Disclaimer: I don't own Supernatural.
Castiel watched the world pass by at the slow pace of the car as they drove down road after road. He loved it, being able to take in all that he could see as they went past. Observing it all with the background beat of rock music he relaxed. In some strange way it felt right, as if this was the place he was supposed to be, In the back of the impala with Dean and Sam in the front. That was a strange thought for the fledgling, but he was so relaxed and so happy to be there that he didn't dwell on it too much and instead went back to observing earth through the back window of the car.
Sam was also looking out the window, though his was the passenger one. It was strange to have two angels in the back but that's life right? So he instead turned his mind to the case that they were heading to. He had read the reports that Gabriel had accessed, but he didn't really understand how Gabriel knew this was an angel. I mean the only ones he had ever seen explode people were the archangels, and the less he thought about that the better. He did not like to be reminded of the time he clicked his fingers and blew Cas up. Even if it was Lucifer who had done it, it was still him. But be that as it may as far as he knew Gabriel was the only archangel left, and from what Sam could see he didn't have the power to explode anyone right now. So that brought back the question of what angel could do this? Oh he knew that he should probably be thinking about the information they had just got from Kevin but he was pretty sure that the most knowledgeable, and therefore the most likely to figure it out was Gabriel. Dean no doubt had the worrying about Cas down, so that left Sam with thinking about the case and how they were going to stop an angel that could explode people.
Sam was right, Dean was worrying about Cas. He was worried that he was with them and they were going after angels, he was worried about what Meta-douche might have done to him, and he was worried that he might never come back. Not the Cas that Dean knew, who was his best friend. I mean if the grace was used in a spell did that mean it was all gone? Was Cas stuck a fledgling forever now? Dean had no answers to these questions, but that didn't stop them going round his head. He just hoped Gabriel did and was willing to share when they had the time to talk. He better be in a sharing mood, cos Dean needed to know what was going on with his family.
Gabriel knew Dean was anxious to talk to him about this new information and he knew he wanted answers. The problem was Gabriel didn't have them all. The hours of the journey to Rexford had given him time to think and organise his thoughts and he had come to some startling conclusions. First being that Metatron had indeed taken Castiel's grace, it was the only explanation for what had happened, though it did raise the question of how Castiel still had some. When he thought about it Gabriel had come up with two possible answers, both as farfetched as the other in his mind, but they were the only explanations he could think of. The first was that Castiel still having his grace was connected to the fact that his brother had used it to heal Dean. Now the only reference Gabriel had to grace being in a human (in the normal run of things at any rate) was the small amount left in a vessel when an angel departed, but that wasn't much and it certainly wasn't enough to stop what Metatron had done to Castiel. But, and here was the thing, Castiel had used a lot more than a small amount of grace to heal Dean after hell, and as such could have created a bond between his grace and Deans soul, which in turn could be the source of the grace the fledgling now had. It was unlikely and Gabriel had never heard of anything like it (then again he couldn't remember a time when an angel had used their own grace to heal a human soul before either), but it was not impossible. The other explanation was just as weird but just as probable all things considered. It was the fact that he wouldn't put it past their dad to be doing a bit of divine intervention, Cassie had after all been brought back from the dead more times than he could count by the man. So it could be his doing.
The next question, which to Gabriel was the most worrying, was did Metatron know Castiel still had some of his grace? And if so was he looking for him? Because Gabriel would bet his angel blade that if Metatron did know he would search the world for Castiel so he could finish what he started. Castiel was a threat to former scribe of god. And right now his little brother would be no match for the dick. What he needed was information on what Metatron was up to and what his movements were. Though how to get that he wasn't completely sure right now.
The next thought he processed was what this information meant to the idea of re-opening heaven. From what Kevin had said Gabriel hoped there was a way to do it in the footnote and it was just the case of the dick-bag scribe having decided to not record that so well. He hoped the prophet could translate it, and he hoped he could do it. Not because he wanted to get all his brothers and sisters home, though getting them off of earth would probably be a good thing, but that he may be able to help get his brother back to who he was supposed to be.
And then finally there was this case. An angel going rogue. That thought obviously lead him to wonder how many more rogue angels were out there (hence him starting to think getting them back to heaven was a good plan). I mean they had been kicked out of heaven and thrown to earth with absolutely no real knowledge of the place. Oh he had seen on the net that factions had popped up, but the one thing he didn't want was his brothers and sisters starting a war on earth. They so didn't need that right now, no what they needed was to work together and find the way to get back into heaven or to live peacefully on earth. Now normally he wouldn't concern himself with the doings of his family. He had left a long time ago. But if he was to find a way to get Cassie's grace back (he refused to believe it was gone until Kevin told him otherwise), and monitor Metatron then he was going to need some help. So he needed to know who the leaders were. Who it was he needed to talk too. Damn it. He so didn't want to have to deal with any of the angels right now, but he would have to move soon so he had there trust and could act as soon as he had the information from Kevin.
But first he had to stop the Rit Zien from killing anymore humans it saw as being in pain. Oh dad, when did life get so complicated?
