36.- ON THE WAY TO HEAVEN
Kurt woke up feeling extremely happy. He shuddered when he remembered the awful fight he caused the day before, but fortunately Catherine made him see some sense and he could fix things with Blaine before it was too late. He was grateful and as a thank-you gesture his was going to make sure Catherine had an amazing time with them while they were visiting the ranch, including some exclusive bonding time with his childhood best friend. She didn´t know yet but she had earned herself a new friend. With this new resolution in mind, he got up, got dressed, and went down the stairs hoping not to be late for breakfast.
Blaine was sitting in the living room reading the newspaper with his back to the stairs. He was so focused on his reading that he didn´t noticed Kurt until he had porcelain white arms around his shoulders and felt a soft kiss on his cheek.
"Good morning, honey"
"Good morning, angel" – Blaine smiled and took Kurt´s hands to guide him around the armchair so he could sit on his lap – "Did you sleep well?"
"I did. Thank you. Did you?" – Kurt sat where Blaine placed him and put his arms around Blaine´s neck kissing him softly on the lips.
"I had great night but I must say that my morning is starting pretty good"
"Really? And what could possibly make it better?" – Kurt´s voice was sounding very seductive
"This…" – Blaine leaned in and kissed Kurt softly but passionately. He asked for entry and Kurt granted it gladly, both of them lost in a slowly building kiss. They could have continued if it wasn´t for a throat being cleared next to them.
"Hello boys" – Victoria stood behind the armchair, smiling down at them.
"Mom! Good morning" – Blaine said after he suddenly broke the kiss.
"Good morning Victoria" – Kurt stood really quickly with a deep blush on his face and Blaine followed him. He couldn´t believe that his boyfriend´s mother had caught him on her son´s lap with said son´s tongue doing wickedly awesome thing in his mouth.
"I can see that it´s a pretty good morning for you two"
"It is" – Blaine said shamelessly which really annoyed Kurt because he was mortified.
"How about we go outside to have breakfast? Will is coming down in a few minutes too"
"Sure" – Kurt answered. When Victoria turned around he slapped Blaine´s shoulder softly to show his annoyance and Blaine whispered "What?" without losing his smile.
"You know what!" – Kurt whispered back. Blaine just chuckled and kissed Kurt´s cheek while he took his hand. Kurt shook his head and took a deep breath to calm himself. He was mad, but he was not mad at Blaine; he was mad at himself for not being able to be mad at Blaine. His boyfriend´s eyes and smile were his weakness so he couldn´t stay angry. However, everything was forgotten when he heard people coming down the stairs.
"Hello everybody" – William greeted while stepping down the stairs with Edward and Norah coming down behind him. New rounds of hellos and good-mornings started and then they all walked out to the back patio to have breakfast outside. Kurt and Blaine avoided William´s eyes at all cost; Blaine´s father noticed and he was having a great time trying to engage them in conversation on purpose.
Just when the maid brought the trolley out with all assortments of fruits, cereals, eggs, bacon and other delicious treats; Catherine showed up.
"Good morning everyone"
"Hi Catherine! You arrived just in time to join us for breakfast" – Victoria said as greeting.
"Oh no! I didn´t mean to intrude. I didn´t know you were having a late breakfast today"
"Don´t worry about it. We just stood up pretty late last night, you know just playing around" – William gave Kurt and Blaine a pointed look and both boys looked down in embarrassment – "Please, help yourself to whatever you want and join us"
"Thank you. As I already ate I´ll just have some fruit" – Catherine went to the trolley, placed some fruit on a small plate and joined everybody at the table.
"So, Kurt" – Catherine looked at his best friend´s boyfriend and gave him a small sweet smile – "Are you ready for another exciting day at the ranch?"
None of the adults knew the important role Catherine had play on Kurt and Blaine´s reconciliation the day before and they were surprised to see her showing Kurt some kind of attention, especially after she had pretty much ignored him last time they had shared a meal together. They all looked expectantly at Kurt, waiting for his reaction and response.
"Yes! I think I am. I´m gonna give riding another try today. I´m sure Blaine will manage to teach me but I would appreciate it if you give him a hand. Everybody knows that nature and farm animals are not my forte so I´m sure he could use all the help he could get" – Kurt answered Catherine in good humor, with sincerity, and with no a trace of animosity.
"Sure! I´d love to!" – Catherine said enthusiastically and the way her eyes shone let everybody know how excited she was at the idea. She really appreciated that Kurt was keeping his word of not pushing her away from Blaine; with this request, she knew he was not only doing that, but he was actually inviting her to be part of the activities they were planning. She could tell now that Kurt was actually a great guy and it was no wonder why Blaine was so crazy about him.
To say that everybody at the table, Blaine included, were dumbfounded at the exchange was an understatement. They seemed like they had been friends forever with the way they were looking and smiling at each other. Blaine was really happy to see Kurt and Catherine bonding so when his boyfriend looked back at him, he leaned in to whisper a soft "thank you" in his ear. Kurt just nodded in acknowledgement but he thought that Catherine was the one who deserved being thanked to.
"My dearest Catherine" – Edward spoke up – "If you have decided to spend more time with these two, especially now that they seem to be back to their usual love-bird state, I should warn you that you should probably have some lemon drops at hand, to balance all the sweetness out"
"Grandpa!"
"I second that!" – William interjected
"DAD!"
"Blaine, honey. It´s ok" – Kurt said in giggles – "I actually agree with them"
"See B? Kurt is one of us now!" – Edwards laughed and everybody followed. Blaine raised his arms in surrender and Kurt chanced the bubbling atmosphere to kiss Blaine´s lips briefly.
They all finished breakfast and the teenagers went to the stables in order to start Kurt´s riding lessons while the adults separated in two groups: Norah and Victoria went to the greenhouses to see the new flowers, while William and Edward went fishing to the stream that ran through the property a few miles away from the house.
Snowflake was brought out to the paddock and unlike the day before, it only took a couple of tries before Kurt had mastered the technique to jump on a horse properly. Then, they decided to start with some laps around within the fenced area; with Blaine guiding the horse until Kurt got used to the feeling before letting him ride the horse on his own.
Catherine had helped at the beginning but now she was just giving moral support. She was impressed with Kurt´s progress and with the dynamic he and Blaine had. It had been a real treat to watch them work together as a united and well blended team. Blaine took his role seriously and made sure Kurt knew exactly what he needed to do; but, he also managed to sound reassuring which helped keeping Kurt relaxed and comfortable; something very important when you were trying to dominate a horse.
"Ok angel. I´m gonna unhook the rope now so you will be on your own. Are you ready?"
"Yes. I think so"
"I need you to be sure. I don´t want you to get hurt. You´re doing great so you don´t have to push yourself if you are not ready"
"I´m sure, I promise" – Kurt answered making sure his voice sounded like he really meant it and Blaine let go.
Kurt was ecstatic to be riding a horse all on his own and he couldn´t help the happy laughter that escaped his mouth or the huge grin that plastered all over his face.
"You´re doing great! I´m so proud of you! Just keep her walking in circles around the fence and when you´re ready press on her sides to set her in a soft march" – Blaine yelled his instructions while walking towards Catherine who was perched on the fence; he watched Kurt leave on Snowflake, giving him a thumbs-up to let him know he had heard what Blaine had just said.
"He is doing really well!" – Catherine rested his hands on Blaine´s shoulders once he stood in front of her and he patted them affectionately, still keeping his eyes on Kurt.
"Yeah. He seems to be enjoying it a lot, too"
"Absolutely. So, I take it you both talked it all out last night"
"We did. Thank you for talking to him. I don´t think we would be having such a good time together now if it weren´t for you"
"Nonsense! After everything I´ve seen?… You two would have definitely worked it out on your own. I just moved things along a little bit"
"I thank you regardless"
"You were right about him. He is someone I would really like being friends with. You did well Blaine. I´m proud of you"
"You have no idea how my life has changed for the better ever since I met him. I´ve never been this happy"
"I can tell. I´m green with envy here. Your family seems to be more supportive, too. I didn´t picture your dad being so ok with you having a boyfriend, before"
"I know. Kurt played a big role in that happening, believe it or not. He has my entire family wrapped around his finger as you could see over breakfast. About you being envious, you don´t need to be; you´ll find the right person for you soon. You´ll see"
"I hope you´re right because I´m growing impatient here"
"Impatient? You? Never!" – Blaine joked and Catherine laughed – "I´m thirsty and I´m sure you and Kurt must be too. Can you keep an eye on him while I go to the house and get some bottled water?
"Sure. I´ll keep you handsome man safe" – Catherine winked.
"Thanks"
Blaine made a sign to Kurt to let him know he was coming back soon and Kurt nodded. Blaine left and Kurt took the opportunity to talk to Catherine. He let Snowflake reach her and then pulled in the reins softly to stop her right in front of her.
"So, are you having fun? You are doing really well, Kurt"
"Thank you. You and Blaine are good teachers"
"Oh please! I barely did anything. You and Blaine work really well together"
"We do" – Kurt said dreamily.
"You love him, don´t you?"
"I do. I love him with all I have"
"Great! That means you and I can be friends"
"I thought we already were" – Kurt smiled and Catherine´s eye got a little misty.
"I think so, too"
"So, now that we being friends is settled I´m gonna need a favor"
"What kind of favor?"
"I really want to make it up to Blaine for everything that happened yesterday and I thought you could help me think of something, as you are familiar with the place"
"I see. What do you have in mind?"
"Something romantic… maybe a picnic?... in a place where we could be by ourselves, you know… no interruptions" – Kurt blushed at the last part.
"You naughty boy! Blaine is going to flip!" – Catherine laughed – "I didn´t picture you as the Casanova type!"
"I´m no Casanova, trust me; but I love my boyfriend and he is always doing romantic things for me. I just want to do something special for him this time around"
"I´m in, Kurt; and you have come to right person. I know just the place …."
By the time Blaine returned with the bottled water, Catherine and Kurt had planned the whole thing. Kurt dismounted to rest a little bit and to grab the bottle from Blaine who had come to stand next to him.
"So, how are you feeling, love? Do you think you can try to make Snowflake run little bit?"- Blaine asked while rubbing his hand softly up and down Kurt´s back.
"I think so. I didn´t expect to like this so much. It´s hard work, but it´s fun. Thank you for teaching me" – Kurt placed one hand on Blaine´s cheek to bring his face closer to his and kissed him softly. Both smiled into it and Blaine deepened the kiss a little bit.
"Awww you guys are so in love and you´re so sweet!" – Catherine squealed, then she narrowed her eyes on her friends as they separated from their kiss – "If it wasn´t because I love you Blaine and because I like you a lot Kurt, I would hate both your guts so much right now!"
"Good to know" – Blaine chuckled – "Only you can compliment someone and be kind of mean to them in the same sentence"
"Well. It´s true. Edward was right; you guys just pour out honey and it´s sickeningly cute"
"I will look the other side on the I hate you and the sickeningly part, just because you said you liked me… a lot" – Kurt winked at Catherine.
"What can I say?"- Catherine shrugged her shoulders – "you know how to win a girl over. It´s such a shame you´re gay because otherwise I would be all over you in a second"
"Hey!" – Blaine exclaimed while wrapping his arms possessively around Kurt as if to shield him from greedy hands – "Doesn´t the fact that he is taken, by your best friend by the way, mean anything to you?"
"No, not really" – Catherine looked like she was really pondering the thought. Kurt giggled.
"So much for friendship" – Blaine said sulking and Catherine just stuck out her tongue for him.
"It´s alright honey, you know that there´s no one else for me than you" – Kurt kissed Blaine´s nose
"Oh God! Please stop! If you keep it up I´ll be so desperate for a boyfriend that I could even give Josh Miller a call" – Catherine shuddered at the last part.
"Cat, don´t even joke with that. That guy is a total douche bag!" – Blaine admonished.
"Who´s Josh Miller?" – Kurt was curious at Catherine´s and Blaine´s reaction to the name.
"He is a neighbor. His family´s ranch is very close. He used to come by and play with us but just because our parents insisted on it, they didn´t know the awfully rude kid he really was and his personality didn´t improve over the years" – Catherine offered – "I can even stand to see him now, not after what happened"
"What happened?" – Kurt was worried now.
"A couple of years ago, all three families were vacationing here. Catherine and I would spend all day every day together and he would stop by every now and then. His visits were not welcome because he was so unpleasant to be around" – Blaine continued the story – "Anyways, one day he overheard a conversation where Catherine and I were talking about all the changes at home because I had come out; he made his presence known, interrupting our conversation and it all went downhill from there"
"What do you mean? Did he hurt you?" – Kurt asked running his thumb over Blaine´s cheek and he looked at him as if trying to spot places were Blaine could have been hurt.
"No physically. He didn´t get that far, at least with me" – Blaine looked at Catherine with a sad look on his face.
"Did he hurt you Catherine?"
"Well, the thing is that he had thought Blaine and I were together because of how close we were. When he found out about Blaine being gay he took it as an open invitation to pursue me and to tantalize Blaine" – Catherine took a deep breath – "One day when I was by myself walking around my property he came out of nowhere and he started to say all this things, like he was going to show me what was like to be with a real man"
"Oh dear! Please tell me he didn´t…"
"No. It didn´t get to that. I don´t know if it would have ever come to that, we were just kids. But, fortunately Blaine was near. So he pushed him away from me when he tried to kiss me"
"And he just left?"
"Yeah, I think he got scared. He knew all of our parents were good friends and that if something happened and I told my parents, with them being as clueless and neglecting as they were, probably wouldn´t have believed me; but Blaine and his family were a different story. So he ran away."
"What happened after that?"
"He would just stay away whenever we were with our parents, but if we were on our own he wouldn´t touch us but he wouldn´t miss the opportunity to make insinuating comments to me and threatening ones to Blaine"
"And is he still coming here?"
"I haven´t seen him in the last year or so as I´ve been away. I suppose he must still come every now and then"
"He seems dangerous"
"Don´t worry angel. I don´t think he is around and we are not fourteen anymore"
"No, but neither is he"- Kurt was really concerned because a person who would behave like that being so young could be a lot worse when growing older.
"I know what´s running inside that beautiful head of yours, so don´t. Let´s forget about him and concentrate on making a cowboy out of you. We only have a couple of hours to make you confident enough on a horse as to join us in the tour around the ranch this afternoon" – Blaine said softly.
"Ok. I´ll try."
"Great" – Blaine kissed Kurt´s forehead and released him so he could jump back on the horse – "Now, get up there and after taking one lap with Snowflake walking, urge her to start a slow run. When you are ready to leave the paddock, Catherine and I will join you on our horses for a slow ride on the open field, alright?"
"You´re the boss… and before you say anything and let what I just said get over your head, just remember that even though I love you, I don´t have to like you all the time" – Kurt gave Blaine a glance that showed he meant business.
"Oh, I know and I appreciate that you are listening to my instructions. I just want you to learn and keep you safe while you do it"
"I know" – Kurt kissed Blaine one last time before jumping on Snowflake without much effort and set himself to do what Blaine had just asked. Catherine took the opportunity to put their plan into action.
"So, Blaine. I was thinking that you and I could go for a ride tomorrow. Cupcake and Shadow could really use the exercise"
"I don´t know Cat. I left Kurt alone yesterday and it didn´t end up well"
"The argument with Kurt had nothing to do with you and I spending some time together and you know it" – Catherine dared Blaine say otherwise with a glance and when her friend didn´t respond she continued- "Now that the obvious has been settled, I would have you known that I already discussed this with Kurt and he has graciously agree to spare you for a couple of hours so you can go riding with me"
"Really? He did?"
"Yes. He is really a sweetheart. He said he understood that we need some one-on-one time and he is ok with that; he knows he won´t be able to keep up with us galloping even if we invite him to join us…so… he said he really wanted us to enjoy a good ride and a good friend-to-friend talk as we used to"
"If Kurt is really ok with it, I´ll be happy to go out with you tomorrow"
"Awesome. I´ll just look over the fact that you are so whipped that you need your boyfriend´s permission to come with me and I´ll just be happy about our little outing"
"Hey! It´s not like that and you know it!" – Blaine crossed his arms over his chest – "Kurt is my guest here and my boyfriend so I don´t want to be inconsiderate by leaving him to his own devices while I go around having fun"
"Whatever you say Blaine. I´ve seen you with my own eyes; you´re whipped and you know it" – Catherine laughed and Blaine joined in.
"Yeah, I know"
"I´ll keep the secret. I won´t tell Kurt, I promise"
"Trust me; he knows so don´t worry about it"
"If it´s any consolation, he is totally into you, too. It´s obvious he would do just about anything for you. You are very lucky. Both of you"
"Believe me. I know"
Once Kurt felt confident enough to leave the safety of the fenced paddock, Blaine and Catherine joined him on their own horses and guided him on a soft run around the nearby open field. It had been kind of scary at the beginning but Snowflake seemed to really like him and she would obey every command, so after a few minutes, Kurt felt comfortable riding the horse. He was ready for the afternoon´s events thanks to Blaine and Catherine.
The whole family and Catherine got together for a light lunch in the house. Edward dominated the conversation by giving Kurt glimpses of all the things they were going to see later on. Kurt listened attentively; he was falling in love with the place so he didn´t want to miss a thing. Blaine was in absolute bliss to see Kurt enjoying his time in the ranch so much.
When it was decided that their lunch must had settled and they were fit to ride a horse, everybody when to the stables to take their own. Kurt was impressed with the skills everyone showed. He knew he was nowhere near them; but he had had just one day of practice and Blaine had said he was proud with his progress, so he was too.
The tour started out at the stables, where Kurt could see the beautiful horses they were breading. Then, they went to see the greenhouses, the orchards, and the cattle. Kurt was impressed with the whole thing as even though it was not the family´s main business, it was undeniably a well structured and organized operation.
Leaving the business part, they rode along the open field where they could enjoy the pine and eucalypt scented air, it was intoxicating and it made the experience all the more enjoyable. Finally, they reached the small creek that ran along the property. They were in an open area so they could see the fields over the running water, and they crossed a skillfully crafted wooden bridge to get to the other side. The creek ran south and you could follow its path until the grassland gave way to the woods and the stream was hidden behind the big thick trees. They kept riding along the grass and wild flowers until they reached the property´s limits. From the fence, Catherine explained to Kurt a little bit about her family´s property as they owned the land on the other side. In Kurt´s opinion the place was absolutely stunning.
As they decided to go back, Catherine said her farewell as she was returning home from there. She made her horse stroll on the opposite direction of the fence for a bit; then, she made it give a U-turn and break into a full run towards the barrier. He horse jumped really high over the fence and Catherine landed graciously on the other side. Kurt´s jaw dropped to the floor.
"Show off!" – Blaine yelled after her
"Green is not your color Blaine" – Catherine answered – "So don´t hate me because I´m pretty and a better rider"
"That was really impressive Catherine"
"Thank you Kurt!"
"We´ll see you tomorrow sweetie" – Victoria said in good bye.
"Sure. Blaine don´t forget about our date. I´ll see you tomorrow around 10"
"I won´t. I´ll see you then"
Catherine said good bye and gave everyone a smile and winked while everyone waved her away and then she headed at top speed towards her house.
Dinner was a happy event. This time Kurt was the main focus of attention as everyone wanted to hear his opinion on everything they had seen that day. During the brief time Blaine excused himself from the table to go to the bathroom, Kurt took the opportunity to tell everyone about the plan he had come up with, at least the PG version of it, because he needed their help to make sure Blaine left with Catherine and with some other things he needed to do. By the time Blaine came back, everything was settled.
"So, I don´t know what your stance is but I think we all should head to bed. We have a long day tomorrow" – Edward said after they had been talking and laughing for hours after dinner.
"What do you mean grandpa?"
"Well, you are going out with Catherine, your parents are going to spend the day with the Millers who arrived yesterday, and Kurt is joining your grandma and me to visit the greenhouses and orchard on foot"
"I didn´t know you had plans with Kurt"
"We do. You have been monopolizing my future grandson-in-law´s time and I think I deserve some attention as well. Don´t you agree?" – Edward gave Blaine a pointed look but it didn´t have the desired effect as his words had made both boys red in the face. Kurt was embarrassed for sure, but he was flattered at the same time and he swooned to see that Blaine hadn´t contradicted his grandfather; instead, he had smiled and nodded in agreement. Kurt was sure both of them would have freaked out at the implication if it weren´t for the conversation they had had the night before – "Great! So Kurt is all ours tomorrow morning"
"I´d love spending more time with you, I really hope you know that" – Kurt said as a silent acknowledgement; because even though Edward had come up with the fake plans for Blaine to believe there was no need to worry about Kurt staying behind while he was with Catherine; he really appreciated Edward´s support and the affection he had showed him, so much so, that now he actually wished the outing with Blaine´s grandparents was real.
"I know and I appreciate it" – Edward answered because he got the message – "And we will have many more opportunities in the future to do fun things together, don´t worry" – Edward winked at Kurt.
"I´ll hold you to that"
Everybody at the table just looked on. It was a simple and seemingly unimportant exchange but it was obvious that Kurt and Edward were having a moment; so they waited until it was over to reassume the conversation. Blaine was speechless as he watched his boyfriend interact with his grandfather and the rest of his family beaming at them, too.
"You do that" – Edward drank some water – "Blaine can stay home if he wants to, we can have lots of fun without him because we could share embarrassing stories without him knowing about it"
"Grandpa!" – Blaine protested and just like that the moment passed and everybody laughed.
"Fine! We´ll invite you every now and then" – Edward said to placate his grandson although everybody knew it was all in good fun, because even if Edward loved all his grandchildren, Blaine was the apple of his eye. Kurt kissed Blaine´s cheek to make sure there were not harsh feelings about the joke. Blaine smiled and it was all well.
"So, mom and dad. The Millers are here, huh? Do you know if Josh is here with them?"
"I don´t know. Do you want us to tell him to come by if he is there? You used to play together when you were kids but I think you haven´t seen each other in a couple of years" – Victoria offered.
"No, it´s alright. We never were that close. I was just curious"
"Alright, then"
Blaine didn´t look very happy with the news about the Millers being around and Kurt was worried. He really hoped Blaine and Catherine didn´t have to interact with the only person who had tainted their peaceful vacations at the ranch.
Blaine walked Kurt to his room as it was now a tradition. They kissed each other good-night; they did for a long while, but being careful not to repeat the little encounter they had had with William the night before. After Kurt repeatedly assured Blaine that he was more than fine with him going out with Catherine the next day, they finally parted ways to have a well deserved rest.
Morning came too early in Kurt´s opinion. He was exhausted as all the travelling and exercise he had done the previous days had finally caught up with him. He remembered that today was a special day as he was going to surprise Blaine with a very romantic and hot, yes hot, date; and with that thought in mind he got himself out of bed and started to get ready for the day.
Breakfast was a repetition of the morning before. Everyone gathered around the table at the patio and just when they had finished, Catherine showed up to kidnap Blaine for the rest of the morning. Everybody wished them a nice day and Blaine got ready to leave, not before he kissed his boyfriend good-bye tenderly in front of everyone present. The women awed, William smiled, but Edward shook his head saying "still B+, Blaine, still B+". No one was sure what exactly Edward was talking about, but knowing him they all knew better than to ask.
Once Blaine was out of sight, Kurt got to work. He went back to his room to change and get everything he needed; Victoria helped him with the items he needed from Blaine´s room. Then, he went to the kitchen where, by Edward´s orders, one of the maids helped him prepare the picnic basket with all of Blaine´s favorite things. Finally, when he was sure he had everything with him, he entered the coordinates Catherine had given him on the GPS app on his phone and he went to the stables to get Snowflake.
Blaine was having a blast running on Shadow. He had missed his horse all these months he hadn´t been able to visit the ranch. Shadow was important to him because during those awful weeks after the attack, watching over him had kept his mind from thinking about what had happened to him and when he was well enough to start riding again, those specks of freedom while galloping along the open fields had helped him heal his wounded soul. He was extremely happy that Catherine has suggested the outing and he was very grateful that she had insisted on it.
"Hey Blaine" – Catherine called out when they were both slowing down – "I feel like swimming. Let´s go to Waterland, we haven´t been there in ages"
"I didn´t bring a change of clothes"
"Neither did I! But let´s go either way, please! Don´t be a prude, swimming suits and underwear are pretty much the same thing and it´s not like we haven´t swim naked before"
"We were eight, Cat!"
"I don´t see the difference, we´re still as close as we were then"
"There are BIG differences now Cat on both sides"
"Oh! You´re blushing! That´s so cute. Do you blush like this when you are undressing for Kurt?"
"I don´t… I mean… Kurt and I… look! I´m not talking about that with you"
"But I´m your friend! That is the kind of thing we should talk about"
"Catherine, please"
"If it wasn´t because I know better I would think that you and Kurt hadn´t done the deed yet" – Catherine laughed but when Blaine looked away and remained silent she opened her eyes in shock – "You haven´t?!"
"No, Catherine, we haven´t"
"But that´s impossible! I mean… you are so in love and so affectionate with each other, so in tune, I thought…"
"Yes, we are in love; yes, we are affectionate and comfortable to be close to each other but we are still waiting for the right time"
"Wow" – Catherine said in a whisper.
"I know you have a different opinion when it comes to sex and I´m sorry if it disappoints you, but.."
"No. I´m impressed"
"You are?" – Blaine was surprised – "But, weren´t you the one who would always say that sex was just to have fun with someone you liked and the whole romantic thing was ridiculous?"
"Yes, I was. But I know better now. After losing my virginity to a guy who I thought I loved and that he loved me back, and it all ended up with an empty bed and countless missed calls on his part the next day, I grew bitter"
"Oh Catherine! I didn´t know that"
"It was my fault. I let everything going in my house rushed me into thinking that the first guy who paid some kind of attention to me was the love of my life"
"It was not your fault. He was as an asshole"
"Maybe, but I could have stopped him or slowed things down and I didn´t. After that, I decided that sex was just sex and that I wasn´t going to be stupid enough as to give my heart along with my body anymore. My parents had made sure I knew that love was for fools."
"Cat…"
"I know. It was a really idiotic thing for me to think and do. But as I said, I know better now; coming here and seeing your grandparents, your parents, you and Kurt… it has been a wake-up call for me, you see? I´ve spend many hours every night these past two days re-evaluating everything I had made myself believe just to feel a little better and I don´t want to do that anymore" – Catherine was drying the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand.
"What do you want to do?"
"I want to give love a chance. I want to have somebody to love and who loves me back" – Catherine chanced a little hopeful smile – "Do you think I can get that someday?"
"Yes. You are a better person that what you give yourself credit for. The right person is out there, maybe you have already met him but you haven´t noticed. Who knows? Look at me! It took me five months to realize I was in love with Kurt"
"Are you serious? You had that gorgeous guy at your hand´s reach and you didn´t do anything about it for five months?"
"Yes and it´s the biggest regret I have in my short-lived life"
"Damn Blaine! That was really dumb"
"Shut-up"
"Fine. But in all seriousness? I´m happy for you; and as I said before, I´m impressed by how mature you and Kurt are being about your relationship. I´m glad that you are not making the same mistakes I made. Your experiences in life could have pushed you in the same self-destructive direction, but you did fall into that. You are so much braver than me and I´m proud of you"
"Thank you. But you are brave too. You just had really bad things happening to you since you were very little"
"That´s not an excuse. I could have made better choices"
"Maybe, but it´s never too late. If you think you need to make changes in your life for the better, just make them"
"I will. Next time you see me I´ll be with my hot boyfriend, head over heels in love, just like you"
"I can´t wait" – Blaine said affectionately and reach out his hand for Catherine to take. She took it and squeezed it gently. She was so happy to have Blaine as her friend.
"So, let´s end this pity party and go for that swim. What do you say?"
"You win. Let´s go"
Blaine followed Catherine to that part of the creek they had named Waterland when they were children; on the way he couldn´t help feeling a little sad about Catherine. He had known her almost his entire life and it still amazed him the things he learned about her today; his friend was hurting, had been for a long time and he really hoped things got better for her. She was a tough girl and she had hid everything inside so he forgave himself for to being there for her more, but now that he knew he was determined to keep tabs on her more often and to make sure she was really doing well.
It was almost midday and Kurt had been walking for thirty minutes now. The GPS showed that he was close to his destination. He had left Snowflake hidden and tied to a tree before he started his way down the trail Catherine had told him about. He was getting worried that maybe he had taken the wrong way but then the sound of water started to grow distinctive and he smiled. Kurt kept going until the noise was deafening for the unaccustomed ear, he pushed through the last line of trees and he marveled at the sight. This place was heaven, he had been on his way to heaven and he hadn´t known it. This amazing piece of nature definitely was going to be the perfect setting for what he had in mind.
A/N: So, I guess you know that we have some drama coming our way, but I hope you liked this transitional chapter, too. Let me know what you think. Until next week!
