a doctor walking by. "Dr. Brock?" The doctor turned his attention to the nurse. "Boston PD is asking questions about the anesthesiology department, I thought you'd be better informed to offer any help." The doctor in question turned his attention to Jane and Frost.
"How can I help you?" He asked.
"Your nurse was telling us there's been a change in the anesthesiology department recently? It may be of use in a current investigation concerning the attack that occurred in the surgical floor this afternoon," Jane questioned.
"Yes, as a matter of fact there has been. One of our doctors announced his upcoming retirement a couple of months ago. Two weeks ago approximately, a new anesthesiologist came in to replace him. He's been excellent during my surgeries."
"Can you give me a name? A description?"
"Dr. Yost. Tall, Caucasian, lean but muscular, brown eyes, brown hair."
"Is there a way we can get a hold of his employee file?" Jane asked.
"I'm sure that can be obtained through the chief of surgery. I'll have him paged to his office so that he can see you there. It's located on the 5th floor, left wing past the catwalk."
"Thank you, doctor." Jane replied gratefully as saw the man go up to the nurse from before to have the chief of surgery paged.
She and Frost quickly made their way to the fifth floor and to the chief of surgery's office. They only had to wait another minute or so before the older man came up to them.
"Detectives, I'm told you need my assistance with one of my staff members?" he asked as he opened his office door and led them all inside.
"Yes doctor, we need information on a Dr. Yost. From what I'm told, he was hired by the hospital very recently. We have reason to believe he was involved with the attack that occurred today. We need a copy of his personnel file," Jane stated, keeping her tone neutral.
The older man scanned through documents on his computer. "Dr. Yost was due to work with Dr. Isles and Dr. Chang in surgery today. I've just paged him '911' but from what you're telling me, I doubt that will do any good. Typically we demand a warrant for such a request. Due to the severity of what has happened today, I'll allow it. Give me a minute and I'll get you the information you need."
"Thank you doctor," both detectives replied.
"We are still wanting to talk to Susie, I'm sorry, to Dr. Chang whenever she is able. She may have something on Dr. Isles' disappearance," Frost piped in.
"Dr. Chang is going to be under a medically induced coma for at least 2 to 3 more days," the chief replied. "Rest assured detectives, we will cooperate in whichever way is possible." He handed Jane a stack of papers. "Here are the documents you are requesting. Should you need additional assistance, here is my direct number and my pager number."
"Thank you again, doctor. Here is my card if anything else turns up," Jane said as she handed him one of her cards. "We need to get back to the station so we can try to use this information to track his whereabouts."
As Jane and Frost headed out of the hospital and back to the car, she scanned through the files given to her by the older doctor.
"I know that this will probably not amount to much, but we have to go take a look at the address on file. It may help give us an idea as to where this son of a bitch is hiding Maura. Frost, go ahead and send the man's name, address, and photo over to the station and see if anything comes up. The fingerprint on file may be a fake, but send that too. I'll call for backup. Let's head over to Dorchester. We have to move and we have to move now; Maura's life depends on it."
