Chapter Thirty-Five: The Hero
Matt watched as the officer laid out the blue print of house across the hood of the police car, he listened as they talked about entry point, but nothing matter if they couldn't get Gabby out safe. He looked over at the house again, but this time something caught his eye, a glowing flame burst into his view.
"Antonio," Matt called out pointing at the house as they watched the flames grow higher.
Gabby tried to stand up but the pain in her abdomen caused her to call out in pain. She needed to get out of here, but with Jay standing over her, she knew that it would be unlikely. "Help!" she screamed as loud as she could.
"We need to get in there," Matt said as panic ran through him. Before Matt could continue he heard Gabby scream for help. The hell with the game plan, Matt thought as his feet raced toward the front door.
"Matt!" Antonio and Severide shouted after him, both immediately followed Matt up the porch.
Without thinking Matt lunged for the door and rushed through the threshold, "Gabby," he called out once he was in the cabin.
"Matt!" she shouted after hearing his voice.
"Gabby!" he called again as he moved further inside.
Jay saw Matt moving towards him, "You just couldn't leave us alone," he said as he swung and hit Matt in the jaw. "I told you not to play hero, but here you are," Jay said as he punched Matt again. Matt took the second blow, but he saw Jay ready to swing again and quickly stepped out of range. Once Jay dropped his arm, Matt swung hitting Jay in the nose, he then hit Jay again in the stomach. Pure angry blocked him from seeing clearly, he just kept swinging, until he felt a pair of hands on him.
"Matt," Severide said as he pulled him off of Jay. Matt tried to get out of Severide's reach but he couldn't. "Come on man we got to get out of here," he said bringing Matt back to reality. Matt looked around to find Gabby being helped up Antonio. He quickly rushed over to her and picked her up and carried her out of the cabin. Antonio moved over to Jay and with Severide's help carried him out of the burning building.
Once Matt got Gabby to safe place he set her down on the ground. "Baby, I love you," he said as he placed both of his hands on the sides of her face and then placed a kiss on her forehead. He needed to kiss her and make sure she was real, but as he went to kiss her lips she let out a cry of pain. Matt pulled back to assess her, "Baby what's the matter?" he asked checking her over.
"The baby," she cried in pain again.
Matt turned around, "We need a medic!" he yelled out. "Everything is going to be alright," he said trying to sooth her the best way he could, but he knew that Gabby was to smart to be buying what he was saying.
"Matt, I'm so sorry," Gabby began to say as she winced in pain with tears in her brown eyes.
"Baby you have nothing be sorry for, you did great," he said kissing the top of her forehead again. He looked up and saw to paramedics running over to them with a gurney and a bag. They surrounded each side of Gabby, they began take her vitals.
"What happened," the guy to Gabby's right asked.
"I fell," Gabby stated as she held her stomach.
"How far along are you?"
"About twenty-one weeks," Gabby said with tears know flowing down her face now.
The PIC nodded his head, "Alright, we are going to take you to Forest Hospital to get checked out, but first we need to get you loaded on the gurney."
Gabby just nodded her head. Matt didn't wait for the paramedics he picked Gabby up and placed her on the stretcher, "Sir..." the paramedic began to say.
"Just get her to the fucking rig," Matt yelled. He had to make sure that Gabby was okay and he didn't have time to follow the protocol. He followed behind as the paramedics began to rush Gabby toward the ambulance.
"Sir…" The paramedic began to say again.
"I'm her husband," Matt said as she lifted himself up into the rig and shut the doors, there was no way he was leaving Gabby's side.
The ride to the hospital was longer than Matt liked, he hated seeing Gabby in any pain and the thought that something was wrong with the baby amplified his fears even more. He tried to keep his composure, but with each flitch or wince of pain from Gabby made him break a little more inside.
Matt leaned over to Gabby, "I love you he," as he moved a piece out of her face. Gabby just nodded her head as more tears streamed down her face.
Once they arrived at the hospital, Gabby rushed into emergency room. Matt was stopped by a nurse, she explained to him that he needed to wait out here. Man stood in the hallway and ran his hand through his hair and for the first time that night he cried.
Matt sat in the waiting room with Antonio and Severide.
"You need some coffee?" Severide asked looking between the two men. Both of them nodded their heads no as he got up and walked out of the waiting area.
"When I find out that Gabby was pregnant, I'm not going to lie I was pissed off," Antonio said looking down at his hands. "She kept telling me that it didn't matter what I thought that she was having a baby and I better get use to it. Now I can't image her without that baby."
"I can't image my life without either one of them," Matt said taking a deep breath. He glanced at the door of the waiting room and saw the nurse from earlier, "Excuse me, are you Matt Casey?"
"Yes," he said standing up.
"Ms. Dawson is asking for you, would you please follow me."
Matt didn't need to be asked twice as he did as the nurse directed him. They walked down a long cold hallway before turning into small hospital room. Gabby was lying on the bed. He moved to the side she was facing and placed a light kiss on her forehead.
"What did the doctor say?" he asked taking Gabby's hand in his own.
"He said the fall caused me to have contractions, but they gave me some medicine to stop them. The doctor should be back in just a minute to complete an ultrasound to make sure Jackson is okay, but if everything checks out we should be able to go home."
"Are you sure?" Matt asked with concern in his voice.
"I'll most likely have to be on bed rest for the rest of this pregnancy, but it should be okay."
"Hello," a voice called from the doorway. "So are we ready to do the ultrasound?" the doctor asked as he took a seat on the stool in front of the machine.
"Yes," Gabby clearly stated as she began to hold her breath. The doctor pulled up the shirt and placed the cold jell on Gabby's belly. He then took the wand and began to move it around on the surface of her skin, within seconds a strong heart beat filled the room and image of their son displayed on the screen.
"Everything looks great," the doctor said reassuring Matt and Gabby.
