They stay in the wilderness until spring, for Fai's magic has grown with him, and Leiyos rightly assumes that it is better for him to learn control by himself. For there are no guarantees regarding the future.
Fai becomes an expert at using magic for defense and offense, experimenting with self-taught spells.
Leiyos' silent permission gives Fai warning enough of what to expect when they return.
The time of their absence passed quickly in the barracks, so when Leiyos walks in, followed by a tall, slender young man, it takes everyone a while to register who the young man is.
