Two days later they felt none the wiser, it was hard to investigate when they were permanently surrounded by the people they were investigating. So far they'd managed to rule out all of the administrative staff and cleaners - meaning Gina was in the clear which was a relief to Jake. He loved Gina but she didn't half have a big mouth. Sometimes he felt he'd spent half of his life getting her out of problems her speak first think later attitude had caused.
Setting his stuff down on his desk he moved to the evidence locker. Amy was already set up next to the doorway, ready to distract anyone who tried to enter. As he moved forward, however, Holt called from his office.
"Peralta. Santiago. A moment."
Amy looked at him significantly as she moved over, not exactly looking inconspicuous.
"Close the door behind you."
Jake sat down while Amy hovered uncomfortably beside the closed door.
"What case are you both working?"
"Homicide, sir." Amy quickly answered. "Robbery gone bad, we have some surveillance footage to go over..."
"No. Your other case." Holt interrupted.
"We're not working any other cases." Jake answered.
"Santiago." Holt said and Jake internally cursed already knowing which card he was going to play. "I'm very disappointed with your answer Santiago, I thought you were a good detective."
"I am a good detective sir." She replied stiffly.
"Then why are you lying to your superior officer?"
"I'm not lying sir."
"I've seen you both sneaking around the precinct. You're up to something. It troubles me."
Jake raised his hand to stop Amy before she went on one of her super rants and gave the game away. "Look cap, the only thing going on is a little hanky panky, nothing major though, pinkie promise."
"J-ake." Amy hissed.
"I know you are lying Detective Peralta."
"I swear that's all that is happening sir."
Holt sank back into his chair and evaluated them both. "Very well."
Amy opened the door and Jake rose to leave.
"I'm suspending you both."
Amy slammed the door shut and wheeled to face Holt. "What? No captain you can't."
"Peralta's admission means you both have violated numerous precinct policies for which I will have to suspend you. Unless of course you would like to change your story?"
Jake looked into Amy's pleading eyes and sighed. He wouldn't mind but she was the one who wanted to keep it a secret in the first place!
"Fine."
They both sat down.
"First of all sir I want to say that I never wanted to lie to you." Amy started. "It just seemed necessary."
"Plus it wasn't exactly our idea." Jake mumbled.
"I don't really know where to start but..."
"How about Bryce isn't dead."
"Excuse me." Holt said his voice amazingly still monotone.
"Amy's ex-partner, ex-boyfriend whatever, isn't dead. It was staged."
"How?"
"They used a cadaver. Bryce is working undercover to find the corrupt cops who helped Lawall and his gang."
"When did you come across this information."
"Four days ago." Amy said. "He came to my apartment one night. Bryce has been investigating this for a while and narrowed down the corruption to three precincts. My brothers are at the other two and the other is the 99."
"And what evidence does he have to support this?"
"He traced some calls from Lawall, paperwork that seems to have been tampered with..." Jake started listing.
"They all happened at the precincts we're investigating."
"You said your brothers were involved somehow?"
"Christopher."
"The fifth one." Jake said smugly, recently having gone to great lengths to learn about Amy's brothers in order to score brownie points with her. And to show that he cared greatly about her family of course.
"And Tomas."
"The youngest. He's terrifying. They all are."
"He's lovely."
"Mmm hmm."
"I see and their role in this is..."
"Tomas already works in one precinct and Chris is getting a transfer to the other."
"And they're trustworthy?"
Amy looked mortally offended.
"No sir." Jake answered. "In fact I think they both may be trying to kill me."
Amy elbowed him making him squeak and cower to the side of his chair.
"They are sir. They'll do anything they can to try and find this leak."
"Alright. Well we'll all stay after hours, I can give you access to records."
Jake breathed a sigh of relief. Having the captain in the know made all of this so much easier. He told Amy they should have told him! He would have to make sure to bring it up later just to hear her say those words - 'I know, you were right'. Score!
"Thank you sir." Amy stood and they both made to leave knowing it was going to be a long day.
Amy took a call during their lunch break from Chris to say he was following up some leads, apparently someone called Frank Kerouac was on a lot of the suspicious cases Bryce had flagged. He said Tomas was also suspicious of two guys at his precinct, one was an administrator Max McCall and the other was a cop, Alexander Brooks. That meant Jake and Amy were the only ones who hadn't turned up anything. They couldn't even make a move on the three guys unless they warned whoever the mole at the 99 was.
Filling the captain in, Holt let them into the records room after they made sure everyone had left. Amy and Jake were pretending to be hard at work on their homicide though Jake had managed to solve it pretty quickly after noticing a stain on the brothers dress.
"Do we know what we're looking for?" Holt asked.
"I'm gonna find the case files Bryce mentioned while Amy goes through records to see if any of our staff has ties to Frank Kerouac, Max McCall and Alexander Brooks." Jake whispered theatrically.
"Peralta there is no one in the building."
Amy left the room to go back to her computer.
"So." Jake started. "Bryce isn't dead. Bet that's a surprise for you huh?"
"If you are attempting to ask me to help you deal with your emotional crisis I suggest you refrain from doing so. It is urgent we find the mole before they become suspicious."
"O-kay. You're right. Although..." Jake nodded and turned to the files.
"Peralta."
They both went through the files in silence.
"Here. I have one of the case files, it was signed off by..." He flipped through the pages, "Boyle." Jake scoffed. "Well he's not the mole."
"Nevertheless we must add the file to our investigations."
"He can't keep a secret about anything. You wouldn't believe what he told me the other day about when he was watching this documentary about bees..."
"Peralta focus. I have another one of the case files. Signed off by Diaz."
They were able to find all nine of the flagged files, all signed by Boyle, Diaz, Scully and two guys from the weekend crew; Hank Miller and Mike McMahon.
"Well it's gotta be Miller and McMahon." Jake said.
"Why?"
"Because Boyle can't lie, Scully is dumb and Rosa was in training with me, she's a good cop."
"You can't rule out your friends Peralta, we need to remain impartial."
"Hey." Amy said. "I found a connection to Frank Kerouac."
"What is it?" Jake asked moving to her side. She looked tense.
"He used to go out with Rosa."
"What? That was in the files?"
"No, but I hadn't seen what he looked like until I read his file and I remember seeing the two of them at the bar once."
"Good work Santiago, we've found the files so we'll help you with the records."
"Yes sir."
In the end they were able to find a link between the five suspects from the 99 and the other three suspects. Amy had dug out a picture with Rosa, Charles and Frank Kerouac at the bar. Scully and Hank Miller were both old drinking buddies with Max McCall. Mike McMahon used to train with Alexander Brooks.
"It's a start Jake." Amy whispered to him that night as they lay in bed unable to sleep. "Now we just have to keep going to help clear them, okay."
"I know."
"It'll work out."
Another thought was playing in the back of his mind. "Have you spoken to Bryce lately?"
"Not directly, Chris just keeps me updated - he's staying with him."
"Oh."
She lifted her head to look at him. "What?"
"Well, I was just thinking."
"Yeah."
"Last time he was here you said you'd move to California with him."
"Jake, you know I only said that because I thought he was dying."
"Yeah, but does he know that?"
"Well - I guess we haven't really talked about it much."
"Oh, okay."
"I'm not leaving you Jake, you know that right? I love you."
He smiled. "I love you too."
