Epilogue
"Now remember what I told you."
"Block fast. Hit low."
"No no… no hitting low. That's dangerous."
"Isn't everything about this dangerous?"
"Yes and no. Now throw the ball to—"
"Can I tackle Tony?"
"Yes—I mean no! You're on my team!"
"Tony just give it up and let them play."
"Hold on, I got this Rogers."
Loki watched the mixed group with some amusement. Tony was trying to teach her children some sort of Midgardian game called "football". She didn't see why the name was what it was. As far as she could see, the feet were only involved in certain kicks or running. Wouldn't "handball" or "tackleball" be more appropriate?
She rolled her head to the side and cracked it gently. A cool breeze swept over her upper body as Loki fanned herself with a paper she had swiped from the tables inside. It was so warm out! Why had Tony insisted on them visiting his place in this abhorrent heat?
Loki eyed the pool nearby as the group milled about more. The water was looking more and more tempting each passing moment, but Loki did not trust the content of it. The water smelled strange and she didn't feel like being harmed by whatever additives were in it. Were they there to keep the pool clean or something?
"Can we start now?" blue eyes narrowed as they watched the man of iron. The raven-haired boy had his arms crossed in annoyance. Lokhor looked so much like Loki when she was younger. The main difference was the white streak through his hair and his eyes. He had Thor's eyes. Loki smiled.
"I don't think your sister gets it yet," Tony responded.
"I do too!" Green eyes glared defiantly.
Loki smiled at her children. Lokhor was waiting impatiently as Tony tried to explain the football rules to his sister again.
"I know all that!" she whined.
"Fine, fine," Tony sighed, "No tackling me though."
Loki's daughter pouted as Tony turned away. Golden blonde hair flicked over her shoulder as she turned sharply and lined up with the small group. Nanna certainly had inherited Thor's overly ambitious attitude.
This thought was only solidified as the Captain hiked the ball to the others on his team. Clint caught the ball and darted his way through the line. Instead of stopping the nimble agent, Tony's team fell into chaos. Nanna grabbed the man of iron and lifted him off the ground.
"Nanna, put him down," Loki ordered before the child did anything else.
"Huzzah!" Nanna threw Tony to the ground in a clatter of metal and armor. The man flailed as his suit scattered away from his body in chunks. Nanna stood over him with a giggle.
"You're on my team!" he stated.
"I think the point of this is over her head," Captain commented from the side. Clint laughed from where he had crossed their makeshift goal line. The wide grin on his face suggested that there was more to this situation than everyone knew. Had he bribed Nanna with candy again?
"Maybe you should find something else to do," Pepper commented from her seat on a long fold out chair. She was reading a thick magazine and did not seemed terribly thrilled about Tony's antics.
"What is going on here?" Thor's voice boomed over the area, "Are my eyes deceiving me or has Tony been defeated by my daughter?"
It was about time the thunderer returned. Loki was growing tired of the silly game anyway. The pattering of feet across the ground made her look over. Lokhor and Nanna had run to their father.
"Now that is assuming too much at once," Tony commented as he sat up, "She caught me off guard."
Loki rose from her spot. She turned away as the man of iron stared at her. She was wearing a Midgardian bathing suit at Thor's request, but Tony's look wasn't lustful or angry or anything one might think to stare at Loki with. It was… childish curiosity?
"Is there something you want?" she quipped irritably. Loki wanted to go inside and escape the dreadful heat.
"Well yea… uh…" Tony's odd staring was broken as he looked away and rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "I was wondering… um… that scar…?" He made a gesture to his abdomen just under his ribcage.
Loki glanced down at the large abomination that marked the area he had indicated. She flipped her hair over her shoulder as some of the others tuned into the conversation.
"What about it?" she retorted. It was the only thing marring her pale skin. That was what he was curious about?
"Yea… I've been wondering since we got out here... where'd you get it?"
Thor's expression hardened as Loki grabbed her towel and walked briskly to the glass doors that led inside. Tony seemed disappointed in her silence. Loki glanced back over her shoulder at the gathered group.
"Malekith."
"Mallet-what?"
Loki let the door close behind her. It would be the only explanation she would give.
