Prompt credit, erinchristmaselvis! "Kensi injured in the field doesn't remember Deeks."
The pavement was cold and rough as she tried to push off and gain her bearings. The ringing in her ears was deafening. Slowly opening her eyes, she could see an unfamiliar blond man, shouting mutely at her. Who was he? Why couldn't she hear him?
Blinking her eyes and shaking her head, trying to jar loose whatever was making everything so fuzzy. The stranger grasping her elbow familiarly, helping her to her feet. She could see the blurred image of Callen approaching her from the distance. The man at her side was still speaking, his words finally breaking through the buzzing that still wouldn't leave her ears.
"Kens. Kens, look at me. You hit your head pretty hard. You gotta run when Sam says run, Fern."
Clearly, this man knew her, and Sam. Why couldn't she place him? And who was Fern? Callen was close enough now that she could hear what he was saying.
"You guys good, Deeks? We lost coms."
"I'm good. Still haven't gotten Sunshine here to respond. She hit her head pretty good. She's gonna say she's fine, but we should probably call an ambulance."
"I'm right here. And I'm fine."
"See, told you. At least her hearing's coming back." The man grabbed her elbow again, leading her away from the scene of the explosion.
"C'mon, Princess. Let's at least find you a place to sit."
"I'm fine. And I'm sorry..." she scanned him up and down, seeing a LAPD badge at his belt, "Detective, I'll be rejoining my team. And I don't appreciate the familiarity of your tone."
"Whoa. Awful formal there partner." He motioned for Callen to return as Kensi began to sway on her feet. Staring back into her eyes, he didn't see the typical recognition staring back. "Kens...what year is it?"
"It's 2009, and I prefer Agent Blye." She tried to remain steady, defiant even as she continued to sway, Deeks and Callen both catching an arm before she fell back to the pavement as she lost consciousness.
"You catch that?" Deeks said, trying his best to keep his tone even.
Not answering, Callen had already pulled out his cell and was instructing Eric to rush the ambulance. Deeks lowered Kensi to the ground, propping her up against his side.
"C'mon, Sugarbear. Wake up. Let's try and remember me this time. As much as joke about wanting a do-over sometimes, I really don't want to repeat the last five years." Smoothing her hair, checking to make sure she kept breathing, he waited til medical help arrived. Kissing the top of her head, before passing her off to the medics, he whispered.
"Please remember me Fern."
