CHAPTER THE BEST THING EVER: RIVALSHIPPING

Seto Kaiba was not concerned with the first bang. Nor was he concerned with the second, or the third. It was the fifth that roused him from sleep. He pushed himself up from the carpet with bleary eyes, noting the indentation left by the smaller body that had previously been there.

"Yuugi?" His voice cracked and he reached for his mug, grimacing when he realized how cold the tea was. He glanced around, noting how the afternoon sun now came in at a slant. So he'd been out longer than he thought.

"Sorry." Yuugi popped up at the doorway, holding something in his hands. His flannel t-shirt sleeves were shoved up to his shoulders to escape the dusting of flour that ran up most of his arms. "I tried to be quiet."

Seto blinked a few times before shoving himself to his knees. Yuugi's version of being quiet was vastly different than his own. He was used to the clack of keys being his only companion, aside from the occasional conversation with Mokuba. He glanced at the laptop he'd barely touched since entering the other's house hours before.

He'd gotten used to the loud and unexpected noise. Yuugi wasn't exactly known for his grace, though he'd never known just how bad the problem truly was. It had sent him jumping from the couch more than once.

"What a job you did." Seto smiled softly and stood, moving to where Yuugi was. Yuugi shielded the bowl protectively.

"No. It's a surprise. You can't see." He disappeared into the kitchen, the door creaking as it shut behind him. The little things like that still surprised Seto. He was used door opening smoothly and the floorboards not making a noise beneath him.

But here the doors had a slight hang to them and the floorboards gave a welcoming creak. His favorite was the stairs. They bowed slightly under his feet. The wooden railing that ran alongside them moved under his hand.

He hummed and moved to where he'd been sleeping to pick up the blanket they'd occupied. He folded it and put it back where it belonged. That surprised him at first too. He knew where almost everything in Yuugi's home went.

Sometimes he mistakenly called this his home. Maybe it had become that. This was his place of refuge. At first, he'd come here to get closer to the man who had left him. He could see little pieces of him lingering. His clothes. Not Yuugi's. His clothes. His jewelry.

Until one day it was all gone. It had taken nearly a year, but one bright winter morning, he'd come to find none of those things present. Yuugi had gotten rid of all things Atem.

But he'd kept coming back.

He listened to Yuugi's music, and his ramblings about life, and went out to dinner with him when he suddenly got the urge to eat fast food. He loved to go to Sonic.

He moved up the stairs, enjoying each little noise they emitted. He opened Yuugi's door and crossed to the closet. He pulled out a pair of sweats and traded his jeans for them. He didn't know when the clothes had begun to accumulate there. He'd fall asleep accidentally and leave them, until it finally wasn't an accident anymore.

He folded the jeans neatly and laid them on a shelf, eyes lazy as the trailed over a picture of Yuugi's entire group of friends. That was the one thing of Atem left. Seto used to feel a stab of pain when his eyes swept over that picture, but now he felt a sense of detachment.

Atem was gone. Yuugi was not. Yuugi had needed him during those months. He doubted if he needed him now but he wasn't going to leave and find out. No, he'd grown much too attached for that.

"Food's done." Yuugi popped up at the doorway, hands now clear of flour or any other substance. He smiled brightly at Seto, full lips spreading to show his perfect rows of teeth. Sometimes Seto thought about kissing those full lips, but it would kill him if Yuugi shoved him away.

"Coming." Yuugi skipped off and Seto followed behind him, stomach giving an animalistic growl. He smelled something delicious.

He sat down at the table, eyes landing on a steaming bowl of… "What is this?" He furrowed his brow and jabbed at a little lump in the bowl with his fork.

"Chicken n' dumplings!" Yuugi grinned and nibbled on his helping, eyes bright. "I found a recipe. Eat."

Seto felt only slightly apprehensive. He'd eaten plenty of meals cooked by Yuugi, and vise versa. He sighed and popped a bite of it in his mouth, chewing with a blank expression. Yuugi nearly wriggled in his seat, waiting to be praised or shamed.

"Delicious. Like always." Seto grinned and ate more easily, taking bite after bite. Yuugi chattered about nothing in particular. He told him about the dream he'd had while he slept, ("And then I ran him over with a forklift and that's just weird because who would do that?"), about his time cooking, ("and then the pot sort of attacked me and it was like an avalanche."), and about how he looked when he slept.

"You watch me sleep?" Seto raised a brow. Yuugi flushed.

"I mean, when I can't and I happen to glance over… Anyways, it just made me notice how long your eyelashes are." He shrugged. "You're… Actually really attractive, Seto. Why haven't you started dating again?"

Well that was new. Seto blinked a few times. Did Yuugi want him out of his house? Was he tired of him? Did he find it pathetic, how much Seto relied on him? Seto looked up when he felt a soft hand pushing his hair back.

"Seto… I didn't mean… I was just wondering. You look so pale now. I'm sorry." Yuugi ran his fingers through chestnut strands once more. "You need a haircut."

He turned and moved to the sink and just like that, the mood diminished. Seto pulled himself out of his darker thoughts as Yuugi cleaned up their dinner. He wanted to answer him, but the time had passed. He didn't know if he'd be able to explain why he didn't date anyone else anyways.

He stared down at the table as he imagined all the ways his confession could go wrong. Yuugi could be horrified. Yuugi could think he only wanted him because of his likeness to Atem.

But there was hardly any likeness at all. Aside from their looks, they were different. Yuugi's body held dips and curves and lovely little soft patches of skin that Seto so seldom got to brush his hand across. Yuugi's eyes weren't a feral shade of red, but instead a deep color that changed with his mood or the color he wore. His lips were bright all on their own and they never stopped smiling. So he supposed even in looks they were not the same.

But personality… Yuugi was so kind. He was trusting, to the point of near foolishness. But it was sweet and endearing. Yuugi was easily frustrated, while Atem had been calm and collected. The little noises of frustration that Yuugi would give off when he couldn't get something open, or get passed a level were like Seto's own personal music, written especially with him in mind.

"You're thinking." Yuugi was perched on his knee, leaving Seto to wonder just when he'd gotten there. He wanted to point out that typically, male friends didn't act this way towards each other. But Yuugi wasn't typical. He loved contact, something else that had taken some getting used to.

Seto wrapped his hand around Yuugi's small hipbone. "Yes." He didn't elaborate. Yuugi looked him in the eyes with an intense expression. "What?"

Yuugi shook his head and traced his nose. He was so delicate. "You're stressing over something. Is it me?"

Seto blinked. "How did y-"

"Your pupils dilated. You're attracted to me and don't know how to deal with it. Am I close?" Yuugi's lips quirked up. He'd forgotten how smart the boy was. Seto pressed his lips together and nodded. Yuugi sighed.

"I watched your eyes when I brought up the conversation earlier. They kept retracting. You were panicking. When they'd land on me, they dilated. It's a simple read." Yuugi's palms moved down to his neck, where they massaged gently. Seto's breath hitched. He'd gotten all that from his eyes?

"And now your face is flushed… a sign of want." Yuugi shifted and rested a leg on either side of Seto. The manufactured rips in Yuugi's jeans spread to show smooth thighs. Seto swallowed as he nodded.

"Your hands itch to touch me, don't they, Seto?" Yuugi's breath was hot against his ear. His hand twitched in response. What side of Yuugi was this? An unexpected and rare one, he was certain. But it shot arousal through him.

His hot breath fell on Seto's other ear as he whispered, "I know about your dreams."

Seto moaned quietly. Oh, gods. The dreams. The dreams had been of his nights with Atem at first. Then the face had begun to soften and the cries become sweeter. Seto hadn't paid it much mind upon waking.

"You talk in your sleep." Yuugi's lips brushed from his ear to his collarbone and Seto broke. He slammed the other into the table, breathing forced. Yuugi blinked innocently as Seto struggled with the need to ravish him. He couldn't hurt him. He could never afford to hurt him.

He closed his eyes for a moment. Yuugi, apparently displeased, slid a leg between his thighs. Seto bit his tongue. "Shit…" He moaned as the leg moved back and forth. Yuugi pushed himself further up the table until his legs no longer dangled and Seto followed. Yuugi pushed him on his back, straddling one thigh.

"Yuugi…" Seto swallowed and gripped his hips as Yuugi began to slide his hips against the limb. Yuugi parted his lips, a low moan slipping. Seto's body was on fire. Yuugi's hands felt like ice as they slid over his chest and abs. When had his shirt gone?

Yuugi let his shirt be taken and tossed. He let Seto touch his soft skin. Seto breathed out, unsure. This was too quick. He was dreaming. There was no way.

"Find out how real this is." Yuugi laid down and parted his legs, the bulge in his jeans welcomed Seto. Seto moaned and rolled between the parted thighs, undressing the both of them lovingly. He prepared Yuugi slowly, still unsure if he was a virgin or not. He didn't twist away from the intrusion, so it made Seto think he'd done it before.

"You're sure?" Seto was poised to enter him. He wouldn't move if Yuugi didn't give him the go ahead, but he really, really needed him to give the go ahead.

Yuugi closed his eyes and nodded. "You were my light in the dark." Seto felt his throat tighten at the words and he hid his face as he entered. He whispered his name and Yuugi cried out, little body arching to the ceiling. Seto kept him flying, kept his eyes rolled back.

Each thrust brought him closer to the small boy beneath him. Each thrust made him more insane with need. They moved in sync, bodies melting together like they were made to do so. It was so fluid, it made Seto wonder if he hadn't been chasing the wrong man all those other times.

Yuugi was trembling in his arms, breath coming in little pants. He'd finished? When? Seto pushed harder a few more times, desperate to join him. He released within him, smiling at the happy purr Yuugi emitted.

The silence fell then, but Seto reveled in it. Yuugi would soon break it, he knew.

Just like he knew everything else about him.
