"It's gone," Addie whispered, her eyes not leaving the ground. In all the time that I had known her, she had never looked so... so, defeated. It was obvious that she was holding back tears.
I kneeled besides her and shook her shoulder, "What's wrong, Addie?" I asked her, from the position I was at, I could see the tears brimming in her eyes. I was uniquely worried, some thing wasn't right. Well, of course something was never right with Addie, but this was different then when she had nightmares, it was deeper. All of the sudden, she pushed me away from her. Surprised was an understatement, and I was... surprised and hurt.
"I'm paralyzed, ok!" she yelled and my blood ran cold. She was paralyzed, I had known that it was going to happen eventually, she told me as such. But nonetheless, it was shocking. Sure, she had been stuck in a wheelchair the past year, but she had the use of one leg. She could have gotten automail, but now... "I'm freaking useless! You don't have to teach me alchemy anymore, you can leave me at the nearest train station if you want!" she looked scattered and frightened.
That shocked me the most, Addie was frightened, the same Addie that had taken on . But, just leave her at some random train station?! Did she think that just being paralyzed made anything different? "Addie-" I started but she cut me off.
"DON'T 'ADDIE' ME! Ok, I understand if you don't want to teach me alchemy anymore, just don't be nice to me if you don't mean it!" she buried her face in one of her elbows, using the other arm to keep herself up. Her shoulders were shaking and I knew that she was crying.
I stood in front of her, looking down at her quivering form, "Addie, you're no different now. If you're going to let being paralyzed keep you from learning alchemy then you don't deserve to learn it. But I know you, you didn't let being down one leg keep you from learning alchemy, then being down two shouldn't be any different. The Addie I know wouldn't let this beat her." Despite what she may think, being paralyzed made her no different then me or Al. She might just be stronger then us too, truth knows how much she's had to put up with in the past year.
"You would seriously keep a paralyzed apprentice?" she asked, using the sleeve of her purple shirt to dry her face.
"Defiantly, besides, what would Al and I do without you?" I asked, a smile almost finding itself to my lips.
She sighed, the spark that made her so interesting was back. "Oh you know Bean Sprout," I winced at the nick name,"crash and burn. You two are too dim-witted for your own good," she smiled and I found, that I really liked it when she smiled. But it was fake, it would be impossible for her to be even remotely happy after losing both of her legs. "Now the real problem is getting me off this floor," she looked around for what I could only guess to help her up.
"I'm going to have to carry you," I told her. Her cheeks flamed as she nodded. I put my automail arm underneath her leg and the other one behind her back. She squeaked when I lifted her up with a little difficultly. "Lay off the cheeseburgers will ya?" I teased, trying to lighten her mood.
She punched my chest, but there wasn't any real power in it. "Oh shut up! You eat just as much as me," her cheeks were on fire, but it didn't help the fact that she was most obviously crying on the inside, "I swear to god, if you drop me!"
"Oh calm down, I'm not going to drop you," I answered. She crossed her arms and looked forward, obviously not talking to me. She had twisted her face in to a sad pout, that I found (with surprise) cute.
"Bean Sprout, if you tell anyone that you carried me, I swear to god that I will poison your next meal with night lock," she was obviously pissed, well obviously, who wouldn't be after finding out that they lost all feeling below the waist. I remember how I felt after I lost my own leg, that feeling of hopelessness, but at least I had Al, Granny, and Winry. Who does Addie have? Al and I? We're sucky substitutes for family. If I hadn't froze up, then Addie wouldn't have had to fight for me, and she wouldn't have... "Stop it Ed," her voice pulled me from my thoughts.
"Stop what?" I asked.
"Blaming yourself, ya know you're a big idiot, and I can see right through you. You don't have to carry the weight of the world on you're shoulders all the time," I opened my mouth to object but she interrupted me, "You got to remember that I'm here too, and so is Al. It my not seem like it, but Al isn't a kid anymore, he's almost 15, he can handle things. Despite what you think, you don't have to do things all on your own anymore. I want to help." She wouldn't look me in the eyes, and her face was lined with worry and pain.
"Addie-" she cut me off again.
"So just stop being such a moron and let me help out," she looked up, her bluish green eyes clashing with my amber ones, "can you at least do that?"
I looked worriedly at her, "It's not your problem, why do you want to help out so much?"
She frowned, "What is that suppose to mean? I'm you're friend, no matter how much you annoy me. Friends don't let other friends live the worst existence on the face of the earth. I care about you and Al, and you guys deserve to get you're bodies back after what you've been through," she explained.
I looked at her shell shocked for a second, then I heard talking and pulled us out of our conversation. Looking ahead I found that it was the Liorians. As we got closer, I found that Lira was standing there, waiting for us. "Oh god, Ed-" I looked down at Addie and I saw her face twist in agony before she passed out.
I stopped dead in my tracks, "Addie?" I shook her, hoping she would wake up.
I felt a hand on my shoulder suddenly, "Relax Edward, she just passed out, she's fine," I looked up to find Lira, how did she get here so fast?
