The stereo in the reception blared out The Script's song, I'm Yours, during the first dance.
Adam and Kirsty were to have their own dance before anyone else joined in, so as soon as everyone was in the hall and had at least one drink to hand, they were shoved onto the dance floor, otherwise known as the space where tables had been shifted to the side to make a makeshift floor.
Jay had grabbed Zoe's hand as best man and head bridesmaid, and Nick was attempting to dance with Nita, but failing, and Nita swapped with Zoe as soon as the older woman offered.
"You healed these scars over time
Embraced my soul
You loved my mind
You're the only angel in my life
The day news came my best friend died
My knees went weak and you saw me cry
Say I'm still the soldier in your eyes,"
Kirsty sang along in Adam's ear, this was one of their favourite songs at the moment, and both had listened to it that many times, they knew it off by heart.
"I may not have the softest touch
I may not say the words as such
And though I may not look like much
I'm yours
And though my edges may be rough
I never feel I'm quite enough
It may not seem like very much
But I'm yours
"I may not have the softest touch
I may not say the words as such
I know I don't fit in that much
But I'm yours,"
They both sang the last few verse and chorus together, to themselves, and swayed in time, not having moved for a while.
At the end of the song Kirsty swapped with Nita to dance with Jay, and Nita went with Adam.
"Strike up the band, let's start a fire,
Put up your hands show your desire,
If you want this, don't hold back.
Ask you to stand like one of the choir,
Lift up your voice, build it higher in this moment,
Don't look back."
Olly Murs' song was another of the couple's favourites. Nita and Adam talked quietly over the music. "Thanks for this, Nita," Adam said to his step-daughter.
"It's fine, Ad. I'm glad Mum found you," she paused, "but if you even think of hurting her, emotionally or physically, I will hunt you down and you won't know what's hit you. Understand?" Nita asked her new step-dad.
"Yes ma'am." Adam nodded sincerely. "I wouldn't dream of hurting a single hair on your mother's head, Nita. I swear on my life."
"Good. And I'm happy for you both. She's got a sparkle back in her eyes that I remember seeing a very long time ago. I'm happy that you've got the same sparkle as well."
"And you're sure you're fifteen?" Adam laughed. Sometimes the girl was really old for her age.
"Just be lucky you've got me at this age and not as a toddler." Nita laughed. "My wisdom surprises even me at times."
"I don't want to be anywhere else
And if I have to give all of myself
I don't want to be anywhere else but here with you."
"I think you would have been an adorable toddler. I'll have your mum show me pictures."
"Don't you dare, Trueman."
"You can't call me that now. You're Trueman-Clements."
"I know. Hey, can I..." Nita paused. "No, stupid question."
"What? Tell me," Adam said.
"Can I call you Dad? You've been a better Dad than mine, and I want to show that I'm cool about this."
"Nita," Adam smiled. "You don't have to if you don't want to. I'm not replacing Warren."
"I know. But I want to."
"Alright," Adam smiled.
"That's cool, Dad." Nita smirked.
"I quite like that."
"I do too."
"Lost in the sounds, a song in your head
Jumping around, nothing compares to this moment
And nothing ever will."
"Thanks, Jay. You've been a real help."
"It's fine, Kirst. Just doing what I need to to keep him in line."
"Hmm, just look at him with Nita. If he keeps denying that he's not gonna be a good father, I'll make sure he sees how good he is with Nita."
"You're pregnant?" Jay asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, we were going to announce if at work at the end of the week, but we thought that we'd tell you and Zoe." Kirsty said. Jay hugged her and picked her up slightly.
"I'm so happy for you Kirsty."
"Thanks, Jay."
"How are you and Ruth? Is she getting any better?" Kirsty asked.
"Yeah, Charlie said they're planning discharging her soon. She'll be on medication, just to stop the swings, but she should be back to normal."
"That's really good, Jay. Listen, if you need any help, or want to ask anything about her condition, I'm here. And I'll get Charlie to see if he wants me to keep an eye on her."
"Ta, Kirst. I forget you're a mental health nurse."
"Yeah, I was when I was at St. Mary's, they transferred me to the ED three weeks before the incident that caused me to pack in there." Kirsty smiled sadly.
"If you want me and Zoe to share looking after Nita when you go on your honeymoon, we'll willingly do it. She's a good kid, Kirst."
"Of course she is. She reminds me so much of Warren. Before we had her, I mean. I... When we were in love," Kirsty tried to explain.
"She reminds you of the good him, though, before his illness hit, and before the bad times?"
"Yeah."
"She reminds me of you. She's got your personality, determined, passionate and caring."
Kirsty smiled. "When she was little she used to steal my stethoscope and pretend to be a doctor with her dad. She used to help him get better. She was only playing in her head, but it took me back to when Warren saw her for the first time. She was beautiful. She still is, but I fell in love with her. Head over heels. Warren was jealous, and he took that out on me."
"Kirsty," Jay sighed. He noticed Nick approaching, "I think someone wants a dance." Jay put Kirsty's hand in Nick's, and he went to dance with Nita. Adam danced with Zoe.
"A million eyes stare into space
Not you and I, we're face to face
I don't want to be anywhere else but here.
Turn the whole world upside down, let's pour it out
Let's all reach for higher ground, while we're looking down."
"Can I offer my congratulations?" Nick asked.
"What's she said?" Kirsty asked, knowing all too well that Zoe had probably spilled to Nick.
"I think you and Adam will make brilliant parents." Nick smiled. "I was also hoping for a word at work if you were interested."
"Hmm, what about?" Kirsty asked, she was sure she hadn't put a foot out of line.
"Tess is considering stepping down from her duties as Clinical Nurse Manager. I asked if she had anyone in mind for the job, her first choice was Charlie, of course, but her second was you. Charlie is going the same way too, and you have their complete support."
"What? You're offering me a new job?"
"Yes? It would mean taking a more lead role in coordinating the team, with help to start from Tess and Charlie, and then just going over with me costs and funding in the ED. I personally think you would be suited to the job as well."
"Well, I mean... Thank you for the offer, Nick. Wow. Could I have a few days to sort my head out? I mean just to sort stuff out... it's still a bit hectic at home."
"I understand, Kirsty. And with the new job offer, if you need any time off at all, I'm sure Tess or Charlie would be happy to help share the load."
"Thanks, Nick."
"Strike up the band, let's start a fire,
Put up your hands show your desire,
If you want this, don't hold back.
I don't want to be anywhere else
And if I have to give all of myself
I don't want to be anywhere else but here with you
A million eyes stare into space
Not you and I, we're face to face
I don't want to be anywhere else but here, with you."
As the song finished, Kirsty and Nick, Zoe and Adam, and Nita and Jay parted ways, and went back to their respective seats ready for the speeches.
Adam pulled out Kirsty's chair for her, and sat next to her, Jay on his other side. Nita, Zoe and Nick were the other side of Kirsty. "Nick's just offered me a promotion," she whispered to Adam.
"That's great, Kirsty," he smiled.
Jay stood up with the microphone that the DJ handed him once he had faded out the song. He coughed a few times to draw everyone's attention.
"Right, for those of you who don't know me, I'm Jay, Adam's best man. Adam has been one of my best mates for a few years now, and I've seen him at both the best and worst of times. I've also been close friends with Kirsty since she started work at Holby a few years back, and I've always admired how caring, strong-willed and smart she is.
"These two were made for each other, and I'm sure you can all agree that they will be very happy in wherever their lives together take them. So, let's toast to Adam and Kirsty!"
The reception attendees all raised their glasses with Jay and chorused the toast, "Adam and Kirsty!"
Zoe stood, and she waited for everyone to resettle before she began talking.
"Hello, I'm Zoe, Kirsty's bridesmaid. Kirsty and Adam have been through thick and thin already, and I am sure that they will continue to withstand whatever their new life together will throw at them as well. They were the best of friends before they became a couple, and I am sure that they will be for the rest of their lives. Both of them are strong, kind, and beautiful people who deserve all the kindness and love in the world. So, once again, let's toast the married couple," she paused so everyone could stand for the last time, "Kirsty and Adam!"
Once again, the toast was echoed with gusto, "Kirsty and Adam!"
Whilst everyone was enjoying the food that caterers had begun to bring out, Kirsty and Adam excused themselves from the party for a few minutes, taking time to step outside. Music had begun to play again, and they noticed the song that Jay had no doubt picked.
"This is the start of something beautiful
This is the start of something new
You are the one who'd make me lose it all
You are the start of something new,"
Kirsty held Adam's hand and pulled him into a hug, and they began to slowly move to the song. Adam pressed a kiss to Kirsty's head, and as snow began to fall around them, they danced.
A/N: Thank you so much to everyone who continued to read my story after I had put it on hiatus. I am so sorry for the delay, but as Adele said "life happened", and I am now on my way to finishing my A Levels and off to university this new year.
I have gone back and edited a few things from the last chapter, since I changed my mind about the dances at the wedding.
This story has spanned the course of five years, and my writing has come on so far, the beginning of this story compared to the end makes me appreciate all of the help and guidance from reviewers.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a very happy New Year.
