"Silver, go get the roots."
Moonpaw's fur bristled as she looked into her mentor's angry eyes. This was the one time where it wasn't her fault, and Twigpelt threatened to unapprentice her! Honestly, how do you even do that?
"Now."
Moonpaw swallowed. "Yes, Twigpelt." She crept away. Briarpaw started to follow her, but Twigpelt ordered the tortoiseshell to return to camp. Okay, Moonpaw should have been more careful when talking about the prophecy, but that tomcat was being ridiculous.
"Honestly, Twigpelt!" Mistblossom's voice rang through the forest. "Kick her out? Like that would serve any practical purpose - but then, you always cared more about your feelings than doing what was best." She sniffed. "I'm sorry, I don't think I can stand being around you for any longer."
"Wait!" Twigpelt said. "I still need to ask you something."
"Tough."
Moonpaw could hear her mother leaving.
"You wanted to ask me something too, didn't you?" Twigpelt sounded almost desperate.
The sound of Mistblossom's footsteps paused for a moment. "Yes, as a matter of fact."
"Then come back."
Moonpaw couldn't resist. She paused, crouched under a bush, to listen to their conversation.
"Why haven't you started teaching Moonpaw about prophecies yet?"
Huh. It was true; Twigpelt hadn't been showing her anything about omens and stuff. But Moonpaw didn't really have any way of knowing what was normal for medicine cat training, so she never thought about it much.
Twigpelt huffed. "What makes you think I haven't?"
"I know you. I know you wouldn't."
"Then surely you also know why I haven't taught her much."
Why? Moonpaw leaned forward.
"Yes, perhaps I do know. But I want you to start telling her about the more mystical aspects of being a medicine cat."
Twigpelt hissed irritably. "Well, maybe you haven't noticed, but you're not a medicine cat. Teaching your daughter is my job."
"But she's a medicine cat! What's the point of being a medicine cat if no one tells you how to fulfill all your jobs?"
"Why should I tell her secrets when I know she'll never make it as a medicine cat?"
"Twigpelt! You wouldn't kick her out."
"Oh, she'll probably just back out on her own once she realizes that being a medicine cat has downsides."
"Like being trained by you for example? You know, for that reason alone, I hope she does quit! StarClan knows you don't deserve an apprentice!"
"Mistblossom..." Twigpelt growled.
"What? You don't!"
"I- I- Forget it."
"That seems to be your goal in life. Forget your responsibilities, forget your Clan, forget your patients, forget your friends, remember your mentor. Oh, yes, remember your mentor. Remember her to death! Not your death of course. Other cats' death."
"Look!" Twigpelt was nearly shouting. "Speaking of death, I would like to ask you the question I meant to ask in the first place!"
"Maybe I don't feel like answering it."
"It's just about... did Silver tell you anything recently about... um..."
"Spit it out."
"Anything about..." Twigpelt twitched his tail nervously.
"The super secret prophecy that you were trying to stop her from mentioning?"
"It's not a prophecy! It's a prediction!"
"Now, where have I heard you say that before?"
"Prophecies are stuff like 'when the moon turns to blood and all hope is lost, turn to the one who has turned from the stones.' "
Mistblossom widened her eyes. "Moonpaw will turn to blood?"
"No! That was just a random example, it's not a real prophecy! My point is, this was more straightforwardly telling what was going to happen."
Mistblossom huffed. "Why doesn't StarClan just tell all of their prophecies that way? Straightforwardly?"
Twigpelt sighed. "I already told you why a long time ago. Just tell me if Silver told you about a prediction."
Mistblossom narrowed her eyes, her tail flicking back and forth.
"And don't lie. Just tell me, please. It'll make everything easier."
"Well..."
"Oh, forget it!" Twigpelt said. "From your manner, I can tell that she didn't inform you. Now good bye - and I'm looking forward to the time when your daughter goes back to being a warrior!"
Moonpaw quickly scrambled away to find the roots - couldn't have Twigpelt catch her slacking off. I can be a medicine cat.
But... should she?
That was kinda short. Sorry. Anyways, the next chapter should be up sometime between now and Saturday. Please review!
