'Mommy.' I say. 'Drink.'
'Here you go darling boy.' Grace says as she helps me sit and hands me a glass of water. 'Just small sips.' Taking the glass I do as I'm told and sip the water.
'Bathroom.' I mutter as Grace takes the glass from me. 'Oh I isn't in my bedroom, why is I'm here?'
'You're staying the night darling. Do you remember?' Grace asks.
'Yes.' I say uncertainly and climb out of bed. 'Mommy and daddy is staying in a hotel and then mommy comes home when I does wake up but it's still dark so I need to go back to sleep when I has had a pee.'
'Yes Matty.' Grace says with a smile.
'OK Gracie I does do that cos I is still tired and why is you in this room watching me? Hasn't you gone to sleep yet?' I ask.
'No Matty, I'm just making sure you're OK.' Grace says.
'I is now I has had a pee but can you help with the tap.' I ask.
'Of course darling.' Grace says as she comes into the bathroom. She helps me wash my hand and then dries it for me.
'Thanks Gracie. I climbs back in the bed now.' I say and make my way back into the bedroom.
'Are you feeling OK?' Grace asks.
'Yes I is fine thanks. I is just tired.' I mutter as I put my head back on the pillow. 'I sleep again now Gracie so you goes to bed as well. Night.' I say and close my eyes again.
'Night darling.' Grace says quietly as she kisses my forehead.

'Mommy.' I say as I open my eyes.
'Hey little man, did you sleep well?' mommy asks.
'Yes mommy and I is pleased to see you and I is hungry and is us going on daddy's jet today?' I ask.
'Oh Matty I'm pleased to see you as well, I missed you.' Mommy says.
'I missed you as well mommy but I has slept lots.' I say. 'Why is you staring at me funny?'
'Because I love you.' Mommy says.
'Oh.' I mutter and then suddenly remember. I sit up quickly and lift my pyjama top up. 'Them chicken spots is still there.'
'Yes darling boy.' Mommy says as Grace comes into the room.
'Look Gracie they is still here and they is the same as last night.' I say.
'So they are darling boy.' Grace says.
'Is it breakfast time cos I is hungry?' I ask.
'Sure darling, what would you like?' Grace asks.
'I has pancakes and bacon and eggs and a muffin and some milk. I gets dressed first and then come and see everyone.' I say.
'Oh Matty boy, you've slept so long that everyone has gone to school or work. They did come in to say goodbye but you were still asleep.' Mommy says.
'And daddy.' I say.
'Daddy is at work but he will be coming home to see you soon.' Mommy says.
'Is you taking me home now?' I ask.
'After breakfast darling so Grace can go to work.' Mommy says.
'But first I'm going to make a big breakfast for a hungry little boy.' Grace says.
'That's me.' I say with a giggle.
'It sure is.' Grace says as she leaves the room.
'Do you want to stay in your pyjamas or get dressed?' mommy asks me. I look at her in puzzlement. 'Matty boy you're ill, you can stay in your pyjamas even when we drive home.'
'But I doesn't feel ill mommy, I feels OK apart from them spots.' I say. 'I think I get dressed.'
'OK I'll help you.' Mommy says. I pull my pyjamas off and mommy helps me into shorts and a t-shirt.
'I hasn't got many on mine arms and legs just on my tummy.' I say.
'And on your back but only a few on your face. Hopefully that will be it and you'll be a very lucky boy.' Mommy says as we walk into the kitchen.
'New spots might appear over the next few days.' Grace says.
'I not want any more cos I has plenty.' I say.
'Not as many as Elliot had when he had them.' Grace says. 'Do you remember Sue? He was absolutely covered, I'm sure we've got a photograph somewhere. Christian and Mia were lucky as they didn't get many spots.'
'Elliot did have it bad and he was so poorly bless him.' Mommy says as I climb on a chair.
'I not have it that bad.' I say. 'Did you have fun last night mommy?'
'Yes thank you darling. Both mommy and daddy had a good time and it helped knowing that you were being very good for Grace.' Mommy says. I gulp and nod and then look at Grace with wide eyes. When is Grace going to tell her what I did?
'You were a very good boy.' Grace confirms but as she smiles at me she winks as well. I smile at her and nod. 'And now you're going to eat all this breakfast.'
'Thanks Gracie.' I say as she places it in front of me. I start to eat.
'So it was good last night?' Grace asks mommy.
'Yes it was lovely. We managed to have a good time despite knowing that this little one was ill. My first reaction was to rush back as was Simon's but I'm glad you and Carrick convinced us to stay.' Mommy says.
'Was there anyone there that we both know?' Grace asks.
'The Lincolns, for some reason Simon dislikes them both. He was rude to the point where he ignored them and turned his back on them when they approached us. I was slightly embarrassed but spoke to Elena for a few minutes. She said she'd seen you at the supermarket with Matty.' Mommy says.
'Oh that Hell Link, I didn't like her either. She was rude to you Gracie.' I say through a mouthful of food.
'Little people have big ears.' Mommy says quietly to Grace who smiles at her. I put my hands up to my ears.
'They doesn't feel big mommy, just the same size as always.' I say as they both laugh at me. 'I has had enough to eat now, thank you for making it Gracie.'
'You're most welcome and you've eaten plenty.' Grace says.
'Time to go home.' Mommy says.
'To play.' I ask.
'Yes to play.' Mommy says.
'I will miss you Gracie but thanks for looking after me and my chicken spots.' I say.
'That's OK darling boy. You've been so good you can stay again.' Grace says and she picks me up and hugs me. I hug her back and kiss her cheek as she carries me to the front door.
'Mommy I does need my backpack cos I want to play turtles when us gets home.' I say.
'Don't worry little man it's already in the car.' Mommy says. Grace hands me to mommy as she opens the door. 'Thank you so much for everything last night and looking after trouble.'
'Anytime Sue and he was no trouble. Call me at work if you need anything or are worried about anything. If the spots get worse you can always bring him in.' Grace says. 'And you be good for mommy.'
'I will Gracie and thanks for looking after me and cooking me nice things to eat and not telling mommy how naughty I has been.' I say. Mommy raises her eyebrows at Grace.
'You've seen his cast and his face was painted green like a turtle but that's nothing compared to what a normal day is like.' Grace says.
'So true.' Mommy says and kisses Grace before we leave.
'Is you cross with me mommy?' I ask as she fastens me into my car seat.
'No darling boy. I'm very pleased with you. You've been so good to sleep away from mommy and daddy all night.' Mommy says as she kisses the top of my head.
'I has been good, they say I has been good, I hope daddy is pleased if I has been good.' I sing happily to myself as mommy drives the short distance home.
'Home James.' Mommy says as she pulls up by the front door. I look around the car but there's only the two of us.
'Mommy, who is James?' I ask.
'It's just a saying darling.' Mommy says.
'Oh, I don't get that saying.' I mutter. 'Home Matty would be better.'
'You're a funny little thing.' Mommy says as we walk into the house.
'I not think I is and can I watch cartoons now and play with toys?' I ask hopefully.
'Sure little man, you go into the TV room and I'll bring some toys for you.' Mommy says.
'My legos and power rangers and turtles and all my cars and copters and planes.'
'Demanding little thing you are when you're ill.' Mommy says.
'I just knows what I want.' I say and mommy smiles.
'Always an answer for everything.' Mommy says as she heads up the stairs. I go and switch on the TV and lie on the sofa. The power rangers begin their battle scene but I'm too tired to get up and copy their moves today. I close my eyes while I wait for mommy to bring some toys. When I wake up I have a blanket over me, mommy is sat in the chair next to me reading.
'Mommy.' I say.
'Hey sleepy head. Are you OK?' she asks.
'Thirsty.' I say as I sit up slowly and rub my eyes. 'I is still tired.'
'Good, the more you sleep the quicker you'll get better. Do you want to come to the kitchen with me to get a drink?' she asks. I nod and put my arms up to be carried.
'Daddy.' I say.
'Will be home to see you very soon.' She says as she places me on the counter top by the sink. 'Water, juice, milk?'
'Bubbles.' I say hopefully.
'We haven't got any darling.' Mommy says.
'OK I just have juice and a cookie.' I say. Mommy smiles at me.
'You're pushing this illness to the limits Matty Gill but that cute smile of yours gets me every time. Would you rather have an early lunch?' she asks.
'No I'd rather just have cookies.' I say.
'OK, let's sit you down properly.' Mommy says and carries me to a chair. She then gets me some juice and puts a cookie on a plate for me. Once I've finished I climb down and head back to the TV room. Tipping all my toys out over the floor I start to play and am soon lost in my imaginary world of battles with the turtles against the power rangers. I don't hear daddy come in but when I look up he is stood watching me. He smiles and then comes and sits on the floor beside me.
'You want to play daddy?' I ask and climb on his knee for a hug.
'Sure little man. How are you feeling?' daddy asks.
'I doesn't feel any different, I just looks different cos of these spots. They will go won't they daddy, I not want to have them for forever.' I say.
'Yes buddy they will go.' Daddy says and pulls me close.
'Daddy, please you not get cross with me.' I say.
'Why?'
'I was naughty at the Greys.' I say and put my head down so that he can't see my face. He takes my chin and lifts it so that he can see my face.
'I know you painted your cast and your face so that you could be a turtle. That wasn't too bad.' Daddy says and he's still smiling.
'But I did something else.'
'Tell me.' He says.
'On the bedroom door, I wrote my name lots of times in pen.' I say. I can feel him tense. He lifts me and stands me in front of him. 'I said I was sorry daddy and I knows that I shouldn't have done it.' I have tears running down my cheeks and daddy just looks at me.
'Why did you do it?' he asks.
'Be..be..cause I…I saw M..Mia's name on her door and I wanted to be the same.' I say.
'Is there anything else you need to tell me?' daddy asks. I screw my eyes up and look at the ceiling as I try and concentrate.
'I runned away to the bottom of the garden and climbed the tree and then Wick found me and tried not to be cross.' I say. 'And I couldn't eat all my dinner cos I wasn't very well and I did tip my toys over the bedroom floor and Gracie tidied them up and I think that's it daddy. You know I is very sorry and I has thought about my behaviour and I is disappointed in myself so you don't need to be disappointed and I is also cross so you not need to be that either.'
'What am I going to do with you Matty boy?' daddy asks.
'Just don't shout or hit me cos I get scared.' I say quietly.
'Come here.' Daddy says as picks me up as he stands.
'You're not cross.' I say.
'A little bit but I don't want to scare you.' Daddy says. 'And Matty I might shout sometimes but I would never hit you, where did you get that idea from?'
'I heard you shout it once.' I say. 'Is us still going on your jet today?'
'Matty you're ill.' Daddy says.
'I told you that I doesn't feel it, please daddy.' I say.
'I need to speak to mommy.' He says.
'Give her a kiss and tell her you love her and she will say yes and you also tell her that I will be a very good boy and I not do mischief.' I say. 'I wait here and plays with my toys and you go and tells her.'
'You're on good form today little man.' Daddy says as he gives me one final hug, kisses my forehead and puts me back down on the rug.
'Hurry daddy.' I say as I pick up a plane and a turtle from the floor. After a few minutes I stand and head into the kitchen, the door to the garden is open but I can't see mommy and daddy. I look at the two turtles and the plane in my hands and go outside. I look behind me and think they must both be busy so I run down to the climbing frame. I stuff the toys into my pocket and then manage to climb to the top. I feel pleased with myself because Elliot normally helps me. Getting the plane and turtles out of my pocket I smile and throw them over the side to see how well they can fly. Grinning I climb down, retrieve the toys and climb back up again. As I release them this time I hear mommy calling me.
'Matty. Matty. Matthew.' She shouts.
'Where the hell is he? He was supposed to stay in the TV room with his toys.' I hear daddy say. I gulp and crouch down so they won't see me. 'He won't know what's hit him when I find him.'
'Simon, no wonder he gets scared of you. Watch what you're saying and keep calm. He won't have gone far.' Mommy says more gently. 'Look, there's two turtles here and a plane.'
'Matty.' daddy shouts. I peek out from the side of the climbing frame, he's running his hand through his hair. I watch as he picks the toys up and he puts them in his pocket.
'Matty boy are you hiding?' mommy asks.
'Yes mommy but I is safe.' I say. A minute later and daddy is at the top of the frame with me. 'Please daddy, I not want to know what will hit me. Please not hurt me.'
'Little man. I'm sorry I was angry I shouldn't have said it.' He says as he picks me up and hugs me. 'You just scared mommy and daddy that's all.'
'I was just giving the turtles a flying lesson so that they would know what it's like to go on the jet plane daddy.' I say.
'Next time come and find me or mommy and we will come with you.' Daddy says as he kisses my cheek. 'I think mommy needs a hug as well.' He carries me back down to ground level and mommy comes to hug us both.
'Lunchtime.' Mommy says.
'And then us all go on daddy's jet?' I ask hopefully.
'No I think we need to take a trip to the hospital first.' Daddy says. I gulp, I don't want to go to the hospital. 'We're going to get a new cast and this time I'm going to choose the color.'
'Please can it be blue or green?' I ask and daddy laughs.
'We'll see little man. Hopefully we will see Grace and we'll get her to check you out and only if she says it's OK will we go to Miami.' Daddy says.
'I'll tell Gracie I love her and she will say yes.' I say and this time both mommy and daddy laugh.
