Chapter Thirty-Five: Hitching a Lift

John got dressed into a plaid shirt and jeans, (not oil-soaked!) and checked himself in the mirror before walking downstairs. When he entered the dining area, he saw Chloe and Clark sat at the table, chatting.

Chloe and Clark's faces were etched with worry. John tried putting on a brave face for everyone, but he was terrified, too. When Chloe saw her boyfriend, she got up from the table and walked over to him, immediately wrapping her arms around his Kryptonian waist.

John squeezed his girlfriend tightly before kissing her crown, pulling away to look at Clark. The elder Kryptonian looked like he hadn't slept in weeks. John gave his brother a week smile. "Are you ready, Clark?"

Clark looked at his brother and nodded. "Yeah, let's go and see how the hero's doing." John nodded and the trio walked over to Chloe's car. Chloe opened the driver door and grabbed a lever embedded into the seat which brought it forward, allowing Clark to clamber in and take his seat.

When Chloe brought the seat forward, she sat down and watched John get in. When all three occupants fastened their seatbelts, Chloe ignited the engine and gradually made her way to the hospital.

Even though the mechanics had fixed the car, Chloe had discovered that there was problems with the car's tracking, meaning her wheel alignment wasn't level, which was causing problems with her steering. She was able to drive the car, just not as well as she usually could.

When she shifted into third gear as she made her way to the hospital, John turned on the car's radio, not realising what frequency Chloe had set it to. "Okay, next up on KLOE, we have a resident of Smallville, here to give her account on the attempted robbery of The Talon a few days ago. Mrs. Turner, can you tell us..."

John turned the radio off, not wanting to trigger any memories for himself and Chloe. He looked back at Clark, glad he turned the radio off when he heard his brother sigh loudly. John spoke to his elder sibling. "Anything I can do, Clark?"

Clark shook his head and looked down at his trainers. "No, I just want to get through this. Chloe, can I ask a favour?" Chloe looked at Clark through her rear-view mirror and nodded. "Sure, Clark." Clark sighed and shut his eyes, trying to fight tears. "Is there any possibility you could drive John and me back home after we're finished at the hospital? I just want to get as much work done on the farm as I can before I collapse from exhaustion."

Chloe smiled weakly at her friend and nodded. "I was planning to, anyway, I'm staying with John, and giving you both my full support. Deal with it." Clark looked up at his friend and smiled. "Thanks, Chloe."

Chloe nodded and turned her attention back to the road. John looked out of his window and saw a green road sign. He mumbled the sign's lettering loud enough for everyone to hear, though he didn't realise he'd done that.

"Smallville General Hospital, next right... Oh, Dad..." John's heart hit the floor as he slumped in his seat. He was terrified for two reasons, one being that he'd never set foot inside a hospital and the other being that couldn't bear to see the man he regarded as his father in such a way.

As soon as she was able, Chloe steered right and pulled into the hospital parking lot. She stopped the car and got out so Clark could exit the vehicle. When both Kryptonians exited the vehicle, she pushed her seat back so it clicked into place and locked her car.

Without John even realising, Chloe had taken John's hand in her own, while Clark stood at his brother's opposite side. Clark turned to his brother. "Are you ready?" John shook his head. "No, but we have to be strong for our father."

Chloe squeezed John's hand and the trio walked inside Smallville General Hospital.
