He walks confidently down the hall

to his very first class.

Annoying as she is,

he's glad he followed Cynthia's advice

to memorize the school map before his first day.

All the other freshmen were wandering around

noses glues to their maps.

He's glad he isn't.

He's determined to make high school better than middle school.

And he can't do that

if he's just some stereotype.

~24~

She's totally and completely out of her depth.

High school is so much bigger

and scarier

than she thought it would be.

It wasn't so much the actual school.

Or the people inside it with her.

It was the concept

and the idea that she was old enough

to be a high school student.

She didn't feel old enough.

She still felt like a middle schooler

playing pretend.

She wonders when she grew up so much,

and hopes no one sees just how

out of place

she is.
