"Derek, thank you" Meredith said as she wrapped her arms around his torso. Emma had gone down for a nap, all the morning travel knocked her out for a good nap that gave Meredith and Derek some time to unpack and settle in. Derek had gone all out and got the Deluxe package stay with Birthday Snow Surprise package for Emma. It included a two-bedroom suite almost the size of their apartment that had large windows in the larger bedroom that overlooked the mountains and the ski resort.
"Hey, it's not everyday you get to turn four" Derek smiled kissing her forehead and holding her closer
"But you didn't have to do all of this, she would have been happy had we just had a cake at home" Meredith smiled as she turned to her back was to torso and they both faced outwards to the window
"I just wanted to do something special, because last year I couldn't be with her for her birthday and she remembers that. But I also wanted to do something special for you. Because you carried her for nine months and you are the one that gave me a child. You are an amazing woman" he said nuzzling his nose into her hair
"Derek" Meredith protested
"No, Meredith you are. You are a med student that is in the top of her class, raising a young daughter that she had during her undergraduate career with a stupid brain man that was finishing up medical school and ended up moving across the country. Most people would fall apart but you, you pull through and you support her and me. I mean you were the sleep deprived first year medical student rooting for me when I wanted to stop the neuro fellowship and stay general. You pushed me to be the best I could be all while taking care of our daughter and keeping up with your studies. You are extraordinary. "
"Oh you are so getting laid tonight" Meredith smiled as she turned to face him and tipped her head upwards for a kiss
"Good thing I got the two bedroom" Derek chuckled
"I say Emma still plans to sleep in our bed tonight, you know how she gets in unfamiliar places"
"There's a couch" Derek said suggestively
"I'm too old for that" Meredith giggled
"Whatever" Derek chuckled
"I'm sorry, you're too old for those shenanigans" Meredith laughed
(The neighbors might think) Baby, it's bad out there
(Say what's in this drink) No cabs to be had out there
(I wish I knew how) Your eyes are like starlight now
(To break this spell) I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
"Mommy look!" Emma squealed as the instructor helped her learn to ski
'"You're doing great baby" Meredith smiled as she took a few pictures with her phone. They were going to have a quiet few days as a family before Mitchell arrived with his two girls. Derek had paid for their trip as well. As much as Derek did not like Mitchell at first, it was because he thought he was after Meredith. But after meeting hi a few times, he knew why Meredith always hung out with him before; he was someone she could relate to. Mitchell was a single dad of two trying to get his MD so he could provide a better future for his girls… especially since their mom left.
"You're gonna be as good as Daddy soon" Derek chuckled a he also took some video of Emma
"I think you are already better, Ems" Meredith giggled
"You don't even ski" Derek laughed teasingly towards Meredith
"Because I snowboard" Meredith said sticking her tongue out at him "Which is for the cool young kids"
"She looks so cute" Derek smiled. Emma in a snowsuit was one of the cutest things he's even seen. She looked like a purple marshmallow.
"Alright miss Emma you did a great job, I'll see you again tomorrow" The instructor said. Meredith and Derek thought it'd be nice for Emma to have a few lessons before Mitchell's girls got here. Naturally with them being older they'd be able to catch to catch on quicker.
"You did great princess" Derek said picking Emma up. The sun was beginning to set and they had plans for a nice family dinner and some snow fun for Emma.
Flashback
Meredith was sure she was dreaming… A New York White Christmas… it was her reality. It was their first Christmas as a family. Emma was 9 months old and some how Derek managed to get a week off so they could spend Christmas in New York with his family. The snow, the music, the happy… it was all playing out in front of her.
"What are you thinking about" Derek said softly as he wrapped his arms around her torso.
"It's just perfect" Meredith said softly
"So our snowflake is awake upstairs, I think she's ready for Christmas lunch and her first time to play in the snow" Derek smiled taking her hand and leading her up the stairs of his childhood home where he and Meredith were staying during their trip. Although Meredith had insisted that they stay in a hotel since they had a baby, Carolyn wanted to spend as much time as possible with her granddaughter, even if that meant waking up in the middle of the night to help soothe the baby back to sleep.
"She looks like a snowball" Meredith giggled as she zipped Emma in the white snow weather onesie Derek's sister had bought Emma for Christmas.
"A very cute snowball" Derek said rubbing his nose against Emma's nose causing the baby to giggle. They headed downstairs where most of the family was already outside playing in snow that was on the ground that had fallen overnight.
"She literally blends in with the snow" Meredith giggled taking a photo of Emma on her phone. Emma was sitting in the snow trying to move around but her outfit made it rather difficult… eventually she just plopped over onto her back
"Emma" Derek gasped expecting a cry only to be surprised to hear a giggle as his daughter squirmed on her back in attempt to flip over
"She's making a snow angel" Meredith giggled. Just then Emma managed to flip over and started to crawl through the snow, giggled with every crawl. Soon Derek was off playing snowball fight with his nieces and nephews leaving Meredith and Emma to play with snow on the patio. Carolyn made sure that they all knew the patio was off limits to prevent Emma from getting hit by a flying snowball, knowing how intense their games got, especially if Uncle Derek or Uncle Mark were playing.
"She's getting so big" Carolyn said as she sat with Meredith
"I know, soon she'll be walking… she's been standing up and holding onto her crib at home" Meredith said as Emma slammed her hands down in the snow "Dada" she squealed
"Her favorite word… I do all the work and he gets all the love" Meredith laughed
"Look Emma a snowball for your daddy" Carolyn said handing Emma a small snowball she had made
"Ba" Emma giggled
"She's a smart little girl" Carolyn said
"She takes after Daddy" Meredith replied
"You're smarter than he is, and you know it" Carolyn laughed and smiled at Meredith
"Don't tell him that, it'll deflate his ego" Meredith laughed "Well actually maybe it'll help deflate his ego the size of Texas these days"
"There are my favorite ladies" Derek said as he walked up towards the house. He was covered in snow
"Dada" Emma shouted
"Emma!" Derek smiled
"Hey Derek" Meredith smiled "Think Fast" she said taking the snowball from Emma's hand and throwing it at him, hitting him square in the chest
"Hey" Derek said, he reached down to make a snowball and was about to throw it when Meredith held Emma close to her.
"I have a baby" Meredith laughed
"Fine you're safe for now, but when she goes for a nap game on" Derek laughed
"Let's get her inside" Carolyn said "Wouldn't want her catching a cold"

"Happy Birthday dear Emma" Derek and Meredith sang along with the restaurant waitresses. "Happy Birthday to you"
"Make a wish" Derek said as he held the camera to capture the moment
"Yay!" everybody cheered when Emma blew out her candles.
"Happy Birthday Emma" The waiters and waitresses said as they left the table. Typically only one two came to sing but Emma had captivated everybody that worked there
"Momma, snow?" Emma asked with her faced covered in the chocolate cake
"You're not tired?" Meredith asked knowing her bedtime was approaching
"I want to make snowman" Emma said softly
"I think we can stay up a little later than normal, please mommy?" Derek asked pouting his lip out
"That face doesn't work for you, but yes… we can stay up late tonight, today is a big day" Meredith smiled
"She is out" Meredith said as she walked into the bedroom. Emma had passed out on the couch after her bath, it was quite the scene. Their daughter had stayed up two hours past bedtime and protested bed. Meredith didn't want to fight her and gave Emma her tablet knowing that most likely Emma would fall asleep watching whatever video was on her tablet.
"She had a big day" Derek said emerging from the bathroom towel drying his hair before tossing the towel on the ground. He had just gotten out of the shower and was dressed only in his briefs. Meredith smiled as she admired his sculpted body
"You should walk around like this more often" Meredith murmured as he pressed a kiss onto her lips
"Hmmmmm maybe just for you, if I wore this outside of our bedroom the green eyed monster would come out of you" Derek chuckled as he led her to the bed working his way to getting her in just her panties…
Flashback
"Mere" Derek said softly as he sat next to Meredith on the beach towels they had laid out for the afternoon "Don't you want to come and watch"
"No I'm fine" Meredith said sharply, her eyes not leaving her magazine. I'm Fine. The infamous words of Meredith Grey that meant she was anything but fine.
"Mere" Derek said concerned "Come on it'll be fun, you can't really play but you can watch"
"I can see fine from here" Meredith said
"Come on Mere, you're like a quarter mile down the beach from the net…"
"Just go Derek, I'm going inside" she said starting to pack her magazine and stuff away. Her swimsuit cover moved exposing her small baby bump. She was only 3 months along but given her small frame she was already showing.
"Mere I brought you out here so you could relax and have some fun" Derek said shaking his head
"Has is occurred to you that I'm three months pregnant, and I feel sick all the time and I can't do anything" Meredith snapped "And I'm like a whale over here while you're off playing sand volleyball with college cheerleaders throwing themselves at you" she said harshly. Luckily she was wearing sunglasses that masked the tears that were beginning to form in her eyes. She was insecure about her body, her body that was going through changes for their baby growing inside of her. She was fine until their first day at the beach when she realized it was spring break for some schools and there was a competition in town for college cheerleading that meant girls with perfect bodies flooding the beach.
"You don't have to be upset" Derek started
"Derek you are so oblivious to the world, they're practically throwing themselves at you. We've been here two days and we haven't spent anytime together. You've been off playing volleyball all day and doing bonfires at night that girl Bridget who definitely is trying to get into your swim trunks" She said picking up her beach tote
"She's just being nice, we're all just trying to have a nice time" Derek said defensively "And you're too busy being miserable"
"You did this to me" Meredith screamed as she began to walk away from him
"It takes two" Derek yelled back "And I can't help that I'm good looking"
"Would it kill you to put a shirt on" Meredith yelled back "Maybe not flaunt it all for the world to see"
Later that evening Derek was at the bonfire party with Bridget and her friends
"Where's your girl at?" Kyle, on of Bridget's friend asked
"Probably being bitchy" Bridget laughed "You don't need her, you've got us, you've got me" Bridget said interlocking her arms with Derek's getting little to close to him. A few minutes later at the bonfire they were all singing songs around the fire and Bridget sat next to Derek, her head on his bare shoulder. She turned her head and locked eyes with Derek and leaned in.
"I have to go" Derek said getting up promptly leaving Bridget dumbfounded. He made his way towards the hotel room where he took a deep breath before entering. He opened the door slowly, not knowing what to expect. She had walked away furiously and he was a stupid and clueless man. He spotted her frame on the bed, curled up facing away from the door. She appeared to be asleep until he saw her small frame shake slightly… she was crying… his heart sank. Once again he had caused her grief.
"Oh Mer" Derek said quickly making his way to the bed in two strides "I'm so sorry, you were right he said kneeling down on the floor so he could be eye level with her
"I just, I'm sorry. It's stupid and I'm just so insecure and you're just stupid and oblivious" she began as her crying got heavier
"Oh no Mer, It's not stupid. I'm stupid" he said as he made his way into the bed. The doctor had warned both of them about her blood pressure and stress levels and he's sure that the past two days have been elevated and now his girlfriend was on the verge of a panic attack.
"Everything I ever love or I'm happy for always leaves me or gets taken away and she's taking you away… I'm just a fat pregnant girl and she's all... She's just pretty… and then I'll be fat and have a baby and be all alone!" Meredith cried. Derek wrapped his arms around her, the only way he knew to calm her down
"Breathe Meredith, shhhh it's okay, we are okay. You are never going to be alone. Come hell or high water you'll always have me." He whispered into her ear as he ran his fingers through her as he pulled her against his chest. "Shhhhh" He soothed, she buried her face into his chest, her cries slowing down until her breathing finally leveled out.
"Mer" Derek said softly, unsure if she had fallen asleep
"Hmmmm" she said quietly into his just not moving, he felt her hand move towards her small bump
"I'm sorry" He said "You were right. She as after me, but I want you to know one thing. You're the only girl I want, and the only girl I see. You're the only girl I want to kiss good morning and goodnight to and every moment in-between" He said softly, when she didn't say anything he continued "Mere your body is going through a lot of changes, and to me it only makes you more beautiful and more amazing. Your body changing is because you are giving me the most precious thing, our little perfect baby. I'm so sorry I caused you grief and I hope you can forgive me" He said. She hadn't said anything that worried him "I love you" he said softly
"When we go to the beach tomorrow can you wear a shirt" she said softly as she looked up at him
"I'll wear a parka if you want" He smiled at her "In fact tomorrow it's just going to be me, you on a date on the beach a few miles east, where all the old people hang out"
"I'd like that" she said gently
"I love you" Derek said pressing a small kiss to her forehead. She responded by tilting her head and giving him a gently kiss and a smile
End of Flashback
"It's cold in here" Meredith said as she pulled the cover over their naked bodies
"Well I can help you with that" Derek smirked pulling Meredith closer to him, kissing her gently
"You've already gotten lucky many times tonight" Meredith giggled
"I should prance around in my underwear more often" he laughed before kissing her gently again
"I'm sure you'd love if I just walked around in panties all day" Meredith giggled
"Ooh I would prefer commando" Derek laughed
"Dirty man" Meredith giggled
"Hmm" Derek said as he snuggled with her. This was his favorite moment. It wasn't the sex, well that was good too, but after they'd make love they'd cuddle and snuggle and share gentle kisses… that was his favorite part because he was right where he belonged, loving her.
(I got to get home) But, baby, you'd freeze out there
(Say lend me a coat) It's up to your knees out there
(You've really been grand) I thrill when you touch my hand

"There are my snow bunnies" Derek smiled when Meredith and Emma walked back into the hotel suite. Meredith had taken Emma back for another ski lesson while Derek stayed in for the morning to do a conference call he couldn't miss
"Daddy I did the bunny hill" Emma said excitedly "Mr. Sean says I was the bestest and smallest one on the little hill"
"Yes Daddy, she got a certificate and everything" Meredith said pulling out the certificate Emma had earned
"Looks like I have the next Olympic Skier" Derek said as Emma hopped into his lap
"And mommy did the Big mountain and Mr. Sean helped me watch her on the TV" Emma said
"Mommy got to snow board too" Derek said, "Did she fall on her face" he chuckled
"No" Meredith said smirking at him
"My nose is frozen" Emma said rubbing her nose against Derek's
"It might just fall off" Derek laughed
"Em, you ready for a nap… We have to pick up your friends today at the airport. But it's going to be really late so I think you should take a nap after lunch so you can be awake when they get here" Meredith said as went to the small kitchen area to make a quick sandwich

"She'll be out for a least two hours" Meredith said as she closed the door to Emma's room "I think we finally found the one activity that tires our energetic child out"
"hmmmm" Derek said softly as Meredith laid on the couch next to him, using his thigh as a pillow
"It's only been a few hours and I'm already sore" Meredith said pulling her left knee towards her chest to stretch out a little bit "Should have expected it though, I haven't been out on the powder in years
"You know we have we have a private hot tub on our deck" Derek smiled
"I like the way you think Dr. Shepherd" She said as she got up "I'm going to change"
"Meredith, I'll be in the hot tub" Derek as he opened the door to their private patio
"I'll be out in a minute" She called from the bathroom. A few moments later she emerged from the bathroom in the hotel white robe and stepped out of the patio where Derek was already in the tub
"I was beginning to think you fell asleep in the closet" Derek chuckled which stifled quickly when Meredith dropped her robe revealing what had taken so long. In front of him stood a naked Meredith freshly groomed (not that she let her lady parts get too untamed) with her hair put up in a messy bun.
"Meredith" Derek breathed
"Well it's very rare I get a private hot tub with my boyfriend and a mountain view, I thought I'd make the most of it" she smirked as she stepped in
"Right when I think our sex life get's as exciting as it gets, you surprise me" Derek said
"I don't hear you complaining" Meredith giggled
"How long did you say Emma was going to be napping for?" Derek asked as he brought her over him so she straddles him while he placed gentle kisses along her neck and chest
"We probably have a safe hour left, after that it'll get risky, so this is going to be either one round of slow and sensual or…"
"Oh I'll take it slow, enjoy the view, I'm not just talking about the mountains" he winked back at her
