Chapter 35

Joey waits silently, deciding that she will give Charlie all the time she needs, understanding that this is hard for Charlie, for many reasons. Charlie smiles sweetly at her lover and then moves closer to her, taking her hand she can feel the spark between them and that makes her feel untouchable. She swallows hard before beginning, sharing a part of her life that she has never shared with anyone.

"So Davenport and I worked together several years ago, we were partners and got on really well at first. After a really tough shift he asked me if I wanted to go for a drink and I agreed. I was fairly new to the job and he was well established and I admit that I looked up to him." Charlie watches Joey as she explains the story, not wanting it to affect them in any way, but very aware that it could. Smiling reassuringly she continues,

"Anyway we went for that drink and we had a nice night. After that it became a regular thing and we started dating." Joey flinches at this and Charlie looks to the floor and releases her hand, Joey grabs her hand and holds it tighter as Charlie relives this moment,

"At first he was charming and a gentleman, and then one night after dinner he dropped me back at home and asked if he could come in for a coffee. I was unsure but invited him in anyway." She pauses briefly as she remembers all of the feelings from that night.

"After we finished our coffee I told him it was getting late and I had an early shift. He smiled and said okay. I walked him to the door." Joey noticed the tears welling in Charlie's eyes and is unsure she should make her continue. However Charlie doesn't give her the chance to interrupt,

"He lent in and kissed me goodnight. I reciprocated but it just didn't feel right so I pulled away. Then he just changed, he pushed me against the wall and started ranting about women always leading him on." Joey swallows hard, unsure of where this is going but knowing that she needs to be strong for Charlie, just as Charlie has been for her. Charlie looks at Joey's expression and puts her mind at ease by continuing,

"Nothing other than that happened darling. He ranted for a while and then just left. I reported the incident to my superior officer and a meeting was held. Davenport apologised and we were assigned new partners." Joey smiled a little and then said,

"So you never slept with him?" even as the question left he mouth she regretted it saying straight away,

"I'm sorry. That's none of my business." Charlie shakes her head saying,

"No we never slept together, but after the meeting things got really awkward. He began making things very hard for me at work, making me look stupid in front of my superiors and giving me a hard time. He began following me outside of work and even threatened a friend of mine he thought I was seeing. Finally it all became too much and I made an official complaint." Joey rubbed Charlie's arm in support as she carried on,

"Interviews were conducted, reports were made but nothing could be proved and it became my word against his. Needless to say my superiors stuck by him and I was transferred. Honestly I haven't heard from him since. Until now." Joey now understands Charlie's discomfort at his presence and says to the troubled older woman,

"Why is he back now? I mean is he involved in this case or not?" Charlie shakes her head and says,

"Watson told me he hasn't been with the force for two years; that he was fired after raping and beating a female officer." Charlie stops and moves closer to her love, reassuring her.

"He will not get close to either of us Joey. I promise you that. Watson is gathering all the information she can on him." Joey tries to convince Charlie that she is ok by leaning forward and placing a soft kiss on the beautiful police officers lips. However Charlie can feel the distance once again between them, keen to stop Joey backing away she says,

"Joey I promise you. Everything will be just fine. Watson and I will track him down." Joey smiles warmly at her woman, feeling as though this is far from over, feeling as though once again someone will try and tear them apart.

Charlie leans in closely and takes Joey tightly in her arms saying,

"It's me and you beautiful."
