Hi Guys sorry for the long wait over the Christmas Period, as always review and enjoy. Many thanks for you're kind words and support so far!
The first thing Lucy was pleased to see was that her apartment had been put up for sale, during the seven years she'd been gone. She collected her belongings from storage at the Land lady's apartment. Agatha had shockingly worked out a deal with her father before he...
Anyway the Landlady had gladly offered her apartment back for the low price of 70,000 Jewel. 'That won't be necessary' Lucy hummed cheerfully to herself collecting her trunk of books, and satchel.
'But where will you live?' Agatha asked bemused, her half lit cigarette dangled dangerously between long manicured fingers. The smell of acrylic was overwhelming. Lucy fixed a wide smile onto her face, it felt stiff and awkward.
'I'm moving in with a friend' she said honestly, bidding Agatha fair well. Her father had left her many packages in her absence, her arms began to cramp under the weight of them. She passed residents along her journey through town, many people greeted her and told her they were glad she was back. Lucy kept the fixed smile in place. Sorcerer Weekly, had called 4 times to ask if she'd appear in a shoot with Mira Jane. Usually the attention would have thrilled Lucy, but it only seemed to make her mood darker.
As she neared Natsu's cottage, she bumped into Levy. The bluenette had been looking for her. Oddly Gajeel wasn't with her. 'Lucy' she said holding out her arms in a sisterly gesture. 'I just heard about you're father I'm so sorry I-' Lucy neatly side stepped her outstretched hands. Shifting her satchel and and moving her parcels to one hand, she patted Levy once on the shoulder.
'I don't want to talk about it' she said kindly, though her tone left no room for argument. Levy sighed uselessly. Looking at her friend with concern, it was too much for Lucy. She kissed her cheek quickly and said her goodbyes.
Levy watched her friend go frowning to herself, as always Gajeel appeared mysteriously at her side. He had done the right thing leaving Levy to confront her, he assured himself. 'Did she see the grave shrimp?' Levy looked at him sadly.
'You mean her fathers, or her mothers? I heard her friend Haku had them moved here when he found out she'd disappeared and Lucy's father lost the heartfilia estate, he knew how much it'd mean to her'. Gajeel sighed, mentally cursing Lucy's friend.
'I wasn't talking about their graves' he whispered to Levy's shock.
Lucy hesitated at the door to Natsu's cottage. She could hear the sounds of Natsu cooking, which always led to disaster. She'd put the luggage by the front door, arms crossed, wondering how best to broach the subject. What would Natsu do she wondered, head tilited considering. She felt herself grin. Happy and Natsu jumped as Lucy kicked open the front door. Natsu stood looking very masculine in Lucy's frilly apron, he raised a single brow in confusion, one hand was on the frying pan over the stove. Lucy bought the first lot of packages in, her satchel slung over her shoulder.
'Luuucy' Happy crowed in delight, secretly pleased that his blonde haired saviour was about to rescue him from Natsu's cooking.
'I picked up some salmon' Lucy answered his unspoken question knowingly. 'Il cook it when iv unpacked' Happy perched on the table, completely satisfied with the days turn out.
'Oi' Natsu objected at the blonde's sudden intrusion. She always used to complain when he climbed through her window. He turned his back to them muttering under his breath, as Lucy threw her satchel over the chair. And dumped a pile of parcels wrapped in soft brown paper onto the table. Happy eyed them curiously. 'Wait...unpacking what?' He turned to her using his magic to exstinguish the flames, if Lucy was offering to cook anyway he might as well take advantage. Lucy surprised him then by blushing.
'My apartments up for sale' Lucy said as by way of an explanation avoiding Natsu's gaze. His eyes widened in sympathy he knew how much it meant to her. He nodded to happy, once.
'We'll get it back for you' He said seriously, formulating a plan. With his and Happys combined savings they had enough money to put a down payment on the property. Which meant Lucy would feel too indebted to them, meaning they could invade her house when ever they liked. The thought made Natsu gleefully happy, as he imagined long nights soaking in Lucy's bath, eating her food. The apartment was closer to the guild which was always a bonus not to mention it was so clean! And he got to see Lucy, in the mornings, during the nights, beside him...beneath him. Natsu grasped a very firm handle on his thoughts before they took a more perverted route. He cleared his throat turning to leave (quickly) when Lucy held up a hand to stop him. Her deep brown eyes did gaze at him then, round and beautiful framed by long lashes that kissed her skin. Natsu was instantly on the defensive, she wanted something, call it a mans intuition...or survival instinct. He gazed at her through narrowed eyes.
'Iv found alternative arrangements' she shrugged, turning away to organise the packages by date.
'Oh' Natsu said a bit deflated, she could have at least stayed one night, instead of just using they're house as a storage unit.
'Well we'll help you move' he offered, happy shot him an annoyed scowl. The lazy feline wanted to stuff himself on Lucy's home cooked food.
'No need, everything's outside. It won't take long too move it all in, I travel light' Happy caught on first and snickered at Natsu's dumb founded expression.
'Wait!' He thundered spluttering behind her as he followed her path down to the door, Lucy handed him a heavy trunk filled with books. He grunted automatically carrying it inside. Lucy closed the door behind him. 'You can't just move in' Natsu said outraged his body aflame with annoyance.
'Watch the books' Lucy chided him, snatching the green trunk from him like a child and cuddled it protectively. She set it down next to their empty bookcase. Her mind happily mapping and alphabetising which books to put on which shelves.
'Well, have you got anything to say for yourself?' Nasty asked hands on hips, grinding his teeth together, waiting for an explanation. Lucy paused, her eyes widened in embarrassment as if she'd forgotten her place, good Natsu thought grumpily.
'Yes' she said shyly, walking totwards him, Natsu was startled by her closeness. Her blonde hair was tied back it fell over her shoulder, her vanilla scent ensnared him as she stepped closer, despite his better judgement, Natsu inhaled sharply. She caught his lips by surprise, he groaned instinctively catching her face, one hand latching into her hair as he closed the distance between them. Lucy's hands snaked across his broad shoulders, undoing the apron ties, it fell to the floor discarded.
'Lucy' Natsu groaned breaking for air, resting his forehead against hers. 'That was a-'
'A thank you' she supplied helpfully, trying to contain the fits of laughter, at Natsu's dazed expression as he remembered his argument. Happy had generously covered his eyes grumbling to himself.
'You're a dangerous ally' he said seriously. Lucy walked over and scratched his chin, despite his earlier disgust happy turned to jelly. Stretching and rubbing his soft blue fur against her hand. She ran her fingers down his spine as happy arched very catlike his eyes rolling back into his head in bliss. 'There's more fish where the salmon came from'. She stage whispered and, there she had him. She had won him over without further protest.
'I love you' he said sighing happily, as she picked up her suitcase and retreated up the stairs.
'That's it, you give in because she's supplying you with food?' Happy grinned mischievously, his black eyes glinting with wickedness.
'Yeah so, what's she supplying you with?' The tips of Natsu's ears were still red as he took the stairs two at a time. he reached the second floor, just in time to see Lucy, discard her top and jeans. Left only in her underwear, any tirade died in Natsu's throat. He gazed at her like a drunk squinting in daylight. She opened his draws sighing happily, and selected a long black t-shirt of Natsu's before shrugging it on and climbing into the double bed pulling the sheets over her head.
Lucy heard the bed springs groan next to her as Natsu came to sit beside her. 'Lucy' Natsu sighed, peeling back the covers to reveal a sheepish looking Lucy. She caught them and twisted the sheets in her anxiety. 'What is this about?' He asked curiously his onyx eyes assed her. His pink hair ruffled from running his hands through it. (a gesture he did whenever he was confused) 'What are you doing in my bed?'
'I'm tired' she offered unhelpfully. 'And it's our bed' she said stubbornly, snuggling further into the pillows. 'We bought it together, when I still lived here'. Natsu understood the meaning in her gaze and refused to be distracted, despite the flash of heat he felt in his gut.
'Lucy' he said loosing patience. Lucy turned over so he couldn't see her face, she tried to keep her breathing deep and even as she replied.
'I don't want to be alone anymore. I don't care if we spent seven years in suspended sleep, we've been dancing around each other for too long'.
Natsu had known her long enough to know when something was wrong, she'd tell him eventually. He sighed wrapping his body around hers, his chin resting between the hollow of her neck. He rubbed her arms in soothing circles. She didn't cry, there were no tears to shed for the father she never knew. Instead her thoughts returned to Haku, and what he must have gone through thinking she was dead. With no way of contacting him, she couldn't tell him otherwise. She remembered the events of the Island in flashes, Natsu had finally come face to face with Zeref and survived. The thought still sent shivers down her spine. She'd lost one Nakama she wouldn't loose another.
Later that evening Natsu awoke to an insistent knocking at the door. Lucy was fast asleep in the crook of his arms. He shifted her gently, and pulled the blankets around her. She frowned, her hand searching for his. 'Happy' he whispered.
'Aye' came a sleepy reply as the little blue exceed flew up the stairs, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
'Stay with Lucy, I won't be long' Happy nodded too tired to comment. And landed beside Lucy, who promptly cuddled him to her chest. Within minutes they were both snoring soundly. Natsu half smiled at his little family, before the knocking interrupted his thoughts.
He opened the door with a scowl, that only deepened when he saw the visitor. Gajeel stood there with an impatient expression. His shadow cast a frightening figure under the dull light of the streets. 'Grab you're coat' he jerked his head towards the road and turned, hands in pockets expecting Natsu to follow. Natsu grumbled, but slid on his shoes and sweater.
'Is this about Lucy?' Natsu asked when they reached a little cemetery near the cathedral, his footsteps slowed unsure that he wanted to go further. Gajeel nodded, his expression seemed worried, out of place, rather than his usual superior smirk.
'Yeah' he shifted uncomfortably. 'I figured she hadn't told you' he said no more, selecting a small cobbled path that led them to a row of neat little stone coloured graves, near a fountain in the cathedrals courtyard. They were simple smooth grey granite, each with an inscription. (Read as is written)
Layla Heartfilia
'Beloved Mother and Wife'
Jude Heartfilia
Beloved Husband
Natsu made a strangled noise in the back of his throat. He crouched before Jude's grave running his finger over the smooth surface. White lilies hand been planted over each of their graves.
'Lucy's friend, Haku, had them moved here when he found out she was gone, he figured that's what she'd want. He'd been in contact with Wakaba after we left for Tenrou' Natsu nodded, unable to speak. Memories of his own fathers loss, fresh in his mind. That was why. He stood, his body tense about to turn back to Lucy. He couldn't leave her now he knew.
'Wait' Gajeel placed a hand firmly on his shoulder. Natsu growled, at the intrusion.
'There's more' and with the same hand he pointed to the smallest Grave it read:
Memoriae Sacrum Lucy Heartfilia
Beloved Daughter, Beloved Friend and Mage. 'Morior Invictus'
Amor animi arbitrio sumitur, non ponitur Lucy. In aeternum te amabo et unum diem Haku.
'My Latins rusty but I think it reads-' Gajeel said awkwardly, as Natsu sat there and silently seethed.
' I know what it means, I remember igneel teaching me' Natsu said slowly, his voice a dangerous whisper. His jaw was clenched and his onyx eyes traced the words in elegant script.
'In sacred memory of Lucy heartfilia' he whispered the words as if speaking over her grave. 'I remain unvanquished'
'I think that's how he wanted her to be remembered' Gajeel tried to add unhelpfully.
'We choose to love but we don't choose to cease loving, Lucy. Il love you forever and a day- Haku' Natsu growled low in his throat, jealousy for his foster brother burned like acid in his gut. And for one shocking, heart stopping moment, Natsu was glad that Haku believed her dead.
'He wanted her to be remembered as his, as Anna, that's why it's in Latin and thats why Lucy was upset' his eyes glowed with understanding. Gajeel frowned considering the wiseness of bringing Natsu here.
'Oi Salamander, don't do anything rash' Gajeel said nervously eyeing Natsu with weariness, as he raised a flaming fist over the grave, his face monstrous In the light cast by the flickering embers.
'This is what's causing Lucy pain. He doesn't get to do that, not when he gave up on her so easily'.
'She's our Lucy, Lucy of fairytail' Gajeel summarised with a nod. Natsu brought his flaming fist down, with the driving force of a freight train, the stone beneath his blow splintered.
Lucy yawned when she felt a viscous tug on her ankle the next morning. 'Natsu get off!' she growled aiming a swift kick to his midsection, snuggling a snoring happy closer to her chest.
'Lucy, you good for nothing pain in the ass' Levy muttered, releasing her hold. 'Gajeel and Natsu, were taken into a magic council holding cell last night for destroying town property. Makarov's gone to try and release them'. Lucy opened a chocolate eye wearily, still half asleep.
'Gajeel took Natsu to a magic ball?' She half sat up confused, waking happy, her hair stuck up in blonde tufts.
'Aye' happy yawned, his wings appearing. 'He asked me to keep an eye on you last night, he said he had to go out' Lucy smirked ruffling his fur.
'Well you sure did a good job at that' she teased, poking his cheek. Happy gave her a haughty stare.
'But why did Gajeel take Natsu to a ball? Natsu can't even dance' Lucy said thickly with sleep, rubbing her eyes and groaning. Her eyes felt heavy and swollen from crying the previous night.
Levy stared at them both exasperated. 'Get up you idiots' she growled, hands planted firmly on hips. 'Il explain on the way to the guild'.
'Nope, going back to bed. Come join us levy, there's plenty of room' Lucy sighed, turning over and pulling the covers over her head.
'You'll thank me later' Levy muttered under her breath she concentrated summoning her power. 'Solid script make: wind'. It started of as a gentle breeze, just enough to stir the sheets and cause a chill on the back of Lucy's neck. She burrowed deeper under the covers. Next the papers on the writing desk took flight, soaring higher caught in the current. Then the bed started to move as the wind gained power. The sheets encasing Lucy lifted, and spun in mid air caught in the mini tornado, twisting themselves into complicated patterns. Goosebumps rose alone Lucy's skin, and Happys wings materialised acting as a buffer against the breeze. The windows flew open, and a few books from Lucy's belongings were tossed out the window. The bed began to shake, levy stood their eyes closed in concentration. Her blue hair swirling in gentle tendrils around her face, protected in a tight air pocket, from the harassing storm around her.
Happy took flight, flying of course into a nearby shelf, Lucy leaped from the bed, her arms held out in front of her protecting her face from the icy sting of it. She used her dragon slayer strength and planted her feet into the smooth wood. Staggering towards Levy, when she reached her Lucy swept her leg towards Levy, right foot extended hooking around the blue mages ankle and pulled. With a gasp of surprise, the script Mage landed on her back. She grinned up at a thunderous Lucy, and shrugged. Lucy's hair stood up in windy tufts, with her dragon like pupils (caused from the force of strength she used to reach Levy) she looked rather frightening. She loomed over her blue haired comrade, hand extended. Levy took it and stood.
'I've been practicing' she shrugged proudly, Lucy just rolled her eyes.
'Wait did you say Natsu was being held by the council?' Lucy's voice rose sharply, her foggy brain deciphering Levy's previous words.
'and Gajeel, that's why we have to go the guild we haven't got much time' Levy grabbed a black sweater and white skirt from the opened trunk of Lucy's things. She shoved them into Lucy's outstretched arms with a pair of knee high soft leather brown boots. 'These will do' she chastened, her anxiety making the words an order.
Lucy grumbled but obliged, disappearing into the adjoining bathroom. 'To be honest I'm surprised they hadn't captured Gajeel sooner' Lucy remarked amused. Levy ignored her Jab as she was changing. Picking her way across the room of debris (upturned books, pictures, shelves. Natsu was going to kill her). Till she found happy, dazed on the floor. His wings were pinned down by a heavy book. She freed him, lifting him gently. Happy blinked slowly, coming to his senses.
'If Natsu and Gajeel, have been detained why head to the guild? Why not meet Makarov at the council holding cell?' Happy asked brushing aside her apologetic tending, and rising into the air flexing his wings for good measure.
'Because the wards around the basement are down. Makarov, had to amend them to enter, since Wakaba was named Guild Master. Neither could enter, until the matter was cleared up. As when Wakaba succeeded him, Freeds runes werent amended, but they won't accept anyone other than the current master. Makarov and freed were in the process of disabling them, when Makarov got the call about Natsu and Gajeel. We don't have much time to investigate, and we need to sneak past Freed, he'll be keeping a careful eye on the place, until Makarov returns'.
'Aye' Happy agreed strangely somber, his dark eyes, assessed Levy's frantic appearance. 'But it could be dangerous without Natsu'.
'That's why you have me' Lucy answered striding out of the bathroom, hand securing her whip to her belt, the celestial keys were also firmly attached. Her blonde hair was tied back in a no nonsense ponytail, and her dark brown eyes assessed the duo shrewdly, they jumped apart in guilt. 'Now what are you looking for?' She tilted her head back dangerously, glaring at Levy who gulped.
'Er...a weapon, Wakaba told the master Haku had been searching for it when they reached Magnolia, something called Fairy Heart. Natsu noticed the Master disappearing to the basement every Saturday on you're training day. He had some of us, ...observe him. After he discovered Makarov made you keep you're past secret he didn't entirely trust him' Lucy processed this, like a lump of coal. The hot embers kindling and settling into her stomach like a roaring furnace, she felt hot and angry.
'He didn't trust me enough to tell me' Lucy summarised grounding her boot into the smooth wooden floor. The floor began to smoulder beneath her.
'Er Lucy...the house is made mostly of wood. Unless you want to start looking for a house for all three of us I suggest...' happy began in alarm. Lucy breathed deeply and extinguished the flames, leaving charred ash in the spot where she stood.
'Sorry. Happy, Levy, lets go. Il deal with the idiot later' she added under her breath, her tone enough to make fiercest Mage shiver.
They made their way quickly through the streets jogging towards the guild. Lucy was mostly silent, stewing. Happy and Levy kept shooting each other silent looks, each urging the other to make conversation, but neither of them daring. When they reached the guild doors, Lucy stopped gathering her strength, she leaned on her knees breathing heavily. Happy dropped Levy on the ground beside Lucy. She had used her dragon strength to propel herself at a faster speed, leaving Levy unable to keep pace.
'What...did...they get...in trouble for' Lucy panted, wiping her sweaty brow, curiosity getting the better of her. Levy shifted uncomfortably.
'They...vandalised a grave at Magnolia cemetery.'
'What?!' Lucy screeched turning on the bluenette. 'Not my fathers!-no' Lucy's chocolate eyes widened and then she realised, of course it wasn't her fathers grave it was hers. Natsu would have been furious, she felt a rush of affection she didn't want to feel.
She stood there eyes threatening to water, hands clenched, lip pouting stubbornly. 'Lucy?' Happy asked in alarm, landing on her shoulder. Lucy wiped her eyes with the back of her fist.
'It's nothing' she assured them clearing her throat, Levy smiled knowingly. 'We need a distraction. Something that will allow us to sneak into the basement unnoticed, and get Freed out of the way'
Lucy tapped her foot thoughtfully an idea forming.
'You don't have that bunny costume handy do you..?' Levy quipped cheekily. Lucy snorted, selecting Gemini's key from her belt, her eyes shone with the promise of mischief, 'no but il need you're help.'
Freed was perched near the bar, he was half listening to Evergreen drone on about Elfman. Mira Jane refilled his ale with a knowing wink. '5 more minutes, and you can fake crippling stomach pains, il smuggle you out' Mira whispered. Freed's eyes shone with gratitude but he sighed heavily.
'I can't leave the guild, Masters orders' Mira Jane cocked her head to the side in curiosity but didn't pursue it. Not 5 minutes passed when Laxus walked through the doors, Freed perked up instantly. The lightening Mage walked into the guild a little stiffly, his eyes scanned the room until they landed on Freed. He sat down on a bar stool beside him, first crossing his legs then shifting, trying to adjust to a more casual pose, slinging an arm around the edge of the bar where freed was resting. The rune Mage nearly wept with joy.
'I have a mission, it requires two people. Freed I want you with me on this' Laxus demanded in a gruff voice. Freeds eyes sparkled with euphoria, he had dreamed of this moment. He and Laxus his idol, fighting crime side by side. Laxus snapped his fingers raising an eyebrow in question.
'Are you still with us?' He asked impatiently, wrapping his knuckles lightly against Freeds temple, who blushed delicately.
'Laxus, Freeds always away with the fairies' Evergreen simpered, patting Laxuses shoulder in sympathy. 'Obviously, it's my services you require for the mission' Evergreen adjusted her red glasses and flicked her glossy brown locks over her shoulder. Gemini glanced at Ever nervously, scanning Laxuses memory banks.
'Ahhh Evergreen' Gemini sighed in relief, Freed snapped out of his daydreaming, horrified that he had blown his chance. Laxus assessed Evergreen once, with his eyes. She batted her lashes demurely shifting in her seat and leaning forward, knowing that in this current position her cleavage was displayed to its best advantage. 'You talk too much' Gemini shrugged indifferently, turning his back on her and engaging Freed in conversation. Evergreens mouth flopped open unattractively for a moment, and made a few spluttering noises. The green haired rune Mage however looked as if all his christmases had come at once.
'I love you' Freed whispered reverently.
'What' Gemini asked amused, any chance to cause chaos delighted them. The Laxus copy leaned into Freed, his rough hand cupping Freeds face, his thumb stroked his chin suggestively 'did you say?' He murmured, one eyebrow raised in question. Freed had turned the colour of cranberries, and all Gemini managed to elicit from him was a short 'eep' noise.
Just then , Gemini felt a tap on his shoulder. Elfman stood there, shifting his feet nervously. Evergreen stood behind him, arms folded, a superior smile decorated her lips. 'Er...I..er heard you upset Ever, id like you to apologies...it wasn't very manly' Elfman laughed nervously scratching his wild mane of white hair. He easily towered over Laxus, who was considered one of the most intimidating figures in the guild. Yet the mere threat of Laxus's power hung in the air as a current reminder that he was not a Mage to be reckoned with. Gemini from searching the recesses of Laxuses mind, knew he was aware of it. Often wielding it to his advantage. Gemini stood stretching, his head tilted menacingly to the side.
'Are you going to fight me Elfman?' The Laxus carbon copy advanced, Elfman faltered a little before steeling himself, he nodded cracking his knuckles, though he did shoot Ever a nervous glance for confirmation. She glared at him, her green eyes safely hidden behind specs, glittered in warning. Elfman wisely decided he'd rather face Laxus.
'It's the manly thing to do' he nodded in confirmation. Gemini who had the ability to replicate powers hesitated, deciding it better to let Elfman punch him, Lucy wanted a distraction not guild mates hurt. So The celestial spirit steeled itself, eyes squeezed shut, stiffening himself in preparation for the oncoming blow. What he didn't see was a graceful figure leaping between them. Elfmans fist had transformed, it was covered in a thick grey rubber hide, and had shaped talons for nails. As he was an inch from striking, his blow was deflected by a purple sheild, transparent, and covered in runed writing, a foot long in width and diameter, and wielded by none other than Freed. He stood lithe and tall, straightening his jacket and adjusting the grip on his shield. His long green hair whipped around his face, his long angular cheekbones were drawn in disapproval.
'I will defend our masters honour' Freed vowed, all his focus directed at a shocked Ever and Elfman.
'Duh...err' Gemini mumbled completely shocked, and a little touched that Laxuses comrades defended him so readily. 'That really isn't necessary' the spirit waved Laxuses hands in a gesture of peace, which went unnoticed.
'You think this is you're moment to shine? To protect Laxus? Il prove to him whose worthy to stand by his side'. Evergreen whipped of her glasses then, her green eyes shining.
'Ever, No!' Elfman lunged for her, his eyes widening in horror. 'That's a magical deflection Shield it'll rebound...' but it was too late. Ever's stone magic rebounded of his shield, freezing everyone closest to them, not excluding a surprised Gemini.
'Laxus!' Freed said horror struck turning to face a shell shocked Evergreen. Her mouth moved silently, excuses dying on her lips.
'He's going to kill me!' Evergreen wailed, clutching uselessly onto her frozen boyfriend.
'Not if I get you first' Freed vowed, lunging at evergreen his eyes flashing with determination. They rolled around the guild tugging each other's hair and kicking viscously, dragging other people into the brawl, until once again the entire guild was involved in another fairytail fight. Outside the guild doors, Levy and Lucy chuckled to themselves. Happy had flown of to find Gray.
'Makarovs going to kill us' Levy said wiping her eyes with mirth. Lucy winked, leaning casually against the guild doors, arms folded like a body guard.
'That's if he finds out it was us' she murmured as Laxus approached, crap Lucy thought. Well, this is why they posted themselves as look outs, she reminded herself, thanking the stars she'd sent happy to fetch Gray.
'What do we do?!' Levy hissed as Laxus approached, arms folded...face impassive.
'We just have to bide our time until Gray gets here' Lucy said sighing and stepping into laxuses path. Levy shot Lucy a suspicious look.
'No offence to Gray-Sama, he's definitely powerful, but I don't think even he's a match for Laxus' she muttered bravely standing beside her friend.
'It's not Gray I want, it's whose following him' Lucy replied cryptically. Laxus stopped in front of them, rolling his eyes, he muttered under his breath, shifting to the side to move around them, when Lucy stepped into his path again he stopped. The sunlight caught in his fine strands of golden hair, he smirked coldly, Laxus's handsome chiseled face twisted into a sneer.
'Stand aside midget' Lucy clenched her fists trying to control her temper. She knew Laxus was more powerful than she, maybe even more powerful than Haku. With his help they had defeated the second guild master on Tenrou. Still she reasoned, it was no time to be cowardly now.
'I can't do that' she said firmly, both blonde mages glared at one another, Lucy had to crane her head back to see him properly.
'Why, indulge me' Laxus drawled, adopting his usual bored demeanour.
'Because...' Lucy looked quickly at Levy nervously, who stood their looking as equally dumbstruck. 'Because...I want to challenge you to a battle'
'What?!' Levy and Laxus gasped in never to be repeated unison. Lucy shifted in nervousness on the dirt path, a little offended that they were both so surprised.
'Er...you heard me' Lucy said with more confidence than she felt. She unhooked her keys from her belt, twirling them around her fingers, 'or are you afraid of being beaten by a celestial wizard?' Laxuses eyes narrowed, and he grinned a slow sadistic smile, that sparked the wildness in his eyes. Lucy reeled back at his eagerness.
'She means two wizards' Levy said stepping quickly to Lucy's side. Her brown eyes, flashed with an inner steel. She squeezed Lucy's hand tightly preventing her from arguing. Lucy bit her tongue hard, although greatfull she hadn't wanted to bring Levy into this. 'It's only fair, what with you being an S-class Mage' Laxus took the bait. He laughed long and loudly.
'This should be fun, alright little lambs. You could invite as many of you're friends as you want, it won't make a difference' Laxus bowled a little mockingly, and turned to leave without checking to see if they were following. He led them to the little courtyard beside the guild, which suited Lucy's purposes fine, as it was by the back doors to the guild. The door led into the bar area and near to it was a staircase leading to the basement, allowing them easy access to sneak in.
'I can feel the runes from here, they're so weak' Levy whispered as they took their positions. It was a quiet, cold, clear day, meaning the courtyard was empty. The guilds occupants seeking the warmth of an ale and a fire. Laxus stood a little distance from them, his arms folded...waiting. Despite his casual manner, his black eyes assessed them keenly, looking for weakness.
'Ok, we only have to hold him off for a little while, you didn't have to do this you know' Lucy said stretching out her muscles cautiously, pulling her arm across her chest with the other arm to limber up the deltoid muscle. Levy looked at her fondly, after all this time she was still skittish with her emotions around people that weren't Natsu or Happy.
'You don't need to fall over yourself thanking me' she jibed, preparing to summon her magic. 'I love you too' Lucy smirked but didn't tease her, which was as good a confession as any.
'Right you need to be careful, you're magic is more offensive, so il concentrate on defending us with rune barriers, I can also provide a few...upgrades, but they won't last for long'. Lucy nodded great full.
She was kicking herself for not wearing trousers, at least she'd had the hindsight to tie her long blonde bangs back from her face. Her brown eyes met Laxuses, he stood about 10 yards away from them curling his hand towards Lucy. He wanted the fight to come to him. Lucy's training kicked in, it may have been seven years, but her senses hadn't dulled. Find his weakness. Lucy knew he was overconfident and bored easily. By waiting for them to approach, she guessed he would launch a full scale attack and end it quickly.
'Levy can you do anything about my...?' Lucy gestured to her shoes, but Levy was already there, using her solid script magic to transform the material of her shoes to rubber to act as insulator to dispurse Laxuses lightening.
'Clever' Laxus whispered too low for the girls to hear. He summarised quickly, they weren't the strongest opponents, but what mages like Natsu had in raw power Mages like Levy and Lucy made up for with cunning. It would be a short battle he thought smugly, but it was nice to experience a different type of opponent.
'Just one last thing, I know you're tempted but don't use you're dragon powers, it could seriously weaken you, this should suffice'. She wrote the word 'wings' on Lucy's back between her shoulder blades, and sure enough from her back materialised green transparent wings like a sparrows, covered in green runed writing. They weren't as fancy as Freeds, but they were fast. Last Levy placed a runed barrier around herself, to protect her from Laxuses lightening.
'Let do this' Lucy grinned a feral smile, so much like Natsu's the Levy couldn't help but laugh.
'Script make wind' Levy said repeating her earlier spell. Behind the thick green barrier Laxus and Lucy's images swam as if under water. Her own magic was more defensive, unlike Freeds who preferred to lay traps. She only hoped Lucy could handle the rest.
The wind came fast and sharp, and Lucy rose into the air, revelling at the lightness of her wings, they weren't as powerful as her dragon hide ones but they were light. She navigated the courtyard easily swooping high as Levys wind helped her gain speed. Despite the fear at Laxuses power she was pleased to note she was correct in her earlier assumption. The sky darkened, she heard the low rumble of thunder before she saw the lightning, the hairs on the back of her neck rose. She could feel the static in the air, dancing along her skin. The first bolt missed her by inches, using her Dragons sight and reflexes she managed to turn sharply to the left narrowly avoiding it. She changed tactics and dropped 10 feet, fainting to the right in a half hearted lunge towards Laxus. He aimed two lightening bolts at her this time, one from the right nearly piercing her right wing, the other grazing her earlobe. Lucy hissed brushing it quickly with her fingers, it came away red, Laxus had just nipped her. So she was correct again, Laxus could fire multiple attacks without breaking concentration.
It was time to use her new training.
'Star dress Sagittarius' Lucy's body was bathed in a golden light. Laxus shielded his eyes against the glare to find that Lucy's outfit had changed to a soft green dress and thigh boots. She was hovering over him like an avenging angel an arrow was notched into a long bow. She aimed at Laxus, and he smirked, what good would one silly little arrow do. Then she released, and it was a like shock wave, the arrows multiplied, a sea of them burning bright as stars falling towards earth, and straight for Laxus. He swore, feeling the first stirrings of panic, unleashing a tidal wave of lightening it took out most of them, but the huge power surge had drained him. Lucy wasn't so lucky, she climbed higher, to avoid the wave of power, but it caught her, she was paralysed in mid air, the vaults of lightening coursing over body. Her body began to seize, tremors ran up her arms and legs as her muscles went into spasm. She could detect the faint burning of her rubber soles. Levys script wings faltered, before flickering out of life, Lucy felt herself plummeting to the ground. She selected another key from her belt, 'Scorpio' she yelled as the wind rushed beneath her, her stomach gave a funny turn. Amazing as a dragon she'd never been afraid of heights.
Laxus, stood panting, the arrows had pierced his clothing and hair, one even narrowly grazed his face, drawing a thin cut across his right cheekbone. It was only superficial, Lucy wasn't fighting to kill but it still stunned him, even Natsu hadn't gotten so close. 'Well you are a surprise blondie' he laughed. Dusting himself off. His smile faded, and this time he stopped playing. A sand storm rolled in from the west blurring his vision of Lucy and the guild. 'What the hell?!' Laxus spluttered, looking around. His exits were cut of on both sides, caught in a vortex of sand.
Laxus saw a silhouette appear through the shifting dust, her hair was tied up in twin buns, a cow print bikini top with brown low hung leather trousers completed the outfit. A whip was coiled in her wright hand. She looked at him with determined brown eyes, and drew her right hand back, Laxus knew what was coming next. He was surprised that Lucy could requip so quickly, he'd heard rumours that Erza had been training her, although he thought it was near impossible for a Mage with a holder type magic, to use another type.
He jumped back, expecting Lucy to strike his face or chest. Instead she brought her whip down, hard on the earth, causing the ground beneath them to rupture. Laxus lost his footing and tumbled to the ground, Lucy raised her whip again, possessing inhuman strength and speed. Laxus managed to roll over in time missing the second lash. With each strike, the earth shook like a tremor, unable to stand Laxus switched to an offensive tactic. A ball of golden lightening formed between his hands, it pulsed with fury. He raised his hand and launched it at Lucy, who dispersed it with a crack of her whip.
'You know I can take you out with one hit' Laxus shouted, his chest heaving with exertion as he lay propped up on his elbows before Lucy.
She nodded once several bangs escaping her long blonde ponytail, her eyes held the same fire as Erza's, all her doubts gone, lost to the blood lust of battle. 'That's why I'm not giving you an opportunity to hit me' she whispered her lips hovering on the ghost of a smile. Laxus launched another energy ball at Lucy, while she was distracted, he lunged forcing himself to his feet and tackled Lucy wrapping his hands around her midsection. She cursed in surprise and they rolled around in the dirt, Lucy struggling as Laxus set his body alight with electricity, causing little jolts of static to sting Lucy's skin wherever their bare skin touched.
'Let go of me' Lucy hissed punching him in the jaw. Laxus wrapped his arms around Lucy's struggling torso and increased the voltage, Lucy howled with fury, her brown eyes changing...dilating before becoming slitted like a cats...or a dragons.
'Not until you tell me what's going on' Lucy aimed a well placed knee to his crotch but Laxus blocked her. 'As much as it pains me to admit it you're not even using full force' he nodded to Lucy's outfit. He'd realised that Lucy's Taurus star dress gave her increased strength and speed.
'Well you're not as stupid as you look' Lucy said laughing in pain as tremors racked her muscles, they were medium volts at best. Laxus rolled Lucy over, pinning her beneath him.
'You chose today to challenge me why...? Why wouldn't you let me in the guild?'
'Because I felt like it' she huffed, her body beginning to glow in golden light, she was requiping again.
'I don't think so' Laxus muttered, slamming her shoulders hard into the ground. Lucy was too stunned to change. She glared up at him, Laxus saw a desperation in the brown depths of her eyes. 'Fine, I didn't want to do this but you'll tell me one way or another' he murmured his jaw setting, like he was braced for a difficult task. His body began to hum with energy, golden sparks of light flitted across his skin, before fading into nothing. His hands on Lucy's shoulders became restraints. Lucy hissed as the golden sparks bathed her body, stinging and biting the flesh. She cried out, breaking her connection with her celestial spirit. Scorpio reached for his master in desperation before his gate closed in a halo of light. Once the storm had cleared Levy saw Lucy pinned beneath Laxus. She swore lowering her shield.
'Solid script magic, Sword' she whispered drawing a copper blade from the thin air, it was finely tapered to a needle point and fit snugly in Levy's delicate hand, she was about to charge towards Laxus, when several shards of ice flew past her. The icy sting of it brushed against her skin and she shuddered, as they collided with Laxus like spears. He broke apart from Lucy in surprise, rolling of her. Lucy jumped shakily to her feet. An ice barrier grew between them, at least a foot in height and easily as tall as a man. Lucy touched it in wonder and laughed, her breath visible in the sudden freezing weather.
'Gray..'. She laughed turning, and there he was beside her hunched over leaning his hands on both legs, panting. Levy and Happy were beside him, they're faces showing varying degrees of concern.
'You're mad, Heartfilia' Levy cursed, pulling her into a one armed hug. Lucy laughed but didn't move, her legs were still shaking.
Their reunion was cut short however by Laxus. The wall obliterated under the power of his lightening. Thousands of tiny ice shards flew in every direction. Through the gaping crater, Laxus stood panting. His eyes swivelled to find Lucy and he glared. 'Blondie, were not finished'. He advanced towards her, his patience withered. Gray stepped in front of Lucy protectively shielding her.
'You picked a fight with Laxus?!' Gray hissed furiously, and Lucy bit back a string of excuses nodding once. 'I wondered when Happy said you were in trouble. You'll explain this later' Gray barked discarding his shirt, relaxing into a fighting stance. Laxus smirked and before Gray could react, aimed a bolt of lightening, it hit Gray square in the chest and he toppled over in a cry of alarm.
'Gray!' Lucy cried, dropping to the ground, she covered Gray's body, crouching protectively in front of him...waiting. Levy stepped towards Laxus sword drawn. 'Happy take levy to the guild' Lucy ordered, her eyes never leaving Laxus.
'Aye' Happy agreed all to eager to escape the battle, he snatched a surprised Levy high into the air. She gasped and dropped her sword. Cursing as Happy swept her away from the battle. Laxus stood a foot from the couple, lightening flowed from both hands, the brightness of it made Lucy squint.
'Last time Heartfilia, why don't you want me entering the guild?' Laxus asked, a warning in his voice. Lucy shook her head solemnly. Behind her Gray groaned struggling into a sitting position.
'I can't tell you I'm sorry' Lucy said, her voice came out strong bellying her anxiety. Laxus nodded, and raised his hands the lightening between his palms grew, it was like a blinding inferno, Lucy shielded her eyes against the glare. Laxus aimed the bolt, with only the barest hint of regret.
'It was a good fight' he acknowledged before releasing his power...just as Lucy predicted. Laxuses power met a new barrier surrounding the group, one he couldn't break. A barrier at least 10 feet high and made entirely of water surrounded Laxus in a loose circle. Laxuses lightening only electrified the water, rebounding and hitting him square in the chest. He groaned, collapsing, the lightening had scorched a whole through his clothes, Laxuses hair stood in wiry spikes. The barrier dissolved and Juvia walked towards him, orbs of water swarmed around her hands, as she approached him, the sky darkened and it began to rain. Thick heavy droplets, that drenched Laxus. He stared at Juvia wearily. She was murderous, her Steel blue eyes fixed unnervingly upon him.
'You will not lay another hand on Gray-Sama, Juvia forbids it' Juvia said in a deathly quiet voice. Lucy helped a shocked Gray to his feet and patted him gently on the shoulder, once she knew he was ok.
'Sorry you were bait, it was Juvia I needed. I knew wherever you were, Juvia was bound to follow'. Grays mouth opened and closed like a fish. 'Juvia's water magic is a good conductor for electricity. If Laxus launches an attack it would simply rebound back onto him' Lucy scratched her chin sheepishly. 'Il explain the rest once we're in the guild, Makarov's barriers are down, I need to Juvia to hold Laxus till then. Gemini's posing as Laxus to keep freed distracted'. Lucy explained in a rush, She held up a hand stopping Grays tirade of questions. 'Il explain once we're inside, Juvia can you hold Laxus until then?' Lucy asked directing her question at the water Mage.
Juvia nodded. 'Water lock' she murmured, Laxus cried out in alarm. Water poured like a geyser from Juvias hands, surrounding and incasing him a bubble. Laxus cursed and hammered against the walls but it did him no good and he was too weary to use his power again. Juvias jaw clenched as she maintained the water tight prison.
'Go quickly, Juvia will do this if it helps Gray-sama...but we will be having words later Lucy, Juvia does not like her beloved be using as bait'
'I'm not you're-' Lucy yanked Grays arm pulling him towards the back entrance of the guild.
'Thank you Juvia!' Lucy crowed with relief cutting of Gray's response. There was no need to insult her further.
They entered the guild in surprise. The door to the basement was ajar, Levy had used her magic to break the last of Freeds runes and slipped inside. Lucy expected to have to sneak past at least Mira but to her horror she realised the entire guild was frozen. 'What the...?' Gray said in surprise, his voice echoing around the guild. Lucy shushed him sharply, and tugged his arm till they were crouched behind a guild table. In the centre of the guild hall stood Mira Jane and Erza. Mira was in full Satan Soul amour, she held freed up with a taloned hand. Erza was lecturing a miserable Evergreen who pouted, leaning casually against a frozen Droy. They passed quietly unnoticed, Lucy pulled the heavy door open, it groaned quietly on its hinges. Erza' eyes narrowed as she caught they're retreating figures, but she wisely decided not to draw attention to them.
The basement descended a lot further than either Gray or Lucy expected. It's curved winding case engulfed in darkness the deeper they went. 'Take my hand' Lucy whispered, Gray did so blushing slightly. Moments later Lucy's free hand was alight with flame, it lit up their pathway, although Lucy couldn't shake the uneasily feeling that the darkness was suffocating them. Gray squeezed her hand once in response to her anxiety, and she was grateful for his presence.
They reached another set of heavy wooden doors, they were easily as tall as the trees in magnolia forest. Lucy could hear Levy and Happy talking in hushed whispers. She placed her hand on the wood and felt no resistance, pushing it open, a strong pale light greeted them. Levy had used her solid script magic and balls of twinkling light were flickering over the room casting them in a ghostly glow. In the centre of the room lay a figure encased in solid Lacrima, devoid of clothing her long blonde hair hid her modestly, she appeared to be in a state of deep sleep rather than death. She was placed upon a pedestal, strange runes were inscribed into her Lacrima coffin, although she did not understand them, they spoke to Lucy off opening and summoning. Levy was brushing her fingers over the inscription muttering to herself.
'Is that the first master?' Gray gasped approaching the coffin in wonder. He lightly touched its smooth glass surface.
'Yes and had you been anyone other than a member of fairytail, those runes would have killed you' Levy shot him a reprimanding look and Gray pulled his hand away sheepishly.
'What is it Levy' Lucy asked curiously waking to the girls side, Levy was shaking her head in confusion, walking around the pedestal, a book in her hand. Lucy smiled, Levy was the only person she knew who had a book handy at all times. Her blue wild locks were tied back and she had on her magic reading glasses, she flicked through the books pages at an alarming speed.
'They're not in here' She looked at Lucy shocked, Lucy tilted her head in question. 'This is a book of runes dating back fifty years...' Levy explained pointing to its faded blue cover, and then the inscription on the coffin. 'But this magic and these inscriptions, I think they're forbidden magic...I think they're to protect the first Master...Lucy she is the weapon'
'Fairy heart' Happy whispered landing on Grays shoulder. 'Natsu will want to know about this' He said glancing at Lucy anxiously. Lucy nodded, still staring at the runes they were calling to her, her hand reached out brushing the inscription.
'Of course Happy go, we'll explain everything properly when he gets back'. Happy needed no further instruction and took flight for magnolia guild hall.
'We should copy the inscriptions and leave' Levy instructed pulling out a quill tucked behind her ear, and opening her book.
'But this might be our only opportunity' Gray cautioned, his hands were fisted in his pockets. He gazed longingly around the room as if committing everything to memory. Lucy nodded in agreement.
'It's forbidden celestial magic' she said gasping, Levy looked at her sharply. Lucy's eyes were calculating as she reread the inscription, translating several Latin words. 'These are the same markings that were on the eclipse gate! You can't break the Lacrima, but a celestial Mage can summon a body or a spirit from another plane!' Lucy swore in excitement. This is what Haku had been searching for, if she could summon Mavis, she could end Zerefs reign, they could finally be free.
'And you're this generations strongest celestial wizard, you posses most of the Zodiac keys. That's why Zeref brought Anna back' Levy summarised wearily. She had a bad feeling in her gut as she watched her best friend. Lucy's eyes were feverish, Levy couldn't shake the feeling that if they summoned her, they'd be playing right into Zeref's hands.
'Lucy don't-' Gray began reading his nakamas intentions correctly, but it was as these things often are, too late. Lucy placed her palms upon the Lacrima stone, repeating the words in Latin.
'Gate of the heavens, ruler of the the stars, I implore thee, open Mavis's gate!' A wind whipped around the room, Lucy's hair tore free of its bindings, her entire being suffused with celestial light. Gray had to grab on to a nearby armour rack. As the sudden wind nearly took him of his feet, metal swords and rusty axes rattled in their cases.
'Lucy, stop!' Levy cried, latching onto Lucy, she wrapped her arms around Lucy's midsection, burying her head into Lucy's shoulders. The Celestial Mage seemed unaffected, chanting the same verse. Her Celestial keys tore free of her belt, they hovered in the air spinning and dancing around the Lacrima coffin. Geminis key materialised to join the others. They spun faster and faster, golden strands of light connected them like the finest spiders silk, the threads glowing brighter until it formed a ball of light, that entered the coffin. Mavis's body flowed with power, even the ends of her hair shone like live sparks. Sparks of light danced across her whole body, restoring colour to her skin.
'My god it's working' Gray shouted over the howl of the wind, his knuckles white from holding onto cover.
Lucy threw her head back screaming the words now. Her body once more no longer her own, possessed by another beings memory's. Anna remembered whispering similar words at the eclipse gate hundreds of years previous. Their combined desire to help Haku, had revived some of Anna's spirit. The Latin words were as familiar to her as breathing. How long had she spent with Zeref studying the right spells to open the portal? As one voice they chorused 'Open Gate of the heavens, Ruler of the stars we ORDER thee, open Mavis's gate!' The wind died, and the keys dropped to the floor, they're golden light returning to Normal. The Lacrima glass splintered. Lucy swayed, and levy caught her.
'Lucy are you ok?!' Levy demanded holding Lucy in her arms as they sank to the floor, the Celestial Mage smirked, her eyes flashing with power.
'Haku called me Anna' the deep melodious voice belonged to an older woman not that of their comrade. 'We have saved him' Lucy closed her eyes and clutched her head groaning, she curled into Levys chest. Levy held her panicking.
'Lucy! Please stay with us' as the Celestial Mage cried fighting back the memories of Anna, she concentrated on the steady stream of her friends voice, calling her back to her own body. She opened her eyes, breathing deep lungfuls of air.
She caught Levys dark worried gaze and grasped her hand, her head lay in her lap. 'That wasn't me' she whispered horrified.
'Shh it's ok, we know' Levy brushed sweaty golden strands of hair away from Lucy's face. 'It'll be ok I promise!' Levy assured her, soothing her friend till her breathing returned to normal. Gray crouched beside them having collected Lucy's Celestial keys and reattaching them to her belt.
He pushed his black hair away from his face in confusion. 'What just happened...?' He asked completely bewildered. He stroked Lucy's hair in concern.
'I would like to know the same thing.' A small, high, reedy voice whispered. The Lacrima blew apart. Gray shielded the girls with his body, as chunks of it flew across the room, narrowly missing the group. From the debris Mavis emerged, her hair flowed down her back in long white gold tresses, her bare skin luminescent under the pale ghostly lights. She frowned, her delicate arched eyebrows drawing together, her face barely past its childhood youth. 'What have you done?' She asked again glaring at Lucy.
'For the last time, you don't destroy public property' Makarov lectured the dragon slayers as they neared the guild. Natsu's arms were folded behind his head, he yawned completely oblivious to Makarovs Lectures. Gajeel trailed silently behind them, his hands in his pockets casting his usual aura of indifference.
'I wonder if Mira's cooking pancakes today' Natsu wondered, perking both dragon Slayers up instantly, a cold night in a magic council cell, with no food and only each other for company had made the duo understandably bitter.
'We might as well enjoy a last meal, before Levy and bunny girl catch wind of this' Gajeel muttered darkly, Natsu chose wisely not to contemplate that last statement.
'Are you even listening?!' Makarov fumed, his size growing in irritation. 'Of all the selfish, careless brats I have housed in my time as guildmaster, you are the worst'. Makarov continued his tirade. Beside them Mavis laughed, hovering in the air invisible to all but Makarov, unless she chose. Mavis after spending decades of isolation in Tenrou decided to visit the guild once more.
'I can think of one bratt who was worse' Mavis chided Makarov affectionately, winking at him. Makarov just glared at her out of the corner of his eye, but chose not to comment. As they rounded the corner to the street where Fairytail stood, Mavis began to feel strange. Her body began to tingle, like pins and needles. She shivered once out of existence before returning, clutching her heart. 'Makarov!' She cried clutching her chest in pain, her heart hadn't beat in nearly a hundred years. The dragon slayers gasped, she was visible to them now. Her corporeal form vanished again, her fingers reaching out to a bewildered Makarov. 'It hurts' she whispered in astonishment, they're eyes connected once in shock before she disappeared.
'Did we just see the first master?' Gajeel asked in astonishment. Natsu gaped in confusion, his gut telling him something bad was about to happen. Makarov grew in size till he stood at Seven feet towering over the dragon slayers, they gulped in fear as he grabbed fistfuls of they're clothing, slamming them into stone wall of a building.
'What...did you bratts do?!' He seethed in fury, his eyes had turned to burning coals. Natsu struggled against Makarov's grasp in frustration.
'Nothing' the fire mage insisted, looking to Gajeel for confirmation, who nodded.
'Liars!' Makarov shouted shaking them, Natsu began to turn green, motion sickness setting in. 'You broke into the Guilds Vault didn't you?! You didn't think I knew I was being followed?'
'They didn't, but Lucy and I did' Happy whispered, landing on the cobbled street, his face solemn. Makarov turned to them, his face set in fresh lines of horror.
