36.) Splicing

Back to school is tomorrow for Garfield Logan, but first he has to settle with New York's newest villain. It's not the usual rogues he's facing but instead, another genetically modified villain.

"RROOAAAHHH!" shout a large, brown humanoid half-man, half-bear wearing a black unitard. "I am the Grizzly, and I am here to take you down, Spider-Man!"

"...Okay." Spider-Man respond as he jumps up to avoid the car the Grizzly just threw at. 'Maybe it's time I get to use my bear jokes that I've been saving up.' he thought as he shouts "Sorry Yogi, but no pic-a-nic basket for you!" he shoots his web to blind the bear man, but his claws only tear it off. "Geez, the Berestain Bears must be looking for you, but I can help you find your Brother Bear!"

'Is he making bear puns while fighting a bear man!?' the citizens and police thought as they see the webslinger fighting off the bear man.

"Time to use tackle on Ursaring!" Spider-Man quipped as he punches the large bear man down, causing him to hit another car "It's super effective!"

Grizzly growled as he gets up, beginning to tackle Spider-Man again until Spidey shoots web balls out from his wrist that shoots out large net made of webs, thus covering him. "What is this stuff!?"

"Web-Nets, specialty of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man." Spider-Man said as he stands on Grizzly's head "And now, care to tell me what's a giant bear doing here in New York? Wocka-Wocka."

"Grr, like I'm going to tell you about how I got my powers from Jackal." he said not realizing that he just spoiled his origins.

"Wow, you're not so bright are you, Pooh Bear?" Spider-Man asked as Grizzly's eyes widen. "Well, time to fly. And remember, only you can prevent forest fires!" he said as he shot some web and swings off, leaving the police to detain Grizzly. 'Can't get enough of them bear jokes.' He sang in his head.

"No I don't think I know anything about a bear man." Dr. Victor Stone told Spider-Man while cooking up some chemicals. "You sure it wasn't created by that Doctor Octopus?"

"Haven't heard from Ock in ages." Spider-Man replied as he frowns "In fact, Grizzly's the third animal themed villain I've faced this week. First was the Kangaroo…

Flashback.

Many citizens were running and screaming, all due to the new villain terrorizing the city. He appears to be a half-man, half-kangaroo. Basically, a man with kangaroo ears with large kangaroo-like legs, wears an orange shirt, black shorts, and wears a pouch belt to put the money he stole.

"Kangaroo? Seriously?" Spider-Man said as he shoots his web at the Kangaroo.

"…And then there's this Manotaur guy."

Flashback, Saturday.

A large, humanoid bull man throws out a lot of cars, as Spider-Man helps out some civilians from the Manotaur. Luckily, he has some web fluid enough to trap the Manotaur.

"Just where do these guys came from?" he asked as he noticed the yellow sparkling liquid "What's that your making there, doc?"

"These?" Victor said looking at his brew of the yellow liquid "Well with all the genetically modified creatures Slade Wilson made, me and the wife decided to create these Gene Cleansers. We've planned to use them to expel non-human DNA out of the super criminals and those who are victims of the illegal genetic splicing."

"Expel non-human DNA? You mean this stuff is going to be a... permanent process?" Spider-Man asked the doctor.

"Yeah, I've been funded by Wayne Industries to help cure the super criminals. I've tested it on myself since the Lizard incident." Victor replied "No side-effects, no setbacks, the cure would be a miracle." suddenly the door opens showing another doctor coming in.

"Dr. Stone, I like to- oh, didn't know we have guests." said the other doctor noticing Spider-Man.

"Hey Sam, this is Spidey. Spidey, meet Dr. Samuel Register, our senior scientist who's working alongside us recently. He's known for his computer simulation on genetics." Dr. Stone introduced.

"Nice to meet you, look I gotta go, laters!" Spider-Man said as he heads out of the window.

"What an incredible specimen." Dr. Register said with a glint in his eyes, showing interest to the arachnid.

First day of school's been easy for Garfield, as his start of his Senior year goes out quite nicely. Other than the fact that most of his friends are not around. Kori and Rachel transferred to another school, Rose disappeared to join SHIELD, Terra and Dick are...gone, so it's just him being alone this year.

'I'm going to be so alone this school year!' Garfield thought as he shuts his locker. He heads down to his next class as he sigh 'The only good thing about this is that Adonis got expelled last year so I don't have to worry about bullies.'

"What's up, Garfield!" spoke a voice as Gar turns to see Conner Kent. "Bet you have a great summer."

"Hey Conner." Garfield replied, remembering him to be Clark's younger brother "I've been good, selling pictures for the Bugle is a smooth job to handle these days."

"Yeah I bet." Connor responded as he looked at the boy and narrowed his eyes. "Hey where are your friends? I haven't seen anyone of them and I heard rumors that they left."

"They did." Garfield frowned. "Rose went to some private school in Europe or something and Kori went to a private school upstate."

"That sucks." Connor commented. "Looks like you're all out of friends now." He frowned.

"Yeah. It's going to be pretty lonely this year." Garfield nodded his head in agreement.

Conner felt bad for Garfield as an idea pops out of his head "Say tell you what, why don't ya hang out with me and my friends outside the lunch tables during lunch if you want."

"Really? Thanks for the offer." Garfield said with a smile, thanking god that Conner is one of the nice jocks in the school. Things would be way better for the rest of the school year-

"AHHH! MONKEY MAN!" shout one of the students running away from the halls.

"Monkey man?" Garfield asked as he hears the cries of the students as they run away from what appears to be an orange furred man wearing only pants, with hands for feet. "You've got to be kidding me." he muttered.

"What the hell is that!?" Conner asked as the monkey man jumps onto a wall, starring at Garfield's direction.

"Don't know, but we should run!" Garfield said as Conner agrees as the jock went to get the students to safety while Garfield hurried out. The dirty blond nerd then sensed that the monkey man is after him 'Why is he following me!?' he thought as the monkey man does a flip and cornered Garfield 'I can't change out of my suit, great!'

"You take, pictures of Spider-Man?!" the Monkey man asked while cornering Garfield. "Logan, are you not!?"

"U-Uh y-yeah." Garfield replied, wondering just how does this monkey man knew him!? 'Don't tell me my secret's out! What does a monkey man want with me!?' he then looks at the monkey man pick something out from his pants pocket, and hands a flash drive to Garfield.

"Take this to him!" he snarled at him as the school guard are seen far from the hall. "Spider-Man meet Gibbon on 4th Street!" he said while hitting his own chest when saying 'Gibbon'. He then rushed away from Garfield and jumps out from the window before the school guards could catch him.

"First a rhino, scorpion, and now a monkey has invaded the school?" one guard was baffled.

"Welcome to New York." another replied as he looks at Garfield "You alright, kid?"

"Y-Yeah, I'm fine." Gar respond as he hid the flash drive in his pocket 'Weirdest. School Day. Ever.'

Later on that day after he got home from school, the young hero took out the flash drive that he was given and inserted it into his computer. "Okay. Let's see what we got here." He cracked his fingers as he opened the files on the computer and for two hours he looked through and made his own documentations of everything in the files and cursed as he felt his soul decay as he read more and more.

"This is terrible." Garfield choked as he removed the flash drive from his computer and turned off his computer, all the while trying not to cry. "Why does this happen to good people?"

Garfield stands up, walks out of his room as he rushed downstairs while passing by his Aunt Rita.

"Garfield, where are you in a hurry?" she asked.

"Heading out to the Bugle!" he replied, lying to his Aunt that he's heading out to find the monkey man at 4th Street.

As Spider-Man, Gar is swinging around Manhattan as he heads down to 4th Street. The problem was that 4th Street has some roads crossing over so it's hard to find a monkey man in New York. 'Next time, ask for specific details.' he thought as he saw a shadowy blur at one of the alleyways. 'Okay, just found Mojo over there.' he thought as he swings down to that alleyway as he walks down "Hello? Is King Louie around here?!" he asked out loud in the alley. "I got a message from the kid who takes pictures of me that you want me to meet you here!"

"Now we've meet, Spider!" the monkey man jumps down in front of Spidey who backs away.

"Alright, so what's the deal in invading schools, Magilla?" Spider-Man demands. "Cause that school has too many villains invading there last spring."

"Gibbon wish no harm, Spider." Gibbon said as he calmly crawls around the red and blue arachnid. "Gibbon needs Spider's help against Jackal!"

"Jackal, huh?" Spider-Man narrows, this Jackal guy he's been hearing from Grizzly first "I've heard what happened to you, Gibbon. You were in one of the records from the flash drive."

"Yes." Gibbon replied looking down in sadness "Gibbon was sick and dying. Big corporations twelve years ago, offered Gibbon treatments, but turned Gibbon into an outcast!" Gibbon growled "Gibbon doesn't remember real name, but remembers family, friends, child before Gibbon's transformation!" he cried as he looks up at the arachnid "When Gibbon learns about you, hero, you are like Gibbon and others. Gibbon escapes from them to find you!"

Spider-Man feels bad for the monkey man. This man was once a normal person and those corporations that had experimented on him turned him to an outcast to society. 'Poor guy, once I find the one behind his state, I'm going to help him get cured.' he thought as he pats the furry man's back "Don't worry, Gibbon. I'll help you to bust those creeps who did this to you."

"Gibbon thanks Spider-Man." Gibbon replied feeling that he can rely on the arachnid.

"Now, tell me where can I find the Jackal's base?"

'So, I don't know who to turn to at the moment. I can't endanger Dr. Stone by telling him about the documents, luckily he can provide the gene cleansers for Gibbon and his Zoo Crew.' Spidey thought as he follows Gibbon to an abandoned subway tunnel. 'Daredevil and Elektra are MIA, don't want to bother the X-Men with this since they're busy finding more mutants, and Spider-Woman...well, I don't know if I can rely on her or not.' the thought of Spider-Woman was in his mind for some reason, as he shook his head 'Come on, Gar! Stop thinking about Spider-Woman's sexy butt and find this Jackal!' he really need to clean his mind of his teenage dirty thoughts.

"Jackal claims to be a savior, a good doctor." Gibbon said as he leads Spider-Man down the tunnel. "Gibbon realized soon that Jackal far from good. Connections to AIM for Jackal's gene splicing. Turning Gibbon's comrades into animals."

"So just a reminder, he's responsible for those like Grizzly, Kangaroo, and the Manotaur that I've been fighting for this past week?" Spidey has faced the Kangaroo before, terrorizing banks. Then there was the Manotaur who was wreaking havoc around Time Square. "Man, to think I thought they were goons cooked up from the oven of Dr. Octopus."

"Octopus someone also a Bestial?" Gibbon asked.

"A what now?" Garfield asked.

"That's what we call ourselves, those who were spliced with animal DNA by Jackal." Gibbon explained as he stops and sniffs the air. "Squid."

"Squid?" Spider-Man asked as his spidey-senses kicks in, as he jumps up, avoiding getting hit by a large tendril.

"Who dares enter Jackal's realm!?" gurgled a green scaly humanoid creature with black eyes, no mouth, and has six moving tentacles from his side and two black tentacles for legs.

"Right, Squidward." Spider-Man groans as he picks himself up "We're facing an overgrown mutated squid. Nice." he deadpanned.

"Also, theirs Puma, Human Fly and Vermin." Gibbon responded as he lunged at the tentacle man.

"Monkey boy? So, you've betrayed us... why am I not surprised." Squid deadpanned as he whipped a tentacle around and smacked the hairy man away.

"Okay, my Spidey-Senses senses something sinister surrounding us." Spider-Man surprisingly tongue tied in this situation.

"RROAR!" growled a noise as Spider-Man jumps up from the upcoming figure that slashed a part of his costume. It was a humanoid Puma man with a golden fur, yellow eyes with one scarred, wears a red unitard with a tribal necklace, and golden bands on his arms and legs.

"Something tells me that you're the Puma." Spidey said sarcastically.

"Enough!" shout a booming voice as the lights are all flickered out. Spider-Man and Gibbon looks up to see up at the rails above the sewer hole, was a man wearing a white lab coat, but he wears a black and golden Egyptian Jackal mask to cover his identity. "Gibbon, I see that you have lead an intruder into our base."

"That's because Gibbon tired of Jackal taking Gibbon's humanity!" Gibbon snarled as he is suddenly collared by a man wearing a yellow sweater vest, with a fly-like head.

"Thizzzz shock collar will contain bzzzzz you!" The Human Fly said.

"Let him go!" Spider-Man demands as he shoots his web towards Gibbon, but his web is blocked by a humanoid rat man jumping on top of him. "Giant rat! Giant rat!" Spidey yelled in panic as the giant ratman crawled all over him and gets him off, as Spider-Man finds a shock collar around his neck.

"Thank you, Vermin and Human Fly, for containing the enemy and the traitor." Jackal said as he grins underneath his mask.

"Why are you doing this?!" Spider-Man demands the masked scientist "Experimenting on these people is just wrong!"

"Evolution, Arachnid." Jackal states as he walks down the stairs from the rails, as he walks down towards the sewer hole "The key for humanity's survival is to bring in new treatments to cure many types of diseases and cancer. Animal DNA is the key to our fragile human bodies, giving them power beyond science, and you've seen it happened. Scorpion, Rhino, Katarou, Vulture, they exist because of gene splicing! But you, Spider-Man, has all the abilities of the spider, as well as not suffering many appendages or after affects like them, making you more human, the perfect example of a super soldier!"

"Ah shucks, I'm flattered." Spider-Man quipped while looking for a way to take the collar off. "But I've read the files Gibbon gave me. Every scientist that were involved in the gene splicing experiment and you're one of them, aren't you? In fact, we've met before!" Jackal was silent as Spider-Man continued "That's right, you can't hide under that mask any longer, Dr. Samuel Register!"

Jackal narrows his eyes at Spider-Man as he presses the button, causing the arachnid to felt an electrical shock.

"I cannot wait to see what makes you tick, Spider-Man." Jackal said as he grins underneath his mask "You won't live to tell the tale of what transpires here. Take him to the lab, and Puma, make sure Gibbon is punished, severely."

"Yes, Master Jackal." Puma snarled as he knocks out Gibbon, then grabs his head to drag him to the sewer hole where Jackal's lab is.

'Don't worry, Gibbon. I've made some counter measures.' Spider-Man thought as he presses something in between his fingers 'Toni, hope my tracker that I've installed on the tips of my finger gloves works.'

At NYPD office, Toni was just having a cup of joe until she looks at her phone. It pops up her GPS system as a spider symbol pinpoints the location to the sewers.

"Spider-Man!?" Toni exclaimed, thanking god that Gar makes something in case he's in trouble. "Captain Kovar! We have an emergency!"

"What is it?" The Captain inquired.

"Spider-Man is in danger!" Toni state panickily as she showed her Captain her phone. "He has a built-in GPS in his suit and he just activated it!"

"And this is important why?" The Captain questioned the woman.

"It means he's in danger! and that he's trusting us to save him!" Toni informed her superior.

The Police Captain looked at the phone and then the Police woman before he sighed. "Do it. Send a couple squad cars."

"Yes, Sir!" Toni saluted to her Captain.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man is strapped on a table, trying to struggle out. Jackal is there next to him holding a dissect knife.

"Don't I need anesthesia for this?" Spider-Man asked.

"You won't need it once you're dead." Jackal claims as suddenly, he is kicked the dissector knife away from him. "You insolent bastard!"

"Yeah, well..." Spider-Man push himself out of the straps, using his strength to break his bonds as finally got out of his straps freeing himself. "I'm just that amazing." he adds as he shoots his web towards Jackal's mask, grabbing it as he kicks Jackal to the lab equipment, revealing to be Dr. Register. "I knew it was you, Dr. Register!"

"Yes, but you won't live to tell the tale!" Dr. Register said as he snaps his fingers.

Suddenly Spider-Man felt his back scratched as he backs away from Puma, who alongside Squid, Human Fly, and Vermin surrounding Spider-Man. 'Great, it's Squidward and his Legion of Losers. Time to fight as the police comes, Gar.' he thought as he put on a stance "It's on like Donkey Kong."

"Prepare to bbbbzzzz die!" Human Fly growled at the red and blue costumed teenager.

But the human/insect hybrid dropped to the ground, knocked out as the human/monkey hybrid used his bo-staff to bash his former fellow captive on the head.

"What!? He's free!?" Register exclaimed, backing away from the fight. "Kill him! He no longer matters to my experiments!"

"Gladly!" Squid smirked as he lashed out with his tentacles, barely missing his targets as they jumped out of the way.

"He should be in the old docks!" Toni stated as he watched her car get closer and closer to their destination. "If it wasn't for the GPS, then it would take us hours upon hours to find Spider-Man."

"I think we found them!" Another officer spoke up as he saw what looked like a fountain of oil shoot up into the air. "That must be them!"

'Hope you're okay, Gar!' Toni thought as she and saw her partner carrying a large techno advanced gun "What is that?"

"This? It's one of those State of the Art new weapons to capture super criminals. Thanks for the extra funding from the Mayor, we can capture those super criminals alongside with Spider-Man!" Isaac states as he set the gun to stun mode. "The whole SWAT Team has these babies."

"Gotta thank the ol' Mayor for that." Toni said as she prepares to head down to their destination.

Spider-Man and Gibbon are side by side, facing off the four mutated villains Squid, Puma, a recovered Human-Fly, and Jackal.

"Attack!" Dr. Register declares as the three charge at them.

Puma pounces at Spider-Man who shoots his webbing towards Puma's eyes. The feline/human hybrid was blind as Spider-Man punches him in the stomach to launch him to the wall. Then Squid's tentacles wrapped Spidey around his neck and lifts him up, preparing to bash his head to the roof until Gibbon slams his bo staff at Squid.

"I've grown tired of you, Monkey boy!" Squid gurgled through his mouthless face.

"Question, how do you talk like that without a mouth?" Spider-Man asked while struggling to get the tentacle off him. Gibbon helps by slamming the tentacle with the bo staff, causing the Squid to cried out in pain. "You know, I think you and Doc Ock would make a lovely couple." he quipped, as the Human Fly flew towards him along with Puma. "Gibbon, I think I know how to trap them!"

"Proceed!" Gibbon said as he fights off against Squid.

"Prepare to be hunted, Spider-Man!" Puma growled as he swipes his claws at Spider-Man, who dodges and shoots his web at Human Fly's wings and swings him towards the cat man. Then Spidey taps onto his web shooters and suddenly, it spread out a large web net, covering Puma, Human Fly, and Squid while Gibbon luckily dodges the web.

"I can't move!" Squid shouts while being tangled by the sticky web.

"I have me my arch-bzzzzzzzt-nemesis!" Human Fly shouts while Puma couldn't move an inch.

"Squid, Puma, and Fly are trapped now!" Gibbon declares.

"And that's the power of team work!" Spider-Man states raising his hand up at Gibbon, who looks confused "Come on, don't tell me you forgot to hi five?"

"This isn't over!" Register told as he held his gun up aiming at Spider-Man.

"Don't!" Gibbon shouts as he pushes Spider-Man as Register pulled the trigger.

BANG! Echoed through the sewers, as Gibbon coughs blood.

"NOO!" Spider-Man shouts as he sees Gibbon fall onto the floor, oozing blood from his chest. "Gibbon!"

Gibbon couldn't give a verbal response as he was too busy chocking on his own blood, the light fading from his eyes.

"No! Stay with me, Gibbon!" Spider-Man pleaded as his senses alerted him that he was being surrounded, but he was too distracted to notice.

But suddenly the walls of the building were blown away and several armed police officers came through with their guns drawn. "NYPD! Put your hands in the air!"

"Leave the Spider alone!" Toni warned as they all noticed that the masked vigilante was softly crying. "Get on your knees and give up!" Her tone was cold and unforgiving.

"This isn't over!" Jackal states as he drops his gun and escapes into one drainer hole in the ground. The NYPD marches forth to catch him as they look down the hole with their flashlights. He was gone.

"Alright, everyone check around the perimeter. And bring these super criminals in." the Captain orders as the police grabs hold of Squid, Puma, and Human Fly and place them in restrainer cuffs and collars. The Captain also spotted Spider-Man holding Gibbon as Captain Kovar orders "And someone call an ambulance."

After what happened in the sewers, Spider-Man has given Toni and the Captain the flash drive containing files of all the illegal gene splicing experiments, including Dr. Sam Register's name. So, when the NYPD barge into his office at ECU, he was nowhere to be seen.

After that at the ECU display, where many news reporters are here at the stage in front of the six Beastials, Dr. Stone and his wife assembled to cure all of those who were victims of the illegal splicing. Grizzly, Manotaur, Kangaroo, Squid, Human Fly, and Puma. Dr. Victor press the button which transfers the gene cleansers to the Bestials as they shift and turn. Then to the crowd's surprise and shock, they all turn back to their human selves.

"As you just witnessed, folks, Dr. Victor and Sara Stone's gene cleanser has cured all of the super criminals into normal humans!" announced Lois Lane who's reporting on camera along with the camera man and Garfield who's taking pictures for the Bugle.

'Well Gibbon, you can rest now.' Garfield thought sadly as he researched Gibbon's real identity, George Nark, a well-known coal miner who has a wife and child. One day George got cancer and he needed the treatment so he went to Dr. Register and a whole bunch of scientist to help him cure him with monkey DNA. 'Now, one more loose end left. Find Jackal.'

At a base that's seems to be underwater, Jackal swims down the large pillar of a base, swimming into the entrance. When he got into the surface of the base, he is met with Dr. Octopus.

"My, my, what does my old colleague want now?" Dr. Octopus asked, seeing Jackal removing his mask.

"I have come to further my research." Register said as he digs something in his pocket "Tell me, have you ever been thinking about an army of Spider-Men?"

"Is that what I think it is?" Octopus whispered as he reached towards the small vile and took it into his hand.

"It is, Gizmo." Register smiled in triumph. "That is prime DNA from Spider-Man. Just imagine what we could do with such a sample."

Octopus look on in awe as he ravaged the vile with his calculating eyes. 'We? There won't be a "we".' The mad scientist thought.

"Now what do we do?" Register questioned.

"Now I make a new plan." Octopus smirked.

"Excuse me?" Register responded in confusion.

"There isn't an 'us'... no, there is only I." Octopus informed as he used the metal tentacles on his back and impaled the scientist through his stomach.

"W-Why?" Register's eyes were wide as he tried stay on his feet, but a tug from the tentacles brought him down to his knees and then his face hit the floor.

"I must find out what I can do with this DNA... who knows what is possible." Octopus sighed as he let his mind wander to the thousands of possibilities. "This will be my little secret, not even Lex Luthor will know."
