Grandma Ada and Grandpa Pierre grabbed their sons in a tight hug the moment they entered the room. Matthew and Alfred cowered under the unfamiliar people's kisses, only assured by their daddies smiling at them.
Grandma pinched Papa's cheeks.
"Ow! Mama!" he exclaimed.
"It's been so long, Francis," she cooed, keeping Matthew safe in her arms as she cuddled his papa, "Your hair is still magnifique."
Arthur felt his hair that was never as luxurious as Papa's. Grandma Ada giggled.
"So is yours, Arthur."
She felt Matthew's hair. He looked up. He was too shy to say anything. What was strange was that Alfred wasn't saying anything either. He had never seen his brother so shy.
"Your hair feels so nice. I'm sure your father cleans your hair."
Matthew nodded. Francis frowned at his two sons.
"Go on, chers. Say hello to your grandparents."
"Bonjour," Matthew greeted timidly, "I'm…sorry for seeming rude."
Grandpa arched his eyebrow. Alfred looked uncomfortable in his arms but the French elder was not about to let go of his grandson. Grandpa smiled at Matthew.
"Since you apologized for no reason, you're Matthew, right?"
"Y-Yes."
The grandparents led them to the kitchen, where a long dining table was waiting. Once in their seats, Grandma gave her grandsons some sweets. With sugar in his bloodstream, Alfred felt more confident. He told them how cool it was to fly a plane.
Matthew, meanwhile, sat quietly. Francis petted his head.
"You may not remember them but they remember you perfectly, chat," he assured.
Alfred's French was thick with a foreign accent but the grandparents could tell what he was saying. Matthew was worried if his accent would sound strange to them too. He whispered his concern to his papa.
"It will be alright. Your grandparents will find it cute. And they will never make you feel embarrassed," Francis stated.
Alfred glanced around the house that had a lot of fragile nicknacks but seemingly no toys. He frowned.
"Is there anything to play with?" he asked Grandpa Pierre.
"We still have some of your Papa's toys from when he was a boy."
For some reason, Matthew noticed that Papa tensed up after Grandpa answered. Matthew looked at Daddy to see his reaction but he was too occupied with talking to Grandma Ada to notice the exchange. She was giving him tips on hair treatment.
Alfred smiled.
"Cool! What kind of toys?"
"Well, there are legos and his fashion playset."
Arthur heard this part. He turned to his husband who was now blushing and looking away.
"You never told me you had a fashion playset," he told Francis.
"It was simply a character study," Francis defended feebly.
Arthur chuckled.
"What was it you said that one time I said you used clothes to show off? 'Just because I'm French, doesn't mean I'm obsessed with fashion,' and all this time you-"
Francis gave an evil look.
"Well, now that we're giving away each other's secrets, I can tell our sons about that stuffed bunny of yours. The one you had since you were seventeen."
Alfred gave a laugh and even Matthew produced a smile. Arthur gave Francis a look that promised he would get him back for that one.
