A/N: Sorry for being a little later than usual, but fear not for I am here. Too cheesy, sorry…Okay anyway, thank you for reading everything I wrote so far, I love you guys, enjoy.
Lily's POV
I zipped my bag and looked up when I heard James stir on the bed. It breaks my heart to have to do this, but I have to. I walk over to his side gingerly and move some hair away from his forehead and he opens his eyes slightly.
"Do you have to go?" he mutters, I take a shaky breath but force a smile, the sound of the wind blowing outside is the only company in the room.
"I won't be long." I can't do this,
"Tonight, I'll make you dinner, and you'll tell me what's bothering you okay?" He says with a slight frown, and his eyes droop closed.
"Alright big boy I have to go, take care of yourself." I lean down and place one last kiss on his forehead.
He's already asleep by the time I pull back, "I love you" I whisper
He mutters an 'I love you too' but it was unintelligible.
I grab my handbag and go out into the cold dark night, the crisp wind hits my face first, and the snow whirls my hair around me. I wrap my coat closer to my body and run to my car, when I enter I'm already shivering. I turn the heater on and enjoy the warm air hitting my face.
I start the engine, heading to the where we're supposed to meet.
Stephanie's POV
I jerk awake at the sound of my pager, I raise my head from Sirius' chest who hands me the pager sleepily. It's a 9-1-1 emergency, "Shit," I get up and look for my shoes. No time to change, I'll just have to go in my pajamas.
"Better wrap up, it's cold outside." I see Sirius curl more into the bed sheets revelling in its warmth,
"Prick" I mutter enviously but continue to add extra layers to wear.
Driving was almost impossible in the storm, it was supposed to calm by midnight but I guess not. I barely made it to the hospital in time with all the closed roads and my slow driving.
As soon as I walk in through the front doors, desperate for warmth I see usual rush of nurses and filled emergency rooms. One of the nurses runs towards me crying and saying something I can't understand through her sobs.
"Okay calm down, and tell me what happened." I raise my eyebrows in annoyance. Not only is it too early for this, I haven't had my coffee yet.
"Dr Grayson is waiting in the hallway by OR 2," she barely said in between sobs. This is ridiculous.
I rush over to find George, surely he can explain. But as soon I turn into the hallway of OR 2 I see him sitting on the floor with his head in between his knees.
"George can you explain to me what the fuck is going on?" I hate being so clueless. He looks up and his eyes are puffy and red from crying,
"It's Lily." He says and rests his head back on the wall droopily
No. No this can't be happening, I look over at the door of the OR and don't even think before storming in.
"Charge to 200" the doctor I recognize as Dr Peterson from cardiology says, Lily's body jerks at the contact with the paddles but her heart rate is still not there. I freeze in shock at the sight in front of me, time stretches and voices are muffled because all I can see is a burnt, unrecognizable body.
"Someone get Dr MacAndrew out." He orders, "charge to 300. Clear" the nurses pull me away as he attempts again to save Lily's life.
"Stephanie" George pulls me away from nurses into his arms. I hear the doctor announce the time of death at 7:04 a.m. behind me. But somehow I don't feel anything. It's like I'm watching the events of another person's life in their eyes.
"I'm sorry," Dr Peterson comes out looking crestfallen "we did everything we can." And I snap. Just like that, I snap.
"What?" I breath out "No. No this is not real," I move to the doors of the OR desperate to get back in there and see Lily. "Get up Lily" I scream as they hold me back. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME" I kick and scream. "Don't leave me here with these idiots Lily Evans." I scream desperately
"Steph, shhh it's going to be okay." George hugs me, but I shrug him off.
"NO, everything is NOT going to be okay, George. Lily get the fuck up right now…or…or I'll go in there and get you up." I get them out of my way and I walk back in the OR looking at the limp body in front of me.
"Stephanie this won't help." George says and motions to the nurses to stop.
"How are you sure it's her." I mutter looking at…the body that isn't Lily's I'm sure.
"It was in her car okay, Jesus Christ, Steph let's go." The nurse covers the body,
"Did you do any blood tests." I ask desperately
"Yes" he says in a much calmer tone "It's her Steph."
Silence
"No, no no no stop. Lily come on," tears stream down my face and my voice breaks. "You turned 30 yesterday, and you were finally happy, fucking hell you even met your soul-mate. All those years Lily where you complained and cried because of your miserable life, YOU DO NOT GET TO LEAVE WHEN IT FINALLY GETS BETTER." I scream, I scream because maybe she'll get up and tell me to shut the hell up like she always does.
But she doesn't.
James' POV
I get up and follow my usual morning routine, it's too cold and stormy outside to go for a run so I decide I'm better off without the jog today.
I dress in my usual suit and put on a thick coat before I leave. I check my watch, it's 6:45 I decided to leave earlier because of the storm if I'm going to make it to work on time.
I could barely see anything at all from all the snow, and I slowed down even more when I reached a dangerous road on the side of a tall, steep cliff. Thankfully, it isn't closed but there's been an accident and the police have closed the left lane.
I reach my pocket for my phone to call Lily and check up on her but curse when I find my pocket empty.
Dammit, I forgot the phone at home.
I look at my watch and it's already 7:30 when I reach the company. I enter the familiar white marble stone lobby and say hello to the door attendant.
As soon as I enter the elevator I press the button to the 14th floor and my office. I check the time, 7:36, and wonder if the 8 a.m. meeting is cancelled.
When the elevator doors open I see Jane, the secretary, waiting at her desk as usual with my coffee and paper.
"Thank you, Jane. What do I have for today?"
"Well the 8 a.m. meeting with the staff is rescheduled till 9, because most of the roads are closed and we're still waiting for the rest to arrive. Some of our clients from Shanghai reached out to us and want to further discuss the agreement. I've scheduled that till after lunch so Mr Black can arrive. Lastly, everyone wants to leave early today because the stop is supposedly going to progress, but everyone's too scared to ask you." She smiles sheepishly.
I take a sip of coffee and look at her for a moment, "Cancel the staff meeting, anyone who isn't here yet, call them and tell them to stay home it's not safe. Good call on the afternoon meeting, Sirius never comes early. Everyone can leave at 3, no need to be scared." I assure her.
"Thank you sir." She scribbles something down on her notebook "Anything else?" she looks up,
"Yes, can you call the Local hospital and check on Doctor Lily Evans." I ask her, and she nods before excusing herself.
I check my watch again, 8:15, before I read the paper and go through my emails when I hear Jane walk in rather abruptly.
"Mr Potter," she looks at me gravely "I just spoke with one of the doctors, they said they've been trying to contact you for the past hour. I'm so sorry-"
I run to the elevators, as soon the door closes I apparate to the hospital.
"Where's Dr Lily Evans." I demand from the first nurse I see.
"James" I hear someone call me, and I turn to Sirius looking at me grimly
"I need to see Lily" I shake my head but he grabs my arm and leads me through the hospital to the morgue section but I stop
"No, this isn't where we're supposed to be. Lily works in the cardiology unit, not here." I snap at him
He grabs me again and takes me to a room where I see Stephanie, George, and other people I don't recognize. They all look at me when we walk in,
"Where's Lily" I say calmly trying not to lose my temper because I saw Lily only 3 hours ago.
"James" Stephanie sobs and Sirius walks over to her collecting her broken figure in his arms.
"I want to see her." I shake my head not accepting this reality, but no one says anything. "I WANT TO SEE HER" I say louder
"YOU CAN'T" Stephanie answers in a tone equal to mine yet somehow more put together
"Why not?" I breath heavily
"Because she's gone," Stephanie walks over to me and hugs me tightly.
My world shatters into a million pieces in only a few minutes. They wouldn't let me see her because apparently when her car drove off the side of the cliff it caught on fire and no one could identify her.
But I don't want to think about that.
Not for a second.
Because the thought of Lily trapped in a burning car is enough to make me go crazy.
