Chapter 35

Dean had just finished tying Sam to the chair then turned to Adeline who had her arms crossed and was glaring at Dean. "I'm sorry for saying you'd run away to the angels." He told her quietly not meeting her eyes. "I'm not sorry for calling you pathetic. I am sorry about Lisa though, you liked her so I liked her." Adeline retorted and Dean sighed rubbing his face tiredly. Things had been going good for him and Ads recently and it was going to bumpy again.. "Cas…Get your winged tip ass down here now!" Dean called out and then looked around the room and sighed.

"Damn it Cas! This concerns Sam my brother! He's not human. Who knows what he could've done to Adeline!"

Adeline narrowed her eyes to slits. "Nice Dean. Use your sister who's banging the angel to get him down here. Real classy." She had just finished saying when Castiel appeared behind her. "Adeline…..are you okay?" Castiel asked her still wondering why she hadn't wanted to see him and if it was still this way then he noticed her bandaged hand. He walked over and grabbed it gently and unwrapped it. His warm and gentle touch made her sigh as warmth pulsed through her body. "I'm fine." Adeline murmured still looking over at Dean with a glare. Castiel saw the bite mark and frowned. "Did Sam do this?" Castiel asked her stiffly and looked over at Sam tied to a chair with narrowed eyes.

Adeline snorted, "No, I did it to myself." Castiel looked at her surprised at the answer. "Why?" He asked and Adeline turned and met his eyes. They looked sad and tired to her. "Because Dean had to go and get a freakin truth curse on him." She grumbled as Castiel healed her hand then kept a hold of it. "Hey we both said things we never wanted to admit to each other. How about we get over it and focus on this problem?" Dean said pointing over at Sam.

"Fine." Adeline agreed looking back at her brother. Then over at Castiel running her other hand through her hair as he watched her face worriedly. "Adeline…did I do anything wrong. Dean said you didn't want to see me." Castiel told her and her eyes softened at Castiel's worried voice. She ruffled his hair. "You have done nothing Cas."

Dean was taken aback by the tenderness he heard in Adeline's voice. I actually really love him. More than I've ever loved anybody. Dean frowned Adeline had been telling the truth about that and he realized he would have to have a talk with Cas concerning his intentions with his sister. He felt hurt that Adeline didn't love him best but instead a stupid trench coated angel who she had only met three years ago even though one of those years she had, had no contact with him.

"Are you sure? Adeline you are more important to me, if something is bothering you please inform me." Castiel said searching her eyes he had been afraid for a moment that she had found out what he had done but it didn't seem like that. But he was hurt that she hadn't called for him if she had needed help or wanted company of some sort. "Because I didn't feel the need to bother you during this whole war thing." She said a half truth and Dean raised an eyebrow at her but didn't say anything on the subject. "Okay, you two can catch up later or whatever, But Cas, check out Sam something is terribly wrong with him."

Castiel sighed and let go of Adeline's hand then walked over to Sam. Bending a bit to look at his face. "You're right he looks terrible." Castiel looked over at Dean, "You did this?" Dean just stayed silent and observed Cas checking Sam out. "Cas?" Sam questioned waking up and Castiel opened his eye to look it over. "Has he been feverish?" Castiel asked Dean. "Have you?" Dean turned the question to Sam.

"No. Why?" Sam asked once Castiel let go of his head. "Is he speaking in tongues?" He looked over at Dean and Adeline before turning back to Sam. "Are you speaking in tongues?"

"No. What are you…Are you diagnosing me?"

"You better hope he can." Dean answered Sam. "You really think that this is…" Castiel reached out and was checking Sam's pulse as Adeline walked over and stood behind him. "What, you think that there's a clinic out there for people who just pop out of hell wrong? He asks you answer, then you shut your hole. You got it?" Dean had interrupted Sam also coming closer to him. "How much do you sleep?" Castiel asked him.

"I don't." Sam answered and Adeline frowned at the answer. That means Sam had been awake in the same room whenever Dean was asleep. "At all?"

"Not since I got back." Sam answered Dean. Castiel and Adeline looked at each other with frowns then they shared uneasy glances with Dean. "And it never occurred to you that there might be something off about that?!"

"Of course it did, Dean. I-I just never told you."

Castiel grabbed Adeline's hand and gave it a quick squeeze before he let go and walked over to the other side of Sam. "Sam…what are you feeling now?"

"I feel like my nose is broken."

"No, that's a physical sensation. How do you feel?" Castiel asked him with a quick glance at Adeline's narrowed eyes that were on Sam. "Well, I think…"

"Feel." Castiel interrupted him getting an idea of what may be wrong with him. "I…don't know." Castiel looked over at Dean then at Adeline and started taking his belt off. Adeline raised an eyebrow at Cas wondering what he planned on doing as he pulled his belt through the loops and walked closer to Sam. "What..uh?" Sam started. "This will be unpleasant. Bite down on this." Castiel said before he put the belt in Sam's mouth. "If there's someplace that you find soothing, you should go there. In your mind." Castiel clarified and Adeline snorted at the unnecessary comment. Castiel rolled up his sleeve then put his hand into Sam. Adeline unwrapped her sucker as Sam started screaming and frowned when she realized it was the last one she had. But she stuck it in her mouth wishing that instead of grape it was anything else…even soap would be more pleasant she thought as Castiel pulled his hand out of her little brother.

"Find anything?" Dean asked him. "No." Castiel answered him. "So that's good news?"

"I'm afraid not. Physically, he's perfectly healthy."

"Then what?"

"It's his soul. It's gone." Adeline cursed just what they needed another soul issue in their family. "I'm sorry one more time. Like I'm five." Dean walked over to the window then turned around to Cas. "Somehow, when Sam was resurrected, It was without his soul." Castiel said walking to Dean keeping his secret that he had messed up when he brought Sam back as Adeline eyed Sam cautiously. "So, where is it?"

"My guess is…still in the cage with Michael and Lucifer."

"So is he even still…Sam?"

"Well, you pose an interesting philosophical question." Castiel told Dean looking back over at Sam then at Adeline who had seated herself on the bedside him and was now sitting Indian style. Castiel really just wanted to talk to her alone. "Can you get it back?"

"Dean." Castiel frowned turning back to him. "You pulled me out." He argued with the angel. "It took several angels to rescue you and you weren't nearly as well guarded. Sam's soul is in Lucifer's cage. There's a big difference. It's not possible."

"Okay, well, there's got to be a way."

Adeline looked over at her brother and Castiel discussing what to do when she saw Sam moving out of the corner of her eye. She turned and flung out one her legs out and pushed his chair over and he toppled back with an oompf. Dean and Castiel came over frowning at Sam. "Was that really necessary?" Dean asked turning towards Adeline who just shrugged before she pulled out her sucker. "He was moving his arms to much."

"Are you going to untie me or pick me up?" Sam asked them. "No, I don't want you leaving this room let alone untying you." Dean grumbled back. "Dean, I'm not some psycho. I didn't want you to get hurt. I was just trying to stop the vamps." Sam took in another breath as Castiel picked him back up with the chair. "I'm sorry. It won't ever happen again. Please let me go."

"You're kidding, right?" Dean looked down at him.

"What are you gonna do? Keep me locked in here forever?"

"You say that like it's a bad thing." Adeline added in and got up and walked over wanting to stand next to Castiel. "Okay fine, look I get it. I get it, Dean, Addy. I was wrong. But I'm telling you I-I'm trying to get right. It's still me." Sam argued trying to make his siblings let him go.

"Is it?" Dean grumbled.

"Yes. So just let me go."

"No way in hell." Dean told him but looked over at Adeline and saw her nod approving. "I didn't want it to come to this." Sam said before he stood up from the chair, his hands already untied. "See if you just kept him down there he wouldn't have been able to move his arm." Adeline commented looking over at Cas who's brows were furrowed. "You're not going to keep me here or in the panic room or anywhere else. You're stuck with the soulless guy, so you might as well work with me. Let's fix this." Sam said looking between Adeline and Dean.

"I'm gonna be watching every move you make." Dean said with a threatening tone walking over to Sam. "Fine." Sam answered. "Sounds about right to me." "Cas. Clean him up." Adeline frowned at how Dean just seemed to call Cas for his own personal use. Castiel did heal Sam though then went over and brushed his fingertips against Adeline's. "All right, if we're gonna figure out what happened to your soul, then we need to find who yanked you out. You say you don't know?" Dean asked him. "No idea."

"Then we start a list. If it's so hard to spring someone out of the box, then who's got that kind of muscle?" Dean asked them all. Adeline glanced up at Cas as he started speaking. "I don't know. You have no memory of your resurrection?" Castiel asked Sam as Adeline felt something off but she dismissed the feeling. "I woke up in a field that's all I got."

"No clues? None?"

Sam thought about it then looked at them. "I've got one." Sam then told them about Samuel. "Okay, great let's go." Dean commented and Sam grabbed his bag then went out to the car. Dean turned to Adeline and saw she wasn't moving. "Ads?" Dean questioned.

"I'll meet you there. I have something I need to take care of first." Adeline told him and before Dean could ask her what the hell could be more important than figuring this thing out with Sam, she had disappeared. Castiel looked at just where Adeline had been, he was surprised she left.

Dean sighed and ran a hand through his hair figuring out where she had went. He looked up at Cas figuring he should have this conversation now. "What are your intentions with my sister?" Dean asked him and Castiel cocked his head wondering what he meant. "Are you just screwing her because you can or what?"

Castiel frowned and Dean punched the wall frustrated with all that was going on with Sam and now Cas and Adeline. "Damn it Cas. My sister really seems to like you for whatever reason and if you're just playing around with her feelings, I will end you. I mean it Cas." Dean growled Castiel looked at Dean surprised. "I would never hurt her Dean."

"You better mean that Cas. Because if you break her heart, if you do anything to her. I will take her blade and stab it into you, wars be damned. Because Adeline is my little sister. Yeah, she can be a badass, yeah she can get a job done smoothly, yeah she's cable to handle things herself but Adeline's soft in a different way."

Castiel nodded his head thinking of the way Adeline's body felt. "Yes, she is very soft." He agreed.

Dean looked at Cas with a frown and a bit freaked out guessing his thoughts by the look on his face. "Okay, hold it. Not like that." Dean slapped the back of Castiel's head getting his mind out of the gutter and shuddered a bit trying to get Adeline's way too much information truths out of his head.

"I mean the way she keeps her feelings bottled up is stupid. I mean really just the other day she was all out of sorts because it was Kayla's birthday. Now she seems to be a bit better sides her feelings with me right now. But she needs someone to talk to. Sometimes she went to Sam, doubt that's going to happen and she's pissed with me and so forth so that leaves you Cas." Dean poked him hard in the chest.

Castiel frowned at Dean. "What do I need to do?" He asked Dean wanting to help Adeline and with whatever was bothering her especially if she was thinking about her deceased daughter. "I don't know talk, listen. Sit with her. Adeline doesn't like asking for help, she's stubborn like that. But maybe…." Dean took in a breath not believing he was telling Cas this. "Maybe she'll let you in. Like all the way in to her mindset and her ways. You two were really close and you seemed to pick up on her feelings when Zach zapped me to the future."

Dean sighed again then banged his hand against the wall. "Damn it. Just don't…don't hurt her okay. And use protection." He grumbled out.

"I always have my angel blade." Castiel told Dean and watched as Dean rubbed his face. "Not that kind of protection. Condoms or birth control so she doesn't get pregnant." He told him not believing he was actually having this conversation. In fact he never really expected Adeline to be in a relationship at all. But this was in fact her second.

Castiel looked at Dean understanding. "She can't get pregnant. It has to do with her grace and soul intermixing and the way her atoms and cells are lining up now."

Dean looked at Cas oddly but nodded his head. "Okay, well then…I guess go find her then." Dean patted Castiel on the shoulder and turned around. "Oh, another thing." Dean swung his fist around and hit Castiel in the face. Dean cursed at the feeling in his hand and Castiel looked at him surprised. Then touched his hand healing it. "I don't understand. Why did you hit me?"

"Because it's what I'm supposed to do to the guy who's fucking my sister. She doesn't believe you…you know that you would choose her despite her being your soul mate. I have a hard time believing that too buddy. Go prove us wrong." Dean grumbled then heard Sam call for him and he turned leaving a frowning Castiel as he picked up his bag then pulled out his lock pick so he could go grab Adeline's.

Adeline was sitting with her back against a gravestone, not just any gravestone but her daughters. She had placed a bouquet of flowers down on the grave and now she was sitting in silence. "You'd be seven now." She contemplated not believing it had already been five years since she died. "Sorry I haven't visited since I buried you." Adeline sighed then was pleasantly surprised when Gabriel appeared with some drinks in his hands.

"Hey, figured you could use this." He sat down beside her and handed her a beer. "Thanks, thanks for the vodka the other night too." Adeline uncapped her beer and took a swig. "You wanna talk or…?" Gabriel asked her unsure he didn't really know how to handle situations like this but he wanted to try, he had always felt a certain connection to the girl he had given some of his grace too. Adeline snorted then took another drink then just looked up at the stars. "I'm good. Just sitting here is nice. I already paid my respects."

Gabriel nodded then grinned over at her. "You've been lacking in the training department." Adeline turned her head and raised an eyebrow. "I mean no running? No working on combat and when was the last time you actually shot your gun?" She rolled her eyes at the archangel.

"So…how are you and Cassie these days?" Gabriel asked her after a bit of silence. "Fine." Gabriel laughed at her answer. "We both know that's not true." Gabriel looked towards her with a toothy grin. "But I guess the two of you can talk everything out." He told her before he snapped his fingers disappearing with a laugh. Adeline then felt the tell-tale sign of Castiel's presence as she felt her skin tingle.

"Are you okay?" Castiel asked her walking towards her then looked her over trying to figure out the answer. "It's been five years." Adeline told him instead and he nodded his head then sat down beside her in the same spot Gabriel had been in. "Dean talked to me when you left." He said not knowing how to respond to her.

Adeline glanced over at him curious. "What did dear old big brother have to say?"

"He mentioned how close you and I were in the future. He thinks that you'll talk to me, let me into your mindset and ways."

Adeline snorted and took another drink then scrunched her face. Gabriel had really made this strong this time she had barely had any and she could feel her skin buzzing. "Perhaps one day, Cas."

Castiel looked at her sadly but then Adeline surprised him by grabbing his hand. "I will say this though. The soul mate thing still really freaks me out. But I'm glad it's with you." Adeline took a long gulp drink then turned towards Cas suddenly, dropping her bottle and before he knew it she had moved and was now sitting on his lap, still holding his hand. Adeline peered up at him with her sparkly green eyes, he then saw the tears in her forming and he frowned touching her face. "You're crying."

"Damn it, stupid alcohol." Adeline grumbled and wiped her eyes real quick. She took in Castiel's face then let go of his hand before she cupped his face and turned moved so she was straddling his hips. "I love you. I mean I really, really love you and I want this to work. But I am so afraid of screwing this up or of losing you Cas. I mean I suck at relationships. I mean I'm even surprised I got married let alone Dean. Hell who would have thought out of the three of us I was the one closest with the picket fence dream. I even used to have a freakin picket fence." Adeline took in a breath and Castiel opened his mouth to say something but Adeline beat him to it. "I always thought it would be Sam. He got out first, he had Jessica. Sam always wanted that life. I didn't…not really." Adeline sighed. "But by some miracle I got it only for it to all be taken away."

Castiel caressed his face and looked at Adeline worried. "Adeline, I'm sorry for your loss." He told her his heart picking up as Adeline slid one of her hands to Castiel's chest and popped open a few buttons. "It all seems too good to be true." Adeline said not meeting his eyes as she slid her other hand down to his chest and opened up more of his shirt. "I'm not going to lose you too am I?" She looked up at him again with watery eyes, starting to mess with his tie. "Never." Castiel answered her putting his forehead against hers. Wanting to kiss her but he could tell she was intoxicated and didn't want to take advantage of her.

"Adeline, I love you." Castiel whispered to her not knowing how else he could ease her pain and worries. He had no idea how Adeline had been feeling and wished she had called him. Her eyes peered up at him and gave him a smirk. Then she tipped her head and gave him a quick kiss on his lips before she moved her head down to Castiel's collarbone and licked it. She giggled when she heard Castiel's intake of breath and how his arms came around her and started kissing down his neck slowly.

"Dean said he'd kill me if I hurt you." Castiel told her trying to ignore the way she was making him feel at the moment. Adeline stopped what she was doing and touched Castiel's nose with her finger. "If you hurt me then, I would suggest running." She was looking into his eyes loving the color of them. Adeline then remembered that they were in a graveyard and were leaning on her daughter's grave. She got up off of Castiel's lap hurriedly and Castiel frowned at the loss of contact but stood up too and fixed his clothes so they were back to normal. He then heard Dean calling him.

"Adeline, Dean's calling." Castiel said and grabbed her hand. Adeline snorted then grinned, "I know, I can hear him. This part of being an angel is actually pretty annoying." Adeline tapped her foot and then the two of them found themselves in Samuel's office.

Samuel looked over at them surprised took in Adeline who seemed to sway for second before she got her balance back and she let go of the angels hand and placed it in her pocket. His eyes turned over to the man beside her. "This Castiel? You're scrawnier than I pictured."

"This is a vessel. My true form is approximately the size of your Chrysler building." Castiel told him frowning and Adeline giggled. "All right, quit bragging." Dean looked over at Adeline surprised she was still giggling some or actually giggling at all. "Is she drunk?" Castiel nodded his head. Dean sighed great, this was just great, he told Cas to talk to her not get her wasted. He turned back to Samuel figuring he would deal with that later. "Alright, so you were dead and….?"

"And, pow, I was on Elton Ridge. Don't know how. Don't know why. I got nothing to hide, guys." Samuel told them. "Well, you mind if Cas here double-checks?" Castiel rolled up his sleeve and went over to Samuel and stuck his hand in him. Samuel screamed and after a few seconds Castiel pulled his hand out and was pulling down his sleeves as Christian ran in holding up a gun.

Adeline reached down to where she usually kept her gun but then recalled she hadn't strapped it on her today and instead it was tucked away in her bag. "Woah, hold it. It's just an angel cavity search." Dean told them as Sam held his gun out. "I'm fine, Christian. Just give us a minute."

"But…"

"Just give us a minute." Samuel told him sternly. Christian nodded then walked out closing the door behind him. "What the hell was that about?" Samuel asked them. "His soul is intact." Castiel told them before he walked back over to Adeline.

"Of course I have a…."Samuel started then turned to Sam. "What's going on, Sam?"

"Whatever dragged me out…left a piece behind." Sam answered and if Adeline had been looking at Castiel instead of her brothers she probably would've seen the flash of guilt on Castiel's face before he covered it up.

"Did you know?" Sam asked seeing the lack of surprise. "No, But I….I knew it was something. I…You're a hell of a hunter, Sam, But…The truth is, sometimes you scare me. So what's the deal here how do we fix it? How do we get his soul back?"

"We don't know yet. But we have to." Dean answered him. "Well, I'm here to help, of course. What leads you working?"

"A bunch of dead ends and you."

"Well, then, we'll just have to dig." Samuel told them. "Sam, Dean, Adeline. I have to get back." Castiel interrupted their conversation, he had wanted to stay to talk to Adeline some more but Rachel was saying there was another attack on the way from Raphael's followers. "You're leaving?" Dean asked him wondering how he could just up and leave now. "I'm in the middle of a civil war." Castiel told him. Adeline had opened up the angel radio and she could hear one of the angels calling for a Cas and heard about the attack coming. She frowned wondering if she should go up there and help.

"You better tear the attic up, find something to help Sam." Dean grumbled and Adeline scowled at him. "Of course. Your problems always come first." Castiel said and Adeline grinned slightly at the sarcastic tone. She turned to Castiel and grabbed his hand in her own. "I can help you fight." Adeline told him and Castiel looked at her surprised and touched at her offer but he was shaking his head at her. "No. You're safer here, helping Sam."

Adeline snorted and rolled her eyes and decided she would fight him on the subject another time instead she grabbed the lapels of his coat and pulled him in for kiss much to Dean and Samuel's horror. She had been going for passionate kiss but it ended up just being sloppy in her slightly drunken state. Castiel touched her waist gingerly and returned her kiss before she pulled back and was smirking at him. "That's for good luck." Castiel smiled down gently at her and caressed her face wishing he could spend more time with her. "I'll be in touch." He said before he disappeared.
