She lies still, eyes closed, immersed in her dreams, when the first sign of emotion suddenly appears…
A tear falls ever so slowly and ever so gently from the corner of her eye…
Chapter 35: Can Emily get to Maya in Time?
Rosewood…
"Mom! Let's go!" Emily yells up the stairs. "Dad's already outside waiting! Are you coming?"
"Hold your horses," she says as she walks down the stairs. "You know I always need to check and recheck everything before we go."
"Yeah, I know but Maya needs me," she says heartbreakingly. "Mom, we need to go now."
"Honey, okay. Everything seems to be in order. Let's go bring Maya back to us," she smiles endearingly embracing her daughter.
Emily pulls away smiling briefly then takes a breath, "Yeah, let's bring Maya back."
They walk out of the house together; Mrs. Fields locks up while Emily helps her dad pack the rest of their things into the car. They drive away from the house en route to the Philadelphia airport. Emily sits in the back seat anxious to get to her Maya, anxious to save her from the hell holding her mind hostage…
Point Loma, CA…
"Mrs. St. Germain, can I ask you something?"
"Of course, Chelsea, what is it?"
"Well, I was wondering if I could take Maya to the cliffs after dinner."
"The cliffs! Why, whatever for?"
"I was thinking that the whole point of Maya being home is to try to bring her back to us. And what better way than to bring her to a place that has so many memories for her. I mean, the doctor said she should be exposed to as much familiarity as she can, right?" Chelsea is hopeful she'll come around.
"Yes, Chelsea, but she just got home yesterday. And we all know what happened at the cliffs." she doesn't like this.
"Mrs. St. Germain, please don't take this the wrong way but shouldn't we be doing whatever needs to be done to jar her out of this state she's in?"
"Yes but…"
"But the longer we wait the harder it's going to be to get her back," she states quite convincingly.
"I don't know. Emily's on her way. I think we should wait for her. She's the one who has the best chance of breaking her out of this, I can feel it," she's says with the utmost hopefulness.
"Okay then, how about a compromise."
"Like what?"
"Noel was going to come over later. So why don't we take her for a walk just short of the cliffs. The fresh air will probably do her good. What do ya think?" She knows she'll say yes.
"That, I can agree too. I don't want her going over there. And I'll feel much better with the two of you taking her then you going alone especially since that wheelchair and monitor aren't so easy to manipulate by yourself."
"Agreed. You're right and I would feel better having Noel along too. So, we'll be by after dinner to go for that stroll. And I have a feeling that everything will be as it should."
"Be as it should?"
"Maya being Maya again, of course!" she smiles deceptively thinking it's better this way. Now she doesn't need to sneak her out and won't have those monitors to deal with, since her poor clueless parents will have taken care of that for her.
She burrows her eyes into the back of Mrs. St. Germain's head thinking, "Maya will be Maya but not the way you think!"
And off she goes to prepare for her revenge. With Noel and –A by her side, nothing can stop her from the justice she feels she deserves, especially not Emily Fields. For this time it really will be Maya she watches being carted away in a body bag…
She shakes the chills from her body releasing her of her demented thoughts. She has a lot of work to do before her revenge can be satisfied…
Philadelphia…
Emily sits on the plane, her leg constantly in motion until her mother places her hand over her knee to calm her. She doesn't even realize she's doing it and gives her mom a shy smile and a whispered, "Sorry."
"Emily, its fine. We'll get there and everything will be right again," she assures her.
"I know it will. I just wish I could snap my fingers and be there already," she slinks back into her seat.
"That would be nice but for now just know we'll get there. Try to think of what you'll say to her when you do see her. I'm afraid it's not going to be like Sleeping Beauty, a kiss and she awakens. Her brain might need to process that you're alive and well. So think about that. Think about what you want to say to Maya to bring her back to you," she squeezes her knee and smiles hoping her daughter will concentrate on this helping her to pass the time.
Pam hooks her arm with Wayne's, laying her head against his shoulder. She's not so sure she would be as strong if it was Wayne that this had happened too. She just hopes that Emily will be…
As the plane takes off from the runway, so do Emily's thoughts about what she's going to say once she finally sees her…
"Maya, how are you?" stupid!
"Maya it's me, Emily"…that's so lame.
"Maya, I love you more than"….ugh!
"Maya, it's me, your baby, the love of your life, the one who owns your heart. The one whose heart is owned by you…"
She looks out the window as a tear rolls down her face and a smile forms across her lips. The words are flowing so easily. She doesn't even need to memorize them because they're embedded in her soul. More and more the words come freely to her, soaking her with emotion. She can feel her heart begin to heal the closer and closer they get to California, the closer and closer she gets to Maya. And soon Maya's heart, too, will be healed and their love will grow stronger and once again they will belong to one another totally and completely…
Point Loma…
"Hey, how's Maya doing?" Chelsea asks sounding genuinely concerned but not really.
"Her mom and the nurse are getting her ready for that walk," Mr. St. Germain tells her. "They've attached the monitor to her wheelchair so you don't need to worry about that. Just take your time and if anything happens, any movement, anything, you call us. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Mr. St. Germain, absolutely, I'll call right away," she lies.
"Well the sun will be setting soon so why don't you get going so you can be back shortly afterwards," Aunt Maren suggests.
"Sure, no problem, now, is she ready?" Chelsea asks impatiently.
The nurse wheels her out of the bedroom with a blanket tucked snuggly around her and a small travel pillow helping to support her neck and her head. The monitor is attached to the wheelchair and the nurse shows Chelsea what to do if her levels rise or fall.
"Got it. Noel and I will take great care of her."
And just as the words leave her mouth there's a knock at the door, "Hello, can I come in?"
"Noel, of course," Aunt Maren extends her hand to welcome him.
He hugs her and Maya's mom and shakes her dad's hand.
"I'm counting on you, Noel, to keep her safe," he says sternly still holding onto him.
"Yes, sir, you can count on me," he can't even look him in the eyes, instead he looks at Maya.
She's so helpless, not at all the Maya he has grown to care so much about. The dark circles under her eyes from staying awake for hours and hours. She looks so tired. She looks so thin. She looks so weak. It's difficult for him to see her like this because Maya is strong. Maya is confident. Maya could take on the world if she had to. But not like this. He forces a smile and helps Mr. St. Germain bring her outside.
"You both have your cell phones so we can reach you or you can reach us?" Mrs. St. Germain asks.
"Yes. You can call whenever you want and we'll call you if we need anything. Okay?" Chelsea tries to assure them that Maya is in good hands.
The nurse says good night and leaves for the evening behind Chelsea and Noel who slowly walk to the paved path toward the cliffs, making small talk with Maya,
"See Maya that was a piece of cake. I still can't believe how easy that was," she says as Noel carefully pushes her along the smooth trail.
"Chelsea, stop it. Why is it so important for him to be there?"
"You know why? He's still coming isn't he Noel?"
"Yes. I told you he wants to help. He'll be at the cliffs just like you planned for him to be."
"Noel, I can't take all the credit for this plan. I'm not sure it would've worked if you didn't convince him to come," she grabs his arm strolling beside him while Maya remains unresponsive.
"Well, I hope he can snap her out of this. I don't like how we're going about it but I'm not sure we have a choice."
"No, we don't," she clamps onto his arm tightly. "We better move it along otherwise the St. Germains might come looking for us and we don't want that, now do we?"
"The less they know the better I guess."
But little does Noel know that Emily is on her way. However, Chelsea already knows as –A has informed her making the evening exactly how she envisioned it. A smile curves at the corner of her mouth. Two lovers giving their lives for one another, finally putting an end to this fairy tale love story…
San Diego…
"Emily, we can't just leave. We have to get our bags and then we'll go to Maya," Pam tries not to be scolding but fails miserably.
Wayne pulls Pam to the side away from Emily, "Look Pam, she's right we're wasting valuable time that she could be using to get through to Maya. We'll put her in a cab and we'll get the bags and meet her there."
"Are you sure you want her to do that?" she asks concerned.
"We'll only get in the way. Let's do this for her, okay?" he convinces her.
"Okay, okay."
They walk back over to their daughter, "Emmy, your mom and I are going to let you go to Maya and we'll meet up with you later."
"Oh dad!" She leaps in to his arms. "Thank you! Mom! I love you both so much!" She crashes into her mother's arms.
"Now wait a minute, we'll walk out with you and get you set up with a cab," her mom says with a worrisome tone.
Emily is elated as she jumps in the back seat throwing kisses to her parents on her way to save her girl.
"We did the right thing by letting her go, didn't we?" she asks not wanting to regret their decision.
"Yeah, we did the right thing," Wayne hopes.
Point Loma…
Emily gets to Aunt Maren's in forty-five minutes. She throws the driver a wad of cash and rushes to the door. She knocks repeatedly until Aunt Maren opens the door.
"Emily! You're here!"
"Where is she? Where's Maya? I need to see her! I need to show her that I'm okay!" she fast talks completely out of breath.
"Emily, we didn't know you would be here so soon."
"But I am. So where is she?"
"She's gone," Mr. St. Germain replies.
"What!"
"No, no, sorry, her dad didn't mean to freak you out. She went for a walk," Mrs. St. Germain gives her husband a look.
"A walk? How is she able to do that?" Emily sounds confused.
"Noel and Chelsea took her."
"Chelsea? Where did they take her?" Now she sounds concerned.
"Down the path towards the cliffs but we told them not to go that far. They should be back soon. Why don't you stay here and…"
But before she can say anything more, Emily pushes passed Aunt Maren out the door. She finds the footpath and runs hard, as fast as she can, not knowing what Chelsea has up her sleeve. Why the cliffs? And why now?
She stops to catch her breath and when she looks up she notices movement in the distance. She knows that Noel and Chelsea are there with her but who are those other people and what do any of them have to do with Maya?
She takes a few steps closer. She focuses hard. She realizes at least one other person is wearing a hood. Her eyes widen! Her hands cover her mouth!
"-A!" she screams, muffling her cries against her flesh!
She takes in a breath needing to get to her. Needing to stop whatever this is. Needing to help the love of her life. Needing to save her Maya…
