Hey guys, I'm sorry for the delay on this chapter, but here it is! Hope you enjoy, and as always thanks for your reviews. You're great.
It had been two weeks since Arizona was injured and it had been a quiet two weeks. Callie knew in situations like beatings and attacks that the person involved may suffer from some kind of post traumatic stress and she was starting to believe that was what was wrong with Arizona. The blonde had been distant most of the time except for at night when she wouldn't let Callie leave her side. Arizona had woken up from a bad dream more then once and Callie was always there to hold her close and comfort her. Since Arizona required time off work Aria had been spending time with her at the apartment, though they didn't do much aside from silently watch movies with each other and just be in the same room.
All Callie wanted Arizona to do was open up to her, to talk to her and tell her what really happened. She was so thankful that Arizona wasn't injured more severely physically but clearly there was some emotional trauma that was making things hard for Arizona and for her. It pained her to see the woman she loved stewing in her own thoughts, she thought maybe if they talked about it, that Arizona could get pas it. But it wasn't her right to push her, if Arizona was going to talk about it she would have to do it on her own terms when she was ready.
Callie had just finished up her day at the hospital and she was headed home for the night. Arizona was returning to work the next day and Callie had been plagued with questions all day from curious staff who were anxiously awaiting the return of the beloved pediatric surgeon. All the brunette could do was nod and smile and say she was looking forward to having Arizona be back at work also.
After the quick elevator ride up to the floor their apartment was on, Callie pulled out her keys and unlocked the door and walked inside. She hung up her jacket and dropped her purse and keys on the kitchen table. She knocked on Aria's door and heard her sister say come in from the other side of the door.
"Hey," Callie said when she opened the door. Aria was laying on the bed with a book in her hands. "How's it going?"
Aria sat up and closed the book. "It's going. She was better today. We actually talked about the move we watched."
"You did?" Callie asked optimistically.
"Yeah and she smiled and laughed."
Callie leaned against the doorframe and crossed her arms. "I've missed that a lot. I-I haven't really known what to do or what to say sometimes you know? But everyone deals with things differently and I guess Arizona is just better at going through this kind of thing on her own."
"She'll talk to you Callie, she will. She just doesn't know how yet."
"I hope you're right. Where is she anyways?"
"I think she's in the shower. I heard the water turn on about 20 minutes ago."
"Okay, thanks."
Aria smiled and nodded then picked up her book and started reading again. Callie left her to go speak to Arizona. She wanted to just sneak into the shower with her but she knew that would startle her too much so she stood outside their bathroom and lightly knocked on the door.
"Yeah?" Arizona quietly replied.
"Hey, it's uh, it's me. Could I maybe join you in there?" Callie asked.
There was silence for a few seconds, like Arizona was considering her answer. "You can come in," she finally said.
Callie opened the door then quickly closed it. The shower door and glass was fogged over so she could only see an outline of Arizona. She stripped off her clothes and approached the shower. Arizona opened the door and smiled at her. Callie stepped inside and closed the door. The steam and warmth made her instantly feel good and Arizona grabbed her wrist and pulled her even closer then they already were. Arizona slid her arms around Callie's waist and rested her forehead against the other woman's.
"I missed you today," Arizona whispered.
"I missed you too. I've missed you a lot lately."
"Callie…I-"
"Shh, it's okay. You don't need to say anything." Callie cupped Arizona's face and brushed aside wet strands of hair. " I don't know what's going on in that beautiful mind of yours but I know you're dealing with something hard. I just want you to know that I'm here okay? Remember when you found me in the rain and brought me to your apartment to get warm? You told me you'd be my sounding board, someone to talk too. That's what I am for you. Always."
Arizona let out a shaky breath and closed her eyes for a moment to steady herself. She opened her eyes but looked down and spoke. "Believe me, I want to talk about it. I just…I just can't."
Callie put a finger under her chin and lifter her head to meet her gaze. "Arizona, I love you. You know that I love you. You tell me whatever you want to tell me, when you want to tell me okay?"
"Okay," Arizona replied.
"How do you feel about going back to work tomorrow?"
"I'm happy to be able to see some of the kids and to hopefully find the department in as good of a condition as I left it."
"And you're sure you're ready to go back?" Callie asked.
Arizona nodded. "I am. But I'm sure I'll be a big topic around the hospital."
"Ignore everyone except your kids and the people on your cases. Or just ignore everyone, who cares," Callie replied making Arizona laugh.
"Thank you." Arizona smiled and Callie leaned in and kissed her softly.
After kissing for a few minutes they washed each other's hair and once they started to get cold they turned off the shower and get dressed. Getting dressed at nighttime for them consisted in putting on sweatpants and loose fitting t-shirts. Neither was hungry enough for a meal so they decided to put on a movie they had seen a million times and cuddle up on the couch together. They were content to just be close with one another, Callie feeling like she maybe needed the closeness more then Arizona because of the distance between them lately. An hour into the movie Callie heard light snores coming from the blonde curled up against her side and even though it was still kind of early she figured a couple extra hours of sleep wouldn't be a bad thing, especially with Arizona going back to work the next day. Callie turned off the tv and smiled at the look of content on her fiancé's face.
"Babe," Callie said as she moved on the couch and lightly rubbed Arizona's shoulder. "Arizona, come on, let's go to bed."
"Hmm?" Arizona said sleepily as she opened her eyes and looked around.
"You fell asleep sweetie, let's head to bed."
"Mmkay."
Callie grabbed Arizona's hand and pulled her up from the couch. Most of the lights were already off so she put her arm around the blonde's waist and led them to the bedroom. Arizona quickly found her way under the covers and Callie was right behind her. She turned off the light and as soon as she had settled into the bed, Arizona instantly moved towards her and draped an arm across her torso and rested her head against Callie's shoulder.
"G'night," Arizona mumbled.
Callie kissed the top of her head and sighed. Hopefully it would be a good night, a night of uninterrupted and dreamless sleep. Arizona needed a night like that.
Four hours later, Callie woke up from being elbowed in the side by Arizona who was moving and talking in her sleep. Reaching over to the bed side table, Callie clicked on a light and then looked at Arizona. Her face was pale and covered in sweat.
"Arizona, wake up," Callie said and tried to shake the blonde out of her bad dream. "Wake up. You're okay. It's not real," Callie pleaded. Arizona finally sat up in bed, with her chest heaving and her eyes wide. Callie gently put a hand on her bag and rubbed it in slow circles. "Are you okay?" she asked.
Arizona slowly laid back down and covered her face with her hands. She hated the bad dreams. She hated that Callie had to watch her suffer because of them. It made her seem weak. He had already hurt her enough in real life and now it was happening all over again in her head, except worse. In her dreams she never made it back to Callie. In her dreams when everything faded to black, it stayed that way.
"Yeah, I'm…I'm fine," Arizona said and turned to face Callie whose looked nothing but concerned. "I'm really sorry I woke you up."
"It's fine Arizona, really." Callie slid back down under the covers and held open her arms. "Come here," she said.
Arizona did what Callie said and comfortable settled against her. Her nose nuzzled into Callie's neck and she breathed in deeply Callie's comforting scent. Callie ran her fingers lazily up and down Arizona's arm and neither said another word. Sleep quickly came over them again but when Callie woke the next morning, the space beside her in bed was empty and cold.
Callie got out of bed and pulled on jeans and a shirt to wear to work. After finishing up in the bathroom she headed into the kitchen to find it empty. Underneath a coffee mug was a note Arizona had left her.
Good morning. I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep and I figured there was no use in waking you so I decided to head to the hospital early. See you later.
- Arizona.
After grabbing her jacket and purse Callie poked her head into Aria's room to find her still passed out. She smiled then closed the door and left the apartment for the hospital. The first thing she did when she got there was get her morning dose of caffeine, she didn't want to have to wait and make it at home so she opted for a cup from the best coffee cart in the hospital. She never had time to enjoy it before being quickly paged to the ER for an emergent ortho case. A woman had been sideswiped by a car on her walk to work and had suffered a broken leg injury, which luckily wasn't severe enough for her to require surgery.
"What a way to start a morning," Callie said to one of the ER nurses once they had finished up with the patient.
"More like what a way to end a shift, I worked an overnight so I'm headed home to sleep forever now," the nurse said making Callie laugh.
"A well earned rest for you then because overnight's are the worst."
"Have a good day Dr. Torres," the nurse said and headed to the nurses lounge.
It was a busy morning at Seattle Grace and Callie never even got to leave the emergency room. Apparently everyone coming in had some sort of bone injury that needed to be looked at. They were also low on staff, which meant Callie was consulting on multiple emergent cases that weren't ortho related since she was still just a resident. She wanted to go up to the pediatrics floor to see Arizona but never got the chance. A few other residents had looked after all of the kids that had come into the ER meaning none of them required Arizona to leave her floor or the OR to come do an examination. Lunchtime rolled around and Callie dragged her tired body to the cafeteria in search of something half decent to eat. Even though she was only a few hours into her shift she was already tired and wanted nothing more then a nap in an on call room.
Callie noticed Mark Sloan sitting alone at a table eating an apple and she decided to go join him. She dropped onto a chair and rested her head in her hands on the table.
"Someone's had a busy morning," Mark said then took a bite of his apple.
She looked up at him and sighed, her shoulders slumping as she did so. "Yeah like the busiest, but I haven't even stepped foot in an OR yet today."
"Poor you."
"Gee thanks Mark, and how's your day been?"
"Great actually, thanks for asking. You know Kristen from dermatology? Well I had a nice time with her in an on call room and that was just the start of my day."
"You are the biggest man whore I know Mark."
"I can't help that attractive women want to sleep with me. It's a gift, not a burden Torres," Mark said.
"Yeah yeah, whatever you say."
"So I heard blondie's back to work today huh?" Mark asked and took another bite of his apple.
Callie nodded and sat up straight. "Yeah she is, but I haven't gotten a chance to see her yet."
Mark looked over Callie's shoulder at the doorway to the cafeteria just as Arizona and Teddy walked in. "Well now's your chance," he said.
Arizona spotted them and she and Teddy headed towards their table. "Hey guys," she said.
Callie looked up to find Arizona smiling brightly. "Hello to you too, how's your day been so far?"
Teddy and Arizona both sat down at the table. Teddy was quickly pulled into a conversation with mark while Arizona and Callie focused on each other.
"My day has been good. It's nice to be back. It feels like I've been gone forever," Arizona said.
"Have you been busy?"
Arizona shook her head. "Not really. When I got here the nurses gave me a big poster that said 'Welcome back '. A lot of the kids signed it, of course they don't really know why I was gone, they just know that I was gone."
Callie smiled as she listened to Arizona talk. It was nice seeing her light up while talking about something, but her ped's department usually made her feel that way. Maybe going back to work was exactly what she needed to get her mind off of everything else. So far it seemed that was the case.
Teddy and Mark were still talking but Teddy looked over at Callie and they made eye contact. They hadn't much time to speak to each other since Arizona was brought into the hospital that night, and since then Callie hadn't exactly been warm with her. That was something she needed to change. She and Teddy were friends and inside she knew that Teddy didn't let Callie know about Arizona right away to protect her. She also knew that if it had been more serious she would have let her know.
"Can I speak to you for a second Dr. Altman?" Callie asked, making everyone at the table look at her.
Teddy looked between Arizona and Callie and nodded. "Yes of course."
They got up and Arizona and Mark started talking about his new woman of the day. Callie moved over to a window in the cafeteria and Teddy came and stood beside her.
"So…" Teddy said.
"I know this last little while has been kind of tense between us and I haven't exactly made things easier," Callie said.
"Trust me, I get it, I do. I kn-"
Callie cut Teddy off, "Don't make excuses for me Teddy. You did what you thought was best and I over reacted. I didn't mean to yell at you or raise my temper. It was just shock and worry and everything I feel for Arizona all bubbling over the surface at once. I'm sorry for that and I'm sorry for not talking to you about this sooner. But with my time off to be with her and then coming back to a hectic work schedule, it's just been a lot to handle."
"Honestly, I should have called you as soon as Arizona got here," Teddy said. "It's what any doctor would do and I don't know why I didn't. But I guess I can't change that now."
"Why don't we just act like none of that happened. Arizona is fine, and so are we. Okay?"
Teddy smiled and Callie hugged her. Back at the table Mark and Arizona had watched the entire exchange, not knowing what exactly was going on or what was being talked about.
"What's that all about?" Mark asked.
"No idea," Arizona said and shrugged.
"Do you think they'll kiss?" Mark said jokingly, knowing it would get sa reaction from Arizona.
He felt a hard kick underneath the table. "Shut up Mark."
"Ow, I was only joking. Geez. Beside's, I know Teddy doesn't swing that way."
"How do you know that for sure?"
"Well I don't for sure, but the few times that we've slept together, she was very very straight."
Arizona's jaw dropped. "You…you and Teddy have slept together?"
He took the last bite of his apple and dropped the core down on his lunch tray. "We both had an itch that needed to be scratched," he replied while chewing,
"Oh my god, I do not want to hear this."
"You're a grown woman Robbins. You know adults have sex. What's the big deal?"
"The big deal is that she's Teddy and you're…well you're you."
"What the hell does that mean?" Mark asked.
Arizona scoffed. "Oh you know exactly what it means."
The woman in question was now walking back to the table laughing about something with Callie. They both took their seats again and looked at Mark and Arizona.
"Did we miss something?" Callie asked.
"Nope, nothing at all," Arizona quickly replied.
"Okay…"
A pager beeped and all four doctors reached down to their lab coat pockets or scrub pants waistband to see whose it was.
"Mine," Arizona said. "Thanks for the chat you guys. Calliope will you come with me?"
Callie nodded and got up and followed Arizona out of the cafeteria. They walked down the hallway in silence and then suddenly Callie was being pulled into a supply closet and she was pushed back against the door once it was closed.
"Whoa Arizona," Callie managed to say.
"Sorry I just needed a minute alone with you," Arizona said.
"What about your pager?"
"It wasn't important," Arizona said and leaned in close then kissed Callie hard. The brunette was surprise by the suddenness of the kiss but quickly went along with it.
Callie reached up and put her arms around Arizona's neck and kissed her back then pulled away to speak. "Arizona you've really changed a lot over the past couple days. You've hardly said anything over the past two weeks and today…today you're like a completely different person."
"Yeah?" Arizona said as she began kissing Callie's neck.
"It's just all so fast. Are you sure you're okay?"
Arizona sighed and took a step back, distancing herself from Callie. "Couldn't I just be happy and have a minute alone with my fiancé?"
Callie didn't expect Arizona to react to what she was saying so she wasn't sure how to respond. "Of course you can be happy," she said. "I just didn't expect such a big change to happen so quickly."
"Yeah well it did," Arizona replied instantly and pushed Callie away from the door so she could open it. "Now I've got to go."
"Arizona wait," Callie said and grabbed her arm.
"No Callie. Just…just no."
The blonde pulled herself out of Callie's grip and then left, leaving her alone in the supply closet not really knowing what had just happened. Callie collected her thoughts and left the closet and made her way back down to the emergency room in search of finding a case that would take her mind off of whatever it was that had just taken place between her and Arizona.
The rest of the day went by slowly and all Callie wanted was to go to Joe's and get a strong drink. So when the clock reached 7, singling the end of her shift, she changed out of her scrubs and did exactly that.
At that time of night Joe's bar wasn't too busy, most of his customers being hospital staff who weren't done work yet. Callie took a seat at the bar and started eating some of the bar nuts from a bowl sitting beside her. Joe came over to her and instantly poured her tequila without being told to.
He placed the glass in front of her and she looked up at him. "Hi Joe."
"Been a while since you've been in here Callie, how are things?"
"Um, I'm not exactly sure how things are. All I know is I needed alcohol."
"So you had one of those days huh? Then that ones on the house."
Callie smiled and picked up the glass. "Thanks Joe," she said before putting it to her lips and swallowing the strong liquid.
"Where's your girl tonight?" he asked as he picked up a cloth and started to wipe down the bar top.
"Bad question to ask Joe. Bad question."
"Why?"
"Let's just say I didn't want to go home because I wasn't sure what would be waiting for me when I got there."
"Ah, so there's a problem then."
Callie leaned her elbow on the bar counter and rested her head in her hand and stared at the bottles of alcohol lined up on shelves behind Joe. "There wasn't a problem. Or there was, or…is."
"And you're not sure what to do about it," Joe said.
"Pretty much yeah. I just said the wrong thing today without realizing it and now I…well now I don't know."
"Go home and talk to her."
Callie sat up and looked at him. "It's not that simple Joe," she said.
He smiled and poured more tequila into her glass. "Yes it is that simple. Drink this then go home and talk to her about what happened. She's probably sitting at home feeling the same way you're feeling."
"You think?"
"Well I don't know the details of what happened but I'm going to say yes."
"Thanks Joe. You're a good friend and great bartender." Callie reached into her purse and pulled out her wallet. She took out a twenty dollar bill and placed it on the counter. She got up from her barstool and winked at Joe.
"That's too much," Joe said.
"No it's not. And you can keep the change," Callie said as she turned around and headed for the door.
It was getting late and Arizona knew she should go home. But part of her felt like she couldn't leave the hospital, not after she walked out on Callie earlier that day. She didn't mean to act that way but she just couldn't help it. Something in her just snapped the second Callie mentioned her being so different. She was trying so hard to get past all the thoughts in her head and it had been working. The kids on her ped's floor helped and so did being in surgery. Being with Callie helped too, until it didn't help anymore. She knew Callie meant well, because she knew Callie loved her. So why couldn't just leave it alone and let her be the way she was being without having to make a statement.
After spending an hour sitting in her office doing nothing but laying on the couch staring up at the ceiling, Arizona decided that she needed some fresh air. She slipped down the hallway, doing her best not to be seen by any lingering parents because she knew if she were seen she would be pulled aside to answer questions. Pulling open a door that led to a staircase, Arizona entered the stairwell and made her way to the top, the door now in front of her leading to the roof of the hospital. It was a place a few of the other doctors in the hospital would go when they needed to clear their heads or to just get a moment of quiet. Across the roof sat the helicopter pad where patients in critical condition in other places would be flown in for medical care. Arizona walked towards the ledge of the roof and stood beside it as she looked out over part of the city.
The wind was blowing and she hugged herself to try to keep out some of the cold that was seeping into her skin. She listened to the sound of vehicles driving below and focused her attention on all the sounds that a busy city makes in the evening. She heard police and ambulance sirens and cars honking their horns. She heard the hum of fans and air conditioners in neighbouring buildings and the sound of people making their way through the streets below. Focusing on everything in the world in front of her meant she wasn't focusing on everything in her head. It was more then the fact that she had been beaten and mugged that was bothering her. It was the fact that she couldn't seem to get past it. She was alive and all her injuries could heal, she knew those things were certain. She just didn't know why the memories of that night were causing her so much trouble.
Her phone started to ring and she pulled it out of her pocket. Callie's name was on the screen above a photo of her. Instead of sliding her finger across where it said answer, she slid it across where it said ignore. Arizona put her phone back in her pocket and closed her eyes. Just a few more minutes and then I'll go home to her, she told herself. Just a few more minutes.
Meanwhile Callie was sitting alone in their apartment wishing for nothing more then have Arizona sitting beside her so they could talk. Really talk. She called her again but the phone just rang and rang until it went straight to voicemail.
Hey you've reached Arizona Robbins, sorry I wasn't available to answer the phone but please leave a message.
Beep.
"Arizona…hi it's me. It's Callie. I was just wondering when you'd be home, or if you're going to be stuck at the hospital because of work. Just uh, just let me know please. I-I'm sorry about earlier today."
Beep.
Callie put her phone down and moved so she was sitting in the big chair by the window. There was nothing she could do now but wait for Arizona to either come home or call. She didn't care which of the two happened, as long as one of them did. The day ended not the way she had expected it to. She imagined coming home and celebrating Arizona's first day back after two weeks off with pizza and beer and laughs and love. Now she was sitting alone in their apartment waiting. She had always hated waiting.
This story won't stay dramatic for long. It'll be happy again soon, I promise.
