Disclaimer: I don't own Merlin
Lizard
Merlin watched as Freya came up to him. She was walking barefoot as usual, and Merlin couldn't help but frown a little at the thought of her delicate feet being injured in any way. In her hands she held a small lizard that was surprisingly calm given its circumstances.
"He was taking on a crow over a piece of dried meat. I don't know how he could be so stupid." She bent down and held out her hands so that Merlin could see the reptile.
It was a dull brown but there was a hint of red in its scales. As if on cue, the lizard opened its eyes and stared at the warlock. They were a brilliant blue, flecked with gold and surprisingly big for such a small animal. He was very young, probably not more than two weeks old and Merlin could see the trust it had placed in Freya that she would not harm him.
Freya brought her hands down to let the lizard crawl off and onto Merlin's lap. The boy put down the knife and stick he'd been whittling and brought his hands to encircle his lap and keep the lizard from jumping off.
"I've decided to call him Arthur." Merlin looked up from where the lizard had curled up in his tunic. He couldn't understand why she would call him Arthur. He'd left Camelot years ago, fed up with his destiny and Uther's rule. Arthur was now king and though Merlin had taken care of several magical threats from afar, Arthur had had no need for his protection.
Merlin said as much.
"Because your destiny has you protect Arthur. Now you will have an Arthur to protect, even if he isn't human." Merlin couldn't help but smile as she walked back towards the little house they'd built for themselves all those years ago.
The lizard – no – Arthur stretched out on his knee before closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep.
Just wanted to shout out to OneSideOfACoin! I updated last week, then went out for a short walk and when I come back I have about 20 e-mails just waiting for me. You have no idea how much that made my day. Thank you!
