Chapter Thirty-Six . . . The Fight
Once the scream left Sam's lips, I sprung out of my fear locked position and started to move. The hand's tightened around the boy's ankles. The fall knocked the breath out of him, silencing him for the moment, but after a quick two second's passed, he was screaming again.
I dropped the bar and went for Sam's arms, and pulled as hard as I could. Sam's hand's wrapped around my wrists not letting me go.
I could see the wolf-man underneath the car; I could smell his nasty musk. He was spread out on his hairy belly and grinning wildly, drool dropping from his jaws.
I pulled with all the might I had left and Sam slid towards me. But the wolf-man came as well, wriggling out from under the car, not loosening his grip.
I stopped pulling Sam and let go. Sam protested at first with a whine but I quickly gestured towards the bar and he let go. I quickly picked it up and start hitting the wolf-man, on his outstretched arms, his face, whatever I could hit.
The wolf-man growled and howled angrily, releasing Sam, and turning his attention towards me for the few seconds.
"Run damnit!" I yelled pulling Sam to his feet.
We sprinted towards the guards house, I made sure he was in front, just in case the wolf-man was closing in behind us. And I could hear him, the wolf-man scrambling to get the rest of himself out from under the car.
The bastard had been playing with us, but not anymore, he was pissed. I knew he'd come after us with everything he had. He knew we couldn't make it to the guard's house, he'd catch us before we were halfway across the yard. The games were over and we both had the intent to kill.
"Keep running!" I gasped to my friend and stopped moving and looked back to meet the charge of the oncoming beast.
My sudden actions took the beast by surprise and he ran into me, knocking us both over. His body was hairy, sweaty, and gross! With some luck I smacked him with the iron bar and was able to free myself before he had me pinned.
He roared angrily and then swiped at me. I didn't have the luck to dodge this, his claw connected with my shirt, ripping it wide open and leaving claw marks across my chest, which started to bleed. I tensed up at the pain. Shit...
The wolf-man was ready before I was and almost got my arm, but I stumbled back. Oh, there's my luck. He stood slowly, to his real height, grinning so darkly the Cheshire cat would be jealous.
From his dark colored orbs, I could read his expression and the words left unsaid, and what they said were: "Now, little boy, I'm going to rip you apart! Then go for your friend!"
I swung the bar once more, the wolf-man caught it and ripped it from my hands, flinging it somewhere in the darkness. I took a few steps back, I had no weapon, no shield, nothing, I was exposed and ready to be eaten.
He reached out to grab me, but I easily got away, and took off running towards the guard's house, the wolf-man hot on my heels.
I didn't get far before he leaped at me, forcing me down to the ground. I shivered when he growled in my ear. I couldn't only think of Sam at this time, I hoped he was safe, he was at the guard's house.
I closed my eyes, it was a little dramatic, but I could afford it, I mean I was going to die here and I wanted to take the idea that Sam was safe with me.
CLUNK!
I wasn't expecting that nose and reopened my eyes; the wolf-man was no longer on me. With that I quickly jumped to my feet and looked behind me. Sam was holding a giant piece of wood, he swung and hit the wolf-man again. This time the wolf-man didn't seem like he was getting back up.
"Sam you moron!" I yelled grabbing his arm and pulling him with me as we continued to run to the guard's house. "What in the hell were you thinking!?"
"One good turn deserves another!" He replied.
"What?" I asked not understanding anything he just said.
"I'll tell you later!" He yelled then pointed towards the building.
"Look there it is!"
Relief washed over me, we were right there! Right there! We could make it! We could make it! I couldn't help but to smile big, luck was still on my side, well just for the few seconds it was.
I felt a strong hand push me forward; I lost my footing and fell face first to the ground. I couldn't tell you now what was there, what my head hit, whatever it was knocked me out. I always guessed it was a giant rock that I hit. But I passed out, bringing Sam to the ground with me.
My body ached when I came back to life. I couldn't move anything, my body felt like lead. My head - Oh! My head! - I groaned loudly as I forced my body to move. How much time had passed? Everything was quiet...Why? Why was everything quiet? I started to panic; I didn't hear any screaming or running! What...What was going on!?
Sam! Where was Sam?!
I was on all fours and almost threw up; it was nothing but a dry heave. I couldn't see, everything was black. Shit, why was I blind now?! I would rather be blind the rest of my life if I could just see what was happening!
I strained my ears to listen harder, nothing, and all I could hear was the ringing. Damnit! I was up on my feet, my vision starting to clear. I could barely see but blurry shapes. I took the first off balance step, and almost fell back to the ground.
The second step, I was back to the ground. Where was everyone?! Did Sam make it to the guard's house?! I picked myself back up, the ringing in my ears stopped and my vision was much better. My dark orbs took a few extra-long seconds to adjust to the darkness.
Munch...
Munch...? It almost sounded like crunch. Did I step on something?
The pain in my head was at max, I didn't think I could stand the pain in my head. I wanted to touch my head, but couldn't. My hands wouldn't move, all I could do was use my feet and hope that my vision would quickly clear.
Munch. . .
My vision and hearing was a lot better than the last few seconds. I that wasn't crunch, I didn't step on anything. That was the sound of someone eating. My vision cleared and there crouching on all fours, head bent over something, was the wolf-man. I could only see his back, but I knew that he was the one making those noises.
What the hell was he eating...? It took me another seconds and a few munching noise for my brain to click.
SAM!
My pain was forgotten at this second and rushed forward. But one look at the bloody mess beneath the wolf-man and I knew I was far too late.
"Damnit!" I screamed and started wildly punching the wolf man, attacking senselessly.
The first time he grunted and shoved me away, but with this new little burst of energy, and the pain gone, I was back up and started attacking again. He growled darkly and shoved me away, but this time I had a strong hold of his ears and some of his hair.
He howled then finally lifted his mouth. I once again almost threw up, it was red, a dark awful red, full of guts, blood and pieces of flesh and bone.
Leaving the body of Sam his attention was back towards me. With little ease he knocked me to the ground, pinning me with his weight. He howled into the sky, as if letting someone know that he was about to kill again. Then with a demonic snarl, he drove his teeth towards my throat, meaning to finish me off with one quick bite.
Damn...Was this the end of me? I couldn't even save Sam, what kind of friend am I?
