Derek sat and waited in the conference room waiting for the heart specialist to come and talk to him. He was praying that there was nothing wrong with Noah. All he knew was the doctor was running all kinds of tests on his tiny son. He wanted to be there but he was told that it would better if he waited. That they would come and get him. So here he sat waiting. The door opened and in walk Dr. Costas, the pediatrician and another doctor. They sat down across from Derek.
"Hi Derek this is Dr. Baker, the heart specialist."
Derek nodded. "Dr. Baker is there something wrong with my son?"
"Dr. Costas consulted with me about what happened early this morning and asked me to come and check Noah out. I listened to his heart. I gave him an ultrasound to see his heart. I'm happy to say that I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, that is to say that his heart is normal. He does have some trouble regulating his body temp but that is normal in a preemie and that is what is he is."
"Any questions?"
"What if this happens again?"
"The nurses will monitor Noah and I will be coming by to see at least once a day and if anything happens they will call me. I will tell you, for being this small at thirty-five weeks' gestation, he is a strong baby. His cry is a little weak but that maybe because he has trouble breathing. As the days go by he should get stronger."
"Thank you doctor."
He left the conference room and went in search of Hotch. He found him and Spence in the cafeteria. They found a small table in the corner and sat.
"Any news?"
"Well she hasn't turned up at Tamara's and she hasn't turned the rental in. My guess is she's hiding, scared somewhere."
"I still can't believe she might have something to do with this."
"We don't know anything yet Derek?" Spence said.
"How are the twins?" hotch asked.
"Holding their own. Noah doesn't have a heart problem but they are going to continue to monitor him."
"That's good news."
"It is. Pen still hasn't woken up and I'm starting to get worried."
"Her body went through a traumatic experience, Derek. She just needs time and she will wake up."
"I don't know how I am going to tell her that she won't be able to have any more babies. She wanted to have a girl later."
"Don't think about that right now. Take it one day at a time." Spence said.
Derek spent his day splitting his time up between the twins and Pen. He would go feed them and spend time with them. They still weren't drinking from a bottle but it had only been a day. It was getting late and Hotch had brought him dinner and he was sitting by Pen's bed. Derek was holding her hand. He was staring at the floor when he felt her move her hand. Two seconds later she moaned. He stood up and leaned over her.
"Pen baby, wake up. I'm here baby." She tried opening her eyes." Can you hear me baby?"
"Yes." She barely whispered.
"Try to open your eyes baby"
"Too bright." She whispered.
He pulled the cord and the room dimmed. He them hit the nurses button and when they answered he told them she was awake. She struggled to open her eyes but finally did.
"Thank God, baby you had me scared."
"Where am I?"
Derek didn't get a chance to answer when Dr. Addison came in. she walked to the bed.
"It is nice to see you awake, Penelope." She said checking her over. "How do you feel?"
"Thirsty and sore." She moved her hand to her stomach expecting to find her babies. "What happened? Where are my babies? Derek?" she whispered."
"Calm down baby the boys are here and they are do well." He said brushing the hair from her face. "Look at me. What do you remember?"
"I don't know. Everything is fuzzy right now." She said. "Where are the boys?"
"In the NICU."
"Why, why are they there Derek?"
"Listen to me baby girl, I will tell you everything but you need to calm down."
"You just woke up Penelope and I know you are worried about your boys but if you don't calm down then I will have to give you something and I don't want to do it."
She nodded and Derek took her hand. "I will tell you about the boys. Hunter was born first and weighed a little over five pounds. Noah was a little over four pounds. Neither one of them have the sucking instinct so they are in the NICU and have feeding tubes. Noah also has trouble breathing so he has a breathing tube and has a small problem maintaining his body temp. they are both in a warmer and hooked up to machines monitoring them"
"No, no, no. my poor babies." She sobbed.
"Pen baby they are strong boys they will overcome this."
"I know but they are so small."
"Do you want to see pictures of them?" she nodded and he showed her his phone.
"Oh they're beautiful. Look at all that hair." She whispered and touched the screen. "Hunter."
"How do you know that is Hunter?"
"I just know." She said. "He looks like you."
He showed her more pictures of Hunter and them showed her Noah.
"He looks so small in that bed. Oh Derek. He's a little lighter than Hunter but has darker hair. He looks like you too."
"Since Derek has told you about the boys let me check you a little better. Derek can you step out for just a few minutes?"
He leaned over and kissed her. "I'll be right outside."
"Ok."
He went out the door and leaned against the wall. JJ and Emily came up to him.
"Derek what wrong?"
"Pen woke up and they are checking her."
"Does she know about the twins?"
"I showed her pictures and she knows they are in the NICU. She's emotional. I can understand that."
"Pen is a very strong woman. She'll get through this. She has you and the twins."
"I know." He said. "She doesn't remember what happened. She said it's all fuzzy."
"Maybe that is a good thing." Emily said. "The last thing she needs is to blame herself. You know Pen, that is exactly what she will do."
"Derek we came to tell you that Hotch and the others are at the police station. They have your sister."
He straightened up. "Where did you find her?"
"Turning in her rental. She was getting ready to board a plane."
"I can't leave right now."
"They can keep her for twenty-four hours."
"Let her stew for a while."
The doctor came out and spoke to Derek. "Everything looks good. Her incision looks good for being only a day old. I didn't tell her about the hysterectomy. That can wait a few days. She's too emotional right now. She wants to see the twins but I told her to wait until tomorrow and we'll see how she feels. The nurses are going to start getting her up and walking. The sooner the better. Just keep her calm as much as possible. It might help if she has some pictures to look at. The nurses have a camera that gives instant pictures. Go ask for it and take some pictures and bring them to her. That might help. I asked the nurses to let me know if anything pops up."
Derek thanked Dr. Addison and went back to Pen. She had her eyes closed. "Pen baby are you up for visitors."
Emily walked in first followed by JJ. "How are you feeling Pen?"
"Tired and sore." She said. "Have you seen my boys?"
"No Derek wanted you to be the first one to see them."
She smiled weakly at Derek. "Show them."
He showed them the pictures and JJ was the first to look. "Aww they are so beautiful."
"Look at that hair." Emily said. "They look like you Derek."
"I can see a little bit of Pen but not much."
"What are their names?"
"Hunter Alexander and Noah Austin."
"Nice."
"Can you girls stay with Pen while I go feed the boys?" Pen looked confused. "I feed them formula through the feeding tube."
"Oh ok. Give them a kiss for me and tell them that I love them."
"I always do when I see them."
Derek was heading back to Pen when he saw his mother and Sarah walking toward her room. He walked faster to stop them before they reached the door. he made it just in time.
"What are you doing here?"
They turned and Fran looked shocked to see the look on her son's face. "We came to see Pen and the boys."
"You can't go in there."
"Why not? Are you still mad at me? Don't you think it's time that you forgive your sister and me?"
"I'm sorry Sarah but you can't go in right now." He said. "Wait for me in the waiting room please."
He went into the room without bothering to see if they did what he said. She was sleeping. He motioned for the girls to follow him.
"I need your help. My momma and Sarah showed up and I barely managed to stop them from coming in here. I'm going to the police station. When Pen wakes up and I'm not back tell her I went to get her bags and the boys."
"You taking your mom with you."
"Yes. I want her to hear whatever she has to say."
He went to the waiting room and told his mother to follow him. They were confused but did what he asked. When they stopped at the police station, they didn't know what to think. They walked in behind Derek and saw Hotch, Rossi and Spence. Hotch pulled him to the side.
"Ae you sure you want to do this?"
He closed his eyes. "Yes."
He showed them into a room. "What is going on Derek? Why are we here?" she stopped when she saw her daughter sitting in the next room. "Why is Des here? What is going on?"
Derek never said a word and watched Hotch and Spence enter the room. They sat down across from her. Hotch started the interrogation.
"Why am I here?"
"How long have you been here in Virginia?"
"A few days, why?"
"Why are you here?"
"I'm visiting a friend."
"What is your friends name?"
"I don't need to tell you that."
He pulled out a picture. "is this car you rented while you were here?"
"It looks like it."
"You were seen on Derek's street. What were you doing there?"
"I wasn't on Derek's street."
"We have the officer that saw you parked there and ran the plates. They come back to rental place and that was rented to you. So again why were you at Derek's."
"I wanted to see if I could catch him and talk to him."
"Even though you knew he wanted you to stay away from them."
"I don't think it's fair she keeps him away from us."
"Did you approach the house?"
"No and I left when I spotted the cop."
"At approximately four thirty yesterday afternoon, someone broke into Derek's house and pushed Penelope down the stairs." Spence said.
"What? That wasn't me. I didn't go into his house."
"You were there at the same time and were seen leaving minutes later."
Fran glimpsed at Derek. His face was set with anger. "You don't think she did that." He didn't answer, just stared ahead.
"Were you alone when you went in."
"I told you I didn't go in."
"There is no secret you don't like Ms. Garcia." Hotch said.
"No I don't like her. She isn't good enough for Derek. She trapped him with that pregnancy."
"Why do you hate her so much?"
"She stole Derek from another woman."
"What does it matter to you who Derek is involved with?"
"I told you she isn't good enough for him." She said. "You said she fell. What happened to her?"
"She almost died." In the other room Derek balled his hands into fists.
"So she is alive."
"What you should be worried about is that we can place you right outside their house at the time of the accident. It doesn't look good for you Ms. Morgan."
They continued to talk to her but Fran was pleading with Derek. "She didn't do this. You know that."
"What is she doing here? She doesn't have any friends here but Tamara. All I know is Pen was pushed down the stairs. She almost lost her life and the lives of my sons. What was she doing at my house?"
"I can't believe you think your sister is capable if this."
"I didn't think she was either but now." He turned back to the window. "Look at her she has a smug look on her face. You are going to tell me that she didn't do this.
"Right now all the evidence points to you and we can arrest you for attempted murder of Ms. Garcia and her children."
"What? You can't arrest me. I didn't do anything but sit outside the house. I told you I was waiting for Derek. I wanted to talk to him."
"Who was the friend you were visiting?"
"It was just a friend."
"I need a name."
"I know what you are trying to do. You are trying to scare me but it won't work. I didn't go into that house and I didn't push anyone down the stairs. You can ask the cop. I left as soon as I saw him."
Hotch and Spence came out of the room and Derek stepped out. Fran stopped him. "She didn't do this. She is your sister for Gods sakes."
"I don't have sister." He said walking out the door.
Fran looked back at the window. "What have you done Des? What have you done?'
They went into another room and started talking. "I believe she was there but didn't go into your house."
"I think this was a two-person job and she was just the driver." Rossi said.
"she left when she saw the cop."
"What if she came back and picked up whoever was with her." Spence said.
"What if it wasn't Tamara but someone else?" Hotch said.
"I know she was there. I can feel it in my gut. Maybe she didn't push her but she was there as an accessory and I want her to pay for whatever role she had in this."
"Are you sure that is what you want? She is your sister." Rossi said.
"That isn't my sister. My sister would never have acted or done something like this." He said. "I need to get back to the hospital. I need to swing by my place first. Is it ok if I go?"
"the police are done with it. there wasn't much evidence that they found."
"Take my family to a hotel. The last thing I need is for Pen to get upset that my momma is here. She's already emotional as it is. She wants to see her sons."
"How is she doing?"
"She's tired and sore. Wants to see the boys. They told her maybe tomorrow. Depends on how she is." He said. "I did take some pictures and I'll give them to her later."
"We'll be by later. Give her our best."
"I will."
He left and knew his mother was standing there staring at him. He just couldn't talk to her at that moment. He never would have thought Des was capable of something like this. Even after everything his mother heard, she was still defending her. He knew it was probably wrong to act that way with her but he had so many emotions running through him. With everything that was about to happen, he knew he needed to be strong for his family. That is all that matter to him; Pen and the boys.
He sat parked in the driveway contemplating on whether he should go in or not. This was the place where he found Pen laying on the floor bleeding. He didn't even know if he wanted to continue to live here. He wasn't sure Pen would want to. If she didn't he would look for another place for them. He got out of the truck and went to the front door. unlocking the door, h pushed it open and stepped through. The first thing he notice that he smelled bleach. Someone had cleaned up. He walked in further and saw there was no blood. The floor was spotless. He went up the stairs into their room. He saw the bags sitting on the chair; one was hers and other was for the twins. She had outfits that she wanted them to wear home but now he didn't know when that would be. He went to the nursery and grabbed the two lambs that Pen had placed in their crib. He wanted them to have something of home. Waking through the house he made sure that everything was locked. He was just locking the door when he heard his name.
"Derek."
"Mr. Carson."
"How is Penelope?"
"She is doing well. She had the babies, boys."
"Are they doing ok? I know they are early."
"They have some problems but nothing they can't push through."
"Have they caught the people that broke into the house?"
"What do you mean people?"
"Well I was on my way out, I went to my daughters for the night, and I saw two women get out of a car. I thought it was strange that they went around the back. I thought you knew they were there. It wasn't until I got back a few hours ago that Mildred next door told me what happened."
"Hold on one second." He pulled out his phone and dialed. "Hotch, I have my neighbor, Mr. Carson and he has some information that you need to hear." He listened. "I need to get back to the hospital." He nodded. "I will." He hung up.
"Mr. Carson, can you go to the police station and ask for Agent Hotcher and tell him what you know. I would go with you but I need to get back to Pen."
"Don't worry about it Derek. I can make it on my own. You give my best to Pen and tell her I will visit soon."
"I will and she will be happy to see you."
Derek watched his neighbor walk back across the street. He slipped into the truck and drove off. He thought about what this new information would mean for his family. There would be no coming back from this for anyone.
He walked into Pen's room and saw that she was eating what looked like soup. She was making faces.
"What's wrong baby girl?"
"I have to eat these liquids before I can eat real food and it isn't cutting it."
He kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry sweetheart."
"It's ok." She said. "What took you so long?"
"I went to get the bags."
"It took a while."
"I'm sorry." He said. "Where are the girls?"
"They got a call and left."
"I have a surprise for you." He drew the pictures out of his pocket and handed them to her. "I took these when I went to feed them." She stared at the pictures, touching each one. "They have your eyes. They're lighter than mine. I think Noah has your nose."
She sniffled. "There are too little to tell but they do look like you. Tell me how they are really doing."
"They are doing really good. Last night Noah heart rate dipped really low and they called in a heart specialist."
"Oh God." She started crying.
"Hush baby girl and listen. He's fine. The specialist didn't find anything wrong with his heart but they are going to continue to monitor him."
"Ok that's good news. You feed them?"
"They have feeding tube because they don't have the instinct to suck on a bottle. So when it's time to for them to eat I go down there and try to give them a bottle. They won't take it so the nurses showed me how to put the milk in a syringe and feed them through the tube."
"Have you held them?"
"Yes and you will too as soon as you can go see them."
"I want to so bad, Derek. I hope I get to see them tomorrow. I love the procures but it isn't the same."
"I brought something we could put in their warmers." Going to the bags he pulled out the lambs. She took them from him.
"The lambs."
"I thought they needed something of home."
A knock sounded on the door and Hotch peeked his head in. "Can we come in?"
"Sure." Pen said. "I was wondering when you all would come by."
After all the hugs and congratulations and looking at pictures the conversation settled down. It was mostly about the babies. They oohed and awed over the pictures and commenting on what she already knew; they looked more like Derek than her; which was ok with her.
