Angel Eyes

"Punish him."

How could they ask this of me? Angels know only two punishments: eternal imprisonment or death. How could they ask me to punish Dean, to punish my brother? I take the blade from her hand, barely able to comprehend what she is asking of me. I hear Sam shout, but my brothers hold him back, just as they hold Dean still for me. I look up, meeting Dean's eyes as they flicker down toward the blade and back to me and I'm startled by what I see.

Fear. Dean is afraid. Of me. But there's something else, something beyond the fear. It's almost like he wants me to kill him, to stop him. I look down at the blade, realizing he knows what is going on, what is happening to him, but he can't stop it. He doesn't want to, but he has no choice. He wants me to save him, save everyone, but how can I kill Dean?

"When I look into your eyes, I don't see an angel staring back at me."

Perhaps Josiah was right. Maybe…maybe I'm not angel, not really. No, I ceased being an angel the moment I fell for the sake of humanity, for the Winchesters. I'm no angel, I'm no human, I'm just Castiel. And I won't stand for this, no matter what the cost.

"No. I can't."
