The TARDIS shook violently. I managed to quickly grab onto a rail in order to prevent myself from falling. "Oh, sweetie, for God's sake!" River reached over and pulled what I assumed must have been to release the breaks. The TARDIS immediately stopped shaking.
"Thank you River" She smirked.
"Anytime, sweetie."
"Backseat driver" the Doctor mumbled. River smiled. A few seconds later, the TARDIS came to a complete stop.
"So Barcelona then?" I asked.
"Yep. Right outside of these doors" the Doctor responded.
"Is the Oxygen breathable? Toxic? Anything potentially dangerous I should know about?" I rambled.
"Of course the air is breathable, sweetie" River answered. "And no more toxins here than on Earth. Oh, and anytime you travel with the Doctor it's potentially dangerous."
"Hey," he called out.
"She's right. I collapsed and almost went into a coma!"
"One time and I apologized for that." River spun towards the Doctor.
"MY daughter almost went into a coma? When was this?"
"Cardiff, but she was fine then and she's fine now. I took excellent care of her, if I do say so myself. Now, let's stop wasting time bickering and see what's outside these doors." I bit back a snide remark and nodded.
"Very well," River responded, "but I'm keeping an extra close eye on her today."
"Well, part of that was my fault" I muttered. "I wasn't supposed to wander off."
"This is part of the reason why I'm going to be keeping an extra close eye on you today." I sighed in defeat.
"Fine, let's just go. I'm anxious to see a new planet." The Doctor opened the TARDIS doors and I went out first closely followed by the Doctor and River. I looked around. The sun was at its zenith point in the sky, but wasn't nearly as bright as the sun is on Earth. Surprisingly, though, the air wasn't chilly at all. If anything, it was a bit on the warm side. I took in the scene around me. There were rolling hills with rows of colorful flowers as far as the eye could see. I turned towards River. "I thought that you said this place was full of bustling shopping centers."
"It is," she said. "These fields serve as the dividers between the centers."
"These fields are neutral territory. No one is allowed to build on them" the Doctor interjected.
"Why? Are there wars?"
"A long, long time ago over territory" the Doctor explained, "but I landed us about 1,000 years ahead of the last major one. The locals just decided to keep these neutral lands, in order to avoid future territorial wars."
"Don't worry, Violet. I double checked his landing date, so we're safe." River assured me.
"Ok, good. So which way are we headed?"
"2.5k kilometers north northwest" the Doctor responded.
"And which way is North northwest?"
"Take a guess" the Doctor told me.
"I don't know" I protested.
"Directionality is an innate sense in Time Lords. Give it a try." I closed my eyes and turned about a quarter of a turn to the right.
"Um…that way?" I questioned pointing directly in front of me.
"Very good, Violet. See, I knew you could do it. Now, how long have we been here?"
"About 3 minutes?"
"Exact time, down to the seconds."
"Umm…3 minutes and 42 seconds and counting" I nervously responded.
"Right again!" the Doctor said with a smile. "See, I knew I could get your Time Lord senses fine-tuned in one week's time."
"Wait! Hold up! You're trying to tell me that everything we did was only in a one-week time span?" The Doctor nodded. "It feels so much longer."
"Time travel can do that to you, sweetie" River responded. It can make you feel like you've been gone a lot longer than you truly have."
"Is Time Travel always this mind-boggling?"
"Not always" River assured me. "You'll get used to it soon enough."
"I hope so," I said as I began walking in the direction of the shopping center. "So are all these shopping centers the same? Or are they themed? Or what?"
"The shopping centers are only one part of each section. They also have homes, hospitals and many other amenities like on Earth. The shopping centers are just what Barcelona is best known for" the Doctor told me. "Think of each section like a country. Each one has a distinct culture."
"And which one are we headed to now?"
"Mawkingville" the Doctor told us. "River can tell you all about the culture there since she's studied the Mawkingees in detail."
"You're thinking of the Markingees" River said, "but I do know quite a bit about the Mawkingees, as well. So, Mawkingee is derived from the term Mawkish, which means sentimental. Mawkingville society is built heavily upon religion and tradition. They are a monotheistic society who's religion…"
"That's enough, River. Violet doesn't need an extensive history lesson."
"You asked for a description of Mawkingee society and culture and I was giving you one."
"What is their religion called and what customs do they practice now?" I asked River.
"Both excellent questions. They practice Maudlinism. The locals go to a temple twice a day to pray, once at sunrise and once at sunset. Once a year, they have a festival where they give sacrafise to their god. Maudlin."
"What kind of sacrifice?"
"Gold, family heirlooms…that sort of thing."
"Is there anything else I should know so I don't accidently do anything offensive?"
"They're very open people. Just don't try to impose your beliefs on them and you should be ok."
"Thank you River."
"Anytime, sweetie." We walked the next couple of minutes in silence when suddenly a scream filled the air.
