Zekrom stood against the Oak Corral gate, looking over the quaint landscape of Pallet Town. The Deep Black Pokemon that represented ideals had been standing in that spot for the better part of an hour, pondering the events of the previous week. After the encounter with Red, Ash had been mostly off by himself, and when he wasn't by himself, he and Zekrom were discussing what all Ash was thinking. Despite all of internal emotional turmoil, Ash had decided to challenge the Kalos Elite 4, hoping that intense battling would get his mind off of the Coalition.
"The world is jumping through hoops, and the worst is yet to come, I fear." muttered Zekrom. He closed his eyes. "Reshiram, my sister, and Kyurem, my brother...I'll always be fighting for you. I'll make sure that the Coalition does not triumph. That is my ideal."
"Hey Zek! What are you doing?" shouted a voice from Zekrom's left. Zekrom watched as Suicune approached him, her cyan clothing gleaming in the mid-day light. Zekrom would never admit it, but he had always kind of liked Suicune. She was wise, beautiful, and all around enjoyable to be around. However, she always seemed distant, like the North Wind she represents.
"Oh...nothing." said Zekrom, snapping out of his trance. "Just enjoying the atmosphere."
Suicune sighed in agreement. "I can see why Ash loves it here so much. This little town is so quaint and quiet. I could see myself living here someday. By the way, Ash told me to give you a message. Instead of all of us going to Kalos for his Elite Four challenge, they are coming here. The first member should be arriving by the end of the week."
"Finally. I was starting to get annoyed with the long wait. I'm ready to knock some heads and show them the true power of ideals." said Zekrom, cracking his knuckles.
"Oh Zek...always the fighter." sighed Suicune. "Come on. Let's see what your trainer wants us all for."
(Oak Corral)
Ash stood with his eyes closed, the wind rustling through his raven hair. All of his friends, their Pokemon, along with his Pokemon stood behind him, waiting for him to say something.
"He calls us all here in a hurry, and we find him standing in place like a Rock-type." muttered Mairin. "What's he doing?"
"Probably thinking." muttered back Tracey. "This is the chance of a lifetime for him, so I think he's running through his mental checklist before his battle tomorrow."
"I'd hate to see what would happen if he were disturbed while he's in such a focused state of mind." said Clemont nonchalantly.
"HELLO?!" called a voice from nearby. "ANYONE HOME?!" Ash's eyes snapped open in plot-convenient annoyance.
"Back here!" he shouted back, slightly irritated. A moment later, a young man ran around and stopped before the group. He looked slightly younger than Ash, so maybe 16. He wore a red t-shirt underneath a black jacket. He wore ripped blue jeans and sandals, giving him the appearance of a southerner in the cool stretches of autumn. Standing next to him was a Samurott, its horn gleaming in the mid-morning sun. "Is Professor Oak here, by any chance?"
"He had to run over to Saffron City for the day." replied Alain. "Maybe we can help you.
"Oh no! That means he forgot!" shouted the man, shaking his head in disbelief. "Why does this always happen to me? He was supposed to have a meeting with me today!"
"Oh! That must mean you're Alexander!" realized Tracey, cupping a fist with his other hand. "That's right! Professor Oak left a message for you! He said that the area near Mt. Moon you requested information about has yielded no findings. It appears that the area that was once full of them has finally run dry."
"What?! No way!" Alexander slumped to the ground. "Now I'll never get one."
"Excuse me, but what are you talking about?" asked Bonnie.
"Pokemon Fossils, of course!" exclaimed Alexander, a look of glee on his face. "Ever since I became a Pokemon Trainer, I've always wanted an ancient Pokemon! I started by looking for an Anorith Fossil during my time in Hoenn, but I never succeeded, just like how I never beat Glacia of the Elite Four after winning the Hoenn League. At age 12, I never found a Shieldon fossil, and I lost to Cynthia after winning the Sinnoh League. At age 13, I never got an Archen fossil, and I lost to Alder after winning the Unova League. And then I never found a Tyrunt fossil while in Johto, and I lost in the Johto League finals." Alexander sighed. "It's been one bitter setback after another in my journey. But I'm not giving up! I spent 18 months training my team, and now, I'm ready to fulfill my lifelong dream of owning a Tyrantrum!"
"That's pretty cool." said Ash. "Have you ever seen a Tyrantrum before?"
"Once, when I was a little kid. Since then, I've always dreamed of having a Tyrantrum as my newest member of my twenty-six Pokemon team, but now it looks like I'll have to give up…" said Alexander.
"I've got an idea!" said Ash. He bellowed out, "HEY TYRANTRUM, COME ON OVER HERE!" Right on cue, Ash's prehistoric Pokemon emerged from the trees, his stubby little arms waving as he ran. "Hey big guy, this is Alexander, and he's always dreamed of seeing a Tyrantrum!"
"Oh wow!" exclaimed Alexander, snapping out of his transfixed stupor. He took out a notebook and began documenting every little thing about Tyrantrum, making the Despot Pokemon sweatdrop.
"Uh Ash...I don't like how he's jotting down every little thing about me. It's kind of creepy." muttered Tyrantrum.
"It is a little strange." admitted Clemont. Alexander dropped his notepad all of sudden. He began stammering incomprehensibly, much to the confusion of all the others.
"A TALKING TYRANTRUM?!" screamed Alexander giddily. "That's it! Ash, I'd like to challenge you to a battle for Tyrantrum please!"
"HUH?!" said everyone at the same time.
"Five, four, three, two! Don't look dumb, I'm talking to you!" rhapsodied Alexander, pointing at Ash.
As this was going on, Zekrom narrowed his eyes at Alexander, and the Deep Black Dragon-type approached Alexander. Zekrom said, "Young man, what are your ideals?"
"Huh?" was all Alexander managed to reply.
"So...you do not know...how pitiful." muttered Zekrom. "If you do not know your ideals, than you have no right to claim a battle for another man's Pokemon! And to re-emphasize that statement so that you understand my words even more, Ash, accept his challenge."
"Zek...are you sure about this?" asked Ash.
"More than anything in my life. Show him the power of ideals." stated Zekrom, giving Ash a wink. Some sort of mental understanding passed through the two of them, for Ash nodded.
"Alright Alexander, I accept your challenge. Just be prepared to lose!" pointed Ash.
(5 Minutes Later)
"The Pokemon battle between Ash of Pallet Town and Alexander of Riyado Town will now begin!" announced Meyer. "Both sides will only use one Pokemon, and when either side's Pokemon is unable to continue, that battle will be over! No substitutions are permitted whatsoever. Trainers, reveal your Pokemon!"
"I can't believe that this is actually taking place." grumbled Tyrantrum. "Ash better win this. I don't want to leave you guys!"
"Don't worry Tyrantrum." said Bonnie, Dedenne jumping on Tyrantrum's shoulder. "Ash won't let anything happen to you!"
"Alright Aggron, let's show 'em what you're made of!" Out of Alexander's PokeBall emerged a gargantuan Aggron, it's iron body reflecting the mid-day light. Before Ash could do anything, Alexander revealed a Key Stone, which was attached to the root of a fossil tooth necklace. "Ancient light of Mega Evolution, illuminate yourself now!" The Key Stone flashed, as did Aggron's Aggronite. The lights of the two stones connected and turned white, and Aggron was surrounded in a multi-colored glow. "Aggron, Mega Evolve!" Mega Aggron roared, the Mega Evolution symbol flashing, revealing his new form.
'Mega Aggron huh?' thought Ash. 'It's now just a Steel-type, and it's got the ability Filter, so that, combined with Aggron's high defensive stats mean that it's going to be tough to dish out the damage on this thing. But I've got a surprise for them! Time to show them the ideals!' Ash pointed at Zek and said, "I choose you!" Zekrom nodded in approval, and walked over in front of Ash.
Alexander's mouth dropped like a rock, while Mega Aggron sweatdropped. "This is a POKEMON battle, and your friend IS NOT A POKEMON!" shouted Alexander, thinking Ash was playing him for a fool.
"But I am one…" said Zekrom, his voice echoing through the field. Zekrom's eyes glowed an intense electric blue, as did his body. He began to lose human definition, and his body grew to massive proportions. His back sprouted massive wings, and his lower back had a tail jutt out of it. Zekrom let loose a massive roar as the electricity faded, revealing his true form as the Deep Black Pokemon of ideals. "Guided by ideals, fighting with the speed of lightning and the roar of thunder, I am Zekrom!"
Alexander's mouth dropped open at seeing one of the legendary Pokemon of the Unova region floating in front of him. He shook off his surprise and then shouted, "If you trying to intimidate me, it won't work! Mega Aggron, use Metal Claw!" Mega Aggron glowed with a silvery sheen, as the Steel-type ran at Zekrom.
"Block it." said Ash. Zekrom simply raised a claw, and let the Metal Claw rake off it, leaving no scratches at all. "Now use Dragon Breath!" While Mega Aggron was still up close and personable, Zekrom blasted it with a stream of blue Dragon-type energy. While not being very effective, it still pushed Mega Aggron back quite a ways.
"Use Smack Down!" said Alexander. Mega Aggron fired a rusty-orange at Zekrom, who simply batted it away with one of his wings.
"Zekrom's living up to his reputation as a legendary alright." commented Zygarde.
"Am I sensing some Dragon-type to Dragon-type jealousy going on here?" teased Heatran.
"Not really. Not only do I have a type-advantage over him as a Ground-type, but I am much better looking." said Zygarde pridefully.
"Well Suicune doesn't think so…" muttered Giratina haughtily. Zygarde and Heatran turned to see that Suicune had a blush on her flawless features, and her gaze was pointed at Zekrom's hulking frame.
"Zen Headbutt!" said Ash. Zekrom flew up, then back down while surrounded in a cosmic light.
"Intercept with Dragon Rush!" countered Alexander, however Mega Aggron never got up into the air before Zen Headbutt sent it flying into the Oak Corral fence.
"You okay?!"called Alexander, seeing his partner lay sprawled amongst splinters of a once-fence.
"Time to finish them Ash." said Zekrom.
"You bet." complied Ash. "Use Fusion Bolt!" Zekrom roared fiercely towards the sky. All of a sudden, the sunny skies gave way to ominous thunder clouds. Zekrom's tail generator began spinning and giving off an electric-blue light. The light when onto envelop Zekrom completely, giving him an electric-blue coating of pure power.
"Time to face the true power of ideals!" roared Zekrom, frightening Alexander. Before Zekrom could electrocute Mega Aggron, however, a mechanical hand came from the sky and grabbed Tyrantrum by the chest, his arms pinned.
"What is this?!" roared Tyrantrum, before being pulled up into the air.
"What is going on here?!" shouted Alain.
"Prepare for trouble, we're back again!"
"Make it double, it's all part of our plan!"
"To protect the world from devastation!"
"To unite all the people within our nation!"
"To denounce the evils of truth and love!"
"To extend our reach to the stars above!"
"Jessie!"
"James!"
"Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!"
"Surrender now, or prepare for a fight!"
"Meowth, that's right!"
"Team Rocket!" shouted Ash, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, May, Max, and Meyer.
"Who?" asked Mairin and Alain.
"They're so nasty, they steal other people's Pokemon!" vented May. "But really, those three are just goofballs."
"Just like a twerpette to say that!" screamed Jessie.
"I have to ask, though." said Ash. "Why tell us to surrender or prepare to fight if we always fight back and then send you flying into the stratosphere?"
"Because...because!" retorted James, coming up with no better answer.
"I WON'T ALLOW THIS!" bellowed Zekrom, causing the TRio to scream in fright. "YOU PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THE ERROR OF YOUR WAYS! FACE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR EXISTENCE!" Zekrom flew up at the Meowth balloon, while still using Fusion Bolt. The sheer force of the attack allowed him to rip right through the balloon, causing it to sink faster than a Rock-type Pokemon. The TRio screamed, not at all enjoying their ride, while at the sametime, Zekrom freed Tyrantrum by slicing the mechanical hand open. The balloon basket slammed into the ground, depositing the TRio onto the ground in a heap.
"Ugh, well that didn't work. Got a backup?" raged Jessie.
"We fight! Go! Inkay, Carnivine, Yamask, Amoonguss, and Mime Jr.!" shouted James, releasing his entire troupe of Pokemon.
"Seviper, Yanmega, Gourgeist, Frillish, Woobat! It's twerp time!" added Jessie, unveiling her Pokemon lineup.
"Zekrom, use Bolt Strike on all ten of them!" shouted Ash. Zekrom descended from the sky, and smashed into all ten opponents with a massive electrical body slam, instantly knocking out all ten.
"I'm revving it up to give you my frenzied Fury Swipes!" shouted Meowth, running at Ash. Ash dodged with a backflip, using his aura abilities to enhance his reflexes. He then held out his hand, and unleashed a pulse of aura, which flung Meowth into Jessie and James, knocking all three down. But instead of blasting them off, Ash simply erected an aura prison around the TRio.
"Uh...why aren't we flying off?" questioned Jessie.
"Because I want to speak to you." said Ash.
"As do I." added Zekrom, reverting to his human form. "Why are you three doing this?"
"Because Team Rocket will rule the world one day!" replied Meowth.
"Oh sure. Your past performances are clear examples of why that will happen." retorted Zekrom sarcastically.
"You three have helped us in the past, so you're not entirely evil." reasoned Ash. "Why stay in Team Rocket when you could actually make something out of your lives? Remember that one time when you made that Salon Rouquet place? I thought you guys did a good job with that, even though you made Misty look like a clown."
"We do make good fashion designers…" agreed James.
"You helped us stop Team Galactic and Team Plasma! You've even fought members of your own team to help us!" said Ash. "Do you really WANT to spend the rest of your lives blasting off over and over?"
"I want you to listen to me closely." said Zekrom. "Alexander, you should hear this too. I used to be in a very dark place. I was ambitious and blindly pursued my goals, not caring about what happened to those around me. In my quest, I tore apart so many bonds between individuals. I ruined so many lives and separated loved ones from one another One day, however, my eyes were opened. The day I met Suicune, she taught me of the consequences of a misguided drive. So why then should any of you stake a claim to another's Pokemon? By doing that, you attempt to destroy the link between trainer and partner! You Team Rocket clowns don't seem to understand that you are ruining the lives of innocents. And Alexander, you don't seem to realize that trying to take Tyrantrum away from Ash will do no good for anyone. It will just tear more loved ones apart, forever destroying the connection you have with the ones you care for...just as I once did to Reshiram…" With the last statement, a tear slipped down Zekrom's face, and onto the grassy field.
"Oh...Zekrom..." muttered Suicune, tears of appreciation welling in her eyes.
The TRio stared at Zekrom with tears in their eyes as Ash let the aura prison dissipate. The three then looked at each other, and some sort of silent understanding passed between them, and then Jessie and James ripped off their Team Rocket uniforms, revealing normal clothes underneath. (IMPORTANT: LOOK UP THE 3RD EPISODE OF THE XY ANIME TO SEE WHEN THE THREE ARE TALKING TO GIOVANNI AT THE CAFE TO SEE WHAT JESSIE AND JAMES LOOK LIKE.)
"You're...absolutely right." muttered Jessie. "We...we...were fools…"
"How could we have been so blind to the truth?" murmured James. He then took a small communicator and pushed a button, saying into it. "Giovanni...if you can hear me, then Jessie, Meowth and quit." He then crushed the communicator in his hands.
"I was wrong too…" muttered Alexander, returning Mega Aggron to his PokeBall. "Ash...Tyrantrum...please forgive me. I don't know what I was thinking. I was just so stoked to see a talking Tyrantrum, that I kind of lost myself. I'm so sorry."
"It's fine Alexander." said Ash, shrugging off Alexander's apology.
"Twerp...I mean...Ash...we'd like to join your group. We know all about your fight with the Coalition, and we want to help you take them down." asked Meowth, extending a paw to Pikachu in truce.
Ash smiled and replied, "We'd be glad to have you three." With that, Ash and his group all shook hands with Jessie and James, while Pikachu and Meowth shook paws.
"Alexander!" shouted Tracey, emerging from the Oak Laboratory. "I just got word from Professor Oak! He wants you to meet him at Mt. Moon! Looks like that special spot you talked about wasn't completely dried of Tyrunt fossils!"
"No way!" shouted Alexander in pure glee. "I gotta get to Mt. Moon right now! It was nice meeting you all, and good luck in the future!" With that, Alexander took off faster than a speeding Bullet Punch.
"That guy needs to learn to relax." muttered Alain.
"For sure." nodded Clemont in agreement. Clemont then noticed that Ash's eyes had gained a glassy look to them. "Hey Ash, what's wrong?"
"James...did you say Giovanni a minute ago?" asked Ash quietly.
"I sure did. Why do you ask?" replied James nonchalantly.
"Giovanni...is my father's name…"
(Team Rocket HQ)
"Attention all followers of Team Rocket, I announce to you as your leader, Giovanni, that I am disbanding Team Rocket you do with your lives is your choice. I don't care." announced Giovanni to a communication device on his desk. He then stood up and activated a hologram device. "This is Coalition General Giovanni...Red...are you there?"
"I am...how are you...father?" said Red, appearing in front of his father as a transparent hologram.
"It's time we take your brother down for good. Prepare all of the Coalition grunts on my orders. We march upon Pallet Town and eliminate our greatest obstacle...Ash." said Giovanni, a small grin on his face, his body becoming surrounded by a black aura. 'Delia...you can kiss your existence goodbye as well."
Next Time. Chapter 37: It Runs in the Family
Chapter 37 Summary: Just as Ash is finally facing the Kalos Elite Four, the Coalition attacks Pallet Town. While Alain, Clemont, Mairin, Meyer, and Serena fight fierce opponents, Ray discovers a horrifying revelation about the Coalition. But in the midst of it all, Ash clashes with Red once again, but everything turns on its head when Ash's father returns.
